Sheffield Utd willing to cover Lingard Man Utd wages

Sheffield United are ready to pay Jesse Lingard’s wages in full to take him on-loan from Manchester United.

The Manchester Evening News says the Blades might be restricted to loan deals in the window, after spending £53million on new signings in the summer transfer window. With Championship football a real possibility next season, they need to be wary of their spending.

Chris Wilder is understood to have had talks with counterpart Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the match, with Lingard clearly not in Solskjaer’s plans going forward.

Lingard has only made two appearances for the Red Devils all season, and they came in EFL Cup games. He hasn’t played in the Premier League all season, and the last time he started for the side in the top flight was on New Year’s Day.

The Blades are expected to cover the majority of his £100,000-per-week wages.

  • Chelsea move up to third after 4-1 win over Sheffield United

Chelsea move up to third after 4-1 win over Sheffield United

Chelsea hit back in impressive fashion after going behind to overwhelm bottom club Sheffield United 4-1 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

The win meant they move into third-place in the English Premier League (EPL).

David McGoldrick’s neat flick gave the visitors a surprise ninth minute lead but Chelsea responded with goals by Tammy Abraham and Ben Chilwell before half-time

Frank Lampard’s side bossed the second half and captain Thiago Silva scored his first goal for the London club with a 77th minute header.

This was before Timo Werner added a fourth.

Moroccan international Hakim Ziyech, another of Chelsea’s recent signings, claimed two assists in a masterful performance.

Chelsea have 15 points from eight games, one behind surprise leaders Southampton and title holders Liverpool, who visit Manchester City on Sunday.

Sheffield United are still looking for their first victory of the season and have picked up only one point so far.

It is the joint-lowest total after eight games in Premier League history.

“Once they scored the reaction was important and the reaction of the team for the rest of the game was spot on,” Lampard said.

“They are a hard team to play against. So, some great signs, but we have to keep going.”

Chris Wilder’s side began brightly and took the lead with a well-worked short corner kick routine.

The ball eventually played in by George Baldock to Sander Berge whose shot was cleverly re-directed by McGoldrick past goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

Chelsea did not take long to get into their stride though and were level after 23 minutes.

This was when Abraham was picked out by Mateo Kovacic and his bouncing shot beat goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Ziyech was a constant threat to the Manchester United defence and his superb delivery almost embarrassed Ramsdale who scooped the ball away to Werner whose shot then struck the crossbar.

Another Ziyech ball a minute later caused more havoc and, as Ramsdale hesitated, Chilwell crept in at the far post to score.

It was Ziyech’s left foot that gave Brazilian central defender Thiago the chance to glance in Chelsea’s third.

“Ziyech has been a huge plus for us and he will continue to be so,” Lampard said of the former Ajax Amsterdam player.

Germany striker Werner wrapped up a good night for the Blues with a clinical right-foot finish after a loose ball rebounded kindly into his path in the 80th minute.

  • Hawk-Eye apologises after Sheffield United denied win at Aston Villa

Hawk-Eye apologises after Sheffield United denied win at Aston Villa

The operators of the goalline technology system used in the English Premier League (EPL) apologised for an embarassing failure on Wednesday.

This was after Sheffield United were denied a clear goal in their match against Aston Villa in the restarted 2019/2020 season.

In the Premier League’s first match after a 100-day hiatus due to the COVID-19 crisis, Sheffield United were denied through a clumsy defensive mix-up just before half-time.

That was when Aston Villa goalkeeper Orjan Nyland carried the ball back over his own line.

“I don’t know whether to laugh or cry,” Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder said after the game, which was played behind closed doors at Villa Park.

“The feeling at the time by everybody, both sets of players and staff, was that of a goal.”

Off-balance Aston Villa goalkeeper Nyland caught a curling free-kick but was bundled back over the line by team mate Keinan Davis.

Referee Michael Oliver, pointing to his watch, looked to indicate that goalline technology had not verified the ball had crossed the line.

This is in spite of what appeared to be clear evidence on TV replays.

Hawk-Eye, who operate the goalline system, issued a statement after the game saying the seven cameras in the stands around the goal area were obstructed by the goalkeeper, defender and goalpost.

“This level of occlusion has never been seen before in over 9,000 matches that the Hawk-Eye Goal Line Technology system has been in operation,” the company said, while fans furiously vented on social media about the technological slip-up.

There was also no intervention from the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), in spite of the fact that TV viewers were able to see the ball had clearly crossed the line.

“Under the IFAB protocol, the VAR is able to check goal situations.

“However, due to the fact that the on-field match officials did not receive a signal, and the unique nature of that, the VAR did not intervene,” the PGMO, body responsible for match officials in English professional football, said in a separate explanation.

Wilder asked to speak to Oliver at halftime.

“The referee said it had the feel of a goal but he has to rely on Hawk-Eye. We believe it should have been referred and asked for it,” he said.

The draw moved Sheffield United up to sixth place, one point behind Manchester United in fifth.

  • John Fleck deny Arsenal win with late equaliser

John Fleck deny Arsenal win with late equaliser

Sheffield United’s outstanding first season back in the Premier League continued as John Fleck hit a late equaliser at Arsenal.

The Blades were typically organised and threatening throughout but looked set for defeat when 18-year-old Gabriel Martinelli steered in an opener for the hosts.

Arsenal dropped deeper as the game wore on and struggled to create too much, although Nicolas Pepe thought he should have been awarded a penalty after the break.

And Chris Wilder’s attacking substitutions were rewarded when Fleck hit a deflected shot into the far corner to keep the sixth-placed Blades four points clear of the Gunners.

  • EPL: Sheff Utd move fifth as VAR denies West Ham

EPL: Sheff Utd move fifth as VAR denies West Ham

Sheffield United climbed to fifth in the Premier League table on Friday with a win against West Ham, who had an injury-time equaliser ruled out by Video Assistant Referee.

John Fleck took advantage of a big mistake by substitute goalkeeper David Martin, latching on to his wayward pass to tee up Oli McBurnie to finish from close range after 53 minutes.

Substitute Robert Snodgrass thought he had levelled for the visitors, but the goal was disallowed after the ball was judged to have hit Declan Rice’s arm in the build-up.

“VAR, VAR”, the home fans chanted as the final whistle sounded, with West Ham condemned to their eighth defeat in 11 Premier League games and their first under new manager David Moyes.

The result means the Hammers remain two points above the relegation zone and could drop into the bottom three if results go against them this weekend.

  • Liverpool maintain perfect start with narrow victory over Sheff Utd

Liverpool maintain perfect start with narrow victory over Sheff Utd

Georginio Wijnaldum scored the only goal as Liverpool continued their perfect start to the Premier League season with victory at a raucous Bramall Lane.

But the winner was a moment to forget for otherwise faultless Blades goalkeeper Dean Henderson, who spilled the Dutchman’s tame effort before it squirmed agonisingly over the line.

It meant relief for Jurgen Klopp’s side, who were far from their best in South Yorkshire – and left thankful that the hosts could not find a way through in a game where they matched the European champions in many respects.

Substitute Leon Clarke, making his Premier League debut at the age of 34, should have levelled it late on, but blazed over.

Liverpool have won their first seven league games of the season, and before Saturday’s 15:00 BST matches, they have an eight-point lead at the top of the early season table.

Klopp’s Reds were rightly expected to win this game – and ultimately did. But when the story of the 2019-20 season is told, this may be looked back on as one of Liverpool’s most crucial but most fortunate victories.

The first half, though goalless, was thrilling. For all of the visitors’ early pressure, it was Chris Wilder’s side who had the first sight of goal when Ollie McBurnie stung the palms of Adrian.

Liverpool’s first clear chance came as a result of a long ball over the top from Virgil van Dijk, but Sadio Mane’s finish when through on goal was wild and wayward, while the Senegal forward later struck the post.

After the break, United may have hit the front, but for alert defending from Joel Matip and Andrew Robertson to frustrate the enthusiastic John Lundstram.

At the other end, when a penalty appeal for Lundstram’s challenge on Mane was denied, it seemed that Liverpool may have to settle for a point.

With time running out, the Merseysiders withdrew Jordan Henderson for Divock Origi, and the move to a 4-2-3-1 formation ultimately paid off with Wijnaldum’s fortunate finish.

EPL: Sheffield United secure surprise win at Everton

Yerry Mina’s first half own goal and a late Lys Mousset effort gave Sheffield United a smash-and-grab 2-0 win at Everton in an entertaining English Premier League match on Saturday.

The result lifted the Blades to eighth place on eight points from six games while Everton slipped to 14th on seven points after they failed to convert several chances at Goodison Park.

Colombia defender Mina put the ball past his own goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the 40th minute after the first purposeful move by the visitors resulted in a corner kick.

Everton dominated the opening half and their Brazilian forward Richarlison curled a fine shot inches wide before visiting goalkeeper Dean Henderson kept out a stinging low drive by Lucas Digne.

Everton pressed after the break in search of an equaliser but were caught cold again in the 79th minute.

This was after Mousset latched on to a defence-splitting pass and beat Pickford with a clinical finish to delight the away fans.

Sheffield United held out comfortably in the last 10 minutes as Everton manager deployed Theo Walcott in a desperate attempt to salvage something from a disappointing performance.
