  • Forces behind Sanusi’s removal intoxicated by power – Shehu Sani

A former lawmaker representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Shehu Sani, on Monday, said those behind the dethronement of the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, displayed “the intolerance and toxicity of the liquor of power”.

Sani said the Northern Elders Forum had waded into the misunderstanding between the deposed Emir and the Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, but failed to make the two parties reach a truce.

He tweeted, “The removal of Emir Sanusi represents the incompatibility of the crown and conscience, the consequences of dissent against established norms and the heavy price of holding principles in our north. It also revealed the intolerance and toxicity of the liquor of power.”

  • Insecurity: Stop giving excuses, perform ‘miracles’ you promised Nigerians– Shehu Sani to Buhari

Shehu Sani, former Kaduna Central Senator, has charged the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to stop giving excuses over the spate of insecurity in Nigeria.

Sani gave the charge while recounting one of Buhari-led All Progressives Congress, APC, campaign manifesto in 2015 which was to proffer solution to the country’s security challenges.

The former lawmaker stated that Nigerians voted the Buhari government on the promises that they would perform “miracles” in the area of insecurity, hence they should stop giving excuses.

In a tweet, Sani wrote: “Insecurity was the major factor used for the ejection of the past administration and the most attractive reasons for the installation of the present one; Those who promised to perform instant miracles should not deny or give excuses of not having the magic wand.”

The lawmaker’s call is coming at a time Boko Haram terrorists are on rampage in the Northeast while kidnappers are gradually taking over the country.

A few weeks ago, Boko Haram had attacked a settlement, Auno near Maiduguri in Borno State, and left about 30 people dead.

Following the attack, Buhari paid a sympathy visit to Maiduguri, shortly after which the insurgents attacked again.

The President during the visit had wondered how Boko Haram members survive.

On Friday, the leader of the sect, Abubakar Shekau had threatened Buhari not to return to Borno State again because his members are fully on ground.

  • EFCC clears air on Shehu Sani’s alleged detention at ‘underground cell’

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has debunked media reports that suspects were being detained in an underground cell in the commission office.

The clarification came on the heels of a statement credited to a former Senator representing Kaduna Central senatorial district, Shehu Sani, who accused the anti-graft agency of detaining him in an underground cell for 30 days.

Head of the zonal office, Mr Aminu Aliyu, while leading journalists round the facilities said that such cell does not exist in the commission.

Aliyu added that the tour was an avenue for journalists to have an insight into the commission’s operations as against some negative insinuation in certain quarters.

He said that some of the suspects preferred coming back to the cells after arraignment in court than being taken to prison.

“As you can see for yourself, we do not have underground cells here. Most of the suspects begged the judges to be taken back here because of the facility on ground.

“They eat normal food and three times a day, we have a clinic here where detainees are first treated in case of an emergency.

“If anyone of you thinks all these have been arranged, you are welcome to come at any time you chose, to spend time with us and see for yourself.

“If you want to visit any of our facilities across the country, you don’t need to give us prior notice of your coming. You can even arrange it as a group of reporters if you don’t want to come alone,” he said.

Journalists were taken round the detention facilities located at the basement of the Idiagbon House, a four-storey building at the Wuse II, Abuja headquarters of the commission

Journalists were also shown the female and Male cells, in house clinic for emergency cases but were not allowed to interact with the detainees.

Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, back home from a month long detention in the cell of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Saturday recounted his ordeal in custody.

Sani claimed he was thrown into an underground cell and forced to declare his assets by operatives of the EFCC.

He described his detention as unfair, unjust and “a clear breach of my fundamental rights and hence stands condemned.”

He said: “During my unjust stay in the EFCC cell, I was subjected to traumatizing interrogations; my houses and offices were searched.

“They compelled me to declare my assets, they tried to subject me to polygraph lie detector tests, my accounts were blocked, and my phone was seized, all in the name of fictional $24,000 or $25, 000 extortion.

“Any Information planted in the media by the EFCC spokesperson while I was in their custody about me is false and nothing but bacterial and fungal infested concoctions, typical of their style.

“Our country will continue to be at the bottom strata of the transparency International index as long as our anti-graft agencies only use their might and arsenal to crush ants while lacking the courage, the heart, and the liver to confront the snakes, the vultures and the hyenas of the ruling establishment.

“They can frame me, detain me but can’t silence me. I shall abide by all the conditions of my bail and appreciate the courage, compassion, and wisdom of the court in granting me bail.”

  • Alleged extortion: EFCC freezes Shehu Sani’s bank accounts

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has frozen the bank accounts of a former senator from Kaduna state, Shehu Sani.

In a statement, his senior special adviser also said the former lawmaker was “forced to declare his assets.

The EFCC had arrested Mr Sani for allegedly demanding money from Sani Dauda, who is owner of ASD Motors, to bribe acting chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, so as to influence an investigation.

Although the former lawmaker denied the allegation, the anti-graft agency insisted he had questions to answer on the matter.

Mr Sani’s aide, Suleiman Ahmed, accused the EFCC of bias in his principal’s case. He wondered why the anti-graft agency has not detained Sani’s accuser “who admitted to giving bribe” .

He also wondered about the connection between allegations of extortion of $25,000 and the searching of his residence, blocking his accounts and forcing him to declare his assets?

  • Alleged Extortion: EFCC speaks on Buhari’s ‘involvement’ in Shehu Sani’s arrest

Alleged Extortion: EFCC speaks on Buhari’s ‘involvement’ in Shehu Sani’s arrest

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, says insinuations and phantom claims that the Commission is “prosecuting” Senator Shehu Sani, because he is a known critic of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration, are fallacies.

The commission, in a statement, said Sani is currently facing criminal investigation, and that he was being detained by the EFCC in very conducive environment, based on a valid court order.

“”Invariably, claims in some quarters of the breach of his fundamental human rights, is merely in the imagination of the purveyors of such claims.

“Let it be stated clearly, that Senator Shehu Sani has questions to answer as regards the alleged involvement in name-dropping, and particularly that he obtained $25,000 from Alhaji Sani Dauda, the ASD Motors boss, in order to help shield him from investigations being carried out by the EFCC.

“For certain people to brazenly come out to defend a suspect, who is being probed for a serious offence as the one committed by Sani shows that they are not really conversant with his offence.

“It is unfortunate that certain people are ready to do anything to support evil for pecuniary gains. This is quite unfortunate,” the commission said.
