  • ‘Criminal frame-up can’t silence me’ Shehu Sani speaks on bribery allegation

Shehu Sani, former senator representing Kaduna central, says the bribery allegation against him is an imaginative work of fiction crafted to silence him.

The senator was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged extortion. And he has been in the custody of the agency.

The EFCC accused Sani of collecting money from Sani Dauda, owner of ASD Motors, promising to pass it on to Ibrahim Magu, acting chairman of the anti-graft agency, to influence an investigation.

He was also alleged to have said he could assist Dauda in influencing a case at the supreme court by bribing Muhammad Tanko, chief justice of Nigeria (CJN), and some other judges.

The CJN denied having anything to do with the former senator.

On Wednesday, officials of the EFCC searched two houses belonging to the senator in Abuja.

In a statement on Friday, Sani said he has never offered bribe to the CJN, and that his arrest is politically motivated.

“The allegations of ‘extortion’ against me is baseless, fact-less, unfounded, hollow and unsubstantial,” he said.

“It is a scripted stream of mischievous concoctions and utter fabrications using a puppet state agent; all aimed at splashing faeces and mud on me.

“The extortion allegation is nothing but a wholesale falsehood, packaged in a phantom anti-graft facade to taint, stain and mute me. That shall never happen if I am alive.

“I have made my statement and provided all my facts against their package of lies and I demand the EFCC to make public all the sheets of our statements and supporting documents for the world to see.

“My detention is unfair, unjust, prearranged and politically motivated.”

The former senator, who is a critic of the Buhari administration, also said the federal government cannot use a false bribery story to shut him up.

“Fascism thrives in frame up of its critics. They claim extortion and here they are closing my bank accounts, searching my houses and offices and demanding I declare my assets, of which I have already done that at the CCB (Code of Conduct Bureau) last year when I left the Senate,” he said.

“Frame-up cannot silence me! I have never ever met with the CJN or any judge or judges or ever called directly or indirectly to offer to give or to give directly or indirectly any form of gratification from Alhaji Sani Dauda.

“I have never ever discussed with ASD on any form of bribe or gratification to be given to any judge or any EFCC official.

“The bribe story is phantom, the bribe story is a fake, imaginative work of fiction, cruelly crafted to smear me, to frame me and to justify my persecution.

“The bribe story is a heap of blatant lies and outright falsehood concocted and fabricated, using a front and the EFCC to premiere a state drama.

“Criminalising me or ‘framing me’ will not silence me, bend me or compromise me.”

  • BREAKING: EFCC invades Shehu Sani’s house

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have reportedly invaded the Abuja residence of Senator Shehu Sani over alleged extortion.

It was gathered that the EFCC stormed the apartment in Wuse, Abuja at about 3:30pm on Wednesday to look for incriminating evidence against the former Kaduna senator.

The EFCC had last week arrested Sani for alleged extortion of $20,000 from the owner of ASD Motors.

Sani was elected senator in 2015, under the All Progressives Congress platform. When he could not get the party’s ticket in 2019, he ran on the ticket of the Peoples Redemption Party but lost to Uba Sani of the APC.

He has been a trenchant critic of the APC government, both in Kaduna and Abuja, since then.

Some of the offences the EFCC may slam the senator with are extortion, name dropping, and financial crimes.

Sani, who represented Kaduna central senatorial district between 2015 and 2019, allegedly collected money from Sani Dauda, owner of ASD Motors, promising to pass it on to Ibrahim Magu, acting chairman of the anti-graft agency.

  • Alleged Extortion: Shehu Sani rejects lie detector test, wants to swear with Quran

Former Kaduna central Senator, Shehu Sani has turned down a lie detector test suggested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and instead opted to swear by the Quran.

It was the latest development in the alleged extortion case involving him and ASD Motors Chairman, Sani Dauda, who claimed to have given him $24,000 as demanded to offer as bribes to judges and the EFCC boss, Ibrahim Magu.

According to The Nation, Shehu Sani refused to take a lie detector test when taken to a polygraph clinic at the EFCC Wuse office, in Abuja.

“I won’t take the test; I do not trust the machine. I am not sure whether or not the machine is working well.Instead of polygraph, give me the Holy Qur’an to swear with, ” Sani was quoted as saying.

It was learnt that EFCC detectives later asked Senator Sani to “put his resistance in a statement on oath for record purposes”.

A highly-placed source said: “Following his refusal, our detectives did not force him to go through the test.

“But they asked him to write a statement on his refusal to undergo polygraph because he had earlier sworn by his grave but he has not been straightforward.”

As there are several ways to catch a monkey, the EFCC will be administering the Polygraph test on Sani’s accuser and his wife on Tuesday.

According to Dauda’s petition, Shehu Sani collected a total of $24,000 (N8.6 million), by pestering him for the money.

The development followed fresh allegations levelled against the ex-lawmaker by the complainant, Alhaji Sani Dauda.

Shehu Sani was arrested on New Year ‘s Eve by the EFCC operatives in Abuja for allegedly extorting $10,000 from Dauda, the Chairman of ASD Motors.

  • Shehu Sani to remain in detention for 14 days

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has reportedly obtained a court order to detain ex-lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, for 14 days to ensure a thorough investigation into his alleged involvement in name-dropping and extortion.

The development followed new allegations levelled against the ex-lawmaker by the complainant, Alhaji Sani Dauda.

The former lawmaker was arrested on New Year ‘s Eve by the EFCC operatives in Abuja for allegedly extorting $10,000 from Dauda, the Chairman of ASD Motors.

  • Extortion: Shehu Sani denies accusation, ready to face accuser at EFCC office

Senator Shehu Sani has told his interrogators at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that he did not demand $20,000 (about N7.2million) from businessman Sani Dauda.

He expressed readiness for a face-to-face interaction with Dauda, who is the Chairman/ CEO of ASD Motors at the trial to prove his innocence.

Recall that the outspoken lawmaker was arrested by the anti-graft agency on Tuesday saying it acted on a petition from Daura.

Dauda is expected to appear before EFCC investigator today (Thursday) for interrogation and an encounter with the former senator.

According to a report by The Nation, the embattled ex-senator maintained his innocence in a written statement he made at the EFCC headquarters.

A top source, who spoke in confidence said: “During interrogation by our detectives and in his written statement, Sani said he did not collect $20,000 from the Chairman/ CEO of ASD Motors, Alhaji Sani Dauda.

“He also said since he does not work with EFCC, he could not have asked for cash to intercede on a case on Dauda’s behalf with the Acting EFCC chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Magu.

“Although he admitted knowing the car dealer and commiserating with him over an incident in November 2019, he said he was prepared to protect his integrity before detectives and in court.”

Asked of the next step, the source said: “The EFCC acted on a petition from the car dealer. We did not create the document.

“Detectives will engage Dauda on Thursday (today) and the Senator. We have asked him to bring all relevant documents on the transactions between the two parties.

“We are also screening the contents of telephone messages between the senator and Dauda. We have two parallel claims. It is our job as investigators to sieve the information at our disposal.

It was also learnt that the EFCC may invite Bureau De Change operators who allegedly served as intermediaries.

A top source said: “He was said to have collected the $20,000 from the Chairman/ CEO of ASD Motors on the grounds that he is very close to the EFCC boss.

He added: “There is no doubt that bribe cash exchanged hands between Sen. Sani and the owner of ASD Motors because a refund has been made.

“The matter started on November 14 when the former senator went to sympathise with the ASD Motors chairman on November 14th over an incident. It was in the process that a discussion ensued on some challenges being faced by the car dealer.

“They met on November 19th on the cases involving the businessman and the EFCC. About N5million allegedly was given to the Senator, through a bureau De Change operator, to address the case in court.

“On November 20th, the Senator had audience with the businessnan where he allegedly promised to get in touch with EFCC investigators and prosecutors.

“He was also alleged to have claimed that the investigators were demanding cash to give to the Acting EFCC chairman, Ibrahim Magu. It was at this point he the $20,000, was supported.

“At this stage, the car dealer became suspicious and claimed that he did not have $20,000 but he could afford $10,000 with the balance for payment after the intercession.

“Despite the offer of $10,000, there was no result as the EFCC was still adamant on the case of the owner of ASD Motors.”

  • El-Rufai gearing up for 2023 elections with son’s enrollment in public school – Shehu Sani

El-Rufai gearing up for 2023 elections with son’s enrollment in public school – Shehu Sani

Senator who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the eight National Assembly, Shehu Sani has reacted to the action of the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who recently took his six-year-old son Abubakar to a public school for his primary education.

Sani said the governor’s intention was to deceive people outside the locality who may not know the level of decay in public schools in the State saying, it was designed to score political goals ahead of 2023 political dispensation.

He, however, described the move as a badly written Kennywood or Nollywood script, designed for the media preparatory for 2023.

Addressing newsmen in Kaduna, he said, the governor’s action, “was simply a 2023 political stunt set up for the media and people who reside outside Kaduna because those who reside here know what public primary school look like in the state.

According to him, “It is not because I have a political difference with him, no, but whoever lives in Kaduna State knew that what the governor did with his son been enrolled into public school was just a comedy.

“Though, it was a badly written Kennywood or Nollywood script, but as far as am concerned that was a bad and poorly written script for the media preparatory for 2023 and nothing else.

“He would have done better by upgrading schools in Kaduna. You cannot spend N195M in a particular school and then take your son and the media to that school and think you have done anything different.

“Let me tell you, we had a governor in this state, Balarabe Musa who has never lived in the government house during his reign and all the while he was a governor he lived in his private house and I also know that the children of former governor Ahmed Makarfi attended this same Capital School.

“I also know that other public officials’ children go to that school too. So if you are not been cony, deceptive and comical, you would have allowed all your children to enrol into public schools. Public school doesn’t mean primary schools alone, there are public secondary schools and public universities.

“He is not new in this kind of drama. It was the same person who was moving around Kaduna-Abuja road with cameras that he was chasing kidnappers. So, this is a new script but as far as am concerned, that is comedy sinnce we are in an era in this state of using public utilities, public hospitals and now public schools.

“So it is also in order that public officials, both elected and appointed should also patronise public toilets in Kaduna. That is the highest form of patriotism and selfless service. You should use what the masses are using which is public toilets.” He said.

  • Senator Shehu Sani and the Kajuru crisis, By Danjuma Musa

Opposition can be your friend. Opposition can be the fire that tempers the better sword, as well as the ice that cools a fiery temper. Don’t ever run from it; learn from it!” – Jack R. Rose

An opposition that has convictions, that has a workable alternative policies to that of the government in power is an asset to democracy, because like the popular maxim goes, absolute power corrupts absolutely, so leaders especially those who have passionate supporters who are considered infallible, some sort of a messiah who can do no wrong need “opponents” to save them from themselves. So a Senator Shehu Sani for instance who would have kept Nasir El – Rufai the governor of Kaduna State on his toes hasn’t been able to , because in the strict sense of the word he isn’t one and can never be because his criticisms are for the fun of it, opportunistic and hardly ever point to credible alternatives.

Friday 19th April 2019 before the Easter Sunday bombing of some Catholic Churches and luxury hotels in Sri Lanka by some forces of darkness, some bandits had invaded the famous Kajuru Castle, a holiday resort located in kaduna State and in the process killed Faye Mooney a British aid worker and a Nigerian and took some guests hostage apparently for ransom. It must be stated from the outset that every life is important, but in terms of scale and number the two incidents are not by any standard comparable. But while the people of Sri Lanka have united in grief, even when there are concrete evidence that the government was sloppy with the credible intelligence. The opposition would at the appropriate time definitely demand for answers, but for now the urgent task is to mourn the dead and to get on top of the situation, especially as there are strong indications that some of the terrorists might still be at large.

In Nigeria everything and every issue is politicized and eventually muddled up. This is the light in which the reaction of Shehu Sani which is typical and not unexpected should be viewed. For the benefit of those who haven’t read or heard about his reaction it is hereby reproduced verbatim for their benefit:”All those una wey wan come up here do tourism, escortion or sight seeing, make una chil ,this Gunmen no dey joke, life no get double.” Shehu Sani showed no empathy expected of a leader, rather displayed an alarming irresponsibility expected from a senator who has been elected to make laws for good governance, for the security of life and property, he was rather celebratory. The main purpose of his twisted twit which has rightly drawn condemnation is obviously to de market Kaduna State as an unsafe place for business , all in a bid to get at Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who has dealt him serious political blows from which he is yet to recover.

Unfortunately for mankind the world today has become unsafe due to the activities of several militant groups and deranged individuals who want to force their narrow and misguided agenda on the world by intimidation. No country including the super powers – the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia and France has escaped the war being waged by these terrorists on all fronts. The unfortunate thing about the new war is that it has no boundary and exceedingly very difficult to foresee and stop, because the terrorists hold all the aces – the targets – which are usually human beings and the mode of attack. For instance how can anyone stop a terrorist from driving a car into a crowd , like it has happened in France and Germany? So the only reasonable option is the “minimization” of their actions.

The terrorists of Sri Lanka and the kidnappers of Kajuru Castle are two sides of same coin- the only difference being that the kidnappers are common criminals who engage in their enterprise for money, while those of Sri Lanka want to “correct” a fundamental mistake the Almighty God made by creating some people white and some black, some Christians, some Muslims, some atheists and some Buddhists. This explains their strident efforts to right the “mistake” by embarking on “religious cleansing” The question is how can anyone dialogue with such characters with their warped ideology? Sadly this is the reality of our world today.

The problem with the likes of Shehu Sani who masquerade as leaders, is the painful fact that they are nothing but charlatans. A leader like Jack Welch the former Chief Executive of General Electric argued “have the courage to make unpopular decisions and gut calls”. A point Rosalyn Carter further buttressed when she differentiated between being just a leader and a greater leader. The summary of her position being that “a great leader takes people where they don’t necessarily want to go,but ought to.” Were Shehu Sani a leader he would have first shown empathy to the victims and condemn the bandits, rather than use the ugly incident to run down Kaduna State as unsafe. Shehu Sani is clearly dishonest, because while he has continued to lunch a stay away campaign against the people and the state, the question is if there an invitation to visit the United States which holds a record in the number of people killed in a year , would he reject it?

But it is in the nature of Shehu Sani to play dirty politics with every issue solely for his own advantage and in furtherance of his politics that benefits him and only him. It is obvious he hasn’t learnt from his short lived political career that one can’t eat his cake and have it – you can’t want to be seen as the only good guy by those opposed to your party and expect your party to reward you with a return ticket. Elected on the platform the All Progressives Congress(APC) he engaged the Ward,Local,State and National chapters of his party in a war of words. He didn’t spare Muhammadu Buhari nor Nasir El Rufai his state governor. Every policy of both the state and federal government was subjected to ridicule in the name of being the defender of the poor. Tired of his antics he was severally suspended and eventually expelled. But the so called man of “principles” was to eat his vomit when he realized that he needed the APC,more than the party needed him.

If Shehu Sani admits that the entire north is under siege and that the security agencies are in reality under the control and direction of the federal Government why single out Kaduna State Government for demonization? Is his judgement on all the issues he has opposed influenced by his disagreement with Nasir El Rufai? In the typical Shehu Sani fashion of never taking responsibility he blames northern politicians as being responsible for the problem of the North, like he blames Nasir El-Rufai for issues that he knows are clearly within the competency of the federal government? If Shehu Sani excludes himself as a northern politician, then he must be a twitter or Facebook politician!

Unknown to Shehu Sani’s is that his twits and reactions to the Kajuru crisis questions the legitimacy of Government of which he is part and parcel of as a senator. Can Shehu Sani claim not to know that the security forces as a result of the various challenges are stretched and that preparedness against attacks is not the sole responsibility of government? It’s convenient for Senator Shehu Sani to seek to hide the truth because that would deny him the oxygen that he needs to harass his opponents. To those being misled by Shehu Sani please be informed that the government would always find it difficult in the light of the nature of the new security challenges to anticipate every conceivable attack even if the security agencies are well funded and equipped.

  • El-Rufai unpopular in Kaduna, can’t win second term bid – Shehu Sani

El-Rufai unpopular in Kaduna, can’t win second term bid – Shehu Sani

The Senator representing Kaduna Central at the National Assembly, Shehu Sani, has described the state Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, as “unpopular.”

Sani, who is contesting for the Senate on the People’s Redemption Party platform, also said the governor had not achieved anything since 2015.

The senator had dumped the All Progressives Congress for the PRP three days after he was denied the ticket to contest for the Senate on the APC platform.

His rift with the state governor was believed to have cost him the ticket.

Speaking on Nigeria 2019, an Arise TV programme on Thursday, Sani said the PRP was a major threat to the APC in Kaduna State, saying, “This is why every morning and evening, they destroy our billboards and tear our posters. They are persecuting our members. If we were inconsequential, they would have ignored us.”

Sani alleged that, the fact that “el-Rufai had a hand” in denying him the APC ticket didn’t mean anything.

He said, “The question is, can he win? The fact is that he is one of the most unpopular governors in the history of Kaduna State.

The President (Muhammadu Buhari) has been to the state for many times, but how many times have you seen him inaugurating a project in the state?

The first time the President went there, he was given a honorary degree from a university that had not started a PhD programme; the second time he was in the state was to inaugurate Olam, a company from Singapore.

The third time was to inaugurate a project by the Ministry of Transport. So, he (el-Rufai) has not done anything and we are going to remove him out of power. That is a fact.”

The lawmaker explained that he and el-Rufai had always been at daggers drawn because of their differences both politically and ideologically.

He said, “Politically, he is a product of the establishment. Out of what they say is the 16-year tragedy of the Peoples Democratic Party, he spent 14 or 15 years there as a member, from the regime of (former President Olusegun) Obasanjo, where he held different positions. So, he was part of the system before he joined the APC.

All my life, I have been a freedom fighter, that is, a human rights activist. Most of the years under military rule, I spent my time in prison. From this angle, you can see where we differ.”

Sani said the adoption of the Muslim-Muslim ticket by el-Rufai for the forthcoming governorship election in the state also showed that the governor “is arrogant and haughty.”

For a governor of a state who came into office with a Muslim-Christian ticket now going for a second term and saying some people don’t matter, I don’t want to be associated with that kind of person, because all I know is that, with all his arrogance, haughtiness and egoism as a governor, power is ephemeral.

There is a time he will be out of office and he will account for whatever he has done,” Sani stated.
