Panic as fire guts Shekarau’s residence, Fire Service in a dilemma due to water shortage

There was confusion today at the Mundubawa country home of former Governor of Kano State, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau after it was gutted by fire, destroying the sitting rooms of his second wife, Halima.

Although the cause of the fire could not be immediately ascertained, officials of the State Fire Service are said to be grappling with water shortage.

It was gathered that the outbreak has remained uncontrollable as men of the Fire Service battle an acute shortage of water.

Eyewitnesses say the Fire Service had to seek support from private companies with their firfighting vehicles and equipment but could only do little or nothing as there was no water to subdue the inferno.

Sources said that the Fire Service like every other agency in Kano State have suffered massive neglect from the state government.

Operatives of the Fire service came to the scene but struggled to put it off.

A source close to the family told newsmen that the fire started from the inner kitchen before spreading to other parts of the building.

He said, “we thank God the fire only affected one of Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau’s sitting roomm and already the Fire Service officials are working to quench it.”

The spokesperson of the State Fire Service confirmed the Incident.

“We are still at the house and you know I cannot comment on anything now because we are still trying to make sure that the fire didn’t spread to other places”, he added.

Nigerians don’t need Atiku who spends all his time in Dubai – Fani-Kayode

A spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential campaign council, Femi Fani-Kayode has criticised the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar who resides in Dubai, UAE.

Reacting to a claim by a former Governor of Kano State, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau that APC flagbearer, Bola Ahmed Tinubu is seriously sick and incapable to be the next President of Nigeria.

Shekarau said, “When we said @officialABAT is seriously sick or is unstable in his activities are we wrong? How can you vote for him as your number one citizen”?

Fani-Kayode in a series of tweets on Monday described Shekarau as an irresponsible and deceitful person.

He wrote, “Irresponsible & deceitful words from an irresponsible & deceitful man in an irresponsible & deceitful party.

“Thunder fire you Ibrahim. It is @atiku that is seriously sick & unstable & not Asiwaju. He is sick in body, spirit & soul.

“We don’t want a sick & conflicted half man/half woman “non-binary” President who spends all his time in Dubai. We want a real man like @officialABAT”.

  • Atiku, other PDP bigwigs to welcome Shekarau today in Kano

Atiku, other PDP bigwigs to welcome Shekarau today in Kano

The leadership of the  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, will today receive the Senator representing Kano Central, Ibrahim Shekarau, and his political associates back to the party in Kano today.

Recall that the Kano born politician dumped the PDP for All Progressive Congress prior to 2019 general elections in the country.

Shekarau got elected into the red chamber on the platform of the APC.

However, the senator fell out with Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and defected to the New Nigeria People’s Party where he only spent a few months in the new party before his relationship with Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso went sour after some staunch loyalists of the senator did not get NNPP tickets to contest elective positions in the forthcoming general elections.

The former governor is now set to return to the former party the  PDP.

The state chairman of the PDP, Shehu Sagagi, said Shekarau had agreed to return to the party where he started from.

Sagagi said, “I am delighted to tell you that Shekarau, being the highest political office holder as provided by the constitution, has accepted and we have welcomed him back to our dear party, the PDP.

“All arrangements are in top gear in preparation to receive Atiku Abubakar who will be in Kano today (Sunday), hopefully to receive Ibrahim Shekarau. We have accepted to follow him and we shall succeed, God willing.”

  • How Ganduje sidelined me after begging me to join APC, contest for Kano Central senatorial election – Ex-Gov Shekarau

How Ganduje sidelined me after begging me to join APC, contest for Kano Central senatorial election – Ex-Gov Shekarau

Kano Central Senator, Ibrahim Shekarau has accused the state Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje of sidelining him.

Shekarau said Ganduje who begged him to join the All Progressives Congress, APC, has sidelined him in the running of the party’s affairs in the state.

He accused the governor of failing to listen to advice when he makes mistakes.

Speaking during a meeting with his followers at his residence in Kano yesterday, the Senator said Ganduje’s action was responsible for the creation of APC faction in the state.

Shekarau lamented that Ganduje has violated the principles of internal democracy in APC.

According to Shekarau: “We feel that the party had crossed our line that is why we reacted this way. We have been too patient, so that’s why we have taken this decision to show that being patient is not cowardice.

“We try to follow Ganduje as the leader because we believe in leadership but there are conditions. The conditions are that if the leader makes mistakes he should be corrected. We need internal democracy. He should listen to our advices and suggestions.

“The governor invited all party leaders of the country, including Adams Oshiomole, the national leader of the party then, to beg me to join APC. I told them to allow me to make consultations.

“Not long after I joined the party, the governor bought a nomination form for me and begged me to contest for Senatorial seat, I refused. In 2015, Senator Lado begged me to contest that he would step down for me, and I declined. Oshiomole and Ganduje begged me profusely to accept the offer to contest for senator, which I eventually obliged.

“The governor said he would follow me to submit the form to ensure that I submitted it at the national party secretariat. I presented my campaign schedule to Ganduje to 15 LGAs, but the governor said he will follow me for the campaign. He even invited the local government party chairmen to come to my residence to pay allegiance to me.

“But I also participated in his campaign. I followed him everywhere he went. After all these, from that time, I have never been involved in the party activities. Even some are suspecting me of sidelining them. I have totally been sidelined.

“In terms of appointment, Ganduje has never asked me to bring a candidate. The governor picked some members of my camp to give them appointments and I’m not jealous about that. I even advised them to be honest and obey their leader. I always ask my camp members to be good ambassadors.”

  • 2023: No zoning in APC’s constitution – Shekarau

2023: No zoning in APC’s constitution – Shekarau

Senator representing Kano central, Ibrahim Shekarau, on Sunday said there is no zoning in the constitution of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This is coming at a time some chieftains of the ruling party posited that there there is an arrangement for power shift from the north to south.

However, during an interactive session with journalists in Kano on Sunday, Shekarau said zoning of the presidential slot is that of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), not APC.

“I want to tell you that there is no place in the APC constitution that the issue of zoning is mentioned. I think it is only considered by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),” he said.

He said despite the absence of a written agreement on zoning, some persons are still calmouring for it.

Shekarau said while retaining power in a particular region does not necessarily make it superior or better off, common sense ought to prevail while determining the party’s presidential candidate for 2023.

Although Shekarau was not particular on the region which should be allowed to field a presidential candidate, he said the position should be appropriated based on justice and fairness.

“For me, I believe in the principle of balance equation and common sense. Although there is no place in our party where zoning is allowed unlike in the PDP where the zoning system is constitutional, ideally common sense should have guided APC in it’s selection,” he said.

“And those who want to kill themselves that one particular region should continue to maintain power should know that that will not make them better than other regions. For instance, in the last eight years the north has been in power, are we better than other parts of the country? The answer is no.”

Shekarau also spoke about his relationship with Abdullahi Ganduje, governor of Kano, and Rabiu Kwakwanso, his predecessor.

“We have been together with Ganduje for so many years when I was a permanent secretary, cabinet office, then he was a commissioner. So, we interacted a lot,” he said.

“I want to assure you that our relationship has been cordial up to now. There is no problem between us.

“So also with Kwankwaso, we have a good relationship. Our political differences will not affect our relationship. I never decamped from one party to another because of him.

“When I was in APC, Kwankwaso joined the party, and I left. Not because of him, but the leadership of the party. The same thing when I was in PDP, and left not because he joined the party.”

  • Alleged N950m fraud: You have case to answer, Court tells Shekarau, two others

Alleged N950m fraud: You have case to answer, Court tells Shekarau, two others

The Federal High Court sitting in Kano on Monday, struck out the no-case submission filed by the former governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau, challenging his alleged N950 million money laundering trial.

The EFCC, arraigned Shekarau on May 24, 2018, alongside former Foreign Affairs Minister, , Aminu Wali and one Mansur Ahmad on six counts bordering on conspiracy and money laundering to the tune of N950 million.

Delivering his ruling, Justice Lewis Allagoa, held that the EFCC has made out a prima facie case against the defendants, warranting that they must defend themselves.

“I have considered evidence by the prosecution against the defendants, it is sufficient that they have case to answer and defend themselves,” he said.

Allagoa adjourned the case until Nov.18 and Nov. 19, for defence to open its case.

Earlier, Counsel to Shekarau and two others, Mr Dauda Abdulrahman, and Mr Abdul Adamu, on July 9 filed a no case submission.

Adamu said EFCC failed to present a prima facie case to warrant the defendants entering defense and urged the court to discharge his clients.

Counsel to the EFCC, Mr Johnson Ojogbane, had earlier told the court that the defendants, between March 26 and March 27, 2015, conspired among themselves and received the said amount without going through financial institutions.

He said that the money was issued to the defendants by the Peoples Democratic Party and former petroleum minister, Diezani Allison-Madueke.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 18 (a) of the Money Laundering (prohibition) Act, 2011 as amended and punishable under Section 16 (2)(b) of the same Act and Section 15(1) of money laundering Act.

The defendants had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

NAN reports that the defendants were earlier granted bail in the sum of N100 million each with two reliable sureties in like sum and during the course of trial, the prosecution called four witnesses and closed its case on May 8.

  • 2019: Ex-Governors Kwankwaso, Shekarau meet in Abuja

Two former governors of Kano state, Rabiu Kwankwaso and Ibrahim Shekarau, met last night in Abuja.

The erstwhile political opponents discussed Kano politics, forthcoming state and national general elections and success of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Newsmen had reported details of the prominent figures’ earlier agreement ahead of 2019.

The Saturday meeting was held at Shekarau’s Asokoro residence and it was prelude to an extended meeting with other party leaders.

Shekarau was quoted as saying there was “no hard feelings, and I don’t bear any grudge”.

Responding, Kwankwaso said he was at peace with Shekarau and that they would collaborate towards the success of the party.

Party leaders at the national level were said to have favoured Kwankwaso to have 51 percent stake in the party structure, having joined the party alongside nine members of the House of Representatives.

A source said: “The party leaders know the political weight of the senator. Aside his being a serving senator, he currently has a serving deputy governor, nine serving Reps and six serving members of the House of Assembly in his political kitty.

“Essentially, he is the most powerful force in the state today. This is what the party at the national level considered to cede the control to him”.

Incumbent Governor Abdullahi Ganduje was Kwankwaso’s deputy for eight years (1999-2003 and 2011 to 2015) but the two fell apart shortly after the 2015 election.

Kwankwaso, a Minister of Defence during the Olusegun Obasanjo administration, joined the APC with other aggrieved PDP governors on November 23 2013.

Two months later (January 29 2014), Shekarau joined the Goodluck Jonathan government and was later appointed Minister of Education.

  • 2019: Kano will be a battle ground

    By Nathaniel Ikyur
An interesting political war will be fought in the ancient city of Kano in the 2019 general elections. And this will be centered around three leading lights in the politics of State.
These are the incumbent governor of the state, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, his predecessor, Sen Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and another former governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau. The three have had a close working relationship with each other. These relationships may not have been the best in the circumstances but they worked all the same.
    HERE IS HOW:
In his first tenure as governor between 1999-2003, Sen Kwankwaso had an altercation with Malam Shekarau, who was then the Permanent Secretary in the Kano state civil service. That was at the time the public launch of Sharia Islamic legal system in Zamfara State began to gain currency across northern states.
Shekarau is a man versed in Islamic tenets. He was said to have defied the directives of the governor to address the Muslim Ummah in the state on the benefits of Sharia as an important part in the lives of Muslims. The governor won’t have it. Pronto, Shekarau was first redeployed and later demoted to a classroom teacher.
Luck however smiled at Shekarau in 2003. Even after losing the ANPP gubernatorial primaries to youthful Alhaji Ibrahim El-Amin, aka Ibrahim Little, the Council of Ulama in the state prevailed on the ANPP presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari to get the ANPP national leadership to give the ticket to Shekarau. It was somewhat messy but the Islamic leaders had their way and Shekarau was presented to INEC to fly the ANPP’s governorship ticket where he defeating Kwankwaso.
Supporters of Kwankwaso have consistently alleged that Shekarau used his eight years as governor to harass their leader and his supporters thereby widening the enmity between them.
In 2011 general elections, Sen Kwankwaso staged a comeback by defeating Alhaji Takai, the ANPP candidate sponsored by Shekarau to win the governorship elections with Dr Ganduje in tow as deputy.
By the time the legacy parties merged to form the All Progressives Congress, APC, Shekarau was a key member in the merger arrangements playing vital roles as one of the leaders of the ANPP. Along the line, leaders of the legacy parties decided that state governor’s who decamped should become leaders of the party in their respective states. This didn’t go down well with people like Shekarau, Ali Modu Sheriff from Borno and Attahiru Bafarawa from Sokoto state. They protested and because their grievances were not attended to, they left the party in anger.
Shekarau joined the PDP and was appointed a minister by the former administration of Goodluck Jonathan.
But three years down the line as a member of the APC, Kwankwaso is unable to hold his membership of the party due to irreconcilable differences with his successor, Ganduje. Reports from Kano shows that the seeming robust relationship between these two former political associates turned sour immediately Ganduje took over power. Much of what may have given rise to this remains speculative except the duo volunteers information.
Now, Sen Kwankwaso has rejoined the PDP where Malam Shekarau is one of the key leaders. And the statement credited to Shekarau indicates that much of their grievances will still play out in the coming months as the nation goes to the polls in 2019.
The departure from which the duo may give Ganduje an upper hand against their ambitions to be president of Nigeria. It then means that the likelihood of coming together may be a tall dream that may never materialise.
The question then remains: will Kwankwaso and Shekarau now close ranks and work together for the success of the PDP in the state against a common foe or will it provide a fertile ground for the APC and Ganduje to maximize the moment and use it’s advantage as party in power and reap from the possible cracks? Time. Just time will provide the answer.
And as it stands now, the followership of all these three gladiators should begin to stick to their lanes and discharge their responsibilities accordingly.

  • 2019: Atiku, Moghalu, Sowore other presidential hopefuls challenge Buhari to debate

As the 2019 election year draws near, presidential aspirants have challenged incumbent, President Muhammadu Buhari to a public debate to come highlight his achievements since 2015 and why Nigerians should return him back to the highly coveted office.

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar; a former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Kingsley Moghalu; a former presidential candidate of the KOWA Party in the 2015 election, Prof. Remi Sonaiya; Publisher, Sahara Reporters, Mr. Omoyele Sowore; Prof. Iyorwuese Hagher; and Prof. Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies are among those who have indicated their interests to participate in a debate and are also challenging President Buhari to participate.

According to the presidential aspirants, if they emerge as their parties’ candidates for the next election, they will engage in any presidential debate they are invited for and would like President Buhari to make himself available for such debates should he also emerge as the candidate of his party, the All Progressives Congress.

Recall that Buhari had in 2015 shunned the last round of a presidential debate organised by the Nigeria Elections Debate Group, which was attended by the then President, Goodluck Jonathan (Peoples Democratic Party), Sonaiya (KOWA Party), Martins Onovo (National Conscience Party), Godson Okoye (United Democratic Party) and Chekwas Okorie (United Peoples Party).

But for the next election, Atiku said he would take part in any presidential debate if he emerged as the PDP candidate.

In a message on Twitter, he gave kudos to the Independent National Electoral Commission for recognising debates as a vital part of democratic process, saying “debates are a vital part of the democratic process.

Our democracy and governance will be better enriched when voters have the opportunity to make the needed distinction in the offerings of those who apply to govern them.”

When asked if he would be ready to face other presidential candidates in a debate, including Buhari, if he emerged as the APC candidate, his media aide, Mr. Paul Ibe, said, “His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar, will make himself available for a debate.”

Former Presidential candidate of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, also said it was important for those seeking to occupy the office of President to participate in a debate.

This, he said, would go a long way in assisting the public to make informed choices about those who want their votes.

Shekarau, who is also seeking to contest for the Presidency on the platform of the PDP, spoke through his Media Adviser, Mallam Sule Ya’u Sule, on Friday, saying he was “prepared to participate in a presidential debate anytime anywhere.”

He said, “It is like attending a job interview, which will provide the prospective employer with an opportunity to assess individual candidates; Nigerians deserve to be given the opportunity to hear directly from those who seek their mandate to occupy the highest office in the land.

If you will recall, His Excellency is not a stranger to debates as a trained teacher and public servant long before he became a politician. He has been involved in explaining and executing policies and plans on how to make this country better.”

Also, Moghalu, a presidential aspirant on the platform of the Young Progressive Party, on Friday, expressed his readiness to confront Buhari in a debate ahead of the 2019 elections.

“Yes, I am fully ready to face the President in a debate. Broadly, the areas that will be of interest to Nigerians are the economy, security, the fight against corruption, health, and education, among others,” Moghalu said in an interview with The Punch.

Moghalu, who expressed worry over the rising incidence of incessant killings and unemployment in the country, said his ambition to contest for the presidency in 2019 was borne out of the realisation that past leaders had failed.

Sonaiya, who has also expressed interest in contesting in the next presidential election, said if she emerged as her party’s candidate, she would “definitely participate in a debate,” adding that Buhari “should participate too as it is a duty; it is one of our duties to strengthen democracy.”

If you talk about strengthening democracy and so on, this is one way to do so and I think that even if there is no law that compels a candidate to participate in a debate, every candidate should see it as a responsibility.

It is one of the platforms to engage with the people. I participated in the debate the last time so there is no reason for me not to participate again,” she said.

According to Sowore, he cannot wait to debate with President Buhari on issues affecting Nigerians.

He said, “I can’t wait to debate with President Buhari, I think Nigerians are anxiously waiting for such an important moment in our political history. A popular debate will afford the President an opportunity to state to the Nigerian public where he thought he performed well and also present us an opportunity to lay before the Nigerian people our programmes of action to lift Nigeria to progress and prosperity.

I decided to run against the President because I came to the conclusion that he has failed in every ramification and ought not to be re-elected to office again for another four-year term.”

Hagher, who hopes to contest for the presidency on the platform of the Social Democratic Party, said he was “ever ready” to have a presidential debate with Buhari, adding that “even if it is now, I’m ready for him. I don’t want to wait, let him come out, he is a colossal failure.”

Another presidential aspirant on the platform of the PDP, Adesanya-Davies, also said that she was ready to face President Buhari in a presidential debate should both of them emerge as candidates of their parties.

Adesanya-Davies said she would like to take the President up on issues concerning the economy, education and security, especially why the Christian girl, Leah Shuaibu, had not been released by the Boko Haram sect.

She explained that though the President did not participate in the 2015 presidential debate, Buhari should be able to be part of the 2019 presidential debate to explain certain things to Nigerians.

Certainly yes; I am ready for a debate if I emerge as the candidate of my party; the PDP. I know that before the 2015 election, President Buhari did not go for any debate. He should not dodge the debate this time if he emerges the candidate of his party.

He (Buhari) should not only be talking to me; he should be talking to the entire Nigerians. We need him to explain why he should be the President and also the Minister of Petroleum. Why did he give a person like Babatunde Fashola multiple portfolios when one portfolio is already difficult to handle?

At such a debate, I will like to discuss the economy and education. We will like to talk about security; we have yet to find the Christian girl (still with the Boko Haram sect),” Adesanya-Davies said.

The presidential aspirant also queried the age and physical ability of the President, saying, “We will talk about the incumbent’s age and his health; why is he coming back again without considering his age and health?”
