Oborevwori’s stronghold in Delta: Power of popular will – By Norbert Chiazor

    By Norbert Chiazor

The defining Supreme Court victory of Delta state Governor, Rt.Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori marked the culmination of valour and grace in the enchanting destiny of one man.

The victorious march of Governor Oborevwori is a long walk in glory, rooted in firmness of resolve, strengthened by the hand of providence.

Governor Oborevwori’s irreversible triumph in Nigeria’s apex court followed an unstoppable winning streak.

The Court of Appeal in lagos, Friday November 24, 2023, resolutely affirmed his gubernatorial election, three months after the Delta State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Asaba, had earlier on September 29, confirmed Oborevwori as the duly elected governor of the state.

The triple court victories dignify the integrity and honour of the judiciary as sacred bastion of democratic values and citizens’ rights in Africa’s most populous nation.

Oborevwori, flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party,PDP, was declared winner of the March 18,2023 Delta governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),after he secured an overwhelming margin of 360,234 votes to defeat Obarisi Ovie Omo-Agege of the All Progressives Congress APC, who trailed behind with 240,229 votes.

With characteristic gusto and abiding faith, he charted a bold course towards the governorship seat in May 2022, when he emerged the gubernatorial candidate of the PDP,  beamed live to the world at Stephen Keshi stadium, Asaba.

Oborevwori particularly polled 590 votes to outrun his closest rival, Olologun David Edevbie, who got 113 to stand a distant second.

The crowning glory came May 29,2023 when Oborevwori had the good fortune of enthronement as governor of Delta state. On that fateful day he joined the prestigious class of democratically elected governors in the annals of history.

Great expectations marked his ascendancy to power as the 5th civilian governor of the state, after his predecessor,a phenomenal pathfinder,Senator Dr.Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa bequeathed a successful legacy.

The life story of Oborevwori is a study in human gallantry, yet bedecked in humble steps.

Born on June 19,1963, to Urhobo parents from Osubi, in Okpe local government area of Delta state,Oborevwori has witnessed interesting metamorphosis as a child, student, businessman, community leader/philanthropist, politician and administrator

Largely self motivated,he embraced the world with all determination. Resilient and focused,he attended Alegbo Primary school Effurun, Oghareki Grammar school ,Oghereki, rising to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Ambros Alli university, Ekpoma and masters in Delta State University Abraka, where he read political Science.

A relentless seeker of improved lot,he prepared his path as future leader, guided by divine mercy. He was the pioneer chairman of Osubi community, (1996- 2003),supervisory councillor for Works,Okpe – 1996,Special Assistant on youth development to Governor James Ibori ( 2003- 2006),Special adviser on land security to Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, (2007-2010) and state coordinator to the Amnesty programme,(2009- 2010).

Oborevwori, followed a wondrous fate,as the longest serving Speaker of Delta state House of Assembly and the first Speaker to become governor in the state.

An excellent manager of men with tremendous capacity for human goodwill,he has consistently shown admirable spirit of tolerance and accommodation beyond tribal, political or religious lines. Most  of his predecessors as speakers were impeached, either for lack of tact or tenacity.

A good team player,he kept the state House of Assembly stable and steady for over six years and has sustained the sagacity on the saddle as governor.

On Inauguration day at Asaba, the state capital, the new governor remarkably rolled out a comprehensive development plan for Deltans and all residents of the state. The M.O.R.E Agenda: Meaningful Development,Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms and Enhanced Peace and Security.

The implementation has drawn salutary impact with Oborevwori governing Delta with confidence and the brightest of prospects.

From initial steps of clearing Warri drainages and provision of transformers to light up parts of the famous oil city, which had been in darkness for years, the governor made an unprecedented achievement.

Governor Oborevwori took a historic step on Monday November 27, 2023, when he performed the ground- breaking ceremony for the construction of multiple bridges and related infrastructure in Warri and Effurun. This followed a ₦78 billion contract earlier signed on October 18 with construction giant,Julius Berger Nigeria Plc.

Details of the four projects are construction of flyover bridge from Enerhen Junction, Effurun, to Marine Gate in Uvwie and Warri South local government areas. Study, road expansion and improvement works on the section of DSC/NPA Expressway from Effurun roundabout to DSC on the Effurun/Patani (East/West) highway, including construction of a cloverleaf interchange at the existing Effurun flyover bridge as well as two pedestrian bridges, in Effurun. Others are construction of flyover bridges at PTI Junction and DSC roundabout, Effurun.

This is the first time the renowned construction firm,Julius Berger would be handling such a huge project in the state.

A significant move towards infrastructural revolution in the state,by the Oborevwori administration.

The determination to transform Delta stands awesome, with applauses from various quarters in the state ,as Oborevwori’s much celebrated street credibility gains freshness.

Thousands of Delta civil servants are rejoicing with #5 billion Naira promotion arrears windfall paid by a humane Sheriff. The financial succour, is instructive ,coming at a period of harsh economic regime of fuel subsidy removal.

The governor also approved the payment of #40 billion pensions for local government retirees,in a benevolent stride to improve the material well being of the senior citizens.

The Oborevwori administration subsequently gave a nod for employment of over two thousand teaching and non -teaching staff across the local government areas in the state, to reduce joblessness in the society.

Barely eight months in office ,the administration has done much completing and commissioning roads and schools’ projects, while laying visible foundations on other critical sectors.

His tenure has been impactful on Asaba capital territory and Okpanam axis.Governor Oborevwori recently commissioned 29 network of roads in Asaba metropolis and auditorium of state -owned Dennis Osadebay university,Anwai,as well as projects at Delta State university of science and Technology,Ozoro.

It has been a break-taking timeline inspecting and addressing projects across Delta as Oborevwori forms and firms up his government

The governor has assured the people of the state of more projects and programmes as he remains resolute in enhancing the quality of life for all residents, in the years ahead.

It is a pleasant surprise that the governor has committed energy to the completion and commissioning of projects initiated by his predecessor.Political leaders across the country have often abandoned projects inherited based on a certain fear that the previous initiators would take the credit.

Sheriff ‘s body language of continuum is an admirable show of wisdom.A good leader handles the past, while building a great future.

He is peacefully ruling multi -ethnic Delta with impact. The state is agog with celebration. Urhobo,Anioma,Itsekiri, Ijaw and Isoko are happy.

Weighing his sociable temperament which has earned him widespread popularity,it becomes easy to grasp why the strength of Oborevwori has remained impeccable.

The public affection he enjoys is rooted in his accessible easy going nature, devoid of distance.

Amiable and approachable, the governor is generally acknowledged as a man of the people, transcending class and clique. He relates freely with the powerful and the weak, rich and poor, old and young.

He commands a positive aura that promotes human self-worth and peace of mind, while enhancing communalism and social progress. This is the motif underpinning why the mighty and minion are in love with him.

With a huge support base from majority of Deltans, Governor Oborevwori stands in a sparkling armour to build a bigger and greater Delta.

He faced obstacles. He fought battles.

He flew on low and high dangers.Fazed to the valleys and mountains.Challenged from all fronts. But fired his fears. Not by power but providence.Standing his foot on firmer podium of life, he conquered his inhibitions and embraced his dreams to the glory of his maker.

With the electoral victory of Oborevwori now sealed with solid legitimacy by the highest court in the land and sanctioned by the Supreme, it is a new dawn.

This is the time for all, including his political rivals to join in the making of a new Delta, guaranteed by an all- inclusive M.O.R.E agenda.

The assurances of Sheriff to be the governor of all Deltans through selfless service should inspire optimism towards a prosperous state that meets the aggregate interests of the people.

The beautiful baton of progress from the suave leader Okowa, is safe in the hands of a receptive successor,in good terms with the high and low in the society.

  • UPU reacts over Oborevwori’s victory at Supreme Court

UPU reacts over Oborevwori’s victory at Supreme Court

The Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) Worldwide has congratulated Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori on his victory at the Supreme Court on Friday.

Speaking to journalists at a Press Conference held at the Urhobo Cultural Centre, Okere, Warri, Delta State on Sunday, President General of UPU, Chief Ese Gam while congratulating Governor Oborevwori, said; “the storm is over”.

The UPU also appealed to the opposition to sheath their swords, join hands and support Governor Sheriff Oborevwori led government to move the State forward.

According to him, “I use this opportunity to appeal and implore all our other sons from other political parties particularly the APC, SDP and Labour Party to come together and let’s reason under the UPU body so that we can be better equipped to assist our son and Executive Governor of Delta State, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori.”

The UPU also congratulated the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, the All Progressives Congress, APC, the Labour Party, LP and the Social Democratic Party, SDP and others who contested the March 18, 2023 governorship election.

Chief Gam said since the election of the incumbent governor, Urhobo nation has been in tentacles. It has been so tensed, very disturbing. The most disturbing part of it, is that all the contending forces are all Urhobo sons. That’s the most disturbing part of it was not a fight between Urhobo ethnic body and any other nationality in Delta State. It was more or less an in-house fight.

“As a matter of fact, the UPU, Urhobo Progress Union, so many things had in mind, were put on hold after consultation with some stakeholders particularly, the traditional rulers.

“Now, I can say confidently that the storm is now over. If the storm is over, we can say too that this press conference is geared towards letting Urhobo nation to know that the cacophony or voices have been collapsed at this particular time.

“We now have a governor on record for four years, God willing, for eight years. If we cannot as an Urhobo body come together, get united in other to move Delta State forward, history will not forgive us.

“Why I say this is because the incumbent governor from the report sheet we are receiving started by hitting the ground running. All these stories about Julius Berger coming to Delta State are stories we never heard before.

“Only about two days ago, somebody said on Facebook that the present governor has not borrowed money to do anything. These are the things we never seen. So, no matter what happens, like I tell people except the Lord build, those who build, build in vein.

“This particular governor is branded and built by God. If not, like he said, he suffered 38 pre-election and post election cases. What can be more difficult than that?

“Having said that, I congratulate the governor. I congratulate all those who contested in the election. Both PDP, APC, Labour Party, SDP and all because they’re all our sons. We congratulate them.”

The UPU President further said; “it’s good for all to come together since the case at the Supreme Court has come to an end.

“In every contest, there must be a winner. There must be a victor. What we don’t want is a vanquish. I know the Governor has a large heart. He is not a punishment officer.

“So, I will on behalf of the UPU which is the umbrella body of the Urhobo Progress Union all over the world implore him and let him know that it is the God that he serves that put him there.

“It’s not by might. Bible says, provision does not come from the North, East, West or South. Rather, it comes from God and does not discriminate.

“You know the story of the prodigal son. Even after wasting the wealth of the father, he still came back. The father was the most joyous.

“Whoever, that comes, whoever that has decided to change his mind to work with this government, we beg the governor to accept such persons wholeheartedly without fear or favour, ill-will.”

  • Supreme Court: Oborevwori surviving 38 lawsuits divine – Aide

Supreme Court: Oborevwori surviving 38 lawsuits divine – Aide

Dr  Latimore Oghenesivbe, Executive Assistant on Communications and Orientation to  Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, says the governor’s survival of 38 lawsuits  is a divine intervention.

Oghenesivbe stated this while  addressing newsmen at a  happy hour he organised to fete members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Saturday in Asaba, the Delta capital.

The celebration followed  the Supreme Court verdict of Friday in Abuja that affirmed Oborevwori’s victory.

He noted that the Apex Court knocked off unpopular candidates who were capitalising on technicalities to upturn the Oborevwori’s victory at the March 18, 2023 governorship election in Delta.

According to Oghenesivbe, the governor survived 38 criminal lawsuits, from party primary to post governorship election, making him the most fortunate and divinely anointed celebrant in the history of constitutional democracy in Nigeria.

“His political detractors fought him from all angles, pressed all manners of frivolous criminal charges, all in an attempt to stop him from becoming the governor.

“And when he eventually won the governorship election with a wide margin, Oborevwori’s traducers flooded the Courts with multifaceted lawsuits to remove him as governor but all their efforts crashed.”

He said that in all the travails of  Oborevwori, God was with him, and that if God exalted a man, no mere mortal could bring him down.

He said the plethora of criminal lawsuits pressed against the governor could have swept him off his feet if not for the grace of God.

He described  the inner peace, wisdom and strength of character the governor exhibited throughout his ordeals in the hands of desperate politicians  hell bent on stealing the peoples mandate given to him at the polls,  as divine.

Oghenesivbe said the nation’s judiciary, particularly the Supreme Court  in all recent judgments, sent strong signals to unpopular candidates  shopping for frivolous technicalities that there it would  never be business as usual.

He added that in the case of Delta, it was clear that petitioners and Appellants claims and prayers were lacking in merit as declared by the Apex Court, and therefore,  laboured in vain to suppress the will of the good people of the state.

He said that Oborevwori’s hands are  clean, his personal and academic records remained unblemished, his genuine intentions to serve the people could not be faulted.

“He truly and genuinely won the 2023 governorship election with a wide margin, winning 21 out of 25 Local Government Areas,   as against his distant rival, Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who won in four.

“Oborevwori campaigned from Ward to Ward, Unit to Unit, Local Government to Government,  marketing his M.O.R.E Agenda to the good people of Delta.

“His opponents were busy casting aspersions, and some of them relied heavily on federal might and legal technicalities to subvert the will of the people to no avail.

“They did all manners of things to stop the move of God, and as we know it in Christiandom, nobody can battle with God and win, the divine principles of ‘Touch not my anointed applies,” he said.

He said  the result of the divine oil of God on Oborevwori’s head played out at the Supreme Court on Friday.

“His academic records were unblemished, his personal records and strength of character cannot be faulted, his landslide victory at the polls was staggering, and above all, God was and still is, with Oborevwori.

” God Touched  on all the 38 criminal litigations across Courts of competent jurisdictions and ended in favour of the governor and his Deputy, Mr Monday Onyeme.

“They divinely and miraculously survived 38 criminal lawsuits to stand tall and remained unbeatable as affirmed by the Apex Court,” Oghenesivbe said.

He urged continued partnership with the media, adding  that, ” constructive criticism remains ideal for good governance, as it morrows positives and negatives,  necessary for nation building.

“But we must abstain from jungle journalism and dissemination of half truth and data manipulations, upholding professional standards and principles of fairness through balanced reporting,” he said.

The Chairman of NUJ, Delta Council, Mr  Churchill Oyowe, thanked the governor’s aide for deeming it necessary to fete Journalists in the state as part of  Oborevwori’s Supreme Court victory celebration.

He said members of the union remained apolitical but noted that the victory of the  governor at the polls was convincing enough to avoid plethora of post election litigations.

He urged politicians to help strengthen and deepen democratic values and culture by accepting defeat to avoid unnecessary wastage of scarce financial resources in post election legal battles.

Oyowe, on behalf of the  state council,  congratulated  Oborevwori on his victory while urging the governor to be magnanimous in victory by extending the olive branch to his opponents.

  • How Oborevwori survived 38 court cases to become Governor

How Oborevwori survived 38 court cases to become Governor

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Friday, said God ordained him to be Governor and expressed appreciation to Him and Deltans for his victory at the Supreme Court.

Oborevwori said he survived 38 cases in various courts up to the Supreme Court from pre-election to post election to become Governor of Delta State.

Speaking at a thanksgiving service at the Government House Chapel Asaba, the Governor who was joined by his wife, Deaconess Tobore, his Deputy Sir Monday Onyeme and wife, Catherine, immediate past Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa and wife, Dame Edith, Governor Oborevwori stressed that God ordained him to be Governor and thanked Deltans for supporting his ambition.

According to him, “I came to this altar before I went to Abuja for this last judgment and I said God is not a man that he should lie. I have promised God that every time He gives me victory I must come here to thank Him.

“I have done it several times and I said I will also return the same day of the victory to thank God. For the Lord has redeemed me.

“This victory is not about me but about the people of Delta state. The immediate past governor said that somebody that would not recognise this altar will never be governor; God has honoured that word.

“This case made it 38 cases for me from pre-election matters to this one. Even the governors who have done eight years did not go through such number of cases.

The Governor who was earlier welcomed from Abuja by a mammoth crowd at the Asaba International Airport, said he was happy that the litigations were over, assuring that he would now concentrate in delivering on his MORE Agenda for the people.

“I was overwhelmed by the crowd and the show of love at the airport. I want to reassure Deltans that my Deputy Governor and I will continue to serve you.

“This victory is for our people to know that our God is faithful and He alone has delivered us.

“I call on my opponents to partner with us to move Delta state forward. This victory is for everyone and like I promised Deltans, I will be the governor for all Deltans,” he said.

In a related development, wild jubilation erupted simultaneously in different parts of Delta State, following the affirmation of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori as the Governor of Delta State by the Supreme Court on Friday morning.

Reacting to the judgment, the immediate past Governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, on his verified Facebook account, wrote, “following today’s historic judgment by the Supreme Court that has declared Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as the duly-elected leader of our great state, Delta, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to His Excellency, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, our Deputy Governor, H.E Monday Onyeme and our esteemed party, the PDP.

“This judgment truly underscores the trust and confidence that the people of our state, the Big Heart of our nation, have placed in the leadership of Governor Oborevwori’s administration and our great party.

“As we celebrate this significant achievement, we must see this as a renewed commitment to work collaboratively for all Deltans by focusing on our common goals, pushing to manifest our shared dreams and aspirations, and working to find solutions to the problems that confront our great state and its remarkable people.”

Also, former Governor of Delta State, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, said, “congratulations to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his family, congratulations to all Deltans and to all well wishers across the world.

“These cases have been quite trying, but for those that have passed through this route, propaganda was a big issue.

“We thank God for the overall result; it is now time to settle down fully and deliver the dividends of democracy.”

Former Deputy Governor of the state, Chief Benjamin Elue, also, reacted to the Supreme Court judgment and he said, “this is heartwarming; congratulations our dear Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori and our Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme; congratulations to all Deltans; we give all the glory to God.

“Now that the battle is over, our Governor can now focus on the task of advancing Delta State; Deltans should expect more development in all spheres to the glory of God Almighty.”
