    By Festus Ahon

“Great oaks,” it is often said, “grow from little acorns.” Though an age-old adage, it remains as true today as when it was first uttered.

In the life and journey of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, the Governor of Delta State, this wise saying finds vivid expression.

Born on June 19, 1963, to the family of Chief Samuel Oborevwori of Osubi in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori’s early education began at Alegbo Primary School, Effurun, where he completed his primary education in 1977. He proceeded to Oghareki Grammar School, Oghareki, for his secondary education, and later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, in 2004. In 2010, he obtained a Master’s degree in the same field from Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka.

Beyond his formal academic pursuits, Sheriff Oborevwori—who holds the distinction of being the longest-serving Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly—has undertaken advanced studies in various prestigious institutions, further preparing him for the demands of leadership.

His educational credentials include: Certificate in Top Executive Leadership Programme, Manchester Business School, UK. Certificate in Legislative Framework for Budget Management, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA. Certificate in Legislative Management and Leadership, International Law Institute, Washington D.C., USA. Certificate in Leading Inclusive Development, London School of Economics and Political Science, UK.Certificate in Advanced Leadership Programme, University of Cambridge, UK.

He is also a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered) and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (FICMC).

Widely regarded as an astute politician with a unique talent for grassroots mobilization, Sheriff Oborevwori’s political career spans both legislative and executive arms of government. He has also served at both the local and state levels of governance.

His public service journey includes: Councillor/Supervisory Councillor for Works, old Okpe Local Government Area (which then included present-day Udu and Uvwie LGAs), 1996. Special Assistant on Youth Development 2003–2006. Special Adviser to Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan on Land Security, 2007–2010. State Coordinator of the Amnesty Programme, 2009–2010. Senior Special Assistant on Security to the State Governor, 2012–2014.

Today, as Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori continues to demonstrate the leadership maturity, political savvy, and developmental focus that have defined his journey—a journey that began humbly but has grown into the towering oak of public service.

    Yet, that is not all.

Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori served as the member representing Okpe State Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly (DTHA) from 2015 to 2019. He was elected Speaker of the Sixth Assembly in 2017 and re-elected Speaker of the Seventh Assembly in 2019—becoming the first Deltan to serve as Speaker across two consecutive assemblies. He also held key national leadership positions as Treasurer of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria (2018–2020) and later as Deputy Chairman of the Conference (2020 until his election as Governor).

Associates describe Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as a deeply empathetic and perceptive leader—one whose love for people transcends status, faith, race, and culture. He is seen as a powerful embodiment of both continuity and change, a bridge builder with a familiar face and a refreshing new vision, clearly outlined in his administration’s MORE Agenda.

The MORE Agenda stands for: Meaningful Development; Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security.

Under Meaningful Development, the Governor is committed to economic growth, environmental sustainability, human capital development, and the delivery of critical infrastructure.

With Opportunities for All, his administration promotes inclusiveness, equity, and fairness, ensuring that all stakeholders are engaged in the development process.

Through Realistic Reforms, he is building on the solid foundation laid by the previous administration under Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is focused on improving governance, enhancing service delivery, and strengthening public sector efficiency. His priorities include boosting the capacity of the civil service, advancing data-driven planning, and fully automating the state’s accounting and human resource management systems.

On Enhanced Peace and Security, Governor Oborevwori is engaging key stakeholders to foster dialogue and unity, promoting cultural and inter-community exchanges, empowering youths through productive ventures to reduce restiveness, and encouraging cooperation among security agencies. He is also strengthening early warning systems to ensure timely and effective conflict resolution.

MORE Agenda: Envisaged Goals and Outcomes

In Africa, it is often said that no one tells a man’s story better than the man himself. In this spirit, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori declares: “With our vision and mission driven by the gearwheel of MORE, I will listen more, do more, and achieve more.” This commitment is clearly articulated in his manifesto.

Today, after two years of dedicated implementation, the MORE Agenda is delivering tangible results across key sectors. Its outcomes include: Increased job creation, Growth in capital inflow, Higher Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), Expansion in the export of raw and processed agricultural products, Strengthening of the state’s economy, Enhanced living standards for Deltans and residents, Environmental rejuvenation and sustainability, Upgraded infrastructure across the state, Improved educational and healthcare systems and greater social stability, reflected in enhanced security of lives and property.

The MORE Agenda continues to chart a progressive and inclusive path for Delta State, positioning it as a model of sustainable development in Nigeria.

Assah-Ewu community felicitates Gov Oborevwori @62

Assah, an Urhobo community of Assah-Ewu clan in Ughelli South local government area of Delta State, has felicitated the State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori on his 62nd birthday celebration.

In a statement released on Thursday, the newly elected President General (PG) of Assah Community Congress, Evang. Philip Onojuvweruo described Rt. Hon. Oborevwori as a talk-and-do governor.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Evang. Philip commended Governor Oborevwori for his leadership style and his dedication to delivering public goods.

“We, the good people of Assah community, join well-meaning Deltans and all Nigerians in celebrating our Governor, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori on his 62nd birthday.

“His commitment to the progress and development of Delta State is evident in the quality of projects he has delivered and the numerous strides made in key sectors of the State economy.

“Indeed, the MORE Agenda of Governor Oborevwori is working, and we are very proud of him. We never doubted the capacity and ability of His Excellency to deliver.

“As our Governor marks this significant milestone, we pray that Almighty God will grant him good health, wisdom, and many more years of fruitful living,” the statement reads.

While acknowledging Oborevwori’s role in fostering unity and cooperation within the State, Onojuvweruo stated that the Governor has proven to be a unifying force, working across political divides to deliver positive outcomes for the people of Delta.

“I equally want to commend him for infrastructural development, particularly in bringing Julius Berger to Delta State to handle major projects in the State,” he stated.

The PG of Assah community noted that himself and the newly elected executives of the community are very much prepared to stand by Governor Oborevwori in his effort to bring the dividends of democracy to the grassroots.

Onojuvweruo used the opportunity of the birthday celebration to draw the attention of the State Governor to the state of some abandoned projects in the Assah community.

He stressed that the abandoned projects have made life unbearable for people of the community and that the Governor should extend his hands of infrastructural development to the community to ensure inclusiveness.

“I also want to remind His Excellency of some projects awarded in 2007 that have remained abandoned.

“The light project has remained abandoned. The 12-kilometer Bedesegha-Assah-Elefe-Edjeko-Omafuvwe road project and the healthcare center are abandoned. These have made life miserable for our people,” he noted.

Onojuvweruo also disclosed that the community primary school and the only secondary school serving the community are is in a deplorable state.

TNG reports that the PG of Assah community and his new executives were elected into office on the 1st of April 2025.

Other executives are: Mr. Amakata Christopher, Vice PG; Mr Odafe Ighohwo, Secretary; Mr Utakpa Robinson, Spokesman; Mr Army Unuade, Treasurer; Mrs Beauty Asemu, Chairlady, and Ms Omote Bridget, Vice Chairlady.

  • As another governor joins ‘assault’ on journalists, free press – By Ehichioya Ezomon

As another governor joins ‘assault’ on journalists, free press – By Ehichioya Ezomon

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has reportedly extended his executive tentacles to the Delta State House of Assembly, where he barred journalists from coverage of the midterm report of his administration’s stewardship since May 29, 2023, when he took office to steer the ship of “The Big Heart Of The Nation” for four years till 2027.

Rather than the normal press conference or interaction with journalists to showcase his “achievements” in the first two years in office, Rt Hon. Oborevwori took the ceremony to the Delta Assembly, where journalists were locked out of the chamber – with visuals showing them milling outside the gate of the complex in Asaba, Delta’s capital city.

A May 29, 2025, report by The Townhill, states that: “A sad occurrence took place yesterday (Wednesday, May 28) at the premises of the Delta State House of Assembly, as over 20 journalists drawn from the mainstream and Online media, who were there to cover the governor’s address marking his second year in office, were disdainfully denied entry.

“They stood outside the gate of the Assembly while the governor was presenting the address, after which he laid it on the table as if he was presenting the yearly Appropriation Bill.

“The media houses barred were: ThisDay, Punch, The Guardian, New Telegraph, Quest TV, Odenigbo Radio, Business News, Emerald News, Nigerian Tribune, Express News, Ndokwa Vanguard, Spade News, Gallant Reporters, Douba Post, Daily Independent, Leadership, Blue Print, The Story, National Pilot, The Hill and National Light.

“As a norm, former Governor James Onanefe Ibori and his successors (Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan and Dr Ifeanyi Okowa) usually held periodic media chats, particularly like yesterday’s occasion, until the incumbent Governor Oborevwori stopped it, opting to use the hallowed chamber of the State Assembly to address Deltans instead.”

This comes on the heels of Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno banning Channels Television crew from the Government House press centre, Uyo, the capital city, for “daring” to file a report on his remarks, publicly confirming his plans to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the crucial 2027 General Election.

At the State Executive Council (Exco) meeting on May 22, Eno, confirming his speculated decision to leave the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), directed his appointees to follow him to the APC, or resign their appointments forthwith. Noting that, “anybody who claims he is not aware of my intention to leave the PDP is still living in the 18th century,” he warned that he’d nothing to negotiate with anyone unwilling to follow his political direction.

“Apart from elected officials, like House of Assembly members and Local Government chairmen, I have nothing to negotiate with you (his appointees),” Eno declared, boasting, “Let me tell you, anybody who believes that when I leave the PDP he will use the party structure to fight me is lying because I will still control the PDP structure.”

These were the remarks the Channels TV crew filed that earned it Eno’s ban from the Government House press centre on May 25.

Media reports on Eno’s alleged action noted that the broadcast “caused embarrassment within the governor’s camp, prompting swift action from the state’s media handlers,” adding that, “the governor was so furious he wanted to sack Ekerete and disband the entire press corps” – referring to Ekerete Udoh, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary.

The actions of Chief Oborevwori and Pastor Eno – and similar behaviours by other government officials and institutions – are a direct and grave assault on the amended 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, which recognises and mandates the mass media to hold government and its officials to public account.

Section 22 of the amended 1999 Constitution of Nigeria provides that, “The press, radio, television and other agencies of the mass media shall at all times be free to uphold… the responsibility and accountability of the Government to the people.”

This power, conferred solely on the media, elevates the press to the “Fourth Estate (Arm) of the Realm (Government) – the other arms being the Legislature, Executive and Judiciary. It’s this authority that Oborevwori and Eno tried/try to subvert by banning and/or barring journalists from coverage of their official activities.

The governors can’t even come under Section 39(3) of the Constitution, which authorises withholding of information received in confidence, as enforcing such confidentiality shall derive only from “any law that is reasonably justifiable in a democratic society.”

Which law supports Oborevwori’s prevention of journalists from covering his midterm report at the House of Assembly? Was the report confidential in line with the Constitution? And which law did Eno rely upon to persuade, if any, the Channels TV crew from reporting his remarks on plans to defect to the APC?

Not surprising, a similar thread holds Oborevwori and Eno together. They hail from the South-South geographical zone of the Niger Delta. They’re first-term governors elected in 2023 on the platform of the PDP, which had ruled both states since 1999. The governors acted in regard to their second-year anniversary in office, in readiness for re-election in 2027 under the APC.

Governor Oborevwori’s officially been received into the APC, along with his predecessor and the PDP vice presidential candidate in the 2023 General Election, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, elected and appointed officials from the national to ward levels, and members and the entire party structure.

Having also officially announced his defection – along with his elected and appointed officials, PDP members and party structure from his “beloved PDP” on Friday, June 9 – Eno awaits an opportune moment to make a public show of being received into the APC.

And as there’s nothing to hide any more, won’t it be incumbent on Governor Eno – if he hadn’t done so – to rescind, and lift his ban on the Channels TV crew, to be free to access the press centre at the Government House, Uyo?

Let it not be assumed that Oborevwori and Eno’s actions against journalists are in character with the public perception, and belief that the APC and the Federal Government of President Bola Tinubu confer on the party governors immunity to act with impunity, and “nothing will happen.”

This claim, which swirls in the camp of the opposition – whose governors aren’t better in dealing with journalists – aligns with the soundbite that, “Once you join the APC, all your sins will be forgiven.” Hence the reported exodus of opposition politicians to the APC, to “avoid” the anti-graft agencies’ searchlight and dragnet!

Yet, if we blame Governors Oborevwori and Eno for their obviously unconstitutional posturing towards the mass media, shouldn’t we also query the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), that’s supposed to oversee the welfare and security of its members, but kept mute in the face of the Oborevwori and Eno actions in the Delta and Akwa Ibom councils?

While the Akwa Ibom NUJ didn’t protest Eno’s banning of Channels TV’s crew from the Government House press centre for carrying out its constitutionally-obligated assignment; the Delta NUJ’s seeming reaction to Oborevwori’s locking out of journalists from the Delta Assembly was beggarly, and an afterthought.

The nearest the NUJ officials came to such a conclusion was a reference to Section 22 of the Constitution, and why Oborevwori hasn’t followed the tradition of his predecessors to engage regularly with the press.

As reported by Banneronlinenews on May 30, a statement by the Delta NUJ Chairman, Comrade Churchill Oyowe and Secretary, Comrade Victor Sorokwu, partly reads: “In a functional democracy, effective governance cannot thrive without deliberate and transparent communication with the media. Unfortunately, under the current administration, media engagement has been largely selective, inconsistent, and insufficiently structured.

“Past administrations, especially under Chief James Ibori and Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, demonstrated strong media relations by institutionalising quarterly press briefings and media parley sessions that created platforms for open, direct interaction between journalists, the governor and government officials. While Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa made modest efforts in this regard, his administration lacked the consistency and broader inclusion needed to sustain such engagement.

“We are concerned that the current administration has allowed this tradition to lapse, thereby widening the gap between the government and the organised media. If left unaddressed, this could have adverse consequences for public trust and how the administration is ultimately assessed in the annals of history.

“Let it be made clear: this intervention is not driven by animosity or self-interest, but by a genuine desire to see the government succeed in deepening democratic ideals. It is an objective and professional reflection of our constitutional responsibility as the Fourth Estate in Government.

“The good news is that it is not too late. The Governor has both the time and the opportunity to recalibrate his media engagement strategy. We urge His Excellency to embrace a more transparent, inclusive, and constitutionally aligned approach, anchored on regular, statewide press interactions via live broadcasts, radio, television, and physical briefings involving journalists across all media platforms.

“As a Council, our mission is not to confront, but to constructively chart a course that advances both governance and journalism in Delta State. We are ready to partner with the government in building a vibrant culture of openness, accountability, and mutual respect between the state and the media.”

Of course, the Delta NUJ didn’t forget to praise Oborevwori’s increased stipends to journalists, and his two-year achievements in office. “We acknowledge and appreciate the 100% increase in stipends to some journalists across the state. Though modest, this gesture signals a recognition of the media’s vital role in promoting democracy and development.

“However, this gesture has not assuaged expectations of Journalists in Delta State. The NUJ Delta Council calls for a greater responsiveness in the area of media engagement and public accountability.”

Listing the governor’s achievements, the NUJ said: “From the implementation of the new minimum wage, regular payment of workers’ salaries, to pensioners to women and youth empowerment initiatives; infrastructure projects – roads, drains, bridges, and flyovers – as well as sustained peace-building efforts; the administration has demonstrated capacity and commitment to governance.

“For these, the Council commends the Governor for acceding to the expectations of many and proving opponents wrong, who might have underestimated his ability to deliver on his administration’s ‘MORE’ Agenda.”

As the Delta NUJ rightly stated, its mission “is not to confront, but to constructively chart a course that advances both governance and journalism in Delta State.” Still, the NUJ shouldn’t close its eyes to or gloss over it when state governors – as reported in the instant cases in Delta and Akwa Ibom – deliberately want to abridge journalists’ right to hold the government and its officials to account!

Delta Exco approves multi-billion Naira road projects, N6.7bn UBEC counterpart fund

The Delta State Executive Council, Thursday, approved series of multi-billion naira road construction and rehabilitation projects aimed at improving infrastructure and boosting economic activities across the state.

The council also approved the release of N6.7 billion as the state’s counterpart funding to access the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) grant for educational development.

The approvals, which were announced at the end of the State Exco meeting presided over by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in Asaba, are part of the administration’s ongoing efforts to enhance road connectivity in urban and rural communities, while also strengthening the basic education sector.

The Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, told journalists that the road projects cut across the three senatorial districts and include both new constructions and major rehabilitations, with a focus on economic viability, accessibility, and long-term durability.

Flanked by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon, Aniagwu said Exco approved significant investments in road infrastructure to accelerate economic activities and improve the quality of life.

He stated that the N6.7 billion Universal Basic Education counterpart funding will enable the state to draw matching grants for the construction, renovation, and equipping of public schools.

He emphasized that the dual focus on roads and education aligns with Governor Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E. Agenda, which prioritizes infrastructural renewal and human capital development.

“There were a lot of considerations at today’s Exco meeting, ranging from road construction to improvements in our education sector. There are some communities today where we had the opportunity to approve and appointment of royal fathers,” Aniagwu said.

“Also approved are the Mereje–Ekokor–Erogho Road Phase 1, the construction of the Delta State House of Assembly’s Cooperative Estate Road, Okpanam, and Chief Wellington Oyibo Community Road in Mosogar.”

  • Gov Oborevwori issues firm warning to SEC members

Gov Oborevwori issues firm warning to SEC members

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has issued a firm warning to members of the State Executive Council, emphasizing that performance, rather than tale bearing will determine their continued stay in office.

Speaking on Monday during the inauguration of eight newly built duplexes at the Commissioners’ Quarters in Asaba, the governor praised his commissioners for their loyalty and hard work, but stressed that under-performance would not be tolerated.

“I want to, once again, commend our commissioners for being loyal, dedicated, and hardworking.

“You know there are a lot of rumours saying the Governor wants to dissolve the Exco. These people haven’t even heard from me; this just shows that people like too much talk”, he said.

The Governor clarified that while there is no blanket dissolution plan, under-performing commissioners would be shown the door.

“If you are not performing, we will drop you, and that will not affect other people,” he said. “If you are performing, you will stay. Like now, two or three people are not performing. I told one of them today at the chapel, you are not doing well”, he added.

The governor emphasized the need for initiative and visibility from commissioners.

Governor Oborevwori, said. “As a commissioner, we don’t see you. You talk, carry your memo, and look for the Governor, because the Governor will not come looking for you. There are others who are seeking me out; you have to bring energy and initiative into your ministry.”

He affirmed his administration’s commitment to accountability by holding each commissioner directly accountable for their ministry’s progress.

He said, “If there is a problem in any ministry, hold the commissioner responsible. Any ministry that is doing very well shows that the commissioner is doing very well.

“We have a lot of projects to commission. I don’t think we will stop before the end of this year. We may not be able to commission all of them, but I believe we will do our best.

“We want to emulate Mr. President in what he did on Saturday during the commissioning. They articulated all the projects and decided to stay in one particular location to commission them.

“That is exactly what we will do in Warri on Wednesday. Since we have several projects to commission; we will articulate them, put them together, and stay in one place to cut the tape and commission all of them.

“But today, we are here to commission eight units of four-bedroom duplexes, each with two boys’ quarters attached. We decided to build these because, when we came in, we discovered that there were only 22 buildings here at the Commissioners’ Quarters, and the number of commissioners is more than 22.

“So, there was no way we could accommodate all of them, which led us to this decision. This is a demonstration of our commitment to the well-being of top government functionaries.”

The Dean of Commissioners and Commissioner for Finance, Chief Fidelis Tilije, thanked Governor Oborevwori for approving the construction of the new residential quarters and appealed for the renovation of the 22 old quarters.

The Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Godknows Angele, said the project consists of eight duplexes with attached two boys’ quarters and lounges, among others, and commended Governor Oborevwori for his support for completion of the projects.

2nd anniversary: Delta more united in APC – Gov Oborevwori

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has said stakeholders in the State are more united under the All Progressives Congress (APC) now than before.

Governor Oborevwori stated this at a Thanksgiving and Praise Day held to mark his administration’s second anniversary in Asaba on Thursday.

He said that giving thanks was an application for God to do more for the people, adding that only the living could give thanks to God.

The governor said though Delta is complex but everyone would be carried along in the scheme of  things and nobody would be left behind.

He noted that it has been  two years of consolidating on the achievements, adding that as a state, it has been a custom to give thanks to God every year.

While acknowledging the presence of  the APC stalwarts; Elder Omeni Sobotie, State APC Chairman, the three senators and all the members of House of representatives and the House of Assembly, Oborevwori thanked God for the unity.

According to him,  nobody will be neglected,  it is only with unity that we can move forward.

He said that God has been faithful since 1999 by keeping many alive to witness today and thanked Oborevwori for sustaining the projects initiated  by his predecessor , Ifeanyi Okowa.

He said, “there is a reason to give thanks to God. For two months I have not driven through this road. I drove from Ughelli to Asaba it took us one hour and nine minute without potholes”
