Delta guber verdict: Omo-Agege appeals for calm

…says we’ll continue to pursue our cause and case
    …this judgement was not expected

Gubernatorial candidate of the APC in the last election, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has called on his supporters to remain calm as the cause of their case is being pursued.

This was contained in a statement he personally signed on Friday.

Today, the 29th of September, 2023, the Governorship Election Tribunal held in Asaba, Delta State gave judgement in our petition challenging the return of Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The outcome is not what we expected.

“Let it be said with every sense of conviction and responsibility that in reaching its judgment, the Tribunal in Asaba, in our respectful view, failed to avert its mind to the intendment of the plethora of unambiguous innovations now contained in the Electoral Act, 2022. In relation to the instant petition, these are most particularly evident in sections 137 and 73(2) and paragraph 46(4) [First Schedule) of the Act mandating the Tribunal on how to properly handle the required evidence duly placed before it by the petitioners in proof of the petition and corroborated by INEC itself.

“We hold the reasoned view that if the Tribunal dutifully attended to the unassailable evidence in support of ALL the polling unit results and every other relevant electoral document duly tendered before it using our present electoral jurisprudence and benchmarks already set by the Supreme Court as its compass, today’s outcome would have been clearly in our favour.

“As chief proponents of a clean electoral system, we disagree that ballots obtained in manifest breach of the Electoral Act and our Constitution are lawful and valid votes in the 2023 Delta State Governorship Election. Further, we also do not believe that the law permits the Tribunal to do nothing having found as a matter of fact and consistent with the petition that votes were arbitrarily inflated in favour of our opponents.

“Also, we do not believe that today’s judgment is in consonance with the letters and spirit of the new Act which, for the first time in our electoral history and jurisprudence, now unequivocally mandates a Tribunal to reject and cancel an election conducted at a polling unit if the serial numbers and other identities of the electoral materials used are not formally recorded into the INEC prescribed forms. We know that where this particular infraction is manifest on documentary evidence before the tribunal, the Act clearly says such must be thoroughly considered by a Tribunal and the result cancelled, as same is unlawful. This, regrettably, is not the case with the instant decision.

“So, let us be clear. For the matters mentioned herein and much more, we say with calm confidence and conviction that today’s judgment is nothing but a grave injustice that will not stand appellate scrutiny.

“But we must thank their Lordships for all they did as humans given the very toxic and intimidating environment in which they operated in the last six months. We wish them well.

In view of the foregoing, I have instructed my erudite legal team to immediately appeal the judgement of the Tribunal. We are grateful for their steady industry and extraordinary commitment.

“I call on our people to remain calm and law-abiding. We came into this race to rescue our beloved Delta State knowing that it will not be a smooth sail. So, keep hope alive. With God, we shall get to our destination under His abiding grace.

  • What Chief Clark said on award of N78bn Effurun/Warri flyover contract

What Chief Clark said on award of N78bn Effurun/Warri flyover contract

Ijaw National Leader and convener of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Chief Edwin Clark, has written an open letter to thank  Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State over the N78 billion contract recently awarded to Julius Berger Nigeria Limited.

The contracts were for the construction of three flyover bridges, cloverleaf and road expansion in Effurun and Warri areas of the state.

Clark, a former Minister of Information, described Oborevwori’s decision to undertake the mega projects as a right step towards fulfilling his electioneering campaign promises to the residents of the twin cities of Effurun and Warri.

The elated elder statesman said the projects signalled that Oborevwori had started well especially giving facelift to the twin-cities of Effurun and Warri.

In a letter addressed to Governor Oborevwori on Monday, Chief Clark expressed satisfaction with the projects, while urging him to extend similar development to other parts of the state.

He also told the governor that he has his blessings in his quest to bring infrastructural development to the state.

“I write to express on behalf of the people of Warri and elders of Warri referred to as ‘WARRI BOYS’ our gratitude and appreciation for the great plan you have for the rehabilitation and urban renewal of our hometown, Warri/Effurun. Particularly, the recent award of some major contracts to a reputable company such as Julius Berger in the sum of #78 billion is a show of your sincerity of purpose. Indeed, I understand that part payment has been made to the contractors.

“I recall in your inaugural speech on 29th May, 2023, you promised that you will give Warri a facelift. The media reported thus; ‘the newly sworn in Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori has vowed to give special attention to the oil-rich city of Warri, the commercial hub to advance the economy of the State’.

“And you were quoted directly as saying; ‘Warri the commercial nerve centre of the State will be given special attention under this administration. The process has already commenced with the establishment of the Warri, Uvwie and Environs Development Agency (WUEDA)’.

“The recent contract which you have awarded include: The design and construction of a flyover bridge at the Enerhen junction to Marine Gate; Study design, construction of road expansion and improvement work on the DSC/NPA Expressway from Effurun roundabout to the Delta Steel Complex(DSC) Round-about; and Construction of a ¾ Clover Interchange at the existing Effurun flyover bridge and two pedestrian bridges.

“Others are: the design and construction of a flyover bridge at the ever busy Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) junction; and DSC Round-about along Effurun/Patani, East-West Highway, Effurun in Uvwie LGA.

“I am confident that the above contracts when completed, will no doubt, bring great joy and satisfaction to the indigenes and inhabitants of the Old Delta Province and will definitely bring back the old glory of Warri which as you know is comprised of various heavily oil producing communities.

“On the long run, this will be to the benefit of the entire Delta, as this boost further economic and social growth of our main economic town.

“It is obvious that you have started your tenure very well and I am confident you will extend this pattern to other major towns in the state. Already, I understand that you have awarded similar contracts for work in some of the Federal highways connecting some of the major towns”.

The elder statesman assured Governor Oborevwori of his full support and encouragement and urged him to always reach out to him for his wise counsel and support at all times.

“Be confident that you have my full support and encouragement. I want you to be at liberty to always reach me whenever my attention is needed for counsel and needed support.

“Finally, my dear son, you have started well, in the fulfillment of your promise to the people of Delta State and I urge you to carry on with your good works. My fatherly prayers and good wishes are with you always,” Clark said.

  • Nigerians desirous of true electoral process – Oborevwori

Nigerians desirous of true electoral process – Oborevwori

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has charged electoral umpires to ensure free, fair, transparent, and credible elections that will generally reflect the will of the people.

Governor Oborevwori who gave the charge while swearing-in Chairman and members of the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission DSIEC, on Monday in Asaba, said Nigerians from all walks of life were desirous of an electoral process where the will of the people would prevail.

Those sworn-in include; Dr Jerry Agbaike as Chairman while Mr James Umukoro; Mr Friday Seimode; Mrs Light Diden; Mr Imasua Azogbulem; Mr Chris Onwuma and Chief Frank Oru are members.

The Governor also swore-in the Chairman and members of the Delta State Local Government Service Commission with Hon. Joseph Otirhue as Chairman; while Mr. Anslem Nwokenye; Dame Minnie Igbrude and Hon. Philomena Ededey are members.

Similarly, Delta State Contributory Health Commission has Dr. Austin Obidi as Chairman and Dr. Isaac Akpoveta as Director-General.

He said the primary responsibility of (DSIEC) is to organize, undertake, and supervise all elections to local government councils within the state in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as altered).

Governor Oborevwori said that members of the Commission were carefully selected to reflect the values of probity, accountability, and strength of character that they should possess.

He urged members of the Commission to ensure that the will of voters prevails at all times in all elections they will organise.

The Governor said: “It goes without saying that Nigerians from all walks of life are desirous of an electoral process where the will of the people prevail. Deltans are no exception.

“Hence, I charge the new members of DSIEC to model the values of honesty, transparency, impartiality, courage, and respect for the rule of law.

“As we gear up for the local government elections in 2024, it is my earnest expectation that you will hit the ground running.

“It is important that you immediately begin the process of interfacing with all registered political parties in the State and ensure free flow of information from the Commission to them and other relevant stakeholders.

“The rules and procedures for electioneering campaigns must be clearly spelt out and in a timely fashion.

“In order to have free, fair, transparent, and credible elections, electoral officers, especially ad-hoc staff, must be adequately trained.

“This has been a major undoing with elections in Nigeria, and I trust that you will avoid the ugly scenario of electoral officers who are clueless about their job by ensuring that they are grounded in sound democratic election processes.

“Similarly, I expect you to guide against the recurring problems of late arrivals of electoral materials and personnel to the polling units. This will ensure a seamless voting process and elicit voter confidence”.

For the Chairman and Members of the Delta State Local Government Service Commission, Governor Oborevwori said they have the important role of supervising the management of the affairs of the local government councils, especially as it relates to the recruitment, promotion, discipline, and career development of staff of the councils.

He said members of the Commission are persons of integrity who will discharge their mandate without bias, prejudice, and favouritism. I am confident that the new Chairman and Members of the Commission meet the above criteria.

“As the third tier of government, local government councils are very critical in the governance process because they are the arm of government closest to the grassroots.

“Hence, for the policies and programmes of any government to have the desired impact, the local government councils must be alive to their constitutional responsibilities.

“To achieve our objective of inclusive governance and enhanced service delivery at the grassroots level, I charge the new members to provide strong and effective leadership that will strengthen local government administration for the purpose of meeting the needs and aspirations of our people.

“Furthermore, your decisions must be fair, just, and transparent in order to deliver a highly professional and motivated workforce. In all your policies and actions, you should strive to boost professionalism, develop leadership skills in the workforce, and deepen the organizational capacity of the councils,” he said.

He urged the Chairman and Director-General of the Delta State Contributory Health Commission to exhibit the virtues of probity, transparency and accountability in their quest for Universal Health Coverage for Deltans.

Responding on behalf of the appointees, Dr Austin Obidi thanked Governor Oborevwori for finding them fit to serve and pledged to uphold the principles of probity, transparency and accountability in the discharge of their duties.

He said no efforts will be spared in their quest to contribute in advancing the M.O.R.E Agenda of the administration.

The State Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Arthur Akpowowo, State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Kingsley Esiso,  Professor Sam Oyovbaire, Air Vice Marshall Frank Ajobena and Chief Mrs Nkem Okwuofu were among dignitaries that attended the ceremony.

Delta ‘Mecca’ for sports in Nigeria – Oborevwori

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Saturday, said the State has overtime become the nation’s sports destination.

Governor Oborevwori stated this in his remarks at the opening ceremony of the 7th Edition of the National Youth Games holding at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.

He congratulated the Federal Ministry of Sports Development for their consistency and dedication in organizing the National Youth Games.

He remarked that the National Youth Games had come to stay describing it “as a powerful vehicle to discover new talents from the grassroots and ensure that there is a standard programme for athletes’ succession in the country.

“Aside from athlete development, the National Youth Games has also proven to be a cost-effective and reliable tool to promote national unity and advance development and peace agendas of both the national and sub-national governments.

“Indeed, when effectively harnessed, sports have the power to positively impact on the economic and social wellbeing of any society.

He said the United Nations has recognized sports as an important enabler to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

According to the global body, sport plays a great role in “the realization of development and peace in its promotion of tolerance and respect and the contributions it makes to the empowerment of women and of young people, individuals and communities as well as to health, education and social inclusion objectives.

“During this year’s International Day of Sports for Development and Peace, the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed observed and I quote: ‘sport has the power to align our passion, energy, and enthusiasm around a collective cause. And that is precisely when hope can be nurtured and trust can be regained. It is in our collective interest to harness the tremendous power of sport to help build a better and more sustainable future for all.’

“Our belief in these ideals is unshakable. Hence, the Government of Delta State has continued to make its resources available to host national and international sporting competitions.

“In 2018, we hosted the African Senior Athletics Championship, and, in November 2022, the 21st National Sports Festival.

“Meanwhile, the Stephen Keshi Stadium has become a venue of choice for hosting national football championships. Clearly, Delta is becoming the mecca of sports in Nigeria”.

He assured participants of a peaceful and exciting games, adding that adequate arrangements have been made for hitch-free movement across the length and breadth of the city.

He commended the Delta State Sports Commission, the Local Organising Committee, the support staff, and all involved in the planning and organization of the event, “The government and good people of Delta State owe you a debt of gratitude for your sacrifice, hard work, dedication, and determination to ensure a smooth and successful athletics competition”.

He charged the athletes to use the games to launch themselves to national and international prominence.

“To all our athletes, the moment of truth has arrived. Your family, friends, and well-wishers are rooting for you to seize the moment and launch yourself into national prominence.

“I trust that you are mindful of the potentials that this opportunity holds for your future. So, I urge you to rededicate yourselves to the timeless virtues of discipline, endurance, perseverance, and good sportsmanship.

“As the saying goes, records are meant to be broken. So, I challenge you to set new records and take Nigerian sports to another level,” Governor Oborevwori stated.

Earlier while receiving the Minister and his delegation, Oborevwori said that “Delta is now a mecca for sporting activities and I want to assure you that we have been hosting lots of sports activities and we have never had any crisis or any security issues and I want to assure you that all arrangements have been made to ensure a hitch-free exercise.

“We have released the necessary funds to ensure the games goes on smoothly and all arrangements have been put in place to ensure a successful hosting,” he said.

President Bola Tinubu while declaring open the National Youth Games, urged the athletes to promote the spirit of friendship and sportsmanship amongst all states.

The President who was represented by the Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh called on all state officials and athletes to compete with the spirit of fairness and togetherness, while putting the interests of the nation first.

The Minister who spoke earlier during a visit to Governor Oborevwori thanked the Governor and the good people of Delta for accepting to host the games.

“The National Youth Games are a baby of the Federal Ministry of Sports Development and it is on the 7th Edition. The previous ones have all been located in Ilorin, Kwara State.

“This is the first time that Delta State is hosting the games and I must thank the government and people of Delta State very heartily for accepting to be the host.

“From the briefs I have received since I became Minister of Sports Development, I am aware that this games are going to be in Delta for the next couple of years and I thank you for this.

“The National Youth Games are intended to discover talents amongst our young boys and girls age not more than 15. The idea is that sports men and women we engage in our sports will be getting to their retirement and we need to have a pool of talented men and women boys and girls and we take care of them.

“The challenge for us is that of transitioning them in that early stages and we are hoping that working with states like Delta we will be able to accomplish this,”

He said the National Youth Games engenders National unity like the National Youth Service Corps, adding that it gives young boys and girls the opportunity to work and compete together.

“It is our hope that the National Youth Games will be able to assist the government and the people of Nigerians to continue to live in peace and unity with one another,” he said.

The Games will take place between September 23rd – 30th, 2023 across multiple venues in the Delta state capital.

JUST IN: Oborevwori approves palliatives for students in Delta

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has approved 25 percent reduction in acceptance fees payable in the four State-owned Universities as part of palliatives for students.

The Governor’s approval was contained in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, on Wednesday in Asaba.

The statement said the reduction in the acceptance fee was in line with measures taken by the Delta State Government to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal on citizens.

Ahon further said the 25 percent reduction in acceptance fee is applicable to new students at the State-owned Universities, viz. Delta State University, Abraka; Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro; University of Delta, Agbor and the Dennis Osadebay University, Anwai-Asaba.

  • Nigeria has no reason to import petrol – Oborevwori

Nigeria has no reason to import petrol – Oborevwori

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Tuesday, urged the Federal Government and relevant stakeholders to work towards revitalising the nation’s refineries, insisting that Nigeria has no reason to import petrol with its cost implications on the economy.

Governor Oborevwori stated this when he received the National Executive Committee of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) led by the National President, Comrade Williams Akporeha at Government House, Asaba.

He said there was no justification for an oil producing nation with four refineries to resort to fuel importation for its local consumption.

The Governor described NUPENG as a critical stakeholder in the Nigerian project and thanked the President and the union for the support given to him during and after the general elections.

Governor Oborevwori said: “I am happy that NUPENG have been in this struggle for years and I congratulate you for the struggle for more efficient and people oriented oil and gas sector and I celebrate you because you are a critical stakeholder in the Nigeria project.

“A lot of things have been happening. For years, our refineries have been down and nobody talks about how we can put our refineries to use; instead, we are importing petroleum products.

“This is also biting on the economy of this country. Look at the prices of things which have gone up because we are not producing. If we were producing, we won’t have these challenges.

“The products we use today are being imported and we have refineries that are not working.

“I have promised Deltans in my M.O.R.E Agenda that security is very key. Infrastructure is there too. As you now know, most of the projects just awarded in Warri, will favour NUPENG because without good roads, you can’t lift your products.

“Yesterday, my Deputy Governor went on inspection with the Honourable Minister of Works to inspect the Benin/Warri road and the Amukpe/Agbor road.

“Today, the Minister of Works is also going through the Ughelli/Patani/Bayelsa road to ascertain the level of damage on those roads. Without good roads we can’t have access.

“As a state, we have embarked on the dualisation of the Ughelli-Asaba road, we have done about 70 percent. If we didn’t embark on that road, we would not hhave had access to the capital city today. I am very sure that by this time next year, we will be completing the dualisation.”

He commended NUPENG for its intention to build skill acquisition centre to empower youths of the state on relevant oil and gas industry skills and pledged the collaboration of the state for the success of the project.

“I am happy about the skill acquisition and we are going to partner with you. We will work with the Ministry of Lands to make sure that you get land to develop. Government will give you the land, your own is to build the skill acquisition centre.

“As a youth friendly governor, I appointed over 10 youths below 40 years into my government. So, the skill acquisition centre is very important”.

Earlier, Comrade Akporeha said they were in Asaba to congratulate the Governor on his assumption of office and for his laudable achievements in 100 days in the saddle.

He said that Delta is an investment destination any time and urged the Governor to create the enabling environment for more investors to come and invest in the state.

The NUPENG boss while thanking the Governor for his workers’ friendly disposition, appealed for the state government’s assistance in rehabilitating the deplorable federal roads leading to fuel depots in the state

Akporeha said NUPENG had concluded plans to build a skill acquisition centre in Warri to train youths in the state.

  • Oborevwori will develop all parts of Delta – Obiodeh

Oborevwori will develop all parts of Delta – Obiodeh

Delta State Commissioner for Lands, Surveys and Urban Development, Chief Emamusi Obiodeh has called on Deltans to be patient with the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori administration, saying that the governor was determined to develop all parts of the state.

He said that with the Governor’s M.O.R.E Agenda, more attention would be given to communities and urban centres within the state.

He made the call, on Monday in Asaba, when a delegation of his kinsmen from Igbide Kingdom, led by Odiologbo of Igbide Kingdom, Chief Godspower Okpohro paid him a congratulatory visit at his office.

He stressed that while the Oborevwori administration promised to do more for Deltans, the people must exercise patience with the administration as development cannot get to all parts of the state at once.

He commended the community leaders for their support for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and for voting enmasse for Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and all candidates of the party in the last general election.

On the request for the construction of the Olomoro – Igbide Road, the Commissioner appealed for patience, saying “Gov. Oborevwori led administration is working tirelessly to meet his electoral promises to the people.

“Let’s be patient and show understanding as development will go round all the nooks and crannies of Delta State.

“The road you have asked for will bring meaningful development to the communities along that route and it is within the M.O.R.E Agenda of the Governor.

“Your request is germane but government cannot attend to everything at once so we have to be patient with the state government while we explore all avenues to get it approved for reconstruction.

“From the numerous achievements recorded by Governor Oborevwori in his first 100 days in office, I can assure you that working in synergy with all stakeholders across the state, a lot more will be done to advance the state in terms of infrastructural and human capital development,” Obiodeh stated.

Earlier, Spokesman of the group, Dr Abundance Ekaba told the Commissioner they were in his office to congratulate him on his appointment and urged him to appeal to the Governor for the construction of the Olomoro – Igbide Road.

He said the road was in terrible shape thereby making movements in and out of the community a very harrowing experience.

The group also visited the member representing Isoko South Constituency II in the State House of Assembly, Hon Ferguson Onwo and the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Prince Johnson Erijo where they congratulated them on their election and appointment and appealed for the construction of the road leading to the community.

Responding Hon. Onwo said the road was an important access to both Olomoro and Igbide communities and beyond, assuring that there will be a collaboration between the legislature and the executive to ensure the road was constructed.

On his part, Erijo pledged the collaboration of his office to ensure the road’s construction and further the development of Isoko and Delta in general.

  • My administration is committed to fiscal discipline – Oborevwori

My administration is committed to fiscal discipline – Oborevwori

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Monday, said his administration was irrevocably committed to fiscal discipline, honesty, prudence, and transparency in government.

Governor Oborevwori stated this at the Delta State Governance and Policy Direction Conversation organised by the African College of Governance, an Institute of the Revive Africa Initiative held in Asaba on Monday.

The theme of the discussion is “More Agenda: Economic Dynamics of Policy Direction, Open Governance and the Youth Inclusivity Question” also featured a book presentation on “The Thoughts and Perspectives of Rt. Hon. Ben Rollands Igbakpa on Leadership and Governance”.

The Governor who said the theme of the conversation was apt, commended the group for the gesture, adding that his administration in the past three months focused on ensuring fiscal responsibility and judicious resource allocation in completing ongoing projects as well as youth inclusivity in governance.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Johnson Erijo, Gov. Oborevwori said, with the goal of advancing Delta, the M.O.R.E agenda covers policy thrusts for inclusive and sustainable economic growth and private sector job creation, stronger human capital, accelerated infrastructural development and more efficient and effective governance and accountability systems.

“It is gladdening that my friend and brother, Hon. Rollands Igbakpa has thought it worthwhile for us to have this policy dialogue that zeroes in on the MORE agenda of this administration.

“For those of us who may not be aware, M.O.R.E is an acronym for:
Meaningful Development; Opportunities for All; Realistic Reforms; and Enhanced Peace and Security.

“It provides the roadmap to fastrack economic growth, diversify the economy, promote investment, impose strict fiscal discipline, create wealth, build bridges of social unity, and develop a knowledge-based economy aimed at giving our people the hope of a better, rewarding, and fulfilling future.

“The M.O.R.E agenda is ultimately about good governance, which today’s conversation is about. I believe the starting point for good governance is instituting a regime of fiscal discipline and responsibility.

“In our current operating environment of anxiety and uncertainty occasioned by the abrupt removal of fuel subsidy and continuing devaluation of the naira, the challenge for political leaders at all levels of governance is to think outside the box, and demonstrate the highest levels of discipline, honesty, prudence, and transparency in government.

“To these values we are totally and irrevocably committed, and we will do everything within our power as a government to entrench them in public administration”.

He said since he came on board three and half months ago, his administration has shown a resolve to ensure that public funds are judiciously utilized with the completion of some projects he met.

On youth inclusivity, Gov. Oborevwori said, “the composition of the State Executive Council is an undeniable proof of our commitment to youth inclusivity in governance.

“At least, ten of the recently sworn-in commissioners are below the age of 40. That is unprecedented. As I pointed out during their swearing-in, the euphoria that greeted their nomination shows that we are on the right track.

“It is now incumbent on these appointees to prove that they are not too young to lead. Failure on their part, would not portend for future consideration of youths in the governance process.

“But I am persuaded that this crop of appointees will acquit themselves creditably because some of them have started on a good note,” he stated.

He said his administration was committed to ensuring quality project delivery in the state by engaging contractors with high pedigree for project delivery.

“One of the priorities of this administration is to ensure that the execution of road and physical infrastructure are handled by contractors with pedigree and proven track record of performance.

“As you may have heard, we recently engaged Julius Berger Plc to construct three flyovers in the Warri and Uvwie axis as part of our ongoing efforts to give the oil city and environs  a facelift, but even more significantly to remedy the persistent traffic congestion in Warri/Uvwie and environs.

“This administration will not compromise when it comes to the quality of roads and projects that will be executed. Hence, only contractors, local and international, with the requisite competence, and who share our vision of excellence will be engaged,” Oborevwori added.

Former Member House of Representatives, Hon. Ben Igbakpa thanked the organisers for finding him worthy to be a mentor and called on leaders to make it a point of duty to mentor the younger generation.

He urged the youths to learn from the older generation to boost their knowledge and experience.

On his part, former Speaker of the Akwa-Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Luke Onofiok urged youths to develop themselves in order to prepare for leadership positions, adding that only the prepared can be mentored.

Welcoming guests earlier, Director General of the Revive Africa Initiative, Ugagaoghene Ogheneyole urged stakeholders to do more in setting agenda to drive polices geared towards serving the most fundamental needs of the people.

He called for more awareness drive on policy, budget analysis open governance through citizens engagement.

  • Delta State: One hundred days of ‘Sherrified’ governance – By Hope Eghagha

Delta State: One hundred days of ‘Sherrified’ governance – By Hope Eghagha

It is now one hundred days since Elder Sheriff Francis Oborevwori took over the reins of power as democratically elected governor in Delta State in a well, if you like, fiercely contested gubernatorial election. Instructively and expectedly, there has been no pussyfooting in policy initiatives and implementation. To be sure, a man who served the state as House Speaker for six years and worked closely with the immediate past governor while in office, recondite administrative experience in state matters has definitely served this humble, calm, friendly, openminded, down-to-earth, and pragmatic man excellently. He therefore deserves our congratulations and encouragement on this milestone. The eight-year sojourn in Government House Asaba has just started.

Oborevwori has also patiently and palpably established one fact: he is fully in charge of the government of Delta State. To be sure, any chief executive who craves success knows they must carry all stakeholders along in decision making. Broad consultations are crucial. Stakeholders and party leaders need to be brought into the picture. The two former governors of the state who threw their hats into the ring to ensure that he emerged must be routinely consulted. It is commonsense to do so, especially with Dr. Okowa who backed Oborevwori with all the energy and forces he could muster. But the buck stops somewhere: the desk of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori!

Measurement of success is often hinged on deliverables on appointments, short-term interventions in projects, ability to relate with persons from all strata of society, medium and long terms policy pronouncements, making the people feel the impact of government, and financial prudence. On appointments, the governor has sought out politicians who have contributed to PDP electoral victory in the state. He has also catered to the interest of powerful stakeholders who stood resolutely by him in the tough days of campaigning and when some erstwhile party stalwarts exited the PDP when it seemed that they were most needed. He has also brought in young and new faces into the administration as commissioners. The youths are the fulcrum of any country, especially in the labour force. Bringing them early into administration is a way of sowing seeds for the future. He has added persons from other age brackets to guarantee a well-nuanced mix.

The process of appointments has been deliberate, measured, and calculated to achieve maximum effect and satisfaction. For example, State Commissioners were appointed only after the federal executive council had been constituted though his list of appointees was ready before then. It is certain that not all politicians will be happy. The positions available are not enough to please everyone in the political class. Not even the federal government has been able to achieve this. But this is where elected and appointed officials should help the administration by carrying all stakeholders in the polity along.

At the end of one hundred days, Governor Oborevwori commissioned projects in the state. Most of the projects were started by his predecessor in office. Oborevwori explains that government is a continuum, and it therefore makes sense to finish up projects which the administration which he was part had started. For example, multi-billion-naira projects were inaugurated at the Dennis Osadebey University Anwai-Asaba, 29 network of roads with 31.45 line drains around Madonna College road in Asaba and Okpanam areas of Oshimili South and Oshimili North Local Government Council areas of the state. The governor has promised to commission the Ughelli-Asaba dualized road project as soon as possible.

The civil service is crucial to the success of any administration, being the engine room of government bureaucracy. This class of people need to be kept happy through sound policies and a healthy welfare package. As a listening leader, the governor dived straight into one of the challenges of civil servants by approving palliatives for them. Apart from ten thousand naira added to their monthly salaries to subsidize their transportation, the governor also approved days off and days on duty for civil servants. That way, workers do not come to the office daily. The cost of commuting from one point to the other is enormous to the ordinary worker whose take-home pay is usually not enough to take them home!

Governor Oborevwori’s latest act of inviting widely known construction giant Julius Berger to tackle infrastructure deficit in Warri has thrilled Deltans who had always expressed dissatisfaction with the state of roads in that ancient city of oil! This is a bold move. Enerhen Junction and indeed PTI junction are begging for attention. A statement of possible new approach to road construction. In one of our post-election chats, Governor-elect had assured all that he would intervene massively in Warri and in any other parts of the state that require government intervention. Indeed, at his inauguration ceremony at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, the rapturous reaction that followed his declaration that he would work massively on Warri is an indication of how the people feel. Although the Abraka-Agbor and Sapele-Benin roads are federal, these roads impact the lives of Deltans. It would be great if the Oborevwori administration could enter a deal with the Minister of Works to enable the state government to stop the nightmare that the roads have become.

Certainly, there is a lot of work to be done in the state. The menace of Fulani herdsmen is still felt in some parts of the state. The state government is working in consonance with federal security agencies to curb their menace. The scoundrel herdsmen around Jesse and Uwheru must be dealt with decisively. Managing divergent viewpoints and a multiethnic state is not a tea party. In this Oborevwori has done well.

In commending Oborevwori for ‘sheriffying’ Delta State by promising to do and doing more than what was done in the past, it is apposite to say that it is morning yet on creation day. It is hoped that there will be foreign direct investments, that the youths would be given adequate attention, especially the ones who seem to have made internet fraud and money ritual their career. Education has been given a boost by the establishment of more universities so that any Deltan who is qualified will not be denied space to pursue their dreams. By commissioning the facilities in the university in Anwai, the governor has sent a strong message to the youth in the state and beyond: SCHOOL NO BE SCAM!
