Access to quality education top priority in Delta – Oborevwori

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, says his administration was working assiduously to ensure that every child in the state have access to complete and functional education comparable to any part of the world.

Governor Oborevwori disclosed this, Thursday, during the inauguration of multiple projects at the Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area of the State.

The projects inaugurated as part of activities lined up to celebrate his administration’s first 100 days in office include; Administrative building; Vice-Chancellor’s Lodge; Staff School building; University Guest House/squash court, and two kilometres of interlock/concrete Road in the University.

He commended the University management for the many projects executed through internally generated revenue, assuring that his administration would continue to invest in the upgrade of educational infrastructure in the state for a conducive learning climate.

While commending the immediate past administration of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for establishing the three new universities, Governor Oborevwori challenged universities to engage in research to solve plethora of challenges confronting the world.

The Governor said: “The goal of this administration is to ensure that every child has access to a complete and functional education. Within the limits of available resources, we shall not relent to fill whatever gaps that exist in the physical appearance of our educational institutions.

“There is also a compelling need to reevaluate and reform the software aspect of our educational system. In a global economy where the most valuable skill you can sell is your knowledge, the education we offer must be at par with global standards.

“To meet these standards and close achievement gaps, our educational institutions must continually innovate to enrich the curricula and the practice of teaching and learning for better outcomes. This is where policy makers, educators, teachers, administrators, and consultants come in.

“It is crucial for our universities to engage in ground breaking, cross-disciplinary research to address the complex challenges of an increasingly diverse and technological society.

“For our education to remain meaningful and impactful, it must also undertake research that helps society to develop, in real time, lasting solutions to the challenges of urban decay, potable water supply, alternative energy sources, public transport network, and waste treatment and management”.

At Okpolo-Enhwe, where he inaugurated the Phase 2 of Okpolo-Enhwe – Uwheru Road in Isoko South Local Government Area of the State, Oborevwori said notwithstanding the current financial challenges, his administration would continue to construct and rehabilitate roads and bridges in major metropolis and rural areas across the state to further improve urban-rural integration and boosting trade and commerce.

While commending the contractor for a job well done, the Governor appealed to other contractors handling projects for the Delta State Government to ensure timely and quality delivery, adding that he would “only inaugurate projects that are of the highest standard and quality because the people deserve the best.”

Commissioner for Works (Rural and Riverine Roads), Mr Charles Aniagwu said the road connects the Okpolo-Enhwe people and their Uwheru neighbours in Ughelli North Local Government Area and commended Governor Oborevwori for his commitment towards the project.

Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Nyerhovwo Tonukari said the University was founded with 45 academic programmes in six faculties, all duly approved by the National Universities Commission of Nigeria (NUC).

He said higher education was the most important precursor to industrialisation, adding that the Delta State University of Science and Technology vision includes; technological innovations, hands-on-skills training and ground breaking research directed towards socio-economic development.

Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Jacob Oboreh, said inauguration of the projects was a remarkable day for the young but potentially great institution.

He said the university had identified with the Governor’s M.O.R.E Agenda as a holistic roadmap for the advancement of the State.

Gov Oborevwori tasks architects to stop menace of building collapse

Delta State Governor, Rt Hon Sherif Oborevwori has tasked architects in the country to proffer solutions to the menace of building collapse across the nation with the view to putting an end to the incessant occurrence.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG0 reports Governor Oborevwori handed architects in the country this task in Asaba on Thursday at the opening ceremony of a two-day programme organised by the State chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA).

Speaking at the Archi-Delta Expo 2023, Oborevwori said everything would be done in the State to prevent cases of building collapse while imploring architects to rise to the occasion.

The Governor, represented by the Commissioner for Lands, Surveys and Urban Development, Chief Emamusi Obiodeh, tasked members of the NIA to critically examine the causes of building collapse in the country to avoid disturbing developments.

“Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, from the records, the Archi-Delta Expo is an annual event by the Nigerian Institute of Architects, Delta State chapter where it presents impactful lectures in the building industry, innovative products exhibition and presentation of awards to deserving individuals, consultants, infrastructural companies and government.

“I am particularly fascinated by the theme of this year’s Archi-Delta Expo 2023: ‘ Sustainable Development 111 is here again. This theme is not only apt but also very timely. It is particularly germane, because sustainable development cannot take place in an era where building collapse has unfortunately become the norm.

“It is worrisome and I would like a professional body like the NIA to seize the opportunity of a gathering like this, to critically examine the causes of such ugly events with a view to providing enduring solutions to end the unfortunate development,” he said.

Speaking further, the Governor said: “Here in Delta State, my administration is bent on protecting the tax payers’ money by completing all ongoing projects in addition to newly initiated ones in a bid to sustain developmental objectives in our well-articulated M.O.R. E agenda to improve on the infrastructural and human capital spheres.

“This administration has promised to continue from where the previous administration stopped in terms of infrastructural and human capital development as continuity and sustainability are key factors in development and this is the connection between the M.O.R.E agenda of this government and the theme of Nigerian Institute of Architects Archi-Delta Expo 2023”.

He affirmed his belief that the NIA and the Delta state Government have a shared vision toward sustainable development, adding; “And I look forward to collaboration and synergy between the NIA and the State Government”.

The Governor commended the NIA, Delta State chapter for the well organized programme and it’s far-reaching impact and benefits to the people and government of Delta State.

“Once again, I welcome the National President of the NIA and the Executive Council members to Asaba, the capital city of Delta State and I sincerely hope that you and your team will enjoy your stay here, because Asaba is home away from home”.

The Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), Delta State chapter, Architect Pius Amromanoh, had earlier welcomed all and sundry to the event.

The representative of the Governor later formally declared Archi-Delta Expo 2023 opened.

  • Sheriff, speed and 100th day – By Norbert Chiazor

Sheriff, speed and 100th day – By Norbert Chiazor

    By Norbert Chiazor

Predecessor, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa did not leave Delta in the hands of an irresponsible governor. That was my sigh when I met Governor Sheriff Oberevwori the other day.

Julius Berger is coming to Delta. A festival of project commissioning is blooming. Civil servants are flaunting their allowances. Delta is trending. M.O.R.E Agenda is making sense.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori marked his first 100 days in office on September 8, 2023, in the shadows of storied chronology. He is following an archetype.

Franklin D. Roosevelt became the 32nd president of the United States of America on March 4, 1933, with a pledge to govern with speed.

On the 100th day of Roosevelt’s presidency, June 12, 1933, he coined the term “first 100 days” as a threshold to gauge his success.

All presidents of America have followed the Roosevelt model to date. Nigerian presidents since Obasanjo had observed the convention. Governors and indeed all political leaders of significance commemorate it.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta state, in keeping with this tradition just marked 100 days of his gubernatorial sojourn, which began May 29, 2023.

As symbolic as 100 days may seem, the rhythm of governance is nowhere as easy as the sweet ballad of the nice ice cream seller.

“After Okowa Na Sheriff”. Yes! But the new Sheriff in town is on a marathon race, so energy-sapping, enervating.

Glory not the Big Heart. Forget about oil. Delta is not that smooth. This state is so rocky to rule. Complex in character, her place, people and politics are combustible.

The philosophy behind Roosevelt’s 100 days as a performance chronometer is faulty. Hasty hassle. Fleeting fight. Sound without much volume.

The 100 days benchmark of determining gain in governance is useless. Three months is too short, too fickle to fire development. Why observe 100 days? A participant observer is not persuaded.

In the complex maze of power politics in Nigeria, a 100-day period ticks off like a twinkle of an eye. Fading like the morning rose.

Nonetheless, counting Delta’s 100 days left one eager. Sheriff is shocking. Spunky on the saddle.

From the initial steps of clearing Warri drainages and provision of transformers to light up parts of the oil city in darkness for years, he moved to Asaba and Okpanam axis to commission 29 networks of roads and auditoriums of state-owned Dennis Osadebay University, Anwai.

Okowa built the best and biggest state secretariat ever in Nigeria for civil servants, Sheriff put money in their pockets at season of subsidy removal hardship, with the release of #5 billion promotion arrears to Delta workers.

Following in 100 days was the payment of #40 billion in pensions for local government retirees and approval for the employment of about 1,000 primary school teachers and other staff.

Mega interchange networks (flyovers) powered by construction giant, Julius Berger are soon to be mounted in the twin cities of Warri and Effurun.

A governor who promised Deltans M.O.R.E, a 4-point development and empowerment agenda had done more in 100 days.

Dr. Kingsley Emu, Secretary to the Delta State Government, facing a news conference, rolled out a slate of palliatives- #10,000 running for three months for public sector workers, and 17,000 bags of 50kg rice and maize across the 25 local government areas to cater for the ordinary people, widows and the vulnerable.

It has been a break-taking timeline inspecting and addressing projects across the three senatorial districts of Delta as Oborevwori forms and firms up his government in 100 days.

It is a pleasant surprise that the governor has committed energy to the completion and commissioning of projects initiated by his predecessor.

Political leaders across the country have often abandoned projects inherited based on a certain fear that the previous initiators would take the credit.

Only an incompetent, wicked administrator would jettison viable projects and programmes financed with huge public funds because he is not the author. That is the tragedy of Nigeria. A selfish sense of personal identity that rubbishes good governance and destroys social continuity. Okowa is right with Oborevwori!

Sheriff’s body language of continuum is not lack of will but latitude of wisdom. A good leader handles the past while building a great future.

Pronto. The Delta governor has so far kept a reasonable duty in the 100th day. Balance is Sheriff’s speed. Deltans are following him steady.

  • Oborevwori heads to Supreme Court to halt LP’s Ken Pela

Oborevwori heads to Supreme Court to halt LP’s Ken Pela

Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, has filed a Notice of Appeal at the Supreme Court against the judgment of the Court of Appeal, Abuja, which ordered the Delta State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal to hear, on merit, the petition filed by Ken Pela, the candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the last election, challenging his emergence as governor.

Oborevwori, in the Notice of Appeal filed by his lead counsel, Mr. Damian Dodo (SAN), listed three grounds upon which he would argue that the appellate court erred in making an order for a retrial in the Labour Party’s petition.

Recall that in a judgment delivered on August 31, a three-man panel of the Court of Appeal led by Justice M L Shuaibu faulted the decision of the tribunal to dismiss the case of the petitioners on claims that the petition was abandoned because the petitioners’ application for pre-hearing session was not properly filed.

Subsequently, the appellate court ordered that the petition be taken back to the tribunal for hearing within the time stipulated in the Electoral Act.

Oborevwori who is not satisfied with the decision of the Court of Appeal, has now filed a Notice of Appeal at the Supreme Court where he is seeking an order of the court allowing the appeal.

He also asked the court to set aside the judgment of the Appeal Court delivered on August 31, 2023, and affirmed the decision of the tribunal delivered on July 6, 2023.

In ground one of the Notice of Appeal, Oborevwori stated that “the lower court erred in law when, despite its findings that the respondents’ application for issuance of pre-hearing notice filed on May 19, 2023 was pre-mature, having been filed before the close of pleadings, and the respondents’ admission that the said application was indeed pre-mature, it proceeded to hold that the procedure adopted by the respondents, albeit wrong, did not matter as issues in contention had been brought to focus, and thereby occasioned a grave miscarriage of justice.”

While observing that Paragraph 18 of the First Schedule to the Electoral Act, 2022 requires a petitioner to apply for the issuance of Pre-Hearing Notice as in Form TF 007 within seven days after the filing and service of the petitioner’s reply or seven days after the filing and service of the respondent’s reply, whichever the case may be, the appellant pointed out that “pleadings” in the instant petition closed with the filing and service of the 1st and 2nd respondents’ reply to the appellants’ reply to the petition on June 9, 2023.

Prior to the close of pleadings, the 1st and 2nd respondents filed an Application for the Issuance of Pre-Hearing Notice on May 19, 2023.

“On June 5, 2023, when the petition came up for commencement of pre-trial, the 1st and 2nd respondents by their admission, informed the tribunal that the petition was not ripe for pre-hearing as they have only just been served with appellants’ reply to the petition.

In a bid to cure this defect, the 1st and 2nd respondents filed another application for Issuance of Pre-Hearing Notice on June 21, 2023, 13 days after the close of pleadings.

“The first and second respondents proceeded to orally withdraw their second Application for Issuance of Pre-Hearing Notice on June 24, 2023, while replying to the 2nd and third respondents’ motion on notice seeking the dismissal of the petition for being abandoned

The lower court, despite finding that the application for issuance of Pre-Hearing Notice as in Form TF001 was premature, proceeded to set aside the decision of the trial tribunal dismissing the petition.

“Paragraph 18 of the First Schedule is of a unique and sui generis nature, and its provisions are mandatory.

“Failure to comply with the rules as to the procedure therein is fatal to the fate of any petition”, Oborevwori stated.

Similarly, in ground two of the Notice of Appeal, the appellant argued that the lower court below erred in law when having held that pleadings will be deemed to have closed when all the respondents file their respective replies to the petition, it proceeded to allow the appeal, even though the 1st and 2nd respondents’ application was for issuance of Pre-Hearing Notice was pre-mature, having been filed before the close of pleadings

Oborevwori further submitted in ground three that the, “lower court erred in law when it failed to be bound by the latest decision of the apex court in Maku & Anor v. Sule & Ors (2019) LPELR- 58513 (SC); (2022) 3 NWLR (PT. 1817) 231 and proceeded to set aside the trial tribunal’s decision which had followed the said decision of this honourable court.”

In addition, he submitted that by the doctrine of stare decisis, the lower court ought to have followed the decision of the Supreme Court in determining the 1st and 2nd respondents’ appeal before it.

“The administration also helped to secure legislative approval for the local government councils to obtain a N40 billion bank loan to enable them to liquidate their backlog of pension liabilities.

“The government has also given the nod for the local government councils to recruit teaching and non-teaching staff to fill up existing vacancies.

“Oborevwori has also set up a committee in a prompt manner awaiting the impending flood. That is a governor who means business.

“That is why all Deltans are saying Oborrvwori has done well in his first 100 days in office and all these are pointers to signs of better things to come,” Ejoh said.

Delta PDP congratulates Oborevwori on his 100 days in office

Earlier, the Delta State PDP had warmly congratulated Oborevwori on the auspicious occasion of his 100 days in office.

The party described Oborevwori as the best man to take over and steer the wheels of leadership and administrative control of the State at a time like this.

The felicitations was contained in a congratulatory message issued by Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, State Publicity Secretary, Delta State PDP.

“When you took over the wheels of leadership and administrative control of Delta State, on May 29, 2023, after your resounding victory at the March 18, Gubernatorial election, we had no doubts whatsoever that your exemplary and illustrious performance as the longest serving and most successful Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, since the inception of this Democratic dispensation, will be brought to bear on your new and exciting calling to assume higher responsibility and elevation as the number one citizen, in the service of Deltans and Delta State.

“Our conviction was unshakable and unwavering and you have proved us right in just 100 days, with your sterling performance not only in the exhibition of political sagacity and brinkmanship, but also with the hands-on servant leader carriage and equanimity with which you have managed and promoted the affairs of the State, both at home and at the national level.

“In just 100 days, you have brought hope and succour to our Pensioners; you have put smiles of joy on the faces of our Workers and people, against the harsh realities of crunching hardship caused by the recklessly implemented fuel subsidy removal; you have given light to areas that were hitherto in prolonged darkness and ensured our youths have a huge sense of belonging, involvement and participation in the collective management and overall administration of the State.

“The M.O.R.E Agenda, which means Meaningful development; Opportunities for all; Realistic reforms and Enhanced peace and security, has been delivered with impartial equality across the three Senatorial zones and has carried every segment along and accommodated all Deltans, especially in the completion of outstanding infrastructural legacy and other befitting projects, which has underscored the truism that Government indeed is a seamless Continuum for the betterment of the people.

“In 100 days, your Excellency, you have proven to Deltans that the PDP did not make a mistake in unanimously electing you as our Governorship candidate and pairing you with our Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, as the perfect team to run on our joint ticket and deliver victory to our party.

“In 100 days, you have left no one in doubt that you are the best man to take over and steer the wheels of leadership and administrative control of State at a time like this and given the excellent strides which your administration has taken and the promising signs you have exhibited so far, you have instilled great optimism and conviction in the minds of one and all, that Deltans and Delta State will definitely enjoy MORE dividends of Democracy in the days, weeks, months and years ahead.

“Congratulations Your Excellency on your 100 days in office. You have made us proud and we can confidently beat our chest and proclaim in a very loud and joyous chorus, that better and MORE satisfying days are indeed coming for Delta State”.

  • 100 DAYS IN OFFICE: Gov Oborevwori identifies reasons why projects are abandoned in Nigeria

100 DAYS IN OFFICE: Gov Oborevwori identifies reasons why projects are abandoned in Nigeria

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, Thursday, inaugurated multi-billion naira projects at the Dennis Osadebe University, Anwai-Asaba, as part of activities to mark his first 100 days in office.

The Governor who also commissioned 29 networks of roads with 31.45 line drains around Madonna College road in Asaba and Okpanam areas of Oshimili South and Oshimili North Local Government Council areas of the state, blamed the abandonment of projects across the country on the failure or refusal of political leaders to continue with projects started by their predecessors.

The projects inaugurated at the Dennis Osadebay University, Anwai-Asaba, include; 500 and double 250 seater auditoriums, faculty building and furnishing of Faculty of Agriculture, Administrative building; Vice-Chancellors lodge; gate entrance and main entrance access road at the University.

Speaking separately during the inauguration of the projects, initiated by the previous administration at the University, Governor Oborevwori noted that government was a continuum and it was the duty of successive administrations to continue and complete projects initiated by their predecessors for the collective good of the people.

He commended his predecessors in the state for continuing with projects they met while also executing new projects and particularly lauded the immediate past administration of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for initiating the projects.

Oborevwori said: “My joy knows no bounds as we commission this 500-seater Auditorium, two 250-seater Auditorium, building and furnishing of the Faculty of Agriculture, administrative building, main gate building, and internal roads in this citadel of learning.

“There are two reasons for my happiness today, first is that I promised Deltans in my inaugural speech that I will ensure that all ongoing projects embarked upon by the previous administration would be completed alongside new initiatives.

“Government is a continuum and it is the duty of successive administrations to put the resources of the state to good use by ensuring that projects are completed in a timely and prudent manner”.

He explained that “One of the reasons for abandoned projects in our country is because of the failure or refusal of political leaders to continue with projects started by their predecessors.

“And this is usually informed by the fear that their predecessors will get the credit. However, this should not be the case if the focus of the leader is on the collective good of all.

“I am proud to say that in Delta State, we have had a history of successive governors building on the legacies of their predecessors. It is my honour and privilege to continue with that noble tradition as I give credit to the immediate past Governor of the state, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, for his vision and foresight in initiating these projects.”

While underscoring the importance of education to the growth, development and advancement of modern society, Governor Oborevwori assured that his administration would continue to give moral and institutional support for the development of the three new universities.

“The second reason for my joy is that the completion of these projects underscores our commitment to the educational advancement of our people.

“Education and knowledge are two cornerstones of progress in any modern society. The emplacement of skilled and professional competencies for all the citizens and residents of the state is one of the priorities of this administration.

“It is also gratifying to note that enrollment into the university has continued to grow. This is undeniable proof that the decision to establish this university and two others in Ozoro and Agbor is justified.

“Our people are eager for quality education and we are glad that we have provided more opportunities for them to actualize their dreams.

“This administration shall continue to give the necessary moral and institutional support necessary to transform these institutions to centres of excellence in terms of their overall outlook and scholarship potentials”, he said.

The elated Governor, challenged the University authority to prioritise curriculum development and innovation to make graduates meet up with challenging technological trends.

Governor Oborevwori said: “I implore the Governing Council and the Board of the university to prioritise curriculum development and innovation.

“In a time of rapid economic and technological change, the challenge is to develop courses and programmes that will enable the graduates to forge the strongest career paths, learn new skills, solve real world business problems, and develop the abilities and expertise to be in tune with global trends.

“This calls for hands-on and work-integrated learning as a direct response to the demand for professionals with market-relevant skills.

“Graduates from our universities must be well equipped with business knowledge and competencies in critical thinking, interpersonal skills, communication, ability to work in teams, entrepreneurial skills, as well as self, social, and ethical awareness”.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Nyerhovwo Tonukari commended the Governor for transforming a bush into a citadel of learning with seven faculties and 40 programmes to cater for the growing population of the state.

Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Benjamin Oghojafor in his welcome address, said the establishment of the three new Universities was born out of the need to grant more access to higher education for Deltans, adding that the university was already filling the gap by providing excellent skills in various areas of learning to curb the high rate of unemployment in the country.

He said the university’s academic programmes were one of the most sought after in the state, pointing out that they were in talks with the NUC to increase the school’s admission quota.

Earlier at the road and erosion control inauguration, Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze said that the completion of the project was a great relief to people of the area who had been plagued by massive flooding and erosion challenges.

Chairman Oshimili South Local Government Council, Dr Kelvin Ezenyili and his Oshimili North counterpart, Hon. Innocent Eseweze commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for consolidating on the achievements of the past administration in completing ongoing projects across the two local government areas.

They pledged the support and cooperation of the people of Oshimili South and North to the administration’s M.O.R.E Agenda.

The State Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, his deputy, Rt. Hon. Arthur Akpowowo, Secretary to the Government, Dr Kingsley Emu, Commissioners, traditional rulers and other top government functionaries attended the ceremonies.

Prior to his inauguration as Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori was perceived by a section of the populace as unfeeling, tough and one that could not be accessed easily. This twisted perception was played up by the opposition political parties who sought to make capital out of the mantra of street credibility credited to Oborevwori during the campaigns ahead of the 2023 gubernatorial election in the state.

Understandably, attempts were made, albeit glibly, to portray the then candidate Oborevwori as unsuitable for the leadership of the state, giving the diversity and multi-ethnic colouration of the people. “Why would you want to make someone who says he’s a street man governor?”, they asked.

Their perception seemed to have been bolstered when at a rally in Effurun in Uvwie Local Government, the then candidate openly declared: “I have street credibility!” From then on, the opposition, especially the All Progressives Congress (APC) tried to latch on the declaration in the vain belief that they would succeed in de-marketing him.

However, members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and majority of Deltans were not sold on the vile attempt to bring down a candidate with a mass appeal, who is God-fearing and openly associated with the people by declaring that he had street credibility. Definitely, it is the perception that Sheriff was one of their own that made him win overwhelmingly at the polls.

It is on record that PDP, with Oborevwori as its gubernatorial candidate thrashed APC, Labour Party (LP) and other political parties in the March 18, 2023 governorship poll conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). PDP won 21 out of 25 local governments in the state, while APC trailed a very distant second with only four councils.

But the Governor has adequately and rightly put cynics to shame since assuming office on May 29, 2023. His compassion and humanity has been etched on all parts of the state. And increasingly, the import of his street credibility is already making sense to a majority of the people.

Oborevwori Redeems Pledge To Warri Community

No soon after he took over the reins of office on May 29, 2023, Governor Oborevwori visited Warri South Local Government on an inspection of the multi billion naira storm water drainage project. It was meant to be an on-the-spot assessment of the project, with a view to avert flooding in the Warri/Uvwie axis and thereby ensure that the oil rich city returns to its glory days.

Expectedly, residents trooped out to catch a glimpse of their governor. In particular, residents of First Marine Gate came out in their droves. While showering encomiums on the state chief executive for a job well done, they told him of their plight and how they had lived in perennial darkness for years as a result of a faulty transformer.

Moved by the pleas of the people, the Governor instantly ordered that the faulty transformer be replaced, a pledge which was fulfilled within a week. A 500kva transformer was delivered on behalf of the government by Warri South Council Chairman, Dr. Michael Tidi.

Presenting the transformer to the community, Tidi urged the people to take ownership of the transformer and protect it from vandals. Represented by the Secretary to the Warri South Local Government, Mr. Joseph Oribioye, Tidi said that delivering the transformer to the community just one week after the approval by the Delta State Governor has shown that Governor Oborevwori is a promise keeper.

The council boss urged the people to remain peaceful and supportive of government programmes and policies, assuring that the Oborevwori administration was determined to do more for Deltans. “One week ago, Governor Oborevwori made a promise to you people that he was going to give you a brand new transformer. Today, to God be the glory, the transformer is here. This transformer is 500KVA, eleven lines, ABB product, the best in the world and it also comes with a two-year warranty.

Receiving the transformer, Chairman of the community, Mr. Omoefe Agaga, thanked the Governor for the kind gesture, promising to protect the transformer from vandals. A resident of the area, Mrs. Shola Onobokhua, who drew the attention of the Governor to the lack of a transformer during the inspection, could not hide her joy when she saw the transformer being mounted on the street.

“I cannot thank the Governor enough. For more two years now, we have been in darkness. So when I heard that the Governor was coming to our area, I gathered some of my friends and we made sure we told the governor our pains. God will continue to bless Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for us,” Mrs. Onobokhua said.

The visit to family of two-year-old killed by NDLEA officials

Thursday, July 13, 2023 was a sad day for the Omorhiakogbe family as news filtered that their two year old son, Ivan, had been killed by stray bullet from operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Okpanam, on the outskirts of Asaba, the state capital. Also worrisome was the report that Ivan’s younger sibling, Eronmosele was battling for life at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba as a result of the stray bullets that hit him.

Bothered by the unwholesome development, Governor Oborevwori, could not hold back his grief. He visited the family of two-year-old Ivan Omorhiakogbe at the hospital to commiserate with them and to assess, first hand, the medical condition of one year old Eronmosele hit in the left eye.

The Governor expressed condolences to the family on the unfortunate demise of Ivan and promised that all efforts would be made to bring the culprits to justice. He told them that the Police were already investigating the matter and would make their findings known to the general public at the conclusion of the inquiry.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Delta State, we extend our heartfelt sympathies to you and your family over the loss of your son, Ivan. We have great confidence in the Police, and as you know, they are conducting their investigation. They will not make the outcome public until they have completed their investigations. So rest assured that the culprits will be held accountable. I commiserate with your family for this loss, and I am happy that Eromonsele is recovering,” he said.

Oborevwori commended the medical personnel at the hospital for their proactive treatment of the younger sibling, assuring that the State Government would cover all the medical expenses related to the incident.

“Let me also express appreciation to the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba for the proactive action they have taken so far since the incident occured. I had earlier sent people here to find out what they are doing, and I am pleased that they were able to save Eromonsele’s life, and I believe he will recover fully. The State Government will cover the costs of the hospital treatment, so the family should not worry about the expenses”, he vowed.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP Wale Abass, who was in the governor’s entourage also assured Deltans and the family of the Command’s commitment to ensuring a thorough investigation into the matter.

In a briefing to the Governor earlier, the Head of the Ophthalmology Department at the hospital, Dr Ernest Ogbedo, stated that they had successfully covered the eye to prevent infections from entering, adding that further surgeries would be conducted on the eye.

“We have performed one surgery, but the child will require additional surgeries because there is an eye injury that the doctors have addressed and covered. We conducted an X-ray, and fortunately, there were no bullet fragments present. However, we will conduct further investigations to assess the extent of the injury. We have successfully covered the eye to prevent infections and other diseases,” Dr Ogbedo said.

    Empathy for Aladja/Ogbe-Ijoh Debacle

The recent escalation of hostilities between Aladja community in Udu Local Government and Ogbe-Ijoh in Warri South West Local Government may have come as a surprise to many. This was especially because it was not too long that both communities signed peace pact. The expectation, therefore, was that relative peace would be sustained for a while.

But the eruption of the protracted crisis saw an end to the anticipated peace in the affected areas. Security forces were immediately drafted to restore order. The State Government also swung into action to ensure that lasting peace was found, to pave way for meaningful development.

However, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori’s deployment of non-kinetic strategy must be commended, as it has given hope of more enduring peace between the warring communities. He directed the traditional institution to step in, leading to a rapproachment, quite unprecedented in recent times.

As a result, the Orodje of Okpe, His Royal Majesty, King Felix Mujakperuo, Chairman of the Delta State Council of Traditional Rulers, summoned monarchs from both Urhobo and Ijaw nations to his palace. The Ovie of Uvwie, Oborevwori’s second homeland after Okpe, HRM Abe 1, Chairman of Urhobo Traditional Rulers Council led other traditional rulers to the meeting. The Ijaw Traditional Rulers Council was led by its chairman, HRM Elder (Capt.) Joseph Timiyan, the Ebenanaowei of Ogulagha kingdom.

In arriving at a meaningful resolution, the royal fathers were guided by the Governor’s clear message to the communities that were up in arms: “No amount of land is worth dying for because when you fight and kill yourselves, the land will still remain”. Ultimately, it is hoped that lasting peace has been restored following the royal intervention as directed by the state’s number one citizen.

At every turn, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori’s humanity continues to shine for everyone to see. He has not made any pretences about his deep religious roots, which has earned him the title of an Elder in the church. His humanity and street credibility are two identifiable take aways from a man with outstanding accomplishments in other areas, including providing employment for Deltans at the state and local government levels and investment in social and physical infrastructure.

Definitely, a 100 days is a very short time for meaningful assessment. But, for a man who hit the ground running from first day in office, reasonable milestones can be identified within the period under review. For the Governor of Delta State, it is safe to say his morning has revealed how bright the rest of the day would be.

Delta connecting communities to stem rural-urban drift – Oborevwori

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Saturday, said the state government was connecting rural communities with roads and other infrastructure to check rural-urban migration.

Governor Oborevwori disclosed this during inspection of some completed and ongoing projects slated for inauguration to commemorate his administration’s 100 days in office.

The projects inspected included, 2.6km Okpolo-Enhwe/Uwheru Road with 4.5km side drains phase 2; 2.4km Ugolo-Okpe/Okorikpehre Road and the 4.42km Obi-Ibabu/Ibabu Road with 2km drain at Onicha-Ukwuani in Isoko South; Okpe and Ndokwa West Local Government Areas of the state.

Others include; Administrative Building; Vice Chancellor’s Lodge; Principal Staff Quarters; University Staff School and 2km Internal Road at the Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area of the State.

Representated by Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu, Governor Oborevwori, said road construction brings development to communities and assured that his administration would continue to inter-connect more communities across the state.

“Road construction brings a lot of developments to rural areas. When you hear that some part of the road, people don’t live there yet, you begin to understand that government is about development.

“What we have continued to do is to inter-connect communities that will stem the tide of rural-urban drift. Once you have good roads and schools, you can begin to have buildings and this place can become a city.

“China that you hear that about 50 or 60 percent of the communities live in cities, it doesn’t mean they relocated those living in the rural areas to the cities. All they did was bring development and infrastructure to rural areas and that’s exactly what we are doing,” he said.

At the University of Science and Technology Ozoro, Governor Oborevwori said the Administrative Building was an outstanding edifice with 42 offices; the Vice Chancellor’s section, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Senate Services as well as the Registrar’s section and their staff.

He commended the University management for the various projects executed through internally generated revenue, especially the 2km internal roads in the University.

“This edifice is completely funded by government, it is comparable anywhere in the world and it is part of the projects to be inaugurated in commemoration of the 100 days in office of this administration.

“We have also inspected about 2km length of road done by the University. You will recall that this same Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jacob Oboreh was the Rector when this place was a Polytechnic and he built the stadium; he has continued in that stead.

“We have been to the Vice Chancellor’s lodge, it is near completion. If we have better information in the next two weeks, then it will be part of what we will be commissioning.

“We also inspected the lodges of other principal officers; the Bursar, the Registrar and the Librarian. They are 95 percent complete.

“There are provisions in place for the maintenance of the structures. This Vice Chancellor is exceptional, he has built several infrastructure on his own and through his internally generated revenue; so we have no doubt that these buildings will be better maintained over time”.
