Gov Oborevwori blows hot, queries 2 civil servants

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has disclosed that he recently queried two civil servants for allegedly certifying  uncompleted projects and making payment to the contractors.

Oborevwori disclosed this on Sunday at the retirement thanksgiving service in honour of the outgone Permanent Secretary and Accountant-General, state Ministry of Finance, Mrs Joy Enwa.

The service was held at the Cathedral Church of St. Peter, Asaba.

The governor warned that his administration would not spare any government official found to have certified uncompleted or poorly executed projects for payment.

He said that it was his administration’s desire to ensure that the people got value for every project executed by the state government.

Oborevwori lauded the theme of the homily, “The Choice of a Good Name”, and admonished civil servants in the state to desist from actions that could jeopardise their careers.

“This message speaks loudly on what I have been doing in the past one week; the message is key to all our civil and public servants because a lot has been happening and I am happy for the choice of the topic.

“All that civil servants needed since I came into office I have done for them, what else do they need?

“After fuel subsidy removal, we paid them transport allowance for three months, we paid promotion arrears of over N5.6 billion and we were also the first to pronounce and pay the New National Minimum Wage.

“As I am standing here, I am very, very angry for what civil servants are doing. Two civil servants have been issued query for issuing certificates for jobs that have not been completed and payments made.

“I know the ethics. Next week, I will announce their names, and we will look at it, following due process. You know in this government, if you do well, space will be given to you to do more,” the governor said.

He congratulated Enwa on her achievements and growing through the ranks to the echelon of her career.

He said, “The calibre of people that have come today to honour her on retirement is a clear testament to the fact that she did well in service.”

In a sermon, the Bishop, Diocese of Asaba, Most Rev. Kingsley Obuh, charged everyone in a position of trust to embrace good name for posterity.

He congratulating Enwa on her successful retirement as Accountant-General of the State and Permanent Secretary in the civil service.

Obuh advised her to keep radiating the good traits that endeared her to all while in service.

He said a good name can be earned through honourable behaviour, godly wisdom, moral courage and personal integrity.

According to him, no position is permanent, hence the need to leave enviable legacies while in active service. He further advised Enwa to use the remaining years of her life for the service of God and humanity.

The bishop also commended the governor for his giant strides in all sectors and urged him to remain focused in pursuit of his M.O.R.E Agenda.

In Delta, it is the people first – Gov Oborevwori

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Friday, said all his actions as governor were guided by the interest of the people. He assured that no one would short change the state under his watch.

Governor Oborevwori disclosed this at the 50th birth anniversary thanksgiving of the Majority Leader of the Delta State House of Assembly, Engr Emeka Nwaobi, at St. Paul’s Catholic Cathedral, Issele-Uku, Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state.

While commending the celebrant on his empowerment programme for the people, Governor Oborevwori urged people in authority to always remember the widows and the other less- privileged persons in the society.

He said; “As people in authority, we must do what we will be remembered for; so, I am happy that you are empowering people from your constituency.

“We have so many people today who don’ ‘t want the progress of this state. What we are doing now some people are not happy because they feel we want to outshine them.

“But we will always do what the people want; for us, it is the people first, Delta first. All these positions are temporary; the thing you will be remembered for is the service you rendered and I am doing my own now.

“Like I told people, the state’s contractors, nobody is my friend because the people who voted me want the best from me.

“It is me they will ask not you as a contractor; so, some people may not be happy, but that is their business. At the end, I will be remembered for the good things that I achieved for them.”

Earlier in his homily, Rev Fr Mario Dibie congratulated Hon. Nwaobi on his exemplary service to the people, adding that leaders must learn to factor in the past, present and the future.

The celebrant, Hon. Nwaobi, thanked God for attaining the golden age and thanked Governor Oborevwori and his constituents for supporting him in his political career.

  • I won’t sacrifice quality jobs for friendship – Oborevwori

I won’t sacrifice quality jobs for friendship – Oborevwori

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Thursday, said his administration’s priority remains delivering quality projects aimed at giving value to the people, regardless of personal relationships.

Speaking during inspection of multiple projects in Asaba, the state capital, Governor Oborevwori emphasized that competence, integrity, and value for money was critical to his administration’s M.O.R.E Agenda.

The projects inspected include; Ogbeosonwe, Ogbeilo road, Ogbogonogo market storm drainage project and Ogbe-Ofu Road, Off Jarret Road, Cable Point, Asaba.

Others are; 1.7km Amaechi Agusi Street with 10 adjoining streets,

Dorah Allanah Street, Oluu Street, Burutu Drive, Off Infant Jesus Road, Odilison Junior Crescent, Agbogun Close, Ngozi Odiaka Avenue, Aloy Isomede Street, Ezeobi Ojukwu Street, and Ajudua Street, Okpanam, Aretha Table Water Street, Off NTA Road Asaba and Redeemer’s Street Asaba.

Governor Oborevwori said, “I was elected to serve the people of Delta, not to please a select few. Friendship cannot and will not take precedence over the quality of projects we provide for the people.

“Contractors in the state know that; I have always emphasized on the need for quality jobs but the people who are causing this problem are not the big companies, it is some of our indigenous contractors that are causing these problems.

“The problem we are having majorly are the indigenous contractors, if you don’t patronize them they will say you want to suffer them, they will blame you for not supporting the growth of indigenous contractors. We need to also patronize them but they should do well because some of them are not doing well and like I have said the ones that are not doing well, will be blacklisted.

“The interest today is the public interest because the interest of the people is more important than any other thing. Some of them are not too happy but it is important the majority of the people are happy with what we are doing now.

“We are not doing media show, what we are doing is real and those who know me very well know that I will not compromise. So if you want to be my friend do a good job, if you don’t want to be my friend then don’t do a good job and I will kick you out.

“Some people say that this kind of governor who is doing like EFCC, is good for the people. The masses voted for me and they appreciate what we are doing so I will not allow a few people to decide for us, I will not take that from them.”

On requests for upward review of projects, Oborevwori said rates had gone up, adding that he usually visits such projects to see the extent of work done before carrying out any upward review.

“We can only review jobs awarded 2022 and early part of 2023 before I assumed office. This is because when we came in the dollar was around N750 now dollar is about N1600. Materials have gone up and we also feel for them but most especially we want them to do good job.

“You can see most of the contractors have returned to sites, we are not going to spare anybody, do the right thing.”

Governor Oborevwori who spoke further, appealed to residents of Asaba to keep their environments clean and directed the State Commissioner for Environment, Chairman Waste Management Board and the Chairman Taskforce on Environment to ensure total compliance.

Delta govt unveils security trust fund consultants

Delta Government on Wednesday unveiled the State Security Trust Fund’s consultants with a charge to ensure prudence and integrity as they engage in funds raising to support security operatives in the state.

The Executive Secretary of the State Trust Fund, Mr Samuel Osasa, gave the charge, while introducing the two consultants; HideaPlus and North-South Consultants at a press briefing in Asaba.

He said that more consultants would be engaged going forward, adding that the  consultants have their catchment and coverage areas within the state.

The Executive Secretary said that the unveiling of the consultants was a directive from Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori to the Trust Fund to raise money to help all security operatives in the state to reduce criminal activities in line with his M.O.R.E Agenda.

Osasa, said that the unveiling had become necessary to sensitise the general public that government has engaged consultants to solicit for funds to assist security operatives, adding that government could not handle issues of security of lives and properties alone.

According to Osasa, the Trust Fund was established in 2013 by the Delta State House of Assembly but took effect in 2016 after the law was amended.

“We have been assisting security agencies over the years within the limits of our funds.

“However, on assumption of office, Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori has directed that the Trust Fund intensify efforts to raise money to help all security operatives in the state to reduce criminal activities in line with his M.O.R.E Agenda.

“So, in compliance with the directives, we are here to unveil and showcase the consultants who will do more to raise the funds, create awareness and as a vehicle to support the government in crime fighting,” he said.

Responding, the Managing Director, HideaPlus Consultant, Mr Tony Pemu, said that security remained everybody’s business and not that of government alone.

He said that they would reach out to corporate organisations and wealthy individuals to solicit funds to secure lives and properties in the state.

According to him, it is an assignment given to ensure the raising of funds to combat insecurity in the state.

While assuring of their resolve to deliver on the job, he lauded the partnership with the media to create the needed awareness and to help to achieve success.

Also, Mr Charles Omordia, Managing Director, North-South Consultant, said it was a privilege to partner the state government and the media to raise funds for the security operatives to fight crime in the state.

According to him, funding has been and remained the challenge of fighting crime in Nigeria.

He said that time has come to deploy an effective internet -based technologies in revenue generation to fund the security agencies.

“More businesses are springing up in the state and they need a secured environment  to function,” Omordia said.

  • I will sanction bad contractors – Gov Oborevwori

I will sanction bad contractors – Gov Oborevwori

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Tuesday, said he was out for bad contractors who execute shoddy jobs for the state.

He vowed severe sanctions for them and site engineers who okay shoddy jobs for payment.

Governor Oborevwori issued the warning shortly after inspecting the 6.5 kilometer Achalla-Ibusa Road being executed by the state government.

The Governor, who frowned at the poor quality drainage executed by the contractor handling the project, reiterated that his administration would not tolerate any shoddy job.

He disclosed that his decision to inspect the project stemmed from an unsatisfactory feedback he had received from individuals that he had previously sent to evaluate the project.

Governor Oborevwori noted that he will prioritize road inspection this year, adding that his goal remained to ensure that his administration constructs quality road projects worthy of commissioning.

“This year, we are starting with more of inspection. The work on Achalla-Ibusa Road is bad, very bad. I have told the Commissioner and the Director that we cannot accept the drainage.

“The poor drainage will not affect the stone basing and the asphalting of the road; so, the contractor can continue by taking advantage of the dry season.

“This will serve as a warning to other contractors. There is no contract work that l will not go and inspect. If you do a bad work, we will not pay you. Even if we paid you, the site engineer will be in trouble.

“This government will not tolerate a situation where site engineers connive with contractors to deliver sub-standard projects.

“If you want to please me or be my friend as a contractor, do a good job; if you don’t do a good job as a contractor, you can’t be my friend,” he said. He stressed that some of the contractors would be blacklisted for doing shoddy jobs

The Governor pointed out that his administration would not spend money on projects for which Deltans would not get value for the money spent.

“Starting this January, I have committed to personally inspect projects, not just in Asaba but across all 25 local government areas.

“Any contractor who fails to report to their site or delays the work will face contract revocation. We will re-assign such projects to those willing to deliver.

“Our terrain requires us to maximize the dry season for construction. Over the next four months, we aim to complete and commission significant number of projects.

“By the time we reach two years in office, we want to celebrate substantial progress across multiple sectors, including roads, health and education.

“Deltans have not seen projects yet; there is going to be a lot of projects coming. We are going to award more projects this year across all sectors,” the governor added.

Governor Oborevwori, who also inspected the recently completed 2-kilometer road leading to the 63 Brigade Barracks of the Nigerian Army in Aboh-Ogwashi, applauded the contractor for the speedy execution of the project contract for which, he said, was awarded three months ago.

“We awarded this project three months ago, and I am pleased to commend the contractor for doing an excellent job. This road will encourage further development, allowing the Army to proceed with building structures in the area,” he said.

Other projects inspected by the Governor included the gully erosion site along Okpanam-Ibusa bypass, the perimeter fence and road around Asaba International Airport as well as Kwekagbor Layout, opposite Summit Junction, Asaba.

  • Supposed decamping saga: Noise over nothing – By Olori Magege

Supposed decamping saga: Noise over nothing – By Olori Magege

    By Chief Olori Magege

It was 6.30 am Thursday 2nd January this year my phone rang and I woke up. It was Julius (not real name) my political associate from Delta North. He was in a hurry and hardly allowed for Season’s banter before he told me he was forwarding a message to my wall. I asked him who the author was and why.

‘From Fejiro Oliver’. ‘Fejiro who?’ I asked him incredulously, ‘that troublesome guy?’ ‘Forget his character’, he begged me. ‘Just read the story’.

Barely a minute later the message arrived. It was a so-called scoop about Governor Sheriff, begging President Tinubu, to allow him decamp to APC. Just as I read the ‘scoop’ another message came in. It was a transcript of what the Sheriff told the UPU during Urhobo Day Celebration. The governor had admonished Deltans to pray for the success of Tinubu,  because if Tinubu fails, he the governor would fail too.

Several other posts were forwarded to me by Julius. These dwelt on Senator Ned Nwoko who the post said was being forced out of PDP to APC because he lost out on the delegates’ structure in Delta North PDP.

I told Julius I really didn’t see the point he was making and that I would revert. I then contacted some Delta North bigwigs of PDP extraction.

It was an earful. Each and every one of the contacts strongly suspected that the story about the governor decamping to APC emanated from Ned Nwoko’s propaganda machinery. I asked why. They said the anger and malice has its root in the outcome of the delegates’ congress in which the senator lost out woefully in the battle and this has put his second tenure in the senate in serious jeopardy. The senator according to my contacts had been on a smear campaign against the governor. An instance was when he lied against the governor about the Ndokwa power plant.

So I reverted to Julius and I asked him point blank if he was in Ned Nwoko’s camp. Yes he is. I can now understand why he sent those posts to me.

I can’t say I know much about Ned Nwoko beyond his activities in the senate and the tons of bills he is churning out in the upper chamber. He does have a very effective media team, no doubt, that ensure he dominates social media space with stories and photo ups.

Of particular amusement to me is his Anioma State creation bill. It is a still birth, a dead on arrival. I say this because the bill is not getting any traction in Delta North particularly among the political elites.

Delta state is one of the very few states in Nigeria enjoying unity of purpose among her people. Patriotism towards Delta among the diverse ethnic nationalities in the state is un-parallel. The unity among Deltans just didn’t happen. The founders and leaders across the state made it happen. They worked tirelessly to make it happen. The leaders took painful decisions, made great sacrifices destroying walls and building bridges to connect our people physically, mentally and spiritually. It took a lot of time and a river of sweats.

Today I can say Delta State is heterogeneously homogenous, our diversity strengthens our unity, our different colours have produced the beautiful rainbow. Delta is truly the Rainbow State.

So not a few are taken aback by this pet project of Ned Nwoko. Delta North has benefitted extra ordinarily from the Delta union. The facts are there, Anioma has suffered no marginalization in Delta state; so why divorce a working and harmonious marriage. It does not make any damn sense.

Suffice to say Anioma State creation is a pipe dream and a publicity stunt.

PDP has debunked the evil propaganda of decamping. But it does not require the debunking to even know that the rumour is from th pit of hell, because it does not make sense.

In PDP a first term sitting governor has the right of first choice. What this means is that the governor goes into the primary election un-opposed. This has been the tradition in PDP. Unless a governor’s performance in his duties is so abysmal, is so bad, his return ticket is never challenged.

And Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has performed exceedingly well in his job. You simply can’t find any fault in any aspect of his duties: is it in the infrastructural development or in human capital development? Is it in frugal management of resources or in health care provision? Is it in regular salary payment or in meeting contractual obligations on timely basis? Name it Governor Sheriff’s performance is outstanding; it has surpassed all expectations. And every Deltan is elated.

His party, PDP, is rock solid. There is no crisis in Delta PDP whatsoever. And the structure of the party is intact and is in the governor’s hands. So why will the governor be seeking to decamp to a comatose party? Why will the governor abandon a virile and vibrant party to associate with a losing party? To do what? The governor is coasting to victory come 2027.

The APC, as it is presently constituted, has no fighting juice in its vein. APC in Delta state is on life support in the intensive care unit. No one knows if it will survive the hospitalization. How can the governor, therefore, be afraid of such a comatose entity?

At UPU’s Urhobo Day where the governor was the special guest of honour the governor did call on Deltans to pray for the success of President Tinubu and rightly so. The Holy Bible called for prayers for heads of government, and for a reason. The president is the Sovereign from whom everything flows and it is foolhardy not to develop a harmonious relationship with him. Deltans did not vote Sheriff to go and fight Tinubu. That was not his mandate. Governor Sheriff knows that the tributary of a river that disrespects the source of its water will dry up. Ask Tinubu what was his experience as a governor in Lagos state when he was fighting President Obasanjo.

The funds Sheriff needs to achieve his lofty infrastructural goals for Delta lie in Aso Rock Villa. So he has to befriend Tinubu if the vault is to be opened for him. Yes he has to, indeed he must. And with no apology to anyone.

Governor Sheriff is not the only governor of Delta State to declare loyalty to a sitting president. Governor Okowa in his inaugural speech in May 29, 2015 declared openly his unalloyed loyalty to then President Buhari; and not a whimper emanated   from Ned Nwoko.

Distinguished Senator Nwoko is waiting in the exit hall of the Senate chambers. Come 2027 he will be packing home. Like humpity dumpity non of the king’s marabouts, soothsayers, odechi, native doctors and prayer warriors can save him.

Bon Voyage Distinguished Senator. In your next political reincarnation you will learn respect, and indeed show respect.

Chief Olori Magege writes from Orho Agbarho, Ughelli North, Delta State.

  • Aniagwu reels out Oborevwori’s achievements in 19months

Aniagwu reels out Oborevwori’s achievements in 19months

Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads and Public Information), Mr Charles Aniagwu, Monday, said Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was not interested in fighting any political battles but would steadfastly continue to reply to critics with massive projects delivery ahead of 2027.

Aniagwu, who was recently directed to oversee the State Information Ministry, spoke specifically on the state of affairs in the state at a press briefing in Asaba, the state capital.

Flanked by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon, and the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Public Enlightenment (Projects and Policies), Mr Olisa Ifeajika, the Commissioner said  Governor Oborevwori was not interested in any political fight but was primed to responding to critics with the delivery of many more viable projects.

“We have seen a whole lot of publications in different places, including those that are insinuating that he is leaving the PDP.

“Oborevwori is a very proud member of the Peoples Democratic Party. Today, Oborevwori is a clear leader amongst leaders of the party in Nigeria, and he is not in any way hungry to abandon the Peoples Democratic Party.”

Aniagwu remarked that Governor Oborevwori had kept faith with the continuation and completion of inherited projects, while also initiating new ones.

“Having continued with the numerous projects he inherited, he is currently advancing the state with completion of ongoing roads, while also initiating more projects.

He listed some of the inherited, ongoing and completed projects to include the Okpanam-Ibusa bypass; Beneku bridge; Asaba /Ughelli dual carriageway, particularly sector C1 and C2, Sector A and with repairs in Sector B as well as the 6-story High Court Complex in Asaba.

On initiating new projects, Aniagwu, said the Warri and Effurun skyline would never be the same again as Julius Berger was handling the laudable projects with three flyover bridges and road expansion works currently ongoing in the corridor.

According to him, “other roads have been completed within Asaba and the capital territory, while in Delta South a lot of roads in Warri, Isoko North and Isoko South have also been completed, while new ones have also been initiated.

“In Sapele and Okpe, a lot of road projects are ongoing, while some have been completed like the Ohorhor-Adagbrasa-Ugolo-Okuodiete road, Ezesi Road dualisation in Orerokpe and other internal roads in Sapele.

“In Delta North, Eweshi-Utagba-Uno and Ndemili-Utagba-Uno Road in Ndokwa West, Akumazi-Umuocha and Owere-Olubor roads have been completed, while the Issele-Azagba-Otulu road is currently ongoing.”

Aniagwu also said Governor Oborevwori had been building bridges of possibilities, connecting communities and giving room for both business interaction and for people to also have some form of interaction with their kiths and kins in their neighbouring local government areas.

“His business, at the moment, is governance and he is not going to lose sight of it.

“Because of side talks and because he believes that this is not the time to begin to play politics, what he is doing at the moment is to ensure that he keeps faith with all Deltans.

“He believes that every Deltan deserves the dividend of democracy and that is what he has concerned himself all about.

“I also recall that in one of our outings at the UPU celebration at Uvwiamuge-Agbarho, in Ughelli North Local Government Area, the Governor asked his kinsmen and Deltans to support the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“He was very clear when he noted that the support for Tinubu also is equal to support for him, that is not politicking; that is governance because, the times we are in now is not for politics but governance.”

In the Education sector, Aniagwu said the administration had established and operationalized a campus of the Southern Delta State University, at Orerokpe, as well as introduced a College of Health Sciences at the institution’s main campus in Ozoro.

He said the administration had also upgraded facilities in several general hospitals and over 150 primary healthcare centres and provided substantial funding to numerous Colleges of Nursing, Midwifery, and Health Technology, and established a College of Health Technology at Ovrode, which is now operational.

On the housing sector, the Commissioner said, “the administration has commenced the building of 50 housing units made up of 30 three bedrooms and 20 two bedrooms in Ozoro, Kwale and Owa-Oyibu as a pilot scheme, while eight units of duplex are also being constructed to accommodate more Commissioners in the quarters.

“As part of its efforts at diversifying the economy of the state, the administration has sealed a deal with UTM LNG for the harnessing of the huge reserves of natural gas in the state.

On fiscal discipline and efficient resource allocation, Aniagwu said “over N200 billion has been paid to liquidate the state’s debt stock while contractors are being mobilised with new jobs with outstanding job certificates paid as they fall due.”

He added, “just yesterday, the Governor drove round the entire city to identify many projects that require attention and I can assure you that he is also ready to revamp the state’s broadcast outfits in Asaba and Warri.

“As part of breathing a new lease of life on the stations, the Governor has directed that I submit a report on the stations within the three weeks.”

The governor gave the charge at a special Interdenominational Thanksgiving mass in commemoration of the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration held at the Emmanuel The Saviour Catholic Church, on Sunday in  Asaba.

Oborevwori, represented by his deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, said Nigerians emulate the  sacrifices and commitment of fallen heroes  and pursue the path of peace, unity, and justice.

He called on all to pray for global peace at this time, especially for the peaceful resolution of the Israel-Palestinian crisis  and the Russia-Ukraine war.

The governor said the thanksgiving service was part of activities lined up to commemorate the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, a day set aside to honour the nation’s fallen heroes and legionnaires.

  • 2025: We’ll scale up infrastructure devt in Delta – Oborevwori

2025: We’ll scale up infrastructure devt in Delta – Oborevwori

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Sunday, said the state would witness enhanced delivery of more infrastructure in 2025.

The Governor said he would embark on more inspection and inauguration of projects in the office in the new year.

Governor Oborevwori disclosed this during the inspection of projects within Asaba and the state capital territory.

Speaking at the proposed Asaba International Market, Governor Oborevwori said he decided to visit some of the projects to see things for himself.

He said: “We won’t just sit in the office and do just approvals; we need to look at some of these projects to see how they are performing.

“After service today, I decided to pay unscheduled visit to this Asaba International Market. Within this month, we are going to do the groundbreaking, but we have already authorised them to start the construction.

“We will come fully for the groundbreaking before the end of this month. It’s part of the facelift to the capital territory. We are going around the city, looking at the city to make sure the place is clean.

“Most of the roads are already due for overlay because most of them are old roads. You know, when you are using roads, you need to maintain them; in the Western world, you see them maintain their roads regularly.

“So, we will continue to maintain some of these roads and construct new ones and give the Asaba Capital Territory a new face.”

He said the market used to be the Abraka Market where criminals were taking advantage of the area before the state government relocated them to Oko.

According to him,”The State Government decided to relocate the market to Oko and we have made arrangements with Efab Properties Limited to develop this place.

“The state government is getting 20 percent because we are providing land and they are to build and allocate but we will get 20 percent from it and it’s something that we encourage.”

Governor Oborevwori also inspected the completed Gerald Onianwa Crescent, Odigwe Juwa Avenue, the storm drainage project under construction behind Asaba Specialist Hospital in Asaba, and other network of roads in Oshimili South Local Government Area.
