Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has expressed delight at visiting Ghana’s President-elect, His Excellency, John Dramani Mahama, ahead of his inauguration as President on Tuesday.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Governor Oborevwori joined a team of Governors from Nigeria to congratulate and rejoice with President-elect Mahama on Monday.

In a terse statement on his official Facebook page, following the visit, Oborevwori expressed confidence that the visit will enhance the bilateral relations between Nigeria and Ghana and also strengthen the ties between both countries.

“It was a privilege to pay a courtesy visit to the President-elect of Ghana, His Excellency, John Dramani Mahama, earlier today alongside my brother governors.

“This visit will enhance the bilateral relations between our states and, by extension, strengthen the ties between our beloved country, Nigeria and our sister nation, Ghana. Congratulations once again to the President-elect,” the Delta State Governor wrote.

Speaking while receiving the Governors, Mahama expressed optimism in working together to see how both countries can bring the already existing relationship even closer together.

“I always say Ghana and Nigeria are like twins from the same mother. So, we have to continue to work to bring ourselves as close as possible.

“We will not only fight over jollof and football. We will also fight to improve trade between our two countries.

“Luckily, I have a very good relationship with President Tinubu because I have known him since before I became Vice President. So, it is only natural that we can work together to make things work,” Mahama said.

    Oborevwori not leaving PDP- Spokesman

Chief Press Secretary to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, Sir Festus Ahon, Monday, described rumours of defection plans of the Governor to other party as untrue and concocted by some elements in the opposition in the State.

Ahon in a statement in Asaba, said some elements in the opposition party in the State were threatened by the rising acceptance and bridge-building efforts of the Governor across political divides.

According to him, Governor Oborevwori will continue to collaborate with the government at the centre for the overall benefit of Deltans and the country at large.

He said the Governor had no reason to defect to any other party given his wide acceptance in the PDP and followership by well meaning Deltans and residents, adding that he remained focused on delivering the MORE Agenda to all Deltans as promised during his electioneering campaigns.

He therefore urged Deltans to ignore the rumours making the rounds as it was the handiwork of mischief makers and fifth columnists.

A greater Delta will emerge in 2025 – Oborevwori

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has assured the people of the state of greater dividends of democracy in 2025, with a call for more prayers and support for his administration and the state.

He made the call in his New Year Message to the people in which he expressed gratitude to God for seeing Deltans and residents through 2024 and into 2025, remarking that last year was quite challenging for the state and the nation.

In the message contained in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, in Asaba, Oborevwori thanked Deltans for their continued support of his administration in the past 19 months and reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the state through massive investments in infrastructure and human capital development.

He urged the people to remain prayerful and trustful that God would do new things for them and the state in the new year.

Governor Oborevwori, said: “With profound gratitude to God Almighty, I welcome you all to a brand new year, 2025. I join you all in giving thanks to God for His guidance, protection and provisions all through 2024.

“I appreciate immensely the unalloyed support and cooperation that our administration has enjoyed from Deltans, which has been a source of encouragement and strength to the government.

“2024 was a very difficult year but we thank God for navigating us successfully into a new year with hope and enthusiasm.”

The governor added that his administration had, in the last nineteen months, kept faith with his promises to the people, within available resources.

“With dedication and gratitude to God, my administration has, in spite of fiscal and other challenges in 2024, completed and inaugurated numerous key projects across the state,” he said.

He called on Deltans to continue coexist peacefully with their neighbours in order to enhance peace and security ,which, according to him, was a major thrust of his administration’s MORE agenda.

His words: “My dear people of Delta, I thank you all for the peace that we enjoy in the state, because no meaningful development can take place in an atmosphere of acrimony.

“Let us, therefore, continue to live in peace with our neighbours so that government can channel resources at its disposal to the development of our communities.

“By the grace of God, 2025 promises to be a year of God’s blessings for the state and our people. It is my prayer that the Almighty God will meet every Deltan and Nigerian at the point of their needs.

“Be assured that we will continue, as always, to ensure that Delta remains secured just as the provision of social services and completion of ongoing critical infrastructure in all parts of the state will be accelerated in the new year.

“On behalf of my family and the government, I truly appreciate Deltans for the cooperation we received from them in the past 19 months. Deltans have truly been very wonderful and supportive and we thank you for your prayers.”

Oborevwori said: “As the path of the just is like a shining light that shines unto the perfect day, it is our prayer that, as we exit 2024 and enter 2025, the Lord will continue to perfect our ways with amazing blessings and testimonies.

“We pray that God will continue to provide us with the resources to impact positively on the lives of our people, particularly the youths who are struggling through the very difficult situations that we have in our nation today.

“We thank God for the peace in the state and we want to assure our youths that we will stay focused on our advancing Delta agenda by providing the needed infrastructure that will attract investors to our dear state and also increasing the pace of our entrepreneurial programmes to better the lives of our people.”

Governor Oborevwori extended his best wishes for a prosperous New Year, expressing confidence that with collective effort and God’s guidance, Delta State would experience greater blessings and development in 2025.

  • Our MORE Agenda impacting Deltans positively – Oborevwori

Our MORE Agenda impacting Deltans positively – Oborevwori

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Tuesday, said his administration’s MORE Agenda had started impacting positively on the lives of citizens of the state.

Governor Oborevwori disclosed this in his remarks at the opening ceremony of the 5th edition of the Delta State Communication Workshop with the theme: Advancing Delta: Strategies for Public Communication and Effective Media Engagement held in Asaba, the state capital.

Represented by the State Commissioner for Information, Dr Ifeanyi Osuoza, Governor Oborevwori challenged Government Spokespersons, Media appointees, Social Media Influencers and Media Partners to tackle propaganda and misinformation by showing Deltans the administration’s achievements.

According to him, “our projects, our accomplishments and our M.O.R.E Agenda is steadily impacting positively on the lives of Deltans and bringing the dividends of democracy to our people across the three Senatorial Districts of the state.

He said the three-day capacity building programme, designed to enhance the skills and overall efficiency of media appointees and partners in the current administration in the state, could not have come at a more auspicious time.

“The need to enhance the skills and overall efficiency of media appointees to the governor in the propagation, promotion and dissemination of the achievements, activities, policies, programmes and initiatives of our M.O.R.E Agenda, in its clearly defined components of Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms and Enhanced Peace and Security, cannot be over emphasized.

“Your engagement and responsibilities as media personnel and partners with the Delta State Government, would, therefore, become even more expansive and comprehensive as we continue to deliver the pragmatic and life- impacting dividends of the M.O.R.E Agenda to Deltans.

“You must all be fully prepared for that in recognition and fulfillment of your critical importance, roles and responsibilities as government media personnel and partners, operating in the dynamic social media sphere.”

He reiterated that one of the major communication policy thrusts of his administration was to consistently support the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as he “continues” to deliver the Renewed Hope Agenda for the betterment of Nigerians, including Deltans.

“Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the President of this country, is fully supporting our administration and it behoves on us, as Government media aides, partners and spokespersons, to ensure that our strategic communication engagements must reflect and support the President and reflect the policies, gains and advantages of the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“It is only by doing this with sincere commitment that we can attract comprehensive benefits and goodwill from the Federal Government for our people.

“It is also important to emphasize, here, too, that as Government Spokespersons, Media appointees, Social Media Influencers and Media Partners, it is also the communication policy of this administration that the best and sure way to respond to negative propaganda is to consistently present and promote our projects, initiatives and the verifiable, impactful achievements of the M.O.R.E Agenda, in order to counter their propaganda and shut them up decisively.”

He lauded the Workshop Coordinator and Director- General of the Delta State Orientation and Communication Bureau, Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, for sustaining this Communication workshop.

The Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu, said strategic communication was apt for any government, adding that the Oborevwori administration had embarked on the construction of 513 road projects across the state.

Dr Emu added that over 250,000 Deltans had been empowered by the State Government under the various result areas of the D-CARES programme.

On his part, the Commissioner for Works (Rural and Riverine Roads), Mr Charles Aniagwu, said Dr. Fred  Latimore Oghenesivbe had been consistent in promoting the state and had done it quite well during the previous administration and advised participants to give all their attention in order to benefit from the training.

The Chief Trainer at the workshop, Professor Abigail Ogwezzy-Ndisika of the University of Lagos, said the workshop was a celebration of commitment to advancing media and communications in Delta State, adding that effective communication remained the bedrock for transformative governance.

In his welcome remarks, the Director-General of the State Bureau of Orientations, Mr Fred Latimore, said the capacity training workshop started in 2019 during the administration of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for approving the 2024 workshop.

Oghenesivbe assured that modules had been designed purposely to equip the participants with knowledge to do their jobs effectively.

  • Gov Oborevwori focused on devt of Delta – Ahon

Gov Oborevwori focused on devt of Delta – Ahon

The Chief Press Secretary, CPS, to the Governor of Delta State, Sir Festus Ahon, Sunday, said Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was fully focusing on the governance and development of the state.

Ahon stated this in Asaba in reaction to a report credited to one of the Executive Assistants, New Media, to the Governor, Mr Felix Ofou, in response to former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege’s recent diatribe on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori at an APC event in Oghara, Ethiope West Local Government Area of the state.

The CPS, in the statement, frowned that a personal article written by Mr Felix Ofou was being mischievously and deliberately misinterpreted by a section of the media, adding that, contrary to perception, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori had a harmonious working relationship with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Ahon said, “the Governor has constantly urged Deltans and other Nigerians to continue to give support to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu”, stressing that “if the President fails”, he, as a governor, would have failed, too.”

He said this was the same view Governor Oborevwori lucidly expressed at the Urhobo Progress Union, UPU event on Saturday 7th December, at which event, he said, inter alia, “I want to appeal to Urhobo nation today, I am saying it here, I am an Urhobo man and am Governor of Delta State.

“But I will tell you today whether you like it or not, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is supporting this administration. God has made him the President as God has made me the Governor of Delta State.

“So, as you are supporting me, support him because if he fails, I will fail, but by the grace of God, he will not fail and I will not fail, too.

“Mr President has appointed our sons and daughters into various positions. He did not appoint people from outside the state. God has given him victory and God has given me victory; you people should support us to succeed”.

Ahon added, “it is, therefore, imperative to state categorically that, as Chief Press Secretary and official spokesman of the Governor of Delta State, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori did not, and has never, expressed such views on Mr President’s economic policies.

“The general public is, therefore, advised to jettison such misleading reports as they do not reflect the views of the Governor who is working very hard to provide good governance for Deltans and other residents of the state, despite the present economic challenges faced by the citizens”.

  • Tribalism: The gap between Oborevwori & Zik Gbemre – By Norbert Chiazor

Tribalism: The gap between Oborevwori & Zik Gbemre – By Norbert Chiazor

    By Norbert Chiazor

Why do Zik Gbemre delight in diatribe? I often ponder. At over 70, a man should walk in measured steps not brash bang on every table.

For readers at sea over Gbemre’s identity,he is a self styled critic with uncanny obsession for only one subject – Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

Occasionally,he rambles on other matters  both trivial and tedious but he draws his absurd  theatrics mostly on local politics of Delta.

This he deviously dramatizes on all kinds of  social media  platforms, with uncouth scandalous yet fictionalised sarcasm which no mainstream newspaper or traditional media would ever agree to publish for the risk of screaming libel.

His latest tirade, ridiculous as usual but not surprising is a Whatsapp/Facebook post where he went goofy, over communal issues, propagandizing highly divisive perspectives, capable of causing ethnic hatred among Deltans.

In the worst form of vile  misinformation  ever seen on social media ,Gbemre falsely  wrote that Governor Oborevwori “couldn’t admit  that innocent civilians died in the Okuama crisis”

At different fora,a  deeply concerned Oborevwori, known for his pacifist make up, had repeatedly acknowledged the tragedy of civilian and military casualties in the Okuama mayhem of March 14 ,2024.

His sincere  unbiased  condemnation of the violence by the  unhinged perpetrators had been widely reported.

That he  took  responsibility  to resettle the displaced citizens of Okuama with shelter and other vital material care speaks of a leader who deeply values peace and human dignity, in the face of conflict  and humanitarian crises.

A  different agenda is clearly at play  between a conceited  antagonist and conscientious protagonist.

While Oborevwori is daily dousing tension for public order ,Gbemre is  fanning fire upon Okuama.

His highly  inflammable invectives against the state government, military authorities cultural and community leaders are not only deepening the Okuama issue but expose him as a dangerous rabble rouser. All for  ephemeral vainglory so petty- to trend on Whatsapp and other social media handles.

Open, fair and reasonable, Oborevwori is obviously more Urhobo than Gbemre.

There is no charity in malevolent riot at  home.

Gbemre in his reckless faux pas also raised feeble alarm on Oborevwori for personally  presenting “Staff of Office to the Asagba of Asaba” while he  “delegated his Deputy” to perform  similar  assignment  to  Ovie of Agbarha-Warri.

This is the most nauseating bigotry displayed in recent  history within Delta.

Both Asagba of Asaba  and Ovie of Agbara-Warri are recognized kings of autonomous kingdoms.

Governor’s action is not a damper in the line of duty.

That he delegated his deputy for staff of office presentation to one, fulfilled all established constitutional conventions. He did not  err in law or moral realm. Chieftaincy is the purview of deputy governor.

The governor’s hand- over of staff of office to Asagba was simply honorific and symbolic.Asaba is the capital of Delta and seat of government.

    Numero uno Delta  soil .

This reality, hard core in immutability is beyond the crass tribalism of Gbemre, which throttles his bitter anti-Asaba/Delta North sentiments, in pitiable xenophobia.

But if he is  in doubt about the sacrosanct status of Asaba, he should read the constitution of Nigeria!

Oborevwori, with his honour to Asagba, acted well and wise – an administrative savvy, pro-social and culturally sensitive governor.

Incurable in his tribalistic spell, Gbemre also threw another reckless tantrum at the governor:

“He shunned all appeals to personally present Staff of Office to Ovie of Agbarha-Warri Kingdom, a critical opportunity to reaffirm Urhobo ownership rights to Warri Township”

At peace time, the Urhobos, Itsekiris and Izons are co-existing in Warri after the 1990s destructive ethnic conflict, it is absurdly unimaginable that Gbemre is  blowing a baleful divisive trumpet.

Does he want to become Ferdinand Nehimana, harbinger of hateful rhetoric who incited the 1994 Rwandan genocide? Or  Adolf Hitler of Nazi notoriety? While these posers are  hyperbolic for a parrot-mouthed ordinary civilian, this stunt no matter the motive is  condemnable, objectionable and  atrocious.

Happily,Oborevwori is not Gbemre. He will never listen to him.He cannot wear his blurred ethnic binoculars, which magnify  nothing but hate.

Delta North voted for Oborevwori because he is not a tribal leader. Delta Central supported him ,in spite of the betrayal of naysayers like Gbemre, because he is a good son of Urhobo land.Delta South backed him because he is accommodating.

Oborevwori pledged at his swearing ceremony at Asaba on May 29th 2023 that he would serve as Governor of all Deltans.

    He has not changed!

BREAKING BARRIERS: Oborevwori’s historic recognition by the Urhobo Nation

    By Festus Ahon

History was made last Saturday when the Urhobo nation gathered at the Urhobo Cultural Centre, Uvwiamuge, Agbarho, to induct Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, the Governor of Delta State, into the Urhobo Progress Union, UPU (Worldwide) Hall of Fame. This landmark event made him the first Governor of Urhobo extraction to receive this prestigious honour.

In addition, the Governor, caught by surprise, achieved another historic first by being honoured by the Urhobo Traditional Rulers’ Council, led by the revered Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom, HRM Emmanuel Sideso, Abe 1. At the ceremony, he was also honoured as the Omorotomo of Urhoboland (a worthy child). This marked the first time the Urhobo nation collectively organized a grand reception to celebrate one of their own.

His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Orowhedor Oborevwori, now holds the distinction of being the first Urhobo Governor to be decorated by his people in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments in the governance of Delta State, just eighteen months into his administration.

The importance of this honour can only be deeply appreciated when one understands that the UPU, the foremost socio- Cultural organization of the Urhobos worldwide, was celebrating its 93rd Urhobo National Day as one of the oldest and most prestigious Socio- Cultural Unions in Nigeria.

The Urhobo ethnic Nationality is the sixth largest in Nigeria and the most populous in Delta State, occupying eight local government areas in Delta Central and sharing two local government areas with the Ijaws and Itsekiris in Warri South and Patani Local Government Areas, respectively in Delta South.

The UPU, an embodiment of Urhobo culture and tradition, has branches all over the world and reserves its honours to only the most distinguished of its members.

The decoration and honour of Rt Hon Oborevwori by the UPU and the Council of Urhobo Traditional Rulers was not just for its funfare as Governor Oborevwori has made the Urhobo nation and Deltans at large proud in just about 18 months in office with a trail of achievements behind him.

The President -General of the UPU, Chief Ese Gam Owe, in his remarks at the event, commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for the massive infrastructural development across the state.

Owe said: “A time like this presents an opportunity for stock taking. But let us start with you. Your Excellency, we thank you for your MORE AGENDA. Today, our Urhobo Nation now breathes a new lease of life.

“The massive road construction projects, here and there, particularly the ongoing Julius Berger embarked Bridges and Roads expansion construction at Effurun and Warri, is a thing of joy to all discerning eyes. We are grateful to you, for these long-lasting legacies that you have brought forth to our dear Urhobo Nation.

“Apart from the above is the Delta State Health Insurance Scheme that is in place, courtesy of Your Excellency’s Government.

“I understand that other areas of Delta State are equally filling the positive impact of this your Administration. I am told and I verily believe, that Government Workers now smile home before the end of each month as their salaries are paid promptly. We thank you for all of these.”

Governor Oborevwori in his remarks, thanked the Urhobo nation for the honours bestowed on him, adding that he would not take the honours, which he described as a show of love, for granted.

While saying he would not disappoint the Urhobo nation and all other Deltans at large, he solicited for more and continued support of the people for his administration.

The Governor said the theme of the celebration: “Repositioning the Urhobo Nation For More Prosperity” aligns with the MORE Agenda of his administration, which embodies policy priorities for sustainable social and economic development through accelerated infrastructural renewal, youth development and empowerment, and the promotion of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

He said: “I am happy to let you know that through the various platforms of the Delta Action (for) Resilience and Economic Stimulus (D-CARES) programme, a total of 203,204 persons have so far been empowered with business support packages.

“Another set of 5,426 persons received cash grants under the MORE Grant Scheme for petty traders, artisans, and female entrepreneurs, while 6,000 farmers were empowered with agricultural inputs to boost agricultural production in the state.

“We have also distributed fertilizer to farmers across the 25 Local Government Areas of the state in support of our drive to grow the family economy and ensure food security for our people.

“This is in addition to the expanded focus on Agriculture under the Result Area 2 – FADAMA (Food Security) of the D-CARES scheme, as well as the release of N1 billion counterpart funding for the Africa Union Development Agency, New Partnership for African Development (AUDA NEPAD), meant to empower 2,000 farmers for food production, livestock and aquaculture.

“We recently introduced the MORE Biz-Up programme to assist a minimum of 2,000 fledgling entrepreneurs who are finding it hard to cope under the harsh effects of the economy.”

Oborevwori thanked the people of Anioma, Ijaw, Isoko and Itsekiri nations for supporting his election and appealed to Urhobos to unite for the political and social economic development of the Urhobo nation and Delta State in general.

He said his administration had prioritised key infrastructure projects like Ayakoromo bridge and Trans-Warri Roads and bridges to fast-track their completion.

He urged the Urhobo nation to continue to function as one big, happy and united family, saying; “as individuals, we may have our political differences but we must, nevertheless, stand resolute in ensuring that the interest of our people, the state, and the nation comes first in all our actions and utterances.

“That is why, as Governor, I have maintained cordial relations with elected and appointed public officials of other political parties. I believe that we can disagree without being disagreeable, and learn to separate politics from governance.

“This attitude of tolerance, mutual understanding, and cooperation is imperative for peace and sustainable development.

“It is also my desire and earnest expectation that Urhobos in diaspora will channel their investments home to complement the efforts of the government to create jobs for our teeming youth population and drive inclusive economic growth.”

MORE Biz-Up: Oborevwori disburses grants to 2,000 MSMEs

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Thursday, disbursed financial grants to 2,000 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, MSMEs, in the state to grow their businesses and cushion the effects of the inclement economic realities in the country.

Speaking during the disbursement ceremony of the MORE Business Upscale Programme (MORE BIZ-UP) held at the Events Centre, Asaba, organised by Delta State Job and Wealth Creation Bureau, Governor Oborevwori said the gesture was designed to empower the entrepreneurs to cushion effects of the economic hardship in the country.

He said: “The MORE Business Upscale Programme, otherwise known as MORE Biz-Up, is one of the job creation programmes initiated in line with the MORE Agenda of my administration.

“As the name implies, MORE Biz-Up is aimed at providing stimulus in the form of financial grants to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises [MSMEs] in the state in order to grow their businesses and to cushion the effects of the harsh economic realities in our nation.

“Like other job creation programmes of the state government, such as the D-CARES, M.O.R.E Grant, M.O.R.E WESAP, among others, the programme is strategically planned and designed as a testament of my administration’s commitment to empower small businesses, fast-track economic growth and to foster development in the state.”

He charged the beneficiaries, to take the knowledge garnered from the M.O.R.E. Business School component of the programme to advance their businesses and leverage on networking amongst participants.

Governor Oborevwori, said: “Your success as entrepreneurs is crucial to the economic development of our state and which will further inspire other young entrepreneurs to follow in your footsteps.

“Therefore, I urge you to work hard to sustain your businesses. We shall continue to support your entrepreneurship journey. Out of a pool of over 10,000 applicants, you are blessed to be among the chosen.

“The 2,000 beneficiaries of the programme gathered here today are in two groups- 1,000 business owners drawn from a database of fresh applicants who have never benefitted from state government’s job creation and entrepreneurship programmes, and 1,000 past beneficiaries who were verified by the Directorate of Youth Monitoring and Mentoring.

“I expect you to make judicious use of the grant by applying it wisely and responsibly to your business. It is my earnest prayer that your businesses grow from strength to strength.”

Earlier, the State Chief Job and Wealth Creation Officer, Mr Ifeanyi Egwuyenga, said the strategy of the MORE Business Upscale Programme focuses on stimulating economic growth by equipping entrepreneurs with advanced business knowledge, and injecting financial stimulus in the form of grants into small businesses.

Egwuyenga said: “This new phase of grants under the MORE programme is a clear evidence of our government’s unwavering commitment to nurturing entrepreneurs. In turn, this drives economic growth and advances the ‘Advancing Delta’ mantra of the MORE Agenda”.

In their separate goodwill messages, Chairman of Artisans Association in the state, Ifeanyi Abanum, and the state ALGON Chairman and Chairman of Okpe Local Government, Hon. Isaiah Esiovwa, thanked Governor Oborevwori for the various empowerment programmes of his administration which, they said, had brought succour to Deltans.

The duo of Abanum and Esiovwa, therefore, urged beneficiaries of the MORE Bizup programme and other empowerment programmes of the state government to make judicious use of the facilities giving to them to strengthen their entrepreneurial drive so that they could contribute meaningfully to the development of the state.

Responding on behalf of beneficiaries, Mr. Meshack Okeoghene, thanked Governor Oborevwori for empowering them, adding that the state government’s gesture would serve as a catalyst that would stimulate the growth of their respective businesses.

  • Why we renamed Delta university in Ozoro – Gov Oborevwori

Why we renamed Delta university in Ozoro – Gov Oborevwori

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has opened up on why the State Government changed the name of University of Science and Technology, Ozoro to Southern Delta University, Ozoro.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Governor Oborevwori made the disclosure on Wednesday in Asaba while signing the Southern Delta University, Ozoro, Establishment Amendment Law 2024 and the State 2025 budget tagged “Budget of Fiscal Consolidation” into law.

According to the Governor, the change in name will enable the accreditation of more courses and increase the intake of students into the university.

He said: “Before now, with the name University of Science and Technology, we cannot accredit all courses. But now, assenting to the bill, the name is now Southern Delta University, Ozoro. The change in name will enable the accreditation of more courses and increase the intake of students into the university”.

While signing the budget tagged “Budget of Fiscal Consolidation” into law, Governor Oborevwori raised the prospects of enhanced overall development of the state and said the 2025 budget was geared towards consolidating on the many projects of his administration.

TNG reports the Delta State 2025 Appropriation Bill of N979,228,818,719 billion is made up of N630.461 billion as capital expenditure, while N349.767 billion is for recurrent expenditure.

Speaking, Oborevwori said: “It is with immense joy that I have assented to this law christened ‘Budget of Fiscal Consolidation’ 20 days after its presentation to the Delta State House of Assembly.

“My joy is also for its prompt passage after going through the necessary legislative procedures. The increase in capital and decrease in recurrent expenditure over the 2024 estimates also gives me joy.

“We are now imbibing the culture where our budgetary estimates meet global best practices. A prompt passage and assent to this bill allows us to conveniently implement projects during the 2025 dry season.

“The budget has been drafted in such a manner that it will impact positively in the promotion and preservation of public trust and our well being.

“This reaffirms our commitment in advancing Delta State through the prompt and qualitative service delivery as enshrined in our MORE Agenda.”

Other bills assented to are the Delta State Structures and Signage and Advertisement Bill 2024; Delta State Human Trafficking Prohibition Law 2024; Special Cases Court Amendment Law 2024 and the Delta State Protection of Persons with Disability Law 2023.

The Governor, while thanking the State Legislature for the speedy passage of the bills, assured Deltans of more infrastructural and human capital development in the 2025 fiscal year.

He added: “As the year 2024 winds up, let me express my appreciation for the support I have received from all arms of the Government. It is my sincere expectation that we will sustain this collaboration and synergy in 2025.

“I also want to appreciate Deltans for the love and support they have shown to this administration, for the peace we are enjoying and for the progress that we have achieved.

“For running this state for months without borrowing, it shows that we are very disciplined in our finances. We have been managing our resources very well and we are not going to borrow for now.

“What we have as a reserve can withstand any economic shock. We are very confident as a state and we are paying contractors and even mobilizing them.

“We are doing that to encourage the contractors to have speed in their works because we are not too stable economically. We don’t know how it will be tomorrow and I want to assure Deltans that we will continue to move Delta State forward.”

Presenting the Appropriation Bill, Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, said that the Bill was presented to the House on November 14 and passed on November 26 after passing through all legislative processes.

The Speaker said the House took cognisance of some objectives that underlined the 2025 Appropriation Bill which included the completion of ongoing projects and the addition of new projects; expansion of the revenue base; enhancing transparency and accountability in public expenditure management; and initiatives to cushion the economic challenges confronting the people.
