Panic as soldiers, shiites clash In Abuja

Members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) and operatives of the Nigerian army on Friday clashed  at the popular Banex Plaza in Abuja, resulting in a gun battle that left many residents in fear.

The violence, TheNewsGuru understands took place during a procession to commemorate the International Qudus Day in Abuja.

According to an eyewitness, the members held banners as they marched through Aminu Kano Crescent in the Wuse district of Abuja.

“They (Shiites) were marching through Banex, all of a sudden we started hearing gunshots near the Eterna filling station. Turns out the protesters were exchanging gunfire with the soldiers.”

A memo issued by the Office of the National Security Adviser to all security agencies in the FCT and Nasarawa state, urging them to closely monitor the activities of the sect.

The memo read, “Available information revealed that the outlawed Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) has scheduled Friday, 28 March 2025 for a procession in Nasarawa State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, to commemorate the International Qudus Day.

“The procession is aimed at showing solidarity with Palestinians and to discredit the Nigerian Government. To this end, members of the sect from Bauchi, Taraba, Adamawa, Gombe and Plateau States have started arriving at the sect’s camp at Rugan Juli, Karu ahead of the procession in FCT.

“Given the violent disposition of Sheikh Ibrahim Al-Zakzaky led IMN, indications are that elements of the group may exploit the mass procession to protest against USA and Israel interests across northern States, notably Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Niger, Bauchi, Gombe, Nasarawa, Yobe, Adamawa, Sokoto and the FCT.

“Against this backdrop, it is imperative to closely monitor activities of IMN elements across the Northern States and FCT given the group’s violent antecedents. It is also necessary to ensure adequate security around the USA and Israeli Embassies in Lagos and Abuja, as well as key assets belonging to their nationals across the country.

“Furthermore, it is expedient to ensure adequate security deployment before, during and after the planned procession across the highlighted cities to preempt possible eruption of violent protest against USA and Israel. In view of the foregoing, I am directed to most respectfully request you note the development for necessary action.”

How police killed, took 4 corpses of our members – Shi’ites

Members of the proscribed Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), better known as Shiites, have accused the police of killing four of their members and taking their corpses away during last Sunday’s clash in Abuja.

TNG had reported that two policemen were killed in the clash as the Shiites were processing to mourn the assassination of Sayyed Hussain, a grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Three other policemen were injured in the clash as disclosed by the FCT Police Command’s spokeswoman, SP Josephine Adeh.

    But reacting to the incident
, IMN’s Secretary of Academic Forum, Ibrahim Abdullahi Musa, who denied the allegation of killing the police, said that three of their members were killed at the Wuse Market area, while the fourth person was killed in the Mabushi axis.

He said, “The police were well aware about the procession, as the police commissioner of the FCT command contacted one of our lawyers who informed him about the locations where the procession would start and wound up. He said the information was necessary in order to give us a security cover, but what happened was contrary, as they opened fire towards the protesters (sic) who were not holding anything apart from placards.”

He further said that about 14 other members sustained gun injuries and were being treated by the group at a location, in addition to those arrested by the police with various degrees of injury.

He noted that the police did the same thing in 2019; took six corpses of their members, who according to him, were released about three months ago following a court order.

The Nigeria Police Force said it has detained 97 members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), known as the Shi’ite group, for prosecution, following the clash with the group in Abuja on Sunday. The clash resulted in the death of two policemen and three sustaining serious injuries. Three patrol vehicles were set ablaze by the Shiites during the clash.

The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said this in a statement on Monday in Abuja, said credible intelligence reports helped the police operatives to apprehend  the detained suspects. He said the Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Kayode Egbetokun’s directive on the matter would be carried out to the latter.

Adejobi said the I-G had reaffirmed the force’s determination to arrest other persons involved in the attack and bring them to justice, The police spokesman quoted the I-G as saying he would resist all sorts of anarchy and unrest in any part of the country, and  pledged to continue to maintain law and order in all parts of the country.

According to him, the unprovoked killings of police officers in the line of duty are highly outrageous and unacceptable as those who murdered these policemen have murdered peace.

“As investigations unfold, the Nigeria Police Force is determined to uncover the full extent of this attack and prevent future occurrences of such violence against police officers,” he said.

Adejobi said the inspector-general sympathised with the grieving families of the fallen police officers and wished those currently undergoing treatment speedy recovery. He called on the public to support and understand the Nigeria Police Force in its quest to maintain law and order even in the face of extremist threats and other violent crimes.

UPDATE: Court orders immediate release of El-Zakzaky, wife

A Kaduna High Court has ordered the immediate release of the leader of the proscribed Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenat.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports El-Zakzaky and Zeenat were discharged and acquitted by the Kaduna High Court on Wednesday.

The Kaduna State Government had charged them both with an eight-count charge.

The charge borders on alleged culpable homicide, unlawful assembly and disruption of public peace, among other charges.

El-Zakzaky and wife, were brought to court on Wednesday by officials of the Nigerian Correctional service amidst tight security, pleaded not guilty to the charge, filling a no-case submission.

In a ruling that lasted over eight hours, the presiding Judge, Justice Gideon Kurada upheld the no-case submission filed by El-Zakzaky and his wife.

The Judge in his ruling held that the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against the defendants, who have been standing trial for four years.

The Nigerian Shiites leader and wife were thereafter discharged and acquitted with orders for their immediate release.

Their lead counsel and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr Femi Falana, had on July 1, argued that all the 15 witnesses presented by the prosecution counsel were unable to establish any connection between the alleged crimes and El-Zakzaky and his wife.

Falana then prayed the court to rule in favour of his clients and dismiss the charges levelled against them as there was no criminal case that has been established against them so far by the Kaduna State Government.
