Sanwo-Olu lists three things to do in reaction to mindless killings in Lekki

Following shooting of #EndSARS protesters in Lekki area of Lagos by soldiers, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has suspended all government activities for three days.

The governor also ordered the lowering of the flags in all government establishments for 3-days.

Sanwo-Olu further constituted a 5-man Fact-Finding Committee into the Rules of Engagement ordered and adopted by the Nigerian Army to be headed by a retired military officer not less than the rank of a General.

“The report will be presented to the President within 2-weeks,” he said.

BEING THE TEXT OF A STATE-WIDE BROADCAST BY MR. BABAJIDE OLUSOLA SANWO-OLU, LAGOS STATE GOVERNOR

    Dear Lagosians,

I address you today with a heavy heart, but not just as your elected Governor. I do so as a father and a brother. I do so as one who is touched by the infirmities and feelings of his people. I do so as a part of the collective humanity that we all share.

Yesterday’s events were no doubt some of the darkest gradients of our history as a State and as a people. As you are perhaps aware, I have been engaging the #EndSARS protesters since Monday 12 and Tuesday 13 October 2020 respectively.

I declared my affinity with their crusade against all forms of police brutalities. I took all of their #5for5 demands to President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) and the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu in Abuja. They were all acceded to.

Indeed, I could say we were making progress together though the pace was slow and indeed very slow due to lack of an acceptable leadership amongst the #EndSARS protesters.
However, events took a different turn from Sunday 18, October 2020 as criminal elements took advantage of the firm orders handed down to the officers and men of the Nigerian Police not to resort to shooting as a rule of engagement.

In Ogolonto area of Ikorodu, armed gangs unleashed mayhem on one another. While this was happening, other criminal elements joined in attacking innocent citizens who were returning from church services. There were reported cases of violent robbery of scores of citizens and rape of frightened women scampering for safety.

They are mothers, wives and sisters of our fellow citizens. Other criminal elements in turn began to unleash terror on citizens in different parts of the State like Fagba junction in Ogba and Ebute Metta. In the Ebute Metta incident, 19 officers and men of our Rapid Response Squad (RRS) were severally injured by armed thugs in Adekunle, Ebute Metta. The level of insecurity in different parts of the State became heightened with the multiple attacks on Police Stations.

The lawlessness blossomed into attacking and lynching of Police officers at Herbert Macaulay and Alapere areas of Lagos. Things took a more dangerous turn on Tuesday 20th, 2020 when the Orile and Ilasamaja Police Stations were razed by arsonists.

Chaos took over as Ajeromi Local Government Area offices were completely burnt down and wanton destruction of property followed. In the same Ajeromi, the Local Government Area, Ajegunle in particular, branches of financial institutions were looted and hoodlums attempted to gain access into the Tincan Island Ports.

As these were unfolding, with the help of respected civil society leaders and some concerned parents, we intensified our efforts as a government to persuade the leading lights of the #EndSARS protests to suspend the protests in view of the rising insecurity in the State.

We made the case that their battle has been won. We additionally conceded that they could resume their peaceful protests in Lekki and Alausa once we had succeeded in taming the rising wave of insecurity in the State. To achieve that, we needed a blanket stoppage of all forms of protests so as to make it difficult for violent tendencies to creep into the midst of peaceful protesters.

Our governance of security strategy requires that we do not make a different rule for one group of protesters and another for others. Sadly, we did not succeed in persuading the group of protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate to agree to this.

Unfortunately, while many of the protesters in Alausa dispersed peacefully ahead of the start of the curfew, many of our youths at the Lekki Toll Gate insisted on continuing with the protests. Sadly, there was no leadership to appeal to as they had continually maintained that remaining leaderless was a strategy.

For clarity, it is imperative to explain that no sitting governor controls the rules of engagement of the army. I have nevertheless instructed an investigation into the ordered and the adopted rules of engagement employed by the officers and men of the Nigerian Army deployed to the Lekki Toll Gate yesterday.

This is with a view to taking this up with the high command of the Nigerian Army and seek the intervention of President Muhammadu Buhari in his capacity as the Commander-in-Chief to unravel the sequence of event that happened yesterday.

Fellow Lagosians, while we pray for swift recovery for the injured, we are comforted that no fatalities were recorded as widely circulated on the social media. The leadership of our Ministry of Health led by the Honourable Commissioner, Professor Akin Abayomi worked through the night with different hospitals in Lekki and environ to monitor and provide support for the injured protesters.

It is relevant to let you know that I have also personally visited the 10 patients at the General Hospital, the 11 at Reddington Hospital and the 4 at Vedic Hospital, with mild to moderate injuries as well as the 2 in intensive care. So far, 3 patients have been treated and discharged to reunite with their families.

However, in sensitivity with the mood of the nation at this time, I have directed the following:

    1. The immediate suspension of all State activities for 3-days except those connected with governance of security in the State and the management of the current issue.

    2. The lowering of the flags in all government establishments for 3-days.

    3. The constitution of a 5-man Fact-Finding Committee into the Rules of Engagement ordered and adopted by the Nigerian Army to be headed by a retired military officer not less than the rank of a General. The report will be presented to the President within 2-weeks.

Fellow Lagosians, this may seem like the darkest hour of our history as a people, our sun will rise again. From the present ashes of our mourning today, a bright morning shall emerge from the womb of time and we shall rise again.

From the lowest place where this incident has thrown us, we shall rise with wings like the Phoenix and regenerate ourselves with new strength for a brighter tomorrow.

As we walk this phase of our history, let us remain one resilient people under God, with absolute faith trusting that we shall indeed rise again. Where we are now is fate. I apologise for everything that happened.

    God Bless Lagos State
God Bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria

  • PDP reacts to alleged shooting between Buhari, Aisha’s aides in Aso Villa

Main opposition party, The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed dismay over alleged shooting and security breaches within the precincts of the Presidential villa.

It alleged the shooting followed a reported squabble among family members and officials of the Buhari Presidency.

In a statement by its spokesman, Kola Ologbodiyan, the party expressed deep worry the protracted spat between wife of the President Aisha and his aides degenerated into violent combats, raids and free use of firearms within the Presidential villa.

The party described as distressing report that members of the President’s family were at scene of the assault against one of President Buhari’s aides, during which the First Lady’s security details were alleged to have resorted to the use of firearms.

“Our party is disturbed by such ugly situation in the Buhari Presidency, which has already heightened apprehensions in the public space over the apparent failure of security architecture and central command system in the presidency leading to such reckless and irresponsible breaches.

“The chaotic situation in the Presidential villa only points to the failure by President Buhari to provide a leadership that can guarantee orderliness in governance and effectively ensure the security of our nation.

“The PDP notes that such leadership failure at the highest level has further exposed why our nation has been bedeviled by myriads of security and economic problems under President Buhari’s watch in the last five years.

“More worrisome is that the Buhari Presidency had failed to speak out on the frightening situation so as to reassure Nigerians and douse the tension in the polity; especially at this critical time when our nation is facing serious security challenges.

“The PDP therefore calls on President Buhari to take immediate steps to restore order in his Presidency and shield our security system from the division and power tussle among persons close to him.

“Our party also demands for an immediate inquest into the security breaches as well as the alleged violation of COVID-19 ban on inter-state travels by officials and relations of Mr. President, which was reported to be part of the immediate causes of latest disturbances in the Presidential villa.

“Furthermore, the PDP urges the National Assembly to save the nation by wading into the persistent infighting in the Buhari Presidency especially as those in charge of the Presidential villa have not demonstrated the required capacity to engender the needed orderliness for productive governance,” it stated.

  • Abuja resident petitions I-G, AGF over alleged shooting, demands NIbn compensation

An artisan and resident of Kuje in Abuja, Mr Sati Danshetu, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police over an alleged shooting and breaching of his fundamental rights by police during lockdown in Abuja.

He alleged that he was shot and abandoned by the police on his way to buy food at a local outlet in Kuje, Abuja, on Sunday, April 5.

Danshetu, in separate petitions to the Attorney General of the Federation and the Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission, also called for the arrest and prosecution of the culprits.

In the petition dated April 23 filed on his behalf by Mr David Ajaba, Lead Counsel, Honoris Lex Law Firm, Danshetu demanded for compensation of one billion naira to enable him to seek urgent medical attention.

The petition was titled: “Petition Against Causing Grievous Hurt, Attempted Homicide, Breach of Fundamental Rights and Demand for Compensation”.

It read in part: “our client is an indigene of Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory and a law abiding citizen of Nigeria.

“On Sunday April 5, our client went out to buy food at a local food outlet, when suddenly the area was overwhelmed by men and officers of the Nigeria Police Force, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Kuje Division.

“The police were discharging live ammunitions sporadically and in the process shot and abandoned our client in the pool of his own blood in a manner only typical of a horror movie.”

According to the petition, after protests by aggrieved villagers to the police station, the DPO only dumped Danshetu at the National Hospital without any financial commitment whatsoever.

“He is now under a sentence of death most cruelly passed on him by your men while the whole family relish in trauma of the incident.

“It is our considered view that this savage act violates section 35 of the Police Act and constitutes the offences of causing grievous hurt and attempted culpable homicide contrary to Sections 248 and 230 respectively of the Criminal Code Act.

“Upon this we firmly request that you use your good offices to immediately arrest and prosecute the culprits,” it stated.

It stated that failure or delay to do so spelt doom for many other Nigerians who would as a matter of necessity be driven out of their houses by hunger and the likes during the lockdown.

According to the petition, the act is further a breach of our client’s fundamental rights to dignity of the human person, personal liberty and freedom of movement enshrined in sections 34, 35 and 41 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

“We thus demand immediate compensation in the sum of one billion naira to enable our client seek urgent medical attention, which he most critically requires and also to support the miserable life occasioned by this barbaric act,” it stated.

It warned that if the demands were not immediately met, the solicitor would explore all legal avenues to seek redress in line with the instructions of the client.

  • Photo: Police arrest, parade officers involved in Lagos club shooting

Police officers involved in the shooting incident that occurred at Crest Inn Club, Oshodi, Lagos have been arrested as ordered by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu.

Police shooting on Friday Nov. 29 at the popular club at 28/30 Balogun Street, Oshodi led to death of one Maliki Mohammed ‘m’ 27 years old, while two other persons sustained injuries.

A press release signed by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, listed the Police Officers involved as “Inspector Orubu Olusola, Inspector Apalowo Ola, Inspector Kasai Sule, Sergeant Momoh Ogwuche and Sergeant Adoga Collins attached to Akinpelu Division.

They are under the supervision of DSP Oloko Wale, who is the Divisional Crime Officer and ASP Adamu Babajo, the Divisional Operations Officer.”

In their statement, the team said they were at the club in response to a complaint made by one Makinde Omowunmi Abibat ‘f’ of No 9 Olaore Street, Mafoluku, Oshodi at Akinpelu Police Station who claimed she had been assaulted in the Club.

The officers claimed they were attacked by some hoodlums while trying to make arrest, which necessitated their use of firearms.

“This, however, fell short of the provision of Force Order 237 which defined the circumstances in which a police officer will be justified to use his firearms and the use of force.

“The Police Officers involved are already facing internal disciplinary proceedings known as Orderly Room Trial at the Provost Department of the Command. If found guilty, they would be handed over to conventional Court for prosecution.

“Members of the Public will be updated on the outcome of the Orderly Room Trial.” The statement assured.

The released also informed that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO); Divisional Crime Officer (DCO); and the Divisional Operations Officer were issued official queries for lack of supervision.

  • 5 killed, 21 injured in Texas latest shooting

5 killed, 21 injured in Texas latest shooting

At least five persons have been killed in a mass shooting that left 21 victims injured in the US state of Texas on Saturday, police said.

“We have at least 21 victims, 21 shooting victims and at least five deceased at this point in time,” Odessa Police Chief Michael Gerke told reporters.

Three police officers were injured in the incident which began with a traffic stop, he said.

The suspect was shot dead in an exchange of fire with officers.

The shooting comes less than a month after a gunman killed 22 people in the Texas city of El Paso, close to 300 miles (480 kilometers) west of Odessa.

Police in Odessa had earlier reported that “a subject (possibly 2) is currently driving around Odessa shooting at random people.”

They added that “the suspect just hijacked a US mail carrier truck” and urged people to stay off the road and use extreme caution.

Some of the shots were fired on the Interstate 20 highway linking Odessa and Midland, where cars were left with bullet holes.

President Donald Trump tweeted that he had been briefed by Attorney General Bill Barr.

“FBI and Law Enforcement is fully engaged,” Trump said.

The Mayor of Midland,Jerry Morales confirmed the death of two persons, with 20 others injured.

Midland Police Department also confirmed one death: that of the ‘active shooter’ in an update posted on Facebook.

“It has been confirmed that the active shooter was shot and killed at the Cinergy in Odessa. There is no active shooter at this time. All agencies are investigating reports of possible suspects”, the Police said.

Morales said the shootings began shortly after 4 p.m. local time, with two or possibly three gunmen targeting motorists on Interstate 20 and Highway 191, which connects Midland to Odessa, Texas.

Odessa police said multiple people were shot by a gunman who at one point hijacked a mail truck and was “shooting at random people.”

Midland Memorial Hospital said it received six patients, three of whom are in critical condition, hospital officials said. The other three patients are in stable condition.

Midland and Odessa are in western Texas, about 20 miles apart.

The police in Midland earlier said on Facebook that they believed there were two gunmen in separate vehicles.

“One suspect is believed to be at the Cinergy in Midland and the other is believed to be driving on Loop 250 in Midland,” the police said. “The two vehicles in question are: gold/white small Toyota truck and a USPS Postal Van. Please stay away from these areas and stay indoors.”

The police in Odessa, about 20 miles away, said on Facebook that a gunman — or possibly two — was driving around “shooting at random people.”

“At this time there are multiple gunshot victims,” the police said. “Everyone is encouraged to get off the road and use extreme caution! All law enforcement is currently searching for the suspect and more information will be released as soon as it becomes available.”

The latest incident in Texas came after the mass shooting at an El Paso Walmart, where many victims were Hispanic.

In that case, officers arrested Patrick Crusius, 21, a white Texan, who told police that he was targeting “Mexicans,” according to an arrest warrant published by US media.

The tragedy in El Paso was committed on the basis of “racist” anti-Mexican rhetoric in a country that “has always been a land of opportunity for every newcomer,” Jesus Seade, Mexico’s foreign ministry undersecretary for North America, said during a memorial after that shooting.

Critics of Trump have accused him of stoking such hatred.

The shooting in El Paso came hours before a gunman in Dayton, Ohio killed nine people, reigniting calls for gun control in the United States where firearms were linked to nearly 40,000 deaths in 2017.

“We need to end this epidemic,” former Texas congressman Beto O’Rourke reacted on Twitter.

O’Rourke, a Democratic presidential hopeful, also expressed sympathy with “everyone in West Texas who has to endure this again.”

Local broadcaster RTV Utrecht quoted an eyewitness as saying he had seen a woman lying on the ground amid some kind of confrontation.

“Several men ran away from the scene,’’ the witness said.

However, further details of the incident have not yet been made public.

The Utrecht police said rthe October 21st Square, a tram station stop outside the city centre, had been cordoned off as emergency services were at the scene.

Early morning shooting leaves several people injured in Dutch city

Several people have been injured in a shooting in the Dutch city of Utrecht, police have said.

The shooting began at 10.45am local time (9.45am UK time) when a gunman opened fire in a tram at 24 Oktoberplain, a square outside the city centre.

According to news website AD, the gunman then fled the scene.

“Helicopters are at the scene and no arrests have been made.”

On the investigation, police tweeted: “In this we also take into account a possible terrorist motive.”

It is unclear how many people have been taken to hospital or the severity of their injuries.

Jimmy de Koster, who lives nearby, told RTV Utrecht that several shots had been fired and that he had seen a woman lying on the ground shouting: “I didn’t do anything”.

Mr De Koster said: “I came from my job when it happened.

“I am standing at the traffic lights on 24 October Square and I see a woman lying down, I think she is between 20 and 35.

  • Four killed in U.S. mall shooting

A deadly rampage in an American mall has left at least four persons dead, local media reports said Sunday.

The attack occurred during a video game competition at a shopping centre in Jacksonville, Florida, south of the United States.

Multiple media reports, including by the Associated Press, cited law enforcement officials as confirming four people were killed out of about a dozen people who were shot.

The attacker also took own life. It was not immediately clear whether all threats have been neutralised.

The attacker struck at the Jacksonville Landing complex while a qualifying game for Madden 19 Tournament was underway at the GLHF Game Bar, CompLexity Gaming, one of the gaming teams, posted on Twitter Sunday night.

Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville is said to be treating some of the wounded.

A spokesperson for Donald Trump said the president has been monitoring the situation, and all necessary support would be provided to victims and responders.

  • Twitter’s CEO battles President Trump over YouTube HQ shooting

Twitter’s CEO battles President Trump over YouTube HQ shooting

After shooting at YouTube headquarters left a man and two women injured with gunshot wounds, Twitter’s founder and chief executive officer Jack Dorsey has called out on President Donald Trump to other than praying, evolve policies to address incessant shootings in the United States.

Chaos erupted at the Google-owned video sharing platform offices in California on Tuesday when Nasim Aghdam, 39, opened fire on the unsuspecting victims, and killing herself in the process.

TheNewsGuru reports Police have since opened investigations into the motive behind the incident with several reports indicating Aghdam was angered her videos were not getting expected number of views due to YouTube’s filters.

After the White House confirmed monitoring the situation, President Trump took to his Twitter handle to express his “thoughts and prayers are with everybody involved”.

“Was just briefed on the shooting at YouTube’s HQ in San Bruno, California. Our thoughts and prayers are with everybody involved. Thank you to our phenomenal Law Enforcement Officers and First Responders that are currently on the scene,” he tweeted.

Not before long, Jack responded to the tweet, retweeting it and saying: “We can’t keep being reactive to this, thinking and praying it won’t happen again at our schools, jobs, or our community spots. It’s beyond time to evolve our policies. This is a simple and reasonable approach, and it won’t solve all, but it’s a good start:” while adding a url to March for Our Lives.

The Police in San Bruno, California, say there is no evidence yet that the attacker knew the victims, a 36-year-old man said to be in a critical condition, and two women aged 32 and 27.

    The suspect: Nasim Aghdam

Nasim Aghdam lived in San Diego in southern California.

Police have revealed few details about her but US media said she ran a number of channels and a website, posting videos on a variety of subjects including those highlighting animal cruelty. The channels have now been deleted.

Aghdam has been variously described as a vegan bodybuilder, artist and rapper.

In January 2017 she posted a video complaining that YouTube was filtering her content, leading to fewer views.

On her website she also ranted against YouTube, saying: “Videos of targeted users are filtered and merely relegated, so that people can hardly see their videos.”

She also quotes Adolf Hitler, saying: “Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it.”

She also wrote: “There is no equal growth opportunity on YouTube or any other video sharing site. Your channel will grow if they want [it] to!”

Aghdam’s father, Ismail, told local US media she was angry because YouTube had stopped paying her for videos.

Video posters can receive money from linked advertisements but the company can “de-monetise” channels for various reasons, taking adverts off. It is unclear if this happened with Aghdam’s material.

Her father said Aghdam had been reported missing on Monday after not answering calls for two days. Police later found her sleeping in her car in Mountain View, 25km (15 miles) south of the YouTube offices in San Bruno and reported this to her family, but they did not detain her.

Her father told police she might go to YouTube as she “hated the company”, local media said.

YouTube terminated her account following the shooting. Her Instagram and Facebook accounts have also been removed.

However, many Twitter users posted her Facebook video rant against YouTube:

    What happened in the attack

The suspect is reported to have approached an outdoor patio and dining area at the offices in San Bruno, near San Francisco, at about lunchtime on Tuesday and opened fire with a handgun.

San Bruno Police Chief Ed Barberini said officers arrived at the offices at 12:48 (19:48 GMT) local time to find a “chaotic scene”, with numerous people fleeing.

Images broadcast on local TV stations showed employees leaving with their hands raised. Other footage showed evacuees forming a queue before being individually frisked by police.

Police said officers had “encountered one victim with an apparent gunshot wound at the site and two additional gunshot victims that had fled to a neighbouring business”.

Inside the complex, officers then found a woman dead from a gunshot wound that was believed to be self-inflicted.

An employee at a nearby fast food restaurant told Fox station KTVU he had treated a young woman who suffered a bullet wound to the leg.

He said he had fashioned a makeshift tourniquet from a bungee cord as they waited for first responders.

Several YouTube employees tweeted about the attack as it was taking place.

Product manager Todd Sherman said people fled the building in panic as the shooting unfolded.

    https://twitter.com/tdd/status/981262640830754817

Another employee, Vadim Lavrusik, tweeted he was barricaded in a room with other staff. He later said he had been evacuated.

The three wounded were taken to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. Officials said the 32-year-old woman’s condition was serious and the 27-year-old’s condition was fair.

A fourth person was also taken to hospital with an ankle injury sustained while trying to escape, Mr Barberini said.

Some 1,700 people work at the YouTube HQ. The company is owned by Google and is the area’s biggest employer.

There had been earlier media reports that the man shot was Aghdam’s boyfriend, but police later said; “At this time there is no evidence that the shooter knew the victims of this shooting or that individuals were specifically targeted.”

Such “active shooter” incidents are overwhelmingly carried out by men – an FBI report found that out of 160 incidents between 2000-2013, only six of the people who opened fire were women.
