  • Police dismiss three officers for reckless shooting

The Lagos State Police Command have dismissed two Sergeants and a Corporal attached to Amukoko Division for reckless use of firearms.

Sergeants Saturday Osaseri (25759), Segun Okun (359075) and Corporal Adekunle Oluwarotimi (496833) were dismissed after an orderly room trial convicted of breaching the Nigeria Police’ rules of engagement.

According to police spokesman, Chike Oti, a Superintendent (SP), the dismissed Non-commissioned Officers (NCOs) committed the offence on January 11, at about 9:30pm at Ifelodun Street, Amukoko.

Oti said they disproportionately responded with bullets fired from their weapons at some youths alleged to have hurled stones, sticks and bottles at them.

He said the actions of the dismissed NCOs led to the death of one of the youths, while another was injured.

Oti said: “They were arrested, detained and tried immediately on the orders of the Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi. The guilty verdict was passed on them by the adjudicating officer who considered that the officers did not appreciate the situation critically and ought not to have applied maximum force on the unruly youths.

The officers would be charged to court next week, while a duplicate copy of the casefile would be sent to the Directorate of Public Prosecution( DPP) for legal advice.

Sequel to the above occurrence, the Commissioner of Police has directed all Area Commanders and DPOs in the state to warn their men against misapplication of force. He further warned that officers must abide by the Rules of Engagement (ROE) as stipulated in Force Order 237.”

  • Buhari condemns Las Vegas shooting, condoles with Trump

The Federal Government has commiserated with the U.S. Government over shootings that claimed scores of innocent lives at a country music concert in the Mandalay Bay Resort, Las Vegas, Nevada, on Oct. 1.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama in a statement by his Spokesperson Dr. Tope Elias-Fatile on Tuesday in Abuja described the Sunday shooting as ‘senseless’.

“This dastardly attack that led to the death of 59 persons and left 527 others injured has been reported as the deadliest shooting by a lone man in modern U.S. history.

“Truly, it was an act of evil. Nigeria commends the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and others for their swift intervention by curtailing the incident, which would have claimed more lives.

“Nigerian Government stands with the rest of the world in condemning, in the strongest terms, the killing of innocent people who have been deprived of their fundamental right to life.”

He reiterated government’s conviction that no cause could justify taking innocent lives.

He added that “the Federal Government commiserates with the families of the victims and prays that Almighty God grants them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

“The Nigerian government also prays for the quick recovery of the wounded.

“During this sober moment of tragedy and horror, Nigeria wishes to re-affirm its continued solidarity with the government and good people of the U.S.”

  • Las Vegas: Trump condemns shooting, calls it ‘an act of pure evil’

President Donald Trump on Monday called for the nation “to find unity and peace,” in the aftermath of one of the deadliest mass shootings in American history, declaring, “Our unity cannot be shattered by evil, our bonds cannot be broken by violence.”

Speaking somberly from the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House, Mr. Trump condemned the shooting as an “act of pure evil.” He said he would travel to Las Vegas on Wednesday to meet with families of the victims, law enforcement officials and others who responded to the fusillade of gunfire that rained down on a country music festival on Sunday night.

The president said nothing about the gunman or the circumstances of the attack. He instead saluted the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, expressed condolences to the victims, and offered prayers for the recovery of the hundreds wounded.

“We pray for the day when evil is banished, and the innocent are safe from hatred and from fear,” Mr. Trump said, speaking from a teleprompter.

Acknowledging the senselessness of the act, the president said the nation was understandably groping for meaning. But he urged people not to give in to despair. “Even the most terrible despair can be illuminated by a single ray of hope,” the president said.

“In moments of tragedy and horror, America comes together as one. And it always has,” Mr. Trump said. “We call upon the bonds that unite us, our faith, our family, and our shared values. We call upon the bonds of citizenship, the ties of community, and the comfort of our common humanity.”

Earlier Monday morning, Mr. Trump offered his “warmest condolences” in a Twitter post.

  • [UPDATED] Las Vegas Shooting: 50 killed, more than 200 wounded

A gunman has killed at least 50 people and wounded more than 200 on Monday after shooting near the Las Vegas Mandalay Bay hotel, police updated a press conference.

Police said they identified the gunman as Stephen Paddock, 64, a local resident, but had no information yet about his motive.

The death toll indicates the attack is the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

Sherriff Joe Lombardo said the main suspect started firing an automatic rifle from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel at 10:08 pm (0708 GMT) at a crowd of people watching an outdoor music festival during a performance by country singer Jason Aldean.

He said the shots continued for more than a minute, with hundreds of people taking cover and trying to escape the scene.

The perpetrator was shot and killed by police in the hotel room shortly afterwards, Lombardo added.

Though U.S. authorities believed the perpetrator was a “sole actor,” Lombardo said police were also searching for Mari Lou Danley, identified as an Asian woman who was with the suspect at the time of the attack.

Lombardo said many off-duty police officers attended the country music festival and that at least two had been killed in the incident.

He warned that the death toll may rise.

  • FRSC demands prosecution of Abia Speaker, wife, others over shooting of officials

Sequel to the recent shooting of some its officials, the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, on Tuesday called for the arrest and prosecution of those involved in the fracas.

The Public Education Officer and spokesman of the Corps, Bisi Kazeem, made the call while reacting to the reported dismissal of a police corporal, Iroh Orji, over the incident.

Mr. Orji, who was an orderly to the Speaker of Abia House of Assembly, allegedly pulled the trigger on the FRSC officials at their duty post on July 15.

The Abia State Commissioner of Police, Leye Oyebade, announced Mr. Orji’s dismissal from the Force on Monday, saying that he was found guilty of the offence during an orderly room trial.

Mr. Kazeem told newsmen in Abuja that the policeman’s dismissal was a welcomed development.

He, however, called for the criminal prosecution of Mr. Orji and others involved in the shooting, including the Speaker, his wife and an operative of the State Security Services, SSS.

He said “the corporal’s dismissal is a welcome development, which shows that the police have zero tolerance for acts of indiscipline and lawlessness among their men.

“But, we call on the police to institute criminal proceedings against him and others involved in the act of criminality against our men.

“We have made this demand in writing to the Director of DSS in Abia, who said he had made recommendation to headquarters for disciplinary action against the operative.

“The director said the recommendation had to be verified and approved by headquarters before action could be taken.’’

Mr. Kazeem said that FRSC had also written to the police command in the state seeking the arrest of the speaker, his wife and the driver of the vehicle involved in the incident.

The speaker, Chikwendu Kalu, is alleged to have ordered the shooting of the FRSC officials, but he has denied the allegation.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the incident occurred at Arungwa Junction (near Aba) on the Enugu-Port-Harcourt highway.

Mr. Kalu’s wife, Victoria, was said to be travelling to Aba when the FRSC men flagged down her vehicle and attempted to book her for seatbelt violation.

A heated argument ensued during which she allegedly pounced on the road safety officials with the help of a female SSS operative, who was travelling with her.

Witnesses said that the woman called her husband, who arrived at the scene and allegedly ordered his orderly to shoot the FRSC officials.

When the speaker visited the victims at the hospital the next day, he was said to have been denied access into the ward where the FRSC officials were receiving treatment.

One of the wounded officials said “I saw him at the scene. What if we had died, he would have come to see our corpses.”

But, the speaker blamed the incident on “over-zealousness’’ of the security officers involved.

“I strongly condemn any over-zealousness on the side of any security personnel, be it anyone, not to now talk of being the Police, FRSC, the Army and Department of State Services.

“I think I will be the last person to encourage it because it doesn’t augur well with state and the country at large,’’ he said.
