  • Police to quiz Burna Boy over Cubana night club shootings

Nigerian artiste Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu popularly known as Burna Boy has got questions to answer from the Nigeria police over shootings that occurred from security operatives attached to him at club cubana on Wednesday night.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that  Lagos State Police Commissioner’s Special Squad has detained five policemen attached to the singer for attempted murder following the shooting of fun seekers at Cubana night club.

The names of the shot persons are given as follows , Irebami Lawrence and another fun seeker identified simply as Tolu.

According to the police via  a tweet on Sunday, Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, noted that to ensure detailed investigation on the case, Burna Boy would have to be interrogated.

Adejobi was responding to a fan who stated that the incident had nothing to do with Burna Boy

The tweep, identified as Adeshina said, “This has nothing to do with Burna Boy. The duty of the police guard to Burna Boy is to protect his life. So sir, forget what some Burna haters said about him. Please carry out our investigation with due diligence sir.”

Responding, Adejobi said, “Exactly what we will do. But there is no way the police would want to have a detailed investigation without interrogating Burna Boy. No way.

“So the level of involvement of everyone in the incident will determine his punishment or otherwise. We should not preempt what the report will reveal.”

#EndSARS: ‘Who ordered the shootings at Lekki Toll Gate?’, Nigerians ask five months after incident

Young Nigerians have again taken to their social media accounts to demand answers to the perpetrators of the ugly incident at the Lekki Toll Gate five months after.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG recalls that protesters who were demanding an end to police brutality and good governance in the country had converged at the toll gate before being shot by armed security personnel on October 20, 2020.

Several are feared killed, while many others sustained gunshot wounds.

Following the incident, the National Economic Council (NEC) which Vice President Yemi Osinbajo chairs, had unanimously agreed to set up a judicial panel of inquiry to address the cases of victims of police brutality and compensate their families.

The panel was inaugurated by state governors across the country with members given a six-month period to function and forward its recommendations to the state governments.

However Nigerians seem not to be pleased that five months after the nation experienced what could be termed as a ‘Black Tuesday’, the authorities are yet to fish out the security operatives who shot at the innocent protesters.

In addition, they are demanding answers as to who ordered the shootings as well as the arraignment and prosecution of the military personnel.

TNG observed that as today, (Saturday, March, 2021) marks the five month remembrance of the incident, Nigerians in their thousands on social media (particularly Twitter) trended #LekkiMassacre demanding the fishing out and prosecution of those involved in the shooting of innocent protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate.

SAD! Eight killed in Georgia shootings

Eight people, six of whom were Asian women, were killed in shootings at three different spas in the US state of Georgia Tuesday, with a 21-year-old man in custody on suspicion of staging all three attacks, police said.

The shootings came with many Asian-Americans already on edge following a recent spike in hate crimes against the community, and triggered immediate fears that Asian-run businesses may have been deliberately targeted.

Four of the victims were killed at Young’s Asian Massage near Acworth, a suburb of Georgia’s capital city Atlanta, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Captain Jay Baker of the Cherokee County sheriff’s office told the paper the victims were two Asian women, a white woman, and a white man, while a Hispanic man was wounded.

The Atlanta police department separately confirmed that four women were found dead at two business establishments in northeast Atlanta, identified as the Gold Massage Spa and Aroma Therapy spa.

Police told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that all four Atlanta victims were Asian women.

South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reported the country’s foreign ministry had confirmed that four of the victims were of Korean descent.

Authorities have identified Robert Aaron Long as a suspect in all three shootings.

Based on the pattern of surveillance video from the shooting scenes, Atlanta police spokesman Sergeant John Chafee told AFP: “It is extremely likely our suspect is the same as Cherokee County’s, who is in custody.”

“We are working closely with them to confirm with certainty our cases are related,” he added.

Long was taken into custody after a “brief pursuit” about 150 miles (240 kilometers) from Atlanta, according to a statement by the Georgia Department of Safety on Facebook.

Describing the scene in northeast Atlanta, the city police department said: “Upon arrival, officers located three females deceased inside the location from apparent gunshot wounds.”

While on the scene, officers were advised of shots fired across the street, where they found a fourth female victim.

Adriana Mejia, niece of one of the victims, said the family was “devastated” after her uncle was shot and that they were praying for his recovery.

“We never know when we’re at the wrong place at the wrong time because this was so all of a sudden,” she said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation was assisting in the investigation, a spokesman told AFP.

    – ‘Marginalized minorities’ -The shootings come as reports of attacks against Asian-Americans, primarily elders, have spiked in recent months — fueled during the Covid-19 pandemic, activists believe, by talk of the “Chinese virus” by former president Donald Trump and others.

News of the shootings came just hours after the release of a report by the advocacy group Stop AAPI Hate suggested a marked increase in hate crimes against Asia-Americans — with women disproportionately affected.

In a tally of incidents reported to the group between March 2020 and February this year, almost 70 percent of Asian-American survey respondents said they had faced verbal harassment and just over one in 10 said they had experienced physical assault.

While racial motivation can be hard to establish, a study by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at CSU San Bernardino also found that reported anti-Asian hate crimes nearly tripled across 16 major US cities including New York and Los Angeles — even as overall hate crime fell seven percent.

Georgia is home to nearly 500,000 Asian residents, or just over four percent of its population, according to the Asian American Advocacy Fund.

The Democratic party in Georgia called Tuesday’s shooting spree “horrifying.”

“As details continue to emerge, this attack sadly follows the unacceptable pattern of violence against Asian Americans that has skyrocketed throughout this pandemic,” said Congresswoman Nikema Williams, who is also the state party’s chairwoman.

In an address to the nation last Thursday, President Joe Biden forcefully condemned what he called “vicious hate crimes against Asian-Americans who have been attacked, harassed, blamed and scapegoated.”

“It’s wrong. It’s un-American. And it must stop,” he said.

  • Lekki Shootings: CCTV captured Nigerian soldiers firing at unarmed protestors, Sanwo-Olu tells CNN [VIDEO]

Lekki Shootings: CCTV captured Nigerian soldiers firing at unarmed protestors, Sanwo-Olu tells CNN [VIDEO]

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has revealed that footage obtained from the CCTV cameras installed at the Lekki toll gate showed that indeed Nigerian soldiers were at the scene of the shooting of unarmed protesters.

Sanwo-Olu revealed this when he appeared on CNN’s “Connect the World with Becky Anderson programme” on Monday.

“From the footage that we could see, it seems to be…there would be men in military uniform, who should be Nigerian Army or something,” Sanwo-Olu said.

But when pressed further by Anderson, the governor said, “Yes, they were there. That’s what the footage shows.”

Asked further if he was committed to a full investigation into the shooting incident and if the soldiers involved would be held accountable, Governor Sanwo-Olu responded affirmatively but said only President Muhammadu Buhari could ensure the soldiers were punished in his capacity as the Commander-in-Chief.

The governor, who described the incident as “extremely unimaginable”, assured that the Lagos State Government would make the CCTV footage of the shooting incident available to the state’s judicial panel of inquiry investigating the matter.

He said: “We will be committed to a full investigation of what happened and people would be held accountable. They certainly would be held accountable. We would do everything possible to ensure that they are held accountable.

“People have claimed that their friends and family members have been killed. So, this Judicial Panel of Enquiry is meant to bring all of these stories to accountability; where we can make restitution, where families can prove and identify officers that were responsible for this.

“I am not the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces; I am Governor of a State. The report would be out and we would channel the report to all the relevant authorities in the state to ensure that every one that is found culpable is accountable for the act.”

On if he and President Buhari were compelled to speak on the protesters because of international pressures, Sanwo-Olu said: “There are no international pressures whatsoever. These are genuine protesters that we all believe and we all have knowledge about. I was the first governor among governors with due respect to all my other colleagues who came out to meet with them, who started from the front. I carried the EndSARS flags with them. I met with them twice and we all had the rally together and worked together.”

Sanwo-Olu further assured that the two-week-long #EndSARS protests would bring about positive change in the country.

“I genuinely believe there would be a change for two reasons. One, what has happened, especially in Lagos is extremely unimaginable. Number two is that it was a clarion call for all of us in government, especially understanding and realizing what the youths truly want us to be doing. So, it hit all of us like a thunderbolt and it was just a wake-up call,” he said.

LAGOS IS BLEEDING: Deaths, injuries as policemen, soldiers rain bullets on #ENDSARS protesters in Lekki

Policemen and soldiers out to enforce a 24 hour curfew at Lekki Toll Gate shot at #EndSARS protesters Tuesday night.

Reports reaching TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) indicates that some persons have been feared killed while several others were injured.

The shooting led to the dispersal of the protesters, who had remained at the Plaza, hours after the curfew went into force.

Video clips from the scene, showed some protesters on the floor, hit by bullets.

Staccato of gunshots can also be heard from a video, as the protesters ran for their lives.

The protesters had defied the curfew imposed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu imposed at about noon today.

Earlier before the shooting spree, some officials came to remove the CCTV cameras at the gate.

The aim is now clear: to avoid any evidence that may be used against the police or army.
