Why we’re shutting down additional section of Eko Bridge – FG

The Acting Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Mrs. Forosola Oloyede on Saturday, announced the further shutdown of additional section of Eko Bridge to avert disaster.

Recall that Oloyede had on Friday night,  informed the public of damage to the Ijora Olopa section of the bridge as a result of fire.

Also recalled that she announced a partial closure affecting the Apongbon-Ijora section of the Costain bound lane of the bridge pending inspection and result of integrity tests on the infrastructure.

However, in another statement on Saturday, she raised further concerns over the structural safety of some parts of the bridge leading to closure of the opposite lane.

She said: Upon further assessment with the ministry’s Bridge Consultant; On behalf of the Honorable Minister of Works and Housing- Mr Babatunde Fashola,  I want to inform the public that both bounds of the bridge, the Apongbon– Ijora Olopa and the Ijora Olopa–Apongbon sections will be closed to motorists.”

She said the closure would last till comprehensive inspection and integrity tests were carried out.

“The reason for this is to avert any catastrophe and safeguard the life of pedestrians and motorists.

“The Inspection and Integrity tests are planned to be carried out as soon as possible. Further updates on the closure will be communicated as events develop,” she said.

Oloyede advised motorists to use alternative routes and cooperate with traffic management agencies who would be on ground to direct and manage movement.

“We regret the inconveniences this may cause the public,” she said.

Travel ban: NANS threatens total shutdown of UK, Canada embassies in 72 hours if…

The National Association of Nigerian Students has given the British Mission in Nigeria 72 hours to rescind its decision to pause the issuance and processing of visas to Nigerians over the discovery of the COVID-19 Omicron variant.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that NANS gave the ultimatum during its protest at the British Deputy High Commission in Lagos on Tuesday over the travel and visa restrictions placed on Nigerians over the Omnicron variant of the COVID-19 virus.

“If there is an absence of solutions in the next 72 hours, NANS will have no other choice but to shut down the activities of British and Canadian missions across Nigeria,” NANS said at the protest.

NAN reports that following the discovery of the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron, the British government put Nigeria and other selected African countries on the red list.

The variant was first reported recently in South Africa and has since then been found in 38 countries including France, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal, Australia and others.

Chairman, NANS Ogun Chapter, Kehinde Damilola, told NAN during the protest that the association was displeased with the decision of the British government to place a ban on travels from Nigeria.

According to him, the decision is pure racism and an attempt to intimidate African countries, particularly Nigeria.

“We have come to say enough is enough with the treatment Nigeria constantly receives from Europe. The narrative has to change because Nigerians are not a symbol of havoc or hazard.

“This decision will affect not only visitors but also our international students who are studying in the U.K.

“The omicron variant did not emanate from Nigeria, neither do we have up to a dozen cases so why should we be punished for it even over other European countries?” he said.

The student leader urged the British mission in Nigeria to look into the situation without delay, adding that the exorbitant quarantine fee for students and visitors should also be revoked.

Also, NANS South-West Coordinator Adegboye Olatunji, said that COVID-19 was not an African virus neither was the new variant, Omicron.

“Placing a ban on only African members of the Commonwealth is not right.

“We should be thinking of solutions on how to eradicate the virus and vaccinate Africans instead of coming up with red lists.

“We have thousands of students studying in the U.K. who have plans of returning to Nigeria for the festive season but their plans have been cut short.

“We are not here to fight anyone, neither are we here to cause havoc,” Olatunji said.

He added that NANS was ready to take the mantle to fight relentlessly for Nigerians studying abroad.

NAN reports that policemen and other security agents were on ground at the British Deputy High Commission to prevent any security breach.

Speaking with NAN, an official of the British mission, who did not disclose his name, told NAN that audiovisual recording of the protest had been forwarded to appropriate authorities to address the issue.

“We will be relating happenings to the Deputy Head of Mission who will, in turn, make calls to London.

“That is where we are going to take it from because we can’t make instant decisions,” he said.

  • Petrol marketers back FG on subsidy removal; NANS threatens to shutdown Nigeria

Petrol marketers back FG on subsidy removal; NANS threatens to shutdown Nigeria

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), said yesterday, that its support for the Federal Government over the planned removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), stems from the realization that the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari on August 16 makes no provision for subsidy.

Besides, IPMAN President, Chinedu Okoronkwo, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday that his association has consistently “advised the government to remove petrol subsidy because it is not in the interest of development of the downstream sector.”

But the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) threatened, yesterday, to shut down the country should the Federal Government go ahead with the planned fuel subsidy removal.

The students’ body also rejected the government’s plan to pay N5,000 transport allowance to 40 million Nigerians to cushion the effect of soaring fuel prices.

Okoronkwo, in the NAN interview, said: “We welcome the decision of the government to stop subsidising petrol by 2022 and we are hoping it will attract more investments to the sector, especially with the passage of PIA.”

He added: “What we want is that a level playing field be provided for everyone in the sector to encourage competition once the subsidy is removed.”

Also speaking on the issue, the immediate-past President, Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN), Tunji Oyebanji, said continued subsidising of petrol was not sustainable in light of current economic realities.

He said the 2022 deadline was realistic and its impact might be mitigated with the coming on stream of the 650,000BPD Dangote Refinery, Bua Group Refinery, Waltersmith Refinery and other modular refineries.

Oyebanji, who is the Managing Director of 11 Plc, however, faulted the plan to replace the subsidy with cash transfer to Nigerians due to lack of a reliable data base in the country.

“In my personal opinion, I am of the view that such funds should be channeled to areas like education and mass transportation that would be accessible to ordinary Nigerians,” Mr Oyebanji said.

Death of final year student: OAU students reject, protest management’s shutdown of institution

Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife have protested against the closure of the school on the directive of its management.

The aggrieved students trooped out as early as 7:30am on Saturday as they stormed the streets within and outside the campus in Osun State.

They shut the campus gate and blocked the major roads leading to the school, insisting that the management must rescind its directive on the total shutdown of the campus and that students should vacate the hostels.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that the university management had ordered the closure of the school and directed students to vacate the hostels following a protest sparked by the death of a final year student, Aisat Adesina.

When the students’ union officials said they have zero confidence in the health facility.

They blamed Aisat’s death on personnel who they said did not attend to her properly when she was rushed to the medical facility.

“The first thing we want the management to do is to open our school with immediate effect; we want it now,” said Salvation Grace who is the Vice President-elect of the union.

“We want justice for Aisat, we want justice for Korede (another late student), we want justice for every student who went to that health centre in their lifetime and were not treated properly.”

But the management of the institution had a different view, saying the closure of the school was a necessary decision to take at the moment.

OAU Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, explained that the management took the decision after appealing to the students on four different occasions.

“If you say you are protesting, it is your fundamental human right,” he said. “But you should not allow that protest to lead to violence.

“Blocking the Ife-Ibadan Highway and the Ife-Ede Highway for nine consecutive hours is not right. We now envisaged a situation that as things were going, the university should be proactive and do the needful.”

Meanwhile, sources said late Aisat would be buried on Monday at the school’s cemetery.

BREAKING: IPOB declares total shutdown of South East on October 1, Nigeria’s Independence Day

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared a total shutdown of the Southeast on October 1.

The group also announced operation “no Nigerian flag” in all organisations in the region with effect from September 25, 2021, with the exception of commercial institutions.

In a statement from the Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB stressed that there would be no movement in the zone on that day, calling for strict adherence to the directives to avoid regrets.

It urged world leaders to use the opportunity of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly, UNGA meeting to discuss the sufferings of the “two persecuted nations of Biafra and Ambazonia.”

The statement reads: “IPOB has declared 1st of October 2021 total shutdown in Biafra land as a sign of our rejection of the evil construct called Nigeria and there shall be no movement in Biafra land on this day.

“Also IPOB has declared from today 25th September 2021 that all Nigerian flag mounted anywhere in Biafra land must be brought down, Banks exceptional, IPOB leadership will communicate to Banks directly and give them a reason they must peacefully bring down Nigeria flag in their banking premises before we do it ourselves in our own way.

“Everybody must strictly adhere to this directive from IPOB leadership, we want to let the world know you that Biafraland is not Nigeria and shall not be. Don’t say I don’t know, a word is enough for the wise.

It added: “In line with the Memorandum of Understanding, MOU and alliance between Ambazonia and Biafra nations, we the global family of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the command and leadership of our great leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, wish to ask Biafrans to support and celebrate Ambazonia Independence Anniversary on October 1st 2021.

“We advise Biafrans to stand with Ambazonia people as they celebrate their God-given freedom and independence. We should bear in mind that our brothers and sisters in Ambazonia are passing through persecutions in the hands of murderous Cameroonian Government just like Biafrans are facing similar ordeals in the hands of Fulani controlled federal government of Nigeria that sympathatises with terrorsts but kills peaceful agitators .

“We, therefore, urge world leaders to use the opportunity of the on-going United Nations General Assembly, UNGA meeting to discuss the sufferings of the two persecuted nations of Biafra and Ambazonia. Our people have suffered enough in the hands of our oppressors who are in bed with terrorists but derive pleasure in crushing peaceful agitators instead of addressing our genuine concerns.”

El-Rufai reacts to NLC’s ‘illegal’ shutdown of economic activities in Kaduna

The Governor Nasir El-Rufai led Kaduna Government has reacted to shut down of activities in the state by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) on Monday, describing the actions as illegal and unlawful trespass on government facilities.

It however said labour’s desperate actions would only reinforce government’s resolve and commitment to using all the resources it can generate to serve the interests of the majority of its citizens.

The government, in a statement by Governor El-Rufai’s Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Mr Muyiwa Adekeye, noted the conditions that compelled its decision to right-size its work force have not been altered by the NLC’s campaign of economic and social sabotage.

The statement stated: “Government’s resolve is only reinforced by the desperate actions undertaken by the NLC to unlawful trespass on government facilities, and prevent officers from signing attendance registers.”

It added: “Despite these actions, the state government has guaranteed access to the State Secretariat and other government offices.’’

“The government intends to continue running its operations in service to the people, despite the futile efforts of the NLC to impede it. Accordingly, all officers from GL 14 upwards are expected at their duty posts as usual.”

The government noted NLC has also shut healthcare access for several citizens, in addition to shutting down electricity, including several hospitals and chased away the patients.

The Special Adviser said government welcomed ‘’the visit by the leaders of the Trade Union Congress who met with our Head of Service, Bariatu Y. Mohammed, this morning.
