Why parents must train their female children to be independent – Singer Simi

Popular Nigerian singer Simisola Bolatito Kosoko, better known by her stage name ‘Simi’, has urged parents to advise and tutor their girl children to be financially independent instead of relying on people for money.

The song writer during a recent video posted on social media pleaded with parents to educate the girl child to not be dependent.

According to the mother of one, parents must ensure that their girl child is not dependent on men, stressing the security that comes along being independent.

She further asked parents who pray  for their daughters to marry a wealthy man, to shun such practices.

“Please do not raise your daughters to think that when they grow up, all they have to do is rely on someone—that they don’t have to take care of themselves.

“When someone is spoiling you, it shouldn’t be because you cannot spoil yourself.

“As they are spoiling you, you too, you’re spoiling them. Let them know that you’re standing strong. There is security in knowing that you got yourself” she said.

Simi also said that a woman’s economic power is in fending for herself, protecting herself and being able to acknowledge that she is a complete person.

Parents raise your daughters to be self sufficient and not to think that when they grow up, all they have to do is rely on someone to take care of them.

“There is security in being independent. A woman’s economic power is in fending for herself and being able to confidently acknowledge that she’s a complete person. Let them know that you are standing strong,” she said.

“You deserve good things; you need to occupy space.” She further said.

She called for those in position to give opportunities to women deserving

I admit that I say this from a place of privilege. I grew up among people who believed in me, pushed me and encouraged me. I had chances that took me from here to here.

“But there are lots of women that have had to work with less. Less love, less faith, less kindness, less opportunity.

“And that’s where we as a society have to step in, and when you are in a position to give a deserving woman an opportunity, please give it to her.”

She added that “If your female friend, girlfriend, or wife is thriving, don’t be intimidated by it. Support is sexy,” while urging men to support their partners.

Women are being pitted against each other in music industry – Simi

According to her, the reason is because they are often pitted against each other.

In a recent interview with Angela Yee, the she  admitted that fans pitting female artists against each other put pressure on their relationship.

“Fans pit women against each other in the music industry. It’s so intense sometimes. Sometimes it can be really distracting because there are not as many of us in the [music] industry compared to the guys.

“When a new female artist breaks into the industry, they [fans] just pit her against us with all forms of comparisons.

“We can all thrive. I have spoken about women several times even in my songs. But because I’m an artist people assume that the only way my talking about women can be valid is by featuring women in my songs. It’s just so weird because there are women in different walks of life.

“They do pit us against each other a lot and I think sometimes that puts some pressure on the kind of relationship that we would have otherwise.”
