2023 ELECTIONS: “Just use finger to point at the people you wanted to select” – Simi tells INEC

Nigerian singer, Simisola Ogunleye-Kosoko, better known as Simi, has described as a joke the N300 billion naira budget for the 2023 general elections, stressing that it would have been better for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to “just use a finger to point at the people you wanted to select.”

She made this known via her Twitter handle while calling out INEC on Monday, March 20.

She tweeted: “300 billion naira budget for this joke of an election. @inecnigeria you might have as well given them back the money to fix some hospitals and schools and just used finger to point at the people you wanted to select.”

Adding: “The blatant rigging and nobody in power addressed it. Lol. Giant problem of Africa. Anybody that saw the disenfranchisement and didn’t condemn it better keep their prayers for Nigeria. She doesn’t need prayers from people like you.”

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Simi started her career as a gospel singer, releasing her debut studio album in 2008, titled Ogaju.

She also played as one of the top judges in season 7 of the Nigerian idol TV show in 2022. She gained public recognition in 2014 after releasing “Tiff”, a song that was nominated for Best Alternative Song at The Headies 2015.

Simi signed a record deal with X3M Music in 2014, but left the label in May 2019 following the expiration of her contract.

She released her second studio album Simisola on September 8, 2017. Her third studio album Omo Charlie Champagne, Vol. 1 was released to coincide with her thirty-first birthday on April 19, 2019.

The singer launched her record label Studio Brat in June 2019.

Nigerian music star, Simisola Bolatito Kosoko, better known by her stage name Simi, has described the 2023 presidential election as “blatantly corrupt”.

She expressed her disappointment with some of the incidents recorded in the 2023 Presidential and National Assembly election conducted last weekend.

Simi in a tweet she shared, said everyone should be fighting for justice and a free and fair election in spite of the political party they support.

How can you even support anything that is this blatantly corrupt? Didn’t you see the chaos yesterday. The thugs? The disenfranchisement? Regardless of who you support

The “AYO” crooner, who also wondered how one can support this election, also pointed out that there were thugs and people were disenfranchised.

Simi tweeted: “How can you even support anything that is this blatantly corrupt? Didn’t you see the chaos yesterday. The thugs? The disenfranchisement? Regardless of who you support, shouldn’t all of us be fighting for justice and a fair election? What is your priority? Can’t you read the room?”

  • I lived with a sickness no one around me understood – Adekunle Gold reveals

I lived with a sickness no one around me understood – Adekunle Gold reveals

Popular Nigerian singer, Adekunle Gold has revealed he battled with sickle cell anemia from birth and how frustrating and painful it was at some point in his life.

In an intimate letter to fans, Adekunle stated that at a stage, his family couldn’t afford the hospital bills so he had to endure the pain.

He wrote: “It feels liberating to finally be able to share this part of my life with you, to finally be able to speak my truth. When I talk about how I struggled to get to where I am today, I need you to know that my struggle was real. I was born with sickle cell disease. It was life and death, it was physical, mental, financial, you name it and I went through it all. It was tough, painful, and frustrating. I lived with a sickness no one around me understood, I lived with restrictions all my childhood.

“I wasn’t able to join some of the most minor child play and liberating activities like going out in the rain. The times when I insisted and rebelled against my parent’s orders and went out in the rain, I would end up having a crisis. The nights were painful and lonely, nights that no one could help me get through. It was just me, God, and my mind. The pains and shivers were unbearable.

“They always came in the night, when my family had no means to transport me to a hospital. We simply couldn’t afford the constant hospital bills so I had no choice but to endure the pain.

“My mum wanted me to be well, she did her best. She took me to all the churches she could find, I’m grateful for her because she saw a future for me.

“A future where no illness or sickness could hold me back from my purpose. From the life, I was destined to live.

“Sickle cell disease took away my freedom, my childhood. I lost friends, a lot of them. Some didn’t understand the restrictions and rules I had to live by, some just didn’t want to deal with my Illness or thought it was a nasty or contagious disease that they could catch. I was a burden for some. Living with sickle cell is far from living a normal life.

“One of the most intense crises I had was at the age of 20, I remember laying in my bed in the middle of the night asking for an end to it all. I begged God to take my life away because I couldn’t understand what I did to deserve the pain my body and mind were under. As usual with sickle crisis after some days, the pain subsided and God asked me; “That end you begged me for, do you still want it?” Of course, I said no and that’s when everything changed for me. That’s when I realized that I had been given another opportunity to live my dreams and to show those that mocked me that sickle cell anemia was never going to end me, that it was never going to hold me back from my dreams and aspirations.

“My body caves in once in a while, and some symptoms come back but what this disease has taught me is resilience. Sickle cell anemia gave me hope, made me tough, gave me the discipline I needed to be who I am today, and built my character. I mean I went through a whole 5 weeks of back-to-back performances and didn’t fall sick. Grace.

“My mind and body were challenged and I’m stronger, more determined, and ready to take on the world. I’m ready for Adekunle Gold Supremacy, I’m ready to live and enjoy the 5 Star life that I deserve, that my body toiled for.

“I’m sharing my testimony with you because I hope that you can find strength in my truth. Some ailments hold us back but I’m thankful this hasn’t. I want to encourage you in whatever it is you’re going through, know that there is hope. You are strong and you must not give up. YOU CAN DO THIS!

“Victory lies at the end for you just as it did for me.

“If you know anyone going through any struggle, physical, health, or mental. Be kind, and show compassion. In fact, be kind to everyone, you just never know what they’re dealing with privately. Be supportive, be gentle, and love endlessly.

“If you are a sickler, know that the disease does not define you. Don’t allow it to limit your dreams or cap your potential. Spread your wings and dream big! Hope to see you soaring in the big skies.

    “All my love.”

  • Simi reveals why she dumped Nollywood for music

Nigerian singer, Simisola Bolatito Kosoko, better known as Simi, has revealed why she left Nollywood after acting just one movie.

The star is one of the most popular female singers and is well known across the continent.

Aside from singing, she has also been on television as a recent judge on Nigerian Idol and has acted in one movie: the Kunle Afolanyan produced Mokalik.

During an interview, Simi talked about her music, Nigerian Idol alongside motherhood, and the reasons she only appeared in a movie and that was all.

SHE SAID: “IT HAS NOT BEEN EASY TRANSITIONING FROM BEING A BABY GIRL HERSELF TO NOW BEING A MOTHER ALONGSIDE OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES”

“IT IS NOT EASY. BUT I THINK IT’S JUST PRIORITIZING AND THEN COMMITTING TO YOUR PRIORITIES BECAUSE THE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS YOU HAVE IN YOUR LIFE, THE LESS TIME YOU HAVE TO DEDICATE TO ALL THOSE THINGS. WHAT’S IMPORTANT AGAIN IS UNDERSTANDING THAT THIS IS HARD BEFORE YOU EVEN GO INTO IT SO IT DOESN’T OVERWHELM YOU TOO MUCH. I LOVE MY FAMILY. I LOVE MY DAUGHTER, I LOVE MY HUSBAND, AND I LOVE MUSIC SO MUCH SO IT’S JUST FINDING THAT BALANCE AND COMMITTING TO IT”.

Pertaining to reasons why she acted in only one movie “Mokalik” and then left Nollywood, Simi said: ‘I’M NOT AS CRAZY ABOUT ACTING AS I AM ABOUT MUSIC, TO BE HONEST, BUT IT’S SOMETHING THAT IT’S EXCITING TO DO ONCE IN A WHILE. PEOPLE HAVE MENTIONED IT TO ME SO MAYBE WHEN I’M NOT (BUSY). I’LL TRY TO DO MORE.”

Simi started her career as a gospel singer, releasing her debut studio album in 2008, titled Ogaju she also played as one of the top judges in the season 7 of Nigerian idol Tv show in 2022.

She gained prominence in 2014 after releasing “Tiff”, a song that was nominated for Best Alternative Song at The Headies 2015.

Simi encouraged growing artistes who desire success to put their social media pages to maximum use by posting things that relate to their music.

She also urged them to shun posting irrelevant things that will not contribute to their growth musically.

Simi wrote: “You’re a serious growing artist and you have only three posts on your page: a picture of sunset, one of aeroplane and one of your shoe.

“Nothing with your music in it, that’s not a great tool.

“If you want it badly always be selling yourself.

Simi berates air host over comment on daughter

Outspoken singer, Simi has berated a flight attendant who she claimed gave a ‘fake’ compliment to her daughter.

The mother of one made this known in a Twitter post on Thursday.

According to her, the host made a gesture towards her daughter which she tagged as fake.

“This air host guy really did one fake aww for Deja. Is it by force to say aw for baby. I did not greet you. She did not greet you. Why you fake aww my daughter. God save you I’m working on myself. Ko ko aw buruku danu. It’s aww but your eyes are not smiling. Bastard,” she wrote.

During a recent Instagram live session monitored by TheNewsGuru, Simi said she wants women to get what they deserve.

“There were some ideas about women that were not very useful for women but I felt like it would be good to use my sound to speak out for my people (women.) The funny thing is that I expected more backlash and attacks after I dropped the song. But I am genuinely surprised that people are receptive to the song. I think that people are more open to the discussions especially if one is privileged in life. I had an interview a few days ago and the interviewer asked me “Do you hate men?” I replied that I don’t think I have ever said or done anything that insinuates that I hate men, I don’t have any reason to hate men. I simply want better things for women; I just want women to have what they deserve. I may not be able to change the world today or tomorrow but I am hoping that it can be a part of the steps that we are going to take to (get to) that point. Obviously, things used to be worse than this but thankfully we have more women now that are more outspoken than in the past.

“I think it is hard to get acknowledgement as a woman, firstly some people do not even expect that one would be good, some people question one’s talent compared to the male counterpart. But it is like as a woman one is undermined and will have to work extra hard to get half the things that men have. Honestly, it is exhausting especially when one is speaking out and nothing is changing. By the grace of God, I have got a level of success but there are some women who haven’t. They are still trying to find their path, who would speak and fight for them because their voices are not that loud? But if one is talking, people think one is talking too much if it is something that makes them uncomfortable, but if it is something they like or they agree with, they will support you. However, I think it has become a little bit easier but I know a lot of female artiste that are still waiting for their break. We are not halfway there.”

Why I don’t share private affairs on social media -Simi

Sonorous singer, Simi has opened up on why she doesn’t share her private affairs on social media. Simi who captured the struggles women faced in her new single ‘Woman’ made this known during an instagram live session on Thursday.

She said knowing what not to share on social media helps her to set boundaries.

“It helps me to set boundaries and just keep those things to myself. I might have things that I am doing where it’s only a select few who I know that really care about me even if I wasn’t an artiste that they would know about. I don’t want to be a spectacle, but that is how people see me.This is entertainment. A lot of people don’t have boundaries. People will say things to you, they do things to you like you are not a person. When things happens to a celebrity, somebody says it’s part of what they signed up for, but that’s now what they signed up for. What you signed up for is to sing, that doesn’t mean you signed up to be unhappy. Or you signed up for people to judge you all the time. Don’t say things because it’s your opinion. You don’t have to share it.Social media has obviously broken up that divide. So there is that access. Anybody can drop comments .That is why I share only the things people should know. Because if you don’t have access to certain things, you cannot have opinions about them”.

Speaking further, the mother of one said people sometimes think she talks too much.

“People think one is talking too much has long as it is something that makes them uncomfortable, but if it is something they like, if it is something they agree with, they will support you”.

The ‘Duduke’ crooner also noted that Nigerian singer, Asa is one of her music influences.

“Asa opened the door to be able to do things that are outside the box. There was a mainstream sound, which is changing by the way. So listening to her made me feel like I can do anything”.

‘Duduke’ singer, Simisola Kosoko a.k.a Simi has opened up on reason behind the #NobodyLikeWomen challenge, which she initiated on Instagram.

TheNewsGuru reports that for the past few days, women had shared back and white images of themselves, where they shared offensive comments they have received in the past.

Taking a cue from her, dozens of female celebrities, social media influencers and women started sharing pictures and images of themselves with these destructive statements.

One of the highlights of the challenge was when reality TV star, Khafi Ekpata, revealed that a critic asked her if her baby was ugly.

Simi noted that she started the challenge to help women challenge the things that have been said to demean them.

She said, “The reason many, many women are so strong today is that they’ve had to defy the things that were designed to make them weak. Stereotypes. Shame. Fear. Pain. Abuse.

“I respect the strength and courage it has taken many women in these past few days to be vulnerable enough to confront the things that people have said to them to poke at their insecurities and to demean them.

“Many of you have defied the status quo and changed the narrative. You’re brave. You are strong. You are a woman. And there’s nobody like you.”

In the same vein, the singer also revealed that by midnight, she will release her latest single, “Woman”.

The mother-of-one also added, “In less than 12 hours, by the grace of God, my single “Woman” will be with you.

“I’m grateful for every woman that is standing in the gap for all of us. Your vulnerability is courage. I hope that, going forward, we are mindful of the words we say and the seeds that we plant in the lives of people.

“I also hope that we learn to support and protect women that are not able to do so for themselves. Now we celebrate Women! See you at midnight. #NobodyLikeWoman”
