The statement reads: “late on Sunday night, 29th October 2023, I was inundated with reports that the hallowed chamber of the Rivers state House of Assembly has been gutted by fire. The blaze was put out by the fire service, after which Security agencies took control of the situation.

my visit to the Assembly complex on Monday, 30th October 2023 was to assess the level of damage and undertake remedial measures to protect lives and property within the assembly complex. I charged the security agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident and report to me.

Shortly after, I got reports that the state House of Assembly had broken into two factions: one claiming to have impeached and suspended the house leader and 3 others preparatory to initiating an impeachment action against me, and the other rival faction impeaching the speaker and deputy speaker, thus sparking off some form of political crisis.

I wish to thank the president of the federal republic of Nigeria, his excellency bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his fatherly intervention which opened a series of communication channels to facilitate the timely resolution of the festering crises. I wish to also thank our elders who are currently intervening in the matter.

let me clearly state that my actions are aimed at restoring peace and stability in our state. i am a man of peace and as governor, the advancement of our state is my primary concern. consequently, no sacrifice is too much for me to make to achieve this objective.

Furthermore, it is the collective responsibility of the immediate past governor and minister of the federal capital territory, his excellency,  chief barrister, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike,  GSSRS, life bencher and my humble self, to leverage on our positions and influences within and outside the state to advance the progress, security and well-being of our people.

we must therefore not allow circumstances that could retard all efforts at achieving greatness for our people to prevail.

On my part, I am always willing and ready to embrace the path to lasting peace and tranquility with a commitment to consummating all efforts and initiatives by Mr. president and other well-meaning Nigerians, including my brother governors and the elders.

I assure the good people and youths of rivers state, that peace will certainly prevail, and we shall continue to work together to advance the peace, security, progress and development of our state.

as governor, i sincerely apologize to the good people of Rivers state for the regrettable anxieties of the last few days, while thanking you all for your concerns, and continued support, love, and Prayers.

Rivers crisis: Wike denies demanding 25% from State coffers

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, on Thursday, denied he is demanding 25 per cent from the coffers of the Rivers government.

Wike denied this when a delegation of Rivers Caucus in the 10th National Assembly comprising three Senators and 11 members of the House of Representatives visited him in Abuja.

Recall crisis had erupted in Rivers, after an attempt by the Rivers Assembly to impeach the incumbent Governor, Mr Siminalayi Fubara.

“I was a governor for eight years. I am now FCT Minister, and some will say that I am asking for 25 per cent.

“I am not interested in the governance of Rivers; I am not interested. I am here as a governor in FCT, but I am interested in the political structure of Rivers which we have built over the years.

“If anybody dares to bring it down, the person will face the crisis he wants in his life. Perform or don’t perform, but don’t touch our political structure.

“Anybody who puts his hand in our structure, anything you see, take it”, he warned.

He urged members of the caucus not to disappoint the State but work as a team for the good of the people of Rivers.

The minister said: “When you make mistakes, we will call you and tell you that you are making a mistake. Take it in good faith that we are calling your attention because we think that you are derailing.

“But when we call you don’t say we are expecting a kickback of 25 per cent from you or so and so per cent.

“All of us are one. We’ve built this political structure for a long time, since 2015, and we have emerged victorious.

“As the opposition party from 2015, I saw hell. The Federal Government fought me left right and centre, but with your support, we survived.

“When you work as a team, you’ll discover that it is difficult for an outsider to defeat you at home.”

Earlier, Mr Kinsley Chinda (PDP-Rivers), Minority Leader in the House of Representatives, who spoke on behalf of the delegation, said that the visit was to identify with the minister.

Chinda, representing Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency, added that the visit was also to thank Wike for his support during the 2023 general elections.

He added that he played a key role in their emergence as law makers in the National Assembly.

He said that Wike’s appointment was well deserved, condemned the political crisis in the state and declared their total support to Wike.

Fire guts Rivers Assembly amid threat to impeach Gov Fubara

The Rivers State House of Assembly (RSHA) was on Sunday night  set ablaze by yet to be known political thugs over the alleged move to impeach the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara and Leader of the House, Edison Ehie.

Recall that civil society group, Coalition of Democratic Vanguard (CDV), recently  issued a strong  warning to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike and his allies who are allegedly seeking to impeach  Fubara and Ehie.

However, it was  gathered that some thugs in a white Hilux van invaded the assembly complex at about 9.00pm yesterday, disarmed the security personnel on duty and allegedly  carried out the act.

Findings show that the incident occurred at the assembly complex, opposite the Headquarters of the State Command Police, on Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.

There were speculations that the legislature had concluded plans to impeach Gov. Fubara and Ehie today at it resumed sitting following some undisclosed issues.

A security source, who pleaded anonymity and confirmed the incident, said it took efforts of police and the State Fire Service teams to put out the fire.

The source said: “Yes, the Rivers State House of Assembly main chamber was under attack and set on fire. It was police men and the fire service team that helped to put out the fire.”

Meanwhile, CDV  had earlier issued a statement, “warning Nyesom Wike and his allies  against moves to  impeach Governor Fubara and  Ehie.

The coalition in the statement signed by Mr Thompson Orumbo (Chairman) and Peter Nwabunna (Secretary), condemned any attempt to undermine the democratic process and urged all parties involved to respect the will of the people and prioritise the betterment of Rivers State.

They stated: “At the core of any functioning democracy lies the principle of free and fair elections, which provide citizens with the opportunity to choose their leaders, and Rivers people have chosen Sir Siminalayi Fubara. Impeachment attempts should be rooted in concrete evidence of wrongdoing and carried out only through legitimate channels, ensuring transparency and accountability.”

“The Coalition emphasises that any attempts to impeach Governor Fubara and Ehie must adhere to the democratic principles, if not, it would be resisted by Rivers people.

“Rivers State has made significant strides in the pursuit of development and stability under the leadership of Governor Fubara. The governor has championed policies and initiatives that have positively impacted the lives of the citizens. Political squabbles and power struggles should not hinder the progress, and the people’s mandate must be respected.”

The Coalition further urged  “Nyesom Wike and his co-travellers to prioritise the interests of the people and set aside personal and political interest.”
“The said that the unity and stability of Rivers State should be the primary goal, with cooperative efforts dedicated to achieving sustained development, improved infrastructure, and the welfare of its citizens.

“Should Nyesom Wike and his co-travellers have genuine concerns regarding the performance or integrity of Governor Fubara and Edison Ehie, they should first present concrete evidence through appropriate channels such as investigations or inquiries. This would ensure that any actions taken are based on facts instead of subjective perceptions or personal motives,” the coalition added.

Fubara, a former Accountant General of the state, was chosen by Wike to become the governor of the state.

Stop attending political meetings in Abuja – Wike tells Fubara

The immediate past Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has urged Governor Siminalayi Fubara to stop attending political meetings in Abuja regularly.

Wike during a flagged off of
Port Harcourt Ring Road project, noted that nothing good comes out of such meetings.

“Stay here and work, you’ll feel happy. At the end of the day, Rivers people will appreciate you,” he said.

The former governor urged Fubara to govern the state without fear but with humility and good governance.

Wike, a former Minister of State for Education, said his successor has paid 75%of the total sum, which is N150 billion, to Julius Berger, adding that although people may express worry over the amount expended on the road yet, “no one can develop the state better than us.”

He said: “We thank God Almighty that God gave us somebody who would not come like those, they’ve not entered power, you see the arrogance. Just the mere fact that they are the candidate. Arrogance has come then when they are elected, not to talk about when they are being sworn in. See, the governor we have, is still very humble.

”Mr. Governor, let me also advise you, the people that elected you are in the state. They are not in Abuja. Stay in your state, and face the challenges of your people.

“Don’t allow them to lure you to be sleeping in Abuja, that there’s one meeting or the other, and nothing comes out of those meetings. Stay in your state and develop your state. They won’t give you anything there.

“Our money is not to develop any political party, our money is to develop our state. They would be luring you because they think with Rivers, money would come and one party or the other would grow. Our money is for the development of Rivers State

“Stay here and work, you’ll feel happy. At the end of the day, Rivers people will appreciate you.”
