Gov. Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers on Tuesday  sworn-in 16 new permanent secretaries, urging them to be professional in the discharge of their duties, to ensure effective service delivery.

Fubara gave the advice shortly after the permanent secretaries were sworn-in at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

The governor said that the permanent secretaries were chosen not because they were lucky but they were found competent in their various ministries.

He added that the state chose them because they could be trusted to offer greater service to the state.

“Your responsibilities as permanent secretaries are so much, knowing that the state has a lot of ministries not maned by adequate authorities for a while.

“This brought the reason for government to appointment more permanent secretaries to fill the spaces,” governor said.

He said that the number of the newly appointed permanent secretaries would enable all the ministries to have heads pending when they would have political heads.

He urged to give their best in their ministries so that their best could be felt by government and the good people of the state.

“You are given the responsibilities today as the heads of ministries so that we can achieve the purpose of government.

“You are the administrative heads, so we are doing this because we want to chat a proper course for this government.”

The governor urged the permanent secretaries to see their appointments as a call to duty.

“it is not a position that you see as political ground, but you are purely chosen because you have what it takes to man these ministries. Some of you are already manning the ministries.”he said.

Fubara also pledged to provide conducive environment for them to give their best service to the government and the people of the state

According to him, my administration will focus on the better welfare of Rivers people with thriving security, and you are required to key into his policies to ensure better service delivery.

Fubara directed the Head of the Rivers State Civil Service, Dr George Nwaeke, to hand over official cars to the 16 newly sworn-in permanent secretaries.

  • Anxiety in Rivers as Supreme Court reserves ruling on Gov Fubara’s fate

Anxiety in Rivers as Supreme Court reserves ruling on Gov Fubara’s fate

The Supreme Court on Monday reserved judgement in the appeal filed by the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Patrick Tonye-Cole, against the victory of Gov. Siminalayi Fubara.

A five-member panel headed by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun reserved judgement on the appeal after all parties in the suit adopted their briefs of arguments.

Tonye-Cole had approached the apex court, insisting that Fubara did not resign as Accountant-General of the State and acted as accountant general exceeding the stipulated time as provided by the Constitution and Electoral Act before the election.

The APC candidate also argued that Fubara was not qualified to contest or even to be declared winner of the election.

Recall the Appeal Court sitting in Lagos State had affirmed the election of Fubara as the Governor of Rivers.

The court dismissed the petition filed by Tonye-Cole, against Fubara, PDP and INEC.

The APC candidate had requested that the court order INEC to declare him winner of the March governorship election in Rivers.

But the court held that all the appellants failed to prove the allegation of non-compliance with the Electoral Act.

The court also faulted the tribunal for dismissing Tonye-Cole’s appeal on the ground that APC sponsored him and had withdrawn the petition against Gov. Fubara’s victory.

The appellate court further held that the fact that APC withdrew its petition against Fubara’s victory did not prevent its candidate, Tonye-Cole, from pursuing his appeal.

Fubara gave the assurance at the Interdenominational church thanksgiving service in commemoration of the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day held at St.Cyprian’s Anglican Church, Port Harcourt.

“For us as a government, we will continue to give our support, not just to the fallen heroes as we are doing, but to also those who are alive defending the integrity of our country,” he said.

Fubara also affirmed that his administration would  continue to perform as expected by addressing critical issues of governance and furthering the development of the state.

Fubara stated that his administration would intentionally be remembered for good and positive deeds after his tenure as the governor of the state.

Fubara said that in attending to the duties of governance, he had prayed to God to grant his administration the grace to perform and ensure that its activities and programmes implemented would meaningfully solve the socioeconomic and developmental problems of the people.

“As a government, we are performing. My prayer is for the Almighty God to grant us the grace to perform in a manner that when we leave office, people will remember us positively, not for negative purposes,” he said.

Fubara described the duties of the security agencies as giving their time to perform on the stage of life when they discharge their duties.

“It is not an easy thing for you to be on the stage just like we are today, and after performing people will remember you. So, I am happy that we are all associated with the good performance of the armed forces,”he said.

Earlier, the Bishop of the Diocese of Niger Delta,Rev. Emmanuel Oko-Jaja called on the government and all Nigerians alike to reflect on, honour and to support members of the military for their various levels of sacrifices in the protection of the territorial sovereignty of Nigeria.

  • Rivers Assembly asks Fubara to re-present 2024 budget

Rivers Assembly asks Fubara to re-present 2024 budget

The Rivers House of Assembly on Tuesday, passed a resolution, urging Gov. Siminalayi Fubara to re-present the state 2024 budget and the medium term expenditure framework for consideration.

This followed the adoption of a motion by the Speaker, Mr Martin Amaewhu during the 90th plenary of the House at the legislators’ quarters, Port Harcourt.

Presenting the motion, Amaewhu said it was worrisome that the House had yet to receive the budget and the expenditure framework from the executive.

He said that the governor must present them for approval in line with the 1999 Constitution.

Recall Fubara had on December 13 presented a budget of N800 billion for 2024 to a four-man House of Assembly for approval.

The governor also signed the budget into law on December 14 barely 24 hours after it was presented to the lawmakers.

However, under the peace accord facilitated by President Bola Tinubu, Fubara was expected to re-present the budget as part of conditions to end the political crisis in the State.

  • Rivers APC seeks Wike’s connivance to remove Fubara as Gov

Rivers APC seeks Wike’s connivance to remove Fubara as Gov

As the political crisis in Rivers State continues to spiral, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the State has appealed to Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to come to the assistance of the party in the State.

Mr Tony Okocha, Chairman of the State APC Caretaker Committee, made the appeal on Thursday in Abuja when he briefed newsmen, insisted that the State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara must be impeached.

The Rivers APC stressed the option of initiating impeachment proceedings against Gov. Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers over a number of Constitutional infringements are in the works.

“Although I am not a member of the State House of Assembly, but impeachment is a democratic process. Impeachment is not a coup detat,” he said.

Okocha said that the party would do everything possible to protect the 27 People’s Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers who defected to the APC.

“So, we are telling the Governor that he cannot thrive on illegality, we will petition the judge before the National Judicial Council (NJC) for giving that jankara order against our members.

“So we want to appeal to our party to join us to defend our members who are being ill treated by the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Speaking on the demolition of the State House of Assembly complex, Okocha said the APC would not allow illegality to thrive in the State.

He added that the defected lawmakers would continue to meet else where, so long as they had the mace, which was the symbol of authority with them.

“You cannot place something on nothing and you expect it to stand. Illegality is illegal.

“Let me also let you know that what makes an assembly is not the structure, but the human beings in that assembly.

“So, an assembly can be moved to anywhere, provided the mace which is its symbol of authority is there. As at yesterday, about 27 members sat and took far-reaching decisions on state matters,” he said.

He said the APC had the majority members at the House of Assembly, having 27 out of its 32 members.

This, he said, was in line with the mandate given the party National Secretariat, to reach out to members of opposition parties in the state.

“We will fight illegality, we will not allow illegality to fester in our state. It is our duty now to defend our 27 members who are members of the State Assembly.

Appealing Wike to come to the assistance of the APC in Rivers, Okocha said: “I have wooed him personally, we have told him publicly to come over and help us. He is a political juggernaut not just in Rivers, but in Nigeria at large.

“He is a force, and that is why we won the presidential election after losing the three senatorial seats and all the State House of Assembly members”.

  • Rivers APC reacts over Fubara’s 2024 budget presentation to 4 lawmakers

Rivers APC reacts over Fubara’s 2024 budget presentation to 4 lawmakers

The All Progressives Congress (APC), has faulted Gov. Siminalayi Fubara’s 2024 budget presentation to four out of the 31 members of the State House of Assembly.

Fubara had on Wednesday presented the N800 billion 2024 budget to the four lawmakers believed to be loyal to him at the Government House in Port Harcourt, few minutes after the demolition of the House of Assembly Complex.

But, Mr Tony Okocha, the state APC Caretaker Committee Chairman, said in a statement in Port Harcourt that the action was unconstitutional.

Okocha said that Section 120(2) of the Constitution clearly stated that no money shall be spent except it was appropriated by the state House of Assembly.

“The presentation of a bill to 4 suspended members of the House of Assembly does not fulfill the requirements of the constitution for all the reasons stated,” he said.

Okocha cautioned that expenditure made by the state government on the outcome of such presentation was clearly an infringement on the constitution and as such sufficient grounds to commence impeachment.

He also said that Section 92(2)C prescribed that a Speaker can be removed by two third majority of the House of Assembly.

Okocha alleged that there was no evidence to show that Mr Martins Amaewhule, the Speaker of the House had been removed from office.

“Amaewhule remains the speaker of the House of Assembly, the lawmakers passed a vote of confidence on him,” he said.

Okocha also said that Section 96(1) of the constitution clearly stated that the quorum of the House of Assembly shall be one-third of all members.

“One-third of 31 minus the deceased member is clearly 11 as such four members can never form a quorum.

“Section 99 states that any member who sits or votes in a House of Assembly of a state, knowing or having reasonable grounds for knowing that he is not entitled to do so, commits an offense and is liable on conviction to such punishment as shall be prescribed in a law of the House of Assembly.

“Section 101 gives the House of Assembly the power to regulate its procedures, including summoning and recess of the House.

“Section 105(3) also defines the role of the governor of the state.

“The governor shall have power to issue a proclamation for the holding of the first session of the Assembly,’’ he said.

Okocha added: “This function the governor has performed. As such the Assembly takes over to regulate its procedures, including summoning and recess of the House.”

The Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal has affirmed Siminalayi Fubara as the authentic Governor of Rivers State.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the Appeal Court affirmed Fubara as Rivers Governor in its ruling on Tuesday.

The Rivers State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal had in October dismissed a petition filed by Patrick Tonye-Cole, challenging the election of Fubara as the Governor of the State.

BREAKING: Appeal court dismisses Cole’s petition against governor Fubara

Appeal Court sitting in Lagos State on Tuesday dismissed the petition filed by the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Patrick Tonye-Cole, against Governor Siminalayi Fubara of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The APC candidate, who was present in the courtroom on Tuesday, wanted the court to direct INEC to declare him the winner of the March governorship election in Rivers.

The Rivers State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal had in October dismissed the petition of Cole challenging the election of Fubara as the governor of the state.

The tribunal had dismissed the petition saying that the APC that sponsored Cole had withdrawn the petition against Fubara’s victory.

Not satisfied with the Tribunal’s victory, the APC candidate approached the appellate court. However, the court on Tuesday affirmed the Tribunal ruling which earlier upheld Fubara’s electoral victory in October.

Crisis over, Wike remains my ‘Oga’ – Gov Fubara

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has said his predecessor, who is the current Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, remains his Oga.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Governor Fubara said this when both of them met on Thursday at the rededication service of the 2023/2024 Legal Year of the Rivers State Judiciary,

The event held at the Saint Cyprian’s Anglican Church, Hospital Road in Port Harcourt would be the first time Fubara and Wike will meet in the State since the political crisis.

At the start of his speech, the sitting governor jokingly asked the congregants to suspend the recognition of guests in order not to commit another impeachable offence.

“My oga remains my oga. Whatever that has happened is in the past. I have not sent anybody to malign anybody,” Fubara said on the feud with Wike.

He described the political crisis as a thing of the past, adding that although it had been a trying time for the State, the misunderstanding would pass.

He promised his administration would deliver for the people.

Wike arrived towards the end of the church service. He had a handshake with Fubara, his successor, before sitting on the same row with him.

Recall that a political crisis ensued when lawmakers of the State attempted to impeach Governor Fubara.

The House of Assembly was torched and as the issue degenerated into chaos, security agents allegedly shot at the governor.
