I would have been a chin-chin seller- Waje confesses

Whenever Waje thrills fans with her soulful voice, you would think an angel has descended the earth, but unknown to many, the multiple award-winning singer would have been a chin-chin seller.

The Akure born songstress would have continued her chin-chin business If she had ignored her musical talent. She recently made this known in an interview.

Hear her:“I don’t like cooking but I love to bake and I did that for a while with my friend Ijeoma Uzodima. We used to have this chin -chin company and we used to sell everything in our stock.

“I remember that the magistrates in Onitsha at the time used to order from us and we used to sell it in a small can for about N600. We would cut 50kg chin -chin for three days and my back would be paining me. I probably would have continued with that if I was not a singer. Ijeoma who is my very good friend was actually the one who used to push me,” she said.

“I think after my performance, they gave me about N500. That was enough for a week in school. I remember the first time I earned N300,000, it was from Zain Mobile Telecomms. They had an end of the year party in Enugu and they asked me to come and perform. When I got the money, I went haywire. I am the first in my family, so the money really helped to stabilize a few things.”

  • Will Tekno’s reign continue in 2017?

Augustine Miles Kelechi a.k.a Tekno reigned supreme last year releasing acclaimed hit songs like Pana, Wash,Diana and lot’s more. Though the artiste was disqualified from participating in The Headies after his earlier nomination, he compensated for that by winning some of the major awards at Soundcity MVP awards 2016 that took place on December 29 2016.

Even Billboard magazine couldn’t resist his magic, the magazine wrote a glowing appraisal on him.

According to their article:”Tekno already has a number of hits in Nigeria, and Columbia Records took note, throwing its weight behind this agile, elastic-voiced singer. Tekno’s “Pana,” which has already accumulated more than 13 million views on YouTube and inspired a minor version of a video challenge, is romantic and light on its feet with little more than a nagging guitar line and squirts of bass, everything pegged to a serpentine forward march. There’s clearly a demand in the mainstream for feathery dance cuts like this one: close your eyes and imagine a smart radio programmer cueing this up after Drake‘s “Too Good.”

In a competitive music industry like ours, being talented is not enough. You have to combine your talent with humility, innovation and a good attitude. Will the Pana crooner be able to sustain his success? Tekno is enjoying this level of attention because he is blessed with hit songs. Will he still be relevant even without these hit songs?

Tekno cannot go far if he rests on his oars and becomes too comfortable with his achievements. The likes of Wizkid and Olamide are still relevant because they keep reinventing their music whenever we think they have thrown in the towel.

People screaming your name or your songs when you are on stage is not the true test of a great artiste. The true test of a great artiste is when your music reverberates beyond your stage performances.
