TikTok not a social media platform – Official

TikTok on Tuesday said the platform should not be seen as a social media network but rather as a content growth platform driven by high-quality content.

TikTok is a short-form video platform where users create and share videos ranging from a few seconds to a few minutes.

Keagile Makgoba, TikTok’s Head of Communications for Sub-Saharan Africa, made this known at a media workshop organised for journalists in Lagos.

According to her, contrary to public speculation, TikTok’s algorithm relies on a content graph rather than a social graph, meaning that creativity—rather than social connections—is the key to gaining visibility on the platform.

She added that it was the strength of individual content that drew users to TikTok, alongside the platform’s built-in tools that supported content discovery.

According to her, STEM  feed is one of the ‘Tools for Discovery’ that makes learning, education  and science fun.

‘’People use entertainment  to educate young ones, 10 million STEM related videos  have been published globally and 96 per cent  of the time spent on ‘For You’ feed.

“There has been 35 per cent increase  in growth of STEM  related content across the pkatform.

‘TikTok requires consistency  because it’s used as a search engine optimisation; so when posting content, descriptions  are important,” she said.

According  to her, TikTok community  guidelines  and policies  are not created in vacuum, they are a global platform  with local approach.

Makgoba said TikTok had adopted a comprehensive approach to content moderation by combining advanced moderation technology with a robust team of human moderators to ensure user safety.

She also noted that in 2023, TikTok launched the Mental Health Education Fund to support organisations in creating authoritative, engaging, and uplifting mental health content.

According to her, the fund has helped participating organisations achieve over 173 million impressions, gain more than 600,000 new followers, and drive over 200,000 website visits.

“It has also contributed to the recruitment of 466 new volunteers, thanks to a combined $7.3 million in ad credit donations,” she added.

  • Beware of scammers who sell drugs on social media – By Francis Ewherido

Beware of scammers who sell drugs on social media – By Francis Ewherido

I had a lengthy talk with a friend recently. We go way back to the early 70s. He was my senior in primary school. We lost touch but got reunited in the 90s. One day, we went to a restaurant to eat. I ordered rice and chicken. I peeled the skin off the chicken before eating the chicken. He queried me and I explained to him that my boss in the early 90s suffered a stroke.

Among the foods doctors told him to stay away from subsequently was chicken skin because of the high cholesterol. “But na the chicken skin sweet pass for the chicken nah. If I remove am, wetin remain again,” he asked rhetorically. He took the chicken skin that I removed and added to his and ate.

Thereafter, we didn’t see for a while. I didn’t know he suffered a mild stroke. I am not saying the chicken skin was responsible. Other factors and lifestyle might be responsible. When we spoke recently, he told me he had suffered three more strokes since then. I was worried and probed into what he was taking to control his blood pressure and the drugs he was taking to avoid another stroke, apart from drastic lifestyle changes that he needed to make.

What he told me jolted me and forms the basis of this article. He said he saw some drugs being sold online and patronized them, but they did not seem to be effective. I have no trust in most remedies and drugs they sell online and I told him. I have carried out my research. Most of them are scams. I have thrown a challenge before and I am throwing it again.

If your drugs or remedies you promote online are effective, come let’s team up with the media channels I use to see how we can use them to promote the wellbeing of humanity. I have zero financial interest; only service to humanity. I sustained a knee injury about 51 years ago while playing football. A player from the opposite team deliberately stepped on one of my knees. I collapsed in pain. I was scared and never told my parents when I got home. Since then, I have continued to live with the pain. At a time, I met an orthopedist who said I now have arthritis on the knee from the result of the scans.

I have read a little bit about arthritis. There is no cure. It can only be managed. Then I saw an advert on social media about a therapy that cures arthritis. I took time and read the testimonies. Many of them were people in their 20s. “Arthritis nor dey common among young people nah,” I said to myself, but the cost was reasonable, so against my better judgement, I placed order and made payment. It was promptly delivered. I could just have flushed the money down the toilet! I got zero relief!

My next experience had nothing to do with the social media. It was a physical interaction. Someone close to me recommended a therapy to me. Without checking its efficacy over time, I preached the gospel to the ends of the world, including Oyibo people. After spending over two million naira, buying the therapy, it did not work for anybody (those I recommended it to and myself).

I continued with other products recommended by words of mouth. I subsequently did tests. When my doctor saw the results, she was alarmed. “Frank, I am no longer comfortable with these your alternative therapies.” To cut a long story short, I sorted out the problem in a hospital. It was expensive, but problem solved. Let me quickly add that I still believe firmly in African medicine and therapies, but my experience is a full topic for another day.

Most of the people who sell drugs and medical solutions online play on people’s desperation and gullibility. The solutions they offer are mainly for medical issues people desperately want to cure/solve: infertility, erectile dysfunction, low libido and low sperm count; arthritis, high blood pressure, diabetes, prostate enlargement, amongst others and outlandish claims like cure for cancer and HIV AIDS.

Let me start with the last two. There is no cure for cancer other than the medical procedure we know. It is important that cancer is detected early. The patient undergoes surgery to remove the cancerous parts. Then the patient undergoes radiotherapy, chemotherapy and other medical treatments. The doctors know better. I am just a writer.

Any other person who claims to have a cure other than this should come forward. There are cancer centres all over Nigeria. You will get more than enough patients to cure their cancer. If you cannot step forward, you are a fraudster. Also, please spare me the talk about miracle healing. The healers know the hospitals and centres where their miracles are needed. They should go there.

The same applies to HIV AIDS. It is no longer the killer it used to be. There are countless people living very normal life with the HIV. Some have even married and have children who are HIV-free. It is through the same orthodox medicine we all know. All others who claim to have alternative cure should also come forward and prove it. If you are not willing to come out to spread that your joy, you are also a fraudster.

Doctors say there is no permanent cure for arthritis, rheumatism, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc., but they can be managed with treatment and lifestyle changes. Those who claim to have permanent cures should also come forward.

Orthodox medicine can be used to take care of prostate enlargement. Some people have also vouched for the efficacy of traditional therapies. I am sure there are, but I don’t know any that I can vouch for. But consistent consumption of tomatoes remains very effective in preventing prostate enlargement (Natural prostate remedies – Francis Ewherido | TheNewsGuru). It is preventive not a treatment/cure. Once the prostate is enlarged to a certain point, you go for treatment, not only consumption of tomatoes anymore.

Another common product advertised on social media are those for penis enlargement. I have written about three articles on the penis previously. No more comments, but for me, worrying about the size of your penis is what the Urhobos call okamuka (much ado about nothing). The Asians have one of the smallest penises in the world, yet it is the most populated continent. As for the relationship between the size of penis and the pleasure it gives to women, why don’t you ask your wife or the women who make you worry about your penis size? At best, it is different strokes for different folks and how the workman uses his tools.

My final advice: Have a personal/family physician you can consult. If you do not have the resources for private medical facilities, patronize government hospitals. Government (federal and states) has invested reasonable money in the medical sector. They have the equipment and the personnel though the work ethic of the medical personnel is still very poor. There are effective alternative medical solutions, but do your due diligence. There are too many fraudsters. Beware!

It is mischief – Pastor Adefarasin reacts over viral firearm video

Senior Pastor and Founder of House on the Rock church headquartered in Lagos State, Paul Adefarasin has reacted over a viral video of him supposedly bearing a firearm.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Pastor Adefarasin to have said what he was holding as captured in the viral video was not a weapon.

In a statement released on Saturday via social media, Adefarasin denied the allegation and described the viral video as mischief.

“You might be aware of a video which has been circulating on social media showing me in what some have misunderstood as brandishing a firearm.

“I want to assure you of this that, that was certainly not a firearm, and at no point did I point such at anyone.

“We understand the concern that this accusation may have caused,” Adefarasin wrote while noting that he would further address the matter on Sunday.

Recall that a content creator shared a video of the House on the Rock pastor on social media on Friday.

Pastor Adefarasin was captured in the 10-second video driving a black Range Rover. He slowed near the content creator, and the tinted window rolled down.

The content creator was heard greeting Adefarasin, but the pastor appears to respond sternly while holding what some viewers interpreted as a pistol.

The content creator quickly apologised as Adefarasin drove off.

The video started trending on social media after the Lagos-based content creator known for filming luxury and exotic cars posted it.

The content creator claimed the 62-year-old clergyman pointed a gun at him.

  • Ministry warns public against fake social media accounts

Ministry warns public against fake social media accounts

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday warned against the use of social media accounts by unscrupulous individuals spreading false information about its officials.

The ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, issued the warning in Abuja following the creation of a fake Facebook account in the name of Permanent Secretary, Amb. Dunoma Ahmed.

Ebienfa said, “This fraudulent account is being used to spread false information, promise contracts, solicit help, and offer enticing rewards to unsuspecting members of the public.

“The Ministry firmly disassociates itself from this impersonation and urges the public to disregard any messages from the fake account, which is not an official channel.

“It is important to clarify that the Permanent Secretary does not operate or own any social media account.”

He advised the public not to engage with individuals or groups behind such fraudulent schemes, as they are deceptive and harmful.

According to him, the ministry is working closely with security agencies and Meta, Facebook’s parent company, to investigate and shut down the fake account.

Ebienfa reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to transparency, integrity, and protecting citizens from fraudulent activities across all platforms.

  • Information Minister warns against abuse of social media

Information Minister warns against abuse of social media

Alhaji Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, has urged Nigerian youths to use social media responsibly and avoid the spread of misinformation and unverified contents.

Idris made the call on Saturday in Abuja at the Nigerian Tulip International Colleges (NTIC) Abuja Youth programme with the theme: “Passion”.

The minister canvassed responsible use of social media, warning youths about the dangers of spreading unverified contents.

He said that social media should be used for unification rather than destruction.

“If you don’t believe a message, please don’t share. If you share, you should know you are either advancing the world or leading it to destruction, ” he said.

Idris narrated how his youthful passion for broadcast  drove him to success.

”I didn’t get the opportunity at age 16, but now I have achieved a lot in the media industry.

“Today, I have found a new dream and I’m actualising it; so, it is not too late to start pursuing your passion, ” he said.

According to him, the Bola Tinubu administration is combating misinformation by promoting media literacy.

“We are working with UNESCO to clean the information communication ecosystem to rid the world of fake news.

“Nigeria has won the UNESCO Category 2 Media Information Literacy Centre in Abuja.

“In November, the whole world will look to Nigeria for the first media and information literacy institution of its kind,” Idris said.

The Managing Director of NTIC, Feyzullah Bilgin, had praised the impact of the TEDx Abuja Youth programme.

Bilgin explained that the programme was to inform and empower individuals and young minds through powerful ideas.

“All our speakers and presentations got approved into the TEDx global YouTube page which has around 42 million followers,” he said.

Bilgin said that this year’s theme, “Passion,” was focused on the driving forces behind great ideas.

He reaffirmed the school’s commitment to nurturing creativity and innovation in students.

  • Lamborghini fever hits social media as socialites flaunt new rides

Lamborghini fever hits social media as socialites flaunt new rides

Social media platforms have been abuzz with visuals and pictures of socialites flaunting their newly acquired luxury cars, specifically the Lamborghini Urus.

Former Big Brother housemate, Mercy Eke, took to social media to unveil her new Lamborghini, decorated with balloons, and expressed her excitement over the latest acquisition.

“When your name matches your lifestyle, Lamborghini,” she wrote, showcasing her new N340 million worth orange and black Lamborghini Urus.

Her colleagues and friends congratulated her on the new acquisition, but the post also sparked a mix of reactions, with many questioning how she could afford such a luxury car, especially in the current economic climate.

In a similar vein, socialite Sophie Egbueje, also unveiled her new Lamborghini, amidst public disputes with Grammy-winning artiste, Burna Boy.

Sophie had accused Burna Boy of promising to buy her the luxury vehicle but failed to fulfill his promise.

In a leaked audio recording, Sophie was heard accusing Burna Boy of having a one-night stand with her and failing to keep his promise.

Days later, Sophie confirmed that she had bought herself the Lamborghini, taking to Instagram to write, “My baby is here.”

The post sparked controversy, with many questioning what Sophie does for a living and how she was able to acquire the luxury car.

The debate highlights the ongoing conversation about wealth and luxury in Nigeria, particularly among socialites and celebrities.

Reactions poured in on social media, with some congratulating the socialites on their new acquisitions, while others expressed skepticism and criticism.

Solomon Buchi tweeted, “If you simply obey God and stay away from fornication, you will not only avoid STDs, you will also avoid Lambo heartbreaks and needless media scandals.”

Abas Abas tweeted, “Nothing beats hard work! Congrats to Sophia and Mercy on their new Lambo. Big girls’ role.”

Sam Cliff wrote, “As Sophia has bought herself a Lambo, ladies take note: start spoiling yourselves and let some of these men breathe.”

Olumidekofi commented on Instagram, “Sophia proved that she has vex money and decided to scatter the internet with it. Lambo baby!

What a man can do, a woman can do better”.

  • Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp impeding efforts to combat polio – FG

Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp impeding efforts to combat polio – FG

The federal government (FG) has lamented that false narratives being spread via social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp are contributing to lower vaccine acceptance in some communities for polio eradication.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja while speaking at a high-level meeting with the Polio Oversight Board development partners and government officials.

Prof. Pate also disclosed that despite the fact that Nigeria has spent over 500 million dollars on polio eradication efforts, some challenges remain in fully eliminating circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV).

Pate also expressed concern over the financial burden of polio eradication, saying that in spite of strong political commitment, Nigeria  had continued to face operational challenges  hindering  complete eradication of poliovirus.

“Key among these challenges is false vaccination records, with one in four children marked as vaccinated despite not receiving the vaccine,” he said.

Pate also identified as a challenge, weak supervision leading to inconsistencies in immunisation coverage. He added that poor micro-planning left vulnerable children unvaccinated, particularly in high-risk communities.

To tackle these, he said that the government has activated a Polio Task Force under the National Economic Council (NEC) chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

He said that it had  mandated state governors to take full ownership of polio eradication efforts at the local government level.

The minister said that strict accountability must be enforced at all levels to ensure that Nigeria would not reverse its gains in polio eradication.

He said that Nigeria was working to integrate polio eradication into routine primary healthcare services.

“This aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises expanding primary healthcare infrastructure and improving service delivery, retraining 120,000 frontline health workers, with 60,000 already trained, and promoting local vaccine production.”

Pate said that the agenda also priorised strengthening surveillance and outbreak response mechanisms to detect and respond swiftly to poliovirus cases.

The minister also identified misinformation and vaccine hesitancy as major threats to polio eradication.

He called on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp to take decisive actions against false vaccine narratives which, he said,  had contributed to lower vaccine acceptance in some communities.

“We are engaging traditional and religious leaders to counter misinformation, but digital platforms must do more to curb false narratives about vaccines,” he said.

While Nigeria was declared free of wild poliovirus in 2020, challenges have persisted with circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV).

Volunteer Community Mobilisers (VCMs) have been instrumental in raising awareness and countering misinformation about polio vaccination.

In northern Nigeria, VCMs engage directly with families, addressing concerns and emphasising the importance of immunisation.

Their efforts have significantly contributed to increased vaccine acceptance.

The Federal Government, in collaboration with global partners, aims to interrupt all poliovirus transmission, including cVDPV, by the end of 2026.

This ambitious goal requires enhanced routine immunisation, swift outbreak responses, and robust surveillance systems to monitor and address new cases promptly.

  • Edo guber dispute: Social media partisan reporting shapes narrative – By Ehichioya Ezomon

Edo guber dispute: Social media partisan reporting shapes narrative – By Ehichioya Ezomon

In a week’s time, on Monday, March 3, 2025, the three-man Election Petitions Tribunal (EPT) looking into alleged malpractice at the September 21, 2024, governorship election in Edo State, will preside over the adoption of written addresses by Petitioners and Respondents to the dispute.

At the close of the hearing proper on February 13, the Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Wilfred Kpochi (with him Justices A.B. Yusuf and A.A. Adewole), gave seven days to the Respondents, and five days to the Plaintiffs to write their addresses, and extra three days each to file their written addresses, for adoption on March 3. The days started counting from Friday, February 14.

The tribunal – which began hearing on January 21, and closed its sitting on January 24 in Benin City, Edo State capital city, over reported security reasons, and relocated to Abuja on January 28 – considers petitions filed by seven political parties against the declaration of Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of the governorship.

In the results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on September 22, 2024, Okpebholo (APC, Edo Central) scored 291,667 votes (about 51.1%) to defeat the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr Asue Ighodalo (a Lagos-based Lawyer and business magnate), who polled 247,274 votes (about 43.3%).

The PDP, however, claims that those figures were manipulated against Ighodalo, arguing that barring alleged massive anomalies at the poll, Ighodalo defeated Okpebholo, and should be declared as Governor of Edo State.

So, the public focus is on PDP/Ighodalo, who, in their petition, marked, EPT/ED/GOV/02/2024, allege irregularities in the total number of votes cast in many polling units, which reportedly exceeded accredited voter-count recorded by the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) that the INEC deployed for the ballot.

Meanwhile, coming from the tribunal is somewhat out-of-place reporting – well, is there anything like that – on social media that’s at best sensational, and at worst partisan, slanted to indicate that APC/Okpebholo are no hopers, regarding the tons of documentary evidence presented by PDP/Ighodalo, and testified to by their witnesses as a true reflection of the poll.

From the onset of the hearing, social media reports have talked about: “Stunning and explosive revelations… quantum of evidence tendered so far… proceedings intensifying political tension in Edo State… palpable fear in the APC leadership… Oshiomhole storms out in fury… revelations stir intense reactions, and shockwaves in the APC camp… analysts describe allegations as a potential game-changer… all not well with the Edo State APC… Governor Okpebholo feeling the heat… as Ighodalo gains ground… APC leaders hold frantic meetings at Government House… to stem onslaught against the party at the Tribunal.”

Thus, from January 21 to February 13 – the period covered herein (with a bit of lull from Monday, February 3 after the Plaintiffs closed their case) – the bombastic headlines, and the lead paragraphs or parts thereof were an obviously-partisan reporting for PDP/Ighodalo. Check below:

    • ‘Breaking: 2,840 PDP votes unlawfully excluded by INEC, witness testifies’ (January 21, 2025) • ‘Edo Tribunal: APC weighs options as tribunal continues to receive massive evidence of electoral fraud’ (January 21, 2025) • ‘APC lawyers cut short cross-examination as PDP’s witness exposes rigging in Okpebholo’s LGA’ (January 23, 2025) • ‘Esan North East collation agent narrates how INEC officials altered polling unit results for APC’ (January 23, 2025).

    • ‘Edo Gov Poll: Tribunal berates PDP for failure to produce witnesses, as PDP queries 765 of 4,519 polling units in Edo State’ (January 28, 2025) • ‘PDP witness stuns tribunal with explosive testimony, Oshiomhole storms out in fury as Ighodalo gains ground’ (January 31, 2025) • ‘Edo Tribunal: Fear of INEC’s BVAS grips Okpebholo, Oshiomhole’ (February 1, 2025) • ‘Edo Tribunal: Expert witness demolishes APC, Governor Okpebholo as tribunal resumes in Abuja’.

    • ‘Witness proves with mathematical accuracy that Asue Ighodalo won the election by total number of valid votes cast’ • ‘Under cross-examination, witness establishes evidence of over-voting, non-serialisation and incorrect computation of scores by INEC.’ • ‘Edo Election Petition Tribunal: APC closes defence amid over-voting admissions, widespread non-compliance with Electoral Act (February 13, 2025).

Now, let’s sample a full reporting on social media on the tribunal proceedings that’s unabashedly, sensational, partisan, unnuanced and unbalanced, reflecting only one side to the electoral dispute, as follows:

“Over the week, it has been a floodgate of expositions of electoral fraud at the tribunal. On 21st January, a PDP witness and LGA collation agent revealed and tendered copious evidence on how INEC unlawfully excluded a total of 2,840 votes scored by the PDP candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, in 76 polling units (PUs) in Ward 2, Ikpoba Okha LGA.

“Similarly, the LGA collation agent for Akoko Edo LGA disclosed that there was over-voting in 8 polling units, as INEC BVAS report of accreditation and other certified documents showed clearly that the total number of votes cast and declared by INEC in result sheets Forms EC8A are in excess of the total accreditation figures captured by BVAS in 8 polling units in Akoko Edo LGA.

“In the same vein, the LGA collation agent for Owan West LGA led documentary evidence in proof to show how INEC breached its own Manual and Guidelines, including the Electoral Act 2022, by their failure and inability to record serial numbers and particulars of all sensitive materials deployed for the guber election in seven (7) polling units in Owan West LGA.
“The failure of INEC to record the serial numbers and other particulars of result sheets, as shown through forms EC25B and EC40A, renders the election in the affected polling units invalid, for failure to comply with the requirement of prior recording.
“Fresh facts emanating from proceedings have now laid bare more reasons why the APC was desperate to prevent PDP witnesses to testify at the Tribunal with their evidence. This is as it has been shown clearly that Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa only won his ward through fraudulent means.

“During his testimony at the Tribunal, the LGA collation agent for Ovia South West LGA, relying on INEC certified CTC copies of result sheets Form EC8A-C in the area, original IReV results, CTCs of BVAS accreditation report, among other document extracts, was able to show that the total number of votes cast far exceeded the total number of accredited voters in many polling units in Idahosa’s Ward 2 and Ovia South West LGA. The Electoral Act states clearly that any unit where over-voting is established will be cancelled.

“These developments and the quantum of evidence tendered so far have struck palpable fear such that APC leaders are now holding frantic meetings at Government House, to find a way forward to stem the onslaught against the APC at the Tribunal.

“Apparently, all efforts by APC chairman and its leadership to intimidate and prevent witnesses from testifying and the evidence from being tendered have proved abortive, hence the sense of despair within the fold.

“As the proceedings continue, with Edo people and Nigerians at large watching with keen interest, it is clear that thuggery and brigandage can never take the place of solid evidence which is now unravelling before the court.”

And now, let’s sample a counter-reporting – not on social media but based on the same tribunal proceedings – that’s not wholesale sensational, partisan and one-sided, but nuanced and balanced, reflecting both sides to the electoral dispute, as follows:

“On Tuesday, January 21, at the resumed hearing of PDP/Ighodalo’s petition, the PDP collation agent for Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area (LGA) in Edo South senatorial district, who appeared as first Prosecution Witness (PW1), alleged that INEC unlawfully excluded 2,840 votes scored by Ighodalo in 76 polling units in Ward 2 of Ikpoba Okha.

“To substantiate claims of deliberate vote exclusion, the witness submitted Certified True Copies (CTCs) of result sheets obtained from INEC’s IReV portal and duplicate copies of Form EC8A issued to polling unit agents, stating that, ‘The results from 76 polling units in Ward 2, Ikpoba Okha LGA, were duly declared and uploaded on IReV but were unlawfully excluded by INEC at the LGA and state collation levels.’

“The witness, who explained that he examined duplicates provided to polling agents and verified the scores with INEC’s CTCs, noted that the ‘manipulation of the process’ deprived the PDP of rightful votes during collation for Forms EC8B, EC8C, and EC8D.

“Cross-examined by Kanu Agabi (SAN), counsel for the Respondents, the witness maintained his position, emphasised his active role as a collation agent, and tendered his identification tags, BVAS accreditation records, and IReV-certified documents, as exhibits, to support his testimony.

“Similarly on the same day, PDP’s second Prosecution Witness (PW2), who served as the collation agent for Akoko Edo Local Government Area of Edo North, cast doubt on the credibility of results declared in the LGA, alleging incorrect vote collation in favour of the APC in 48 polling units in Wards 4 and 9 of the LGA.

“Stating that evidence of over-voting in eight polling units showed that votes declared by INEC exceeded BVAS-accredited figures, the witness added that, ‘5,724 votes were overstated for the APC, while 2,171 votes were unjustly deducted from the PDP’ – indicating that the results declared by INEC on Forms EC8A ‘were significantly higher than accreditation figures in 8 polling units.’

“Besides, the witness claimed that INEC failed to record mandatory details, ‘including serial numbers of sensitive materials and BVAS machines, in 17 polling units,’ arguing that this oversight ‘rendered the results from these units null and void under the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended).’

“Cross-examined, the witness maintained his role as the collation agent, affirmed his thorough review of INEC’s documents, including Results Forms EC8A, EC8B, EC8C, and EC8D, stood by his assertion that ‘the discrepancies in results were glaring,’ and demanded accountability.

“Despite strong objections from counsel to the Respondents, including Kanu Agabi (SAN) and Oyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), the tribunal, as it did after the testimony by PW1, admitted all documentary evidence by PW2, marking them as Exhibits Pn 1-46, and adjourned sitting to the next day (Wednesday, January 22, 2025).”

In summary, socical media reporting of the main proceedings, which the three-man tribunal closed on Thursday, February 13, was salaciously-slanted, portraying PDP/Ighodalo to’ve rubbished and made a mincemeat of INEC’s declaration of Okpebholo as the poll winner, thus shaping such a narrative in the polity.

On that account, it bears repeating that, if election petitions – and elections – are won on social media, PDP/Ighodalo would’ve breasted the tape even before filing their petition at the Election Petitions Tribunal!

    South Sudan suspends social media

South Sudan has directed telecom companies to block social media for three months, citing concerns over graphic content related to the ongoing violence against South Sudanese in neighboring Sudan.

As the country’s communications industry regulator, the National Communication Authority (NCA) ordered all internet service providers and telecom operators to block access to all social media accounts, effective from Midnight

“This is culminating from the recent upheaval in Sudan that has exposed the South Sudanese population to unprecedented levels of extreme violence through social media posts,” NCA Director General Napoleon Adok Gai said in a statement issued in Juba, the capital of South Sudan.

Gai said the South Sudanese refugees in Wad Madani city of Sudan were targeted by violent attacks, which resulted in the deaths of women and children.

These incidents were subsequently captured in videos and shared on social media without regard.

Several South Sudanese have been angered by footage from Sudan that showed killings of South Sudanese nationals by the Sudan Armed Forces on Jan. 11, in Wad Madani.

The footage sparked two days of deadly violent riots, particularly in Juba, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, and Warrap State.

The angry South Sudanese rioters attacked Sudanese-owned shops and looted goods, and also vandalised them, in revenge for the killings of South Sudanese nationals.

The NCA said the social media ban is necessary to prevent the spread of violent content, particularly videos depicting brutal attacks on women and children which were widely shared on social media sites.

Gai said the blockage of social media will last for a minimum of 30 days and the directives may be lifted as soon as the situation is contained.

The contents depicted violate the country’s local laws and pose a significant threat to public safety and mental health, especially to vulnerable groups, the official added.

Telecom operators in South Sudan, including MTN, Zain, and Digitel, informed their subscribers that access to social media services through their internet connections has been suspended following the directive from the NCA.

However, the drastic decision by the telecom industry regulator has been roundly condemned by some South Sudanese, who viewed the move as a violation of citizens’ rights.

Yar Mary, an online business owner, said the social media ban will affect communications between her and her clients.

“This suspension of the social media sites will affect my business very badly, most communications with my clients are through social media, especially WhatsApp, and therefore if this ban continues, my business will collapse,” she said.
