Arsenal legend, Henry Thierry quits social media today, gives reasons

Former France international Thierry Henry says he hopes his decision to step away from social media will inspire others to stand up against racist abuse and bullying online.

The ex-Arsenal and Barcelona star, who won the World Cup with France in 1998, announced on Friday that he would be quitting his social media accounts until tech companies started doing more to hold users accountable for their actions.
In April 2019, professional footballers in England and Wales boycotted social media for 24 hours, but Henry is arguably the most prominent name within the sport to implement a longer-term boycott.
His decision follows a recent spate of online racist abuse targeting Black soccer players.
Rangers player Kemar Roofe and Manchester United duo Anthony
Martial and Fred are just some of the latest players to receive racist messages on their social media accounts.
Henry, who has 2.3 million followers on Twitter, told CNN’s Darren Lewis that although social media has many benefits, some users deployed their posts in a much more sinister way.
“It’s not a safe place and it’s not a safe environment,” Henry told CNN Sport. “I wanted to take a stand on saying that it is an important tool that unfortunately some people turn into a weapon because they can hide behind a fake account.”
He added: “I’m not saying it’s not good to have social media, I’m just trying to say that it has to be a safe place.”
“Basically, I did what I felt and I hope it can inspire people to do the same thing if they feel the same way.”
  • Trump plans social media return with his own platform

Trump plans social media return with his own platform

Former U.S. President Donald Trump plans to launch his own social media platform in two to three months, one of his senior advisers told Fox News on Sunday.

Trump was suspended from Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

Jason Miller, a spokesman for Trump’s 2020 campaign, told the network that Trump would re-enter the social media space with a new platform of his own that would “completely redefine the game.”

Miller provided no further details and no comment was immediately available from officials with the Trump Organisation.

Twitter last week said it would seek public input on when and how it should ban world leaders, saying it was reviewing policy and considering whether the leaders should be held to the same rules as other users.

Twitter, Facebook and others have been under scrutiny for the way they handle accounts of politicians and government officials after their ban of Trump for inciting violence.

Facebook, which indefinitely suspended Trump in January, has asked its independent oversight board to decide whether the ban should stand.

Social media abuse brought Man Utd chief to tears

Former Anderlecht sporting director Michael Verschueren has revealed social media abuse has brought Manchester United vice-chairman Ed Woodward to tears.

Towards the end of 2019, both Woodward and the Glazers were on the receiving end of strong abuse from the terraces – with things coming to a head in a 2-0 defeat to Burnley.

Verschueren has now claimed that Woodward once had ‘tears in his eyes’ when he saw posts online.

He told HLN: “Two years ago, I was accompanied by Ed Woodward, the CEO of Manchester United, who was going through a sporting slump at the time.

“He showed me tweets from supporters: ‘Look Michael, how cruel the fans can be’ – the tears were in his eyes.

“Today Manchester United are the leader [second] in the Premier League.

“I messaged Woodward a few days ago to congratulate him. He texted me back saying, ‘You know how tough the journey was’.

“Well, that’s my message to our supporters: the journey will not be easy in the coming years, but Anderlecht will be back.”

  • Ex-U.S. President, Donald Trump returns to social media

Ex-U.S. President, Donald Trump returns to social media

Immediate past United States President, Donald Trump has returned to the social media space after a hard hit by the Silicon valley tech giant regulators.

In his first post to the site since 8 January, Trump uploaded his lawyer’s response to demands he testifies at his second impeachment hearing next week.

Trump had resorted to releasing statements from the Office of the Former President after he and his campaign presence was scrubbed from the internet by Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Reddit, Snapchat, Twitch, Shopify, Stripe, and YouTube, among others.

While his return to social media was just a repost his lawyers’ letter, the phrasing carried the ex-president’s characteristic defiance, according to the Independent.

“We are in receipt of your latest public relations stunt,” attorneys David Schoen and Bruce Castor Jr wrote.

“Your letter only confirms what is known to everyone: you cannot prove your allegations against the 45th President of the United States, who is now a private citizen. The use of our Constitution to bring a purported impeachment proceeding is much too serious to try to play these games.”

Trump’s attorneys were responding to requests from Congressman Jamie Raskin that the ex-president appear before or during the trial, subject to cross-examination, pointing to the testimonies of former presidents Gerald Ford and Bill Clinton while in office.

Don’t feel pressured by lies you see on social media-Omotola Jalade

Nollywood actress, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has urged her fans not to be pressured by the lies they see on social media.

The movie star made this known via her Twitter page on Wednesday, January 13, 2021

“In this age and time of intense pressure especially From Social media. Find the time to Log off. Have REAL life connections,” she tweeted.

“Don’t feel pressured by the many lies you see, your worries are easier than that of many you may admire. Hang in there and Be patient with yourself.”

TheNewsGuru recalls that this is not the first time a celebrity will be advising their followers on social media about not getting confused with the lifestyle people showcase on social media.

Years back, Joke Silva urged her fans not to be moved by what they see on social media.

According to her: “Don’t be deceived by what goes on on social media. Obviously, there is something else such actors are doing, perhaps other businesses to shore up their income. The reality is that on the earning capacity of an actor in Nigeria, you cannot have that sort of lifestyle in this economy. Yes, part of our industry is to have glamour but also the other part is to have reality,” she said.
