How people excessively used social media during the COVID-19 lockdown

Excessive social media use during the pandemic is a predictor of symptoms of depression and secondary trauma, a new study by researchers at Pennsylvania State University and Jinan University in Guangzhou, China, suggests.

The study, published in Computers in Human Behaviour, surveyed 320 participants living in Wuhan about how they accessed and shared health information with friends, family members, and colleagues over WeChat, China’s most popular social media app.

They also used a stress scale to measure anxiety and depression by asking participants to rate statements such as “I felt that life was meaningless’’ and “I had disturbing dreams about the coronavirus epidemic.”

Bu Zhong, a journalism professor at Penn State and a co-author of the study, said that the team began looking into the effects of social media use on people’s mental health right after Wuhan was locked down to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

“We didn’t expect that this would become a global pandemic,” he said.

“We were just thinking that we could reveal some invisible harm caused by the outbreak.

“In China’s situation, local media was not reporting on COVID-19. If you just read the local newspaper and watched television, you didn’t get information about the virus.

“This made people extremely stressed, and they began relying overwhelmingly on social media.”

Previous research has shown that more people are relying on social media to find and share health information during times of crisis.

The Harris Poll found that between late March and early May, 46 to 51 per cent of American adults reported using social media more often than before the pandemic.

The new study found that more than half of participants, none of whom reported any traumatic or depressive disorders before the pandemic, experienced some level of depression.

Nearly 20 per cent of participants reported experiencing a moderate to severe level of depression, and slightly more than 20 per cent reported moderate to severe levels of secondary trauma, which can occur when people hear about the traumatic experiences of others.

Based on the researchers’ model, excessive use of social media was linked with more severe levels of depression and secondary trauma.

At the same time, Zhong said that it’s important to understand how all types of social media, including platforms like Facebook and Twitter, can help people during a health crisis.

“I think when disasters find us, we tend to go to our social networks more to get help and reach out. It’s human nature. We don’t want people to think social media is bad,’’ he said.

“We just want them to know there is a balance, and when you go over the threshold, like checking every five or 10 minutes, it can bring even more stress to yourself.”

Researchers said that it was possible that people who consumed more health information on WeChat attached excessive importance to the content, experiencing more depression and secondary trauma than those who used the platform less.

In response, they recommend social media breaks during a stressful health crisis like the pandemic.

“We should not blame social media. We should just pay attention to how we are using it,’’ Zhong said.

  • Payet mocks PSG on social media for losing UCL finals

Former West Ham player Dimitri Payet has thrown a jibe at PSG for losing in the Champion’s League final to Bayern Munich.

Payet, who plays for Marseille, in the spirit of rivalry took to Twitter to mock the Ligue 1 champions.

Marseille fans also celebrated on the streets of France, after seeing fierce domestic rivals lose on the biggest stage.

With PSG loss to Bayern on Sunday, Marseille remain the only French club to have been European champions, winning the inaugural reimagined Champions League in 1992/93.

Payet tweeted a video showing a PSG badge appearing to have a star over it to signify a Champions League title. The attacking midfielder then wagged his finger over it before pulling the PSG logo away to reveal a Marseille shirt beneath.

He posted the video with the caption ‘One history, one club, one city. Forever the first.’

However, PSG has dominated the French League for almost a decade as they have been titled champions in the last eight Ligue 1 titles. Before this season, the last time they came close to a champions league final was in 1994/95 where they crashed out in the semi-finals.

PSG in the last seven years (2012/2013 to 2018/2019) had not progressed beyond the quarter-finals with teams like Barcelona and Manchester United completing ‘historic comebacks’ against them.

  • Ekiti LG chairman floods social media with Fayemi’s 2023 presidential campaign posters

Ekiti LG chairman floods social media with Fayemi’s 2023 presidential campaign posters

The Chairman of Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti State, Mr Femi Ayodele has released the 2023 presidential campaign posters of Governor Kayode Fayemi on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) on social media.

The posters sponsored by the LG chairman: “Support His Excellency Dr. John Kayode Fayemi for President 2023.”

Confirming the development, Mr Ayodele, said he did the posters to show his unalloyed and uncompromising loyalty to Governor Fayemi against insinuation that he was working against him.

He said the governor is fit enough for the exalted office considering his array of outstanding credentials, administrative shrewdness and political acumen.

He added that Fayemi’s commitment, resourcefulness and pedigree puts him in good stead to lead Nigeria in the next political dispensation.

But when asked about the development, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Fayemi, Yinka Oyebode said his principal did not know anything about the posters.

Oyebode, who said the sponsor was only expressing a mere personal opinion, urged the public to discountenance the campaign posters.

He added that his principal was focused on governance and how to uplift Ekiti in terms of infrastructural, economic and social development instead of issues around 2023 elections.

The Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication to Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, Segun Dipe, had earlier on May 5 denied that Fayemi was nursing a presidential ambition towards 2023.

The governor’s aide said such claim was misrepresentation of Fayemi’s conduct and personality.

  • The story about Chinese company, Inner Galaxy Steel Company and the danger of social media

The story about Chinese company, Inner Galaxy Steel Company and the danger of social media

In the past few days, various social media platforms have been awash with stories about the Inner Galaxy Steel Company Group with their associated companies located in Obehie, Ukwa West LGA, Abia State.

The stories which originated from a social media account called 99% OPPRESSED (Wikileaks) and @Truthfully83, which were obviously opened for the purpose, quickly went viral and have led to massive public outcry. To that extent, the purpose has been achieved within a couple of days.

Despite that there has been no formal complaint or petition against the company to any authority in Nigeria, the weight of the allegations making the rounds was such that governments in the land could not just ignore them.

For instance, the Abia State Government felt compelled by the public outcry and agitation, to send a fact-finding team to the company premises on Thursday, August 13, 2020. The same day, the Federal Government also sent another inter-agency investigation team led by the FCCPC to the Company premises to find out what is going on there. Everyone is looking forward to their reports.

When I first read the allegations, I had to rub my eyes several times because this is a Company I know very well and have visited many times for a number of diverse reasons. This company is arguably the biggest in the entire South East and their premises is in fact a mini-City of its own.

I went back there on Thursday, August 13, to make enquiries having read these fantastic stories on the internet and I happen to have been on the premises when the Federal and State investigation teams arrived separately.
One thing that has become evident by these events is that some human beings love to believe the very worst of every other person, individual or corporate, especially if they already believe that the entity in question is a villain.

Another one is the power of social media for good and for evil. And that is why we must take a deep breath and actually examine some those allegations. Only then would the truthfulness or otherwise of some of the claims dawn on us.

Now to some of the notable ones among the allegations:

That Inner Galaxy held Nigerian workers in slavery on their premises, AGAINST THEIR WILL and in inhuman conditions. Could this be true? Well, what I gathered from my investigation is that when Covid-19 started early this year, and factories in some other parts of the world were shut down because they became “super-spreaders” of the virus, Inner Galaxy took proactive steps to curtail spread of the virus in its premises. The first issue was that of the closure of interstate borders. This company is located on the border between Rivers and Abia States and many of the workers come to work from Rivers State, mainly living in Obigbo. Those workers, numbering in hundreds were at risk of not being able to come to work because the Rivers State borders were about to be closed. Also, the company imposed very rigorous COVID-19 safety protocols within the premises of the company, issuing one mask every day to each worker and ensuring they are worn properly, providing over 55 hand-washing/sanitizer stations in the premises, etc, but the challenge was that when staff leave and go home where those protocols are not in place, they could contract the virus, bring it to the complex and spread it.
Of course, in one factory in Ogun State, 104 staff tested positive to Covid-19 in one day. So, the concern was not baseless.

Again, the company was at this time working at less than half-capacity as the closure of inter-state borders meant that many suppliers and other customers vital to the operations of the company could not have access. The company called a meeting of the staff and asked for those willing to stay in the company premises until the Covid-19 crises is over or reduced. Those who opted to do so would be housed in temporary accommodation to be hastily set up while a much better accommodation would be built for future purposes. Two buildings for temporary accommodations are being constructed; one has reached 90% completion while the second is at 65% completion.

Those workers who said they could not stay away from their families for an indeterminate period were furloughed in accordance with best practices to be reabsorbed as soon as the COVID-19 crisis is over and operations return to normal BUT ALL OF THEM are being paid N15K (fifteen thousand naira) a month each while at home and not working. Those who opted to remain in the premises are being paid substantial bonuses in addition to their full salaries and many have already left the temporary, hastily arranged accommodation back to their homes, as things have started normalizing but with strict instructions to strictly abide by Covid-19 safety protocols so as not to bring the virus to the complex from home.

Another allegation that caught my attention was that Nigerians are being held on the company premises against their will. I also found out that not just untrue but impossible, as a visit to the Inner Galaxy City would show to anyone. This company was established in Abia over five years ago. The complex is massive and a mini-City. While there are over 2000 workers in the employment of the company, the Chinese there are just about 20. The Nigerians there are mainly young men and women. One begins to wonder how can these few Chinese people would hold hundreds of Nigerian workers against their will? Which number of security men can intimidate these number of workers to the extent alleged? Yes, may say that economic circumstances may make a man to bend his neck, but when it gets to breaking point, men would be men. The Complex does not even have gate. It is free access and people can go in and out at will. It is only the office blocks that have gates.

And now to the allegation of physical abuse of Nigerians by Nigerian security men attached to the company. Of course, as Nigerians we do have our opinions of our security men ( policemen and soldiers) but there are many people of conscience in the security outfits. Without saying much, my enquiries indicate that there is no such collusion between the Chinese firm and the Nigerian security arms to maltreat and brutalize fellow citizens.
Furthermore, at any given time, over 150 trailers are parked in the premises to transport the steel, iron and other products produced there or to supply raw materials. The transportation sector alone has scores of independent drivers, conductors, mechanics, vulcanizers, etc,. from all over the country.

There are hundreds of suppliers, customers, and other independent or semi-independent businesses on the premises such as restaurants, shops, etc to cater for people who come from all over the country for one thing or the other. There are Igbos, Hausas, Yoruba, and all other ethnicities there. Is it possible that these hundreds of other Nigerians who are not staff of the company and are independent will also compromise and keep quiet over the last five years and not say a word when they see their compatriots being turned into slaves?

As indicated earlier, the way this story has gone has shown the power of the social media for good and otherwise. As someone who has an opportunity to verify some of the allegations making the rounds in this matter, what has done for me is to be more circumspect when I read posts on the social media, especially from newly registered accounts or pseudo names. Now, the strong suspicion is that ex staff who were sacked or “mere tools” are behind this. This suspicion is stronger when one realizes that the clamor by those behind it is not for investigation, but that company should be shut down.

But the comforting angle is that the staff there don’t seem perturbed by the high decibel sounds of the social media. Nor the host community where the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives seem to have impressed the people.

In any case, we expect that the nine-man committee set up by Abia State Government and the federal agencies doing the investigation will come out with the truth later. Time and truth will heal all wounds.

Coca-Cola cleans $7 billion off Mark Zuckerberg’s fortune

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder and chief executive officer, has had $7 billion wiped off his fortune after Coca-Cola announced halting all social media advertising for 30 days.

This follows #StopHateforProfit campaign launched on June 19 in the wake of George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police officers and the subsequent worldwide protests.

It was triggered by Facebook’s refusal to remove a post by President Donald Trump, which threatened the protesters with violence. Trump wrote in his post, “when the looting starts, the shooting starts” and also called the demonstrators “thugs”.

“There is no place for racism in the world and there is no place for racism on social media. The Coca-Cola Company will pause paid advertising on all social media platforms globally for at least 30 days.

“We will take this time to reassess our advertising policies to determine whether revisions are needed. We also expect greater accountability and transparency from our social media partners,” James Quincey, Chairman and CEO of The Coca-Cola Company

Zuckerberg’s net wealth is down by $7.21 billion as of Saturday, while Facebook’s share price dropped more than 8% at the close of Friday trading, as the ad boycott snowballs.

Coca-Cola is the latest brand to back the #StopHateforProfit campaign by American civil rights groups.

Big corporations, including Unilever, Verizon and many others have over the last week, either paused or halted their advertising with Facebook and other social media platforms as a result.

Meanwhile, the pressure appears to be working as late on Friday, Zuckerberg announced the company will now label “newsworthy” posts from politicians that break its rules on hate speech or violent speech.

Alleged NDDC fraud: Delta senator threatens to sue Buhari’s aide for calling him ‘thief’ on social media

Senator representing Delta North senatorial district in the senate, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi has threatened to drag the Senior Special Assistant to the President Muhammadu Buhari on New Media, Mrs Lauretta Onochie, to Court over alleged libel.

Nwaoboshi’s threat came even as the Senate is said to have directed security agencies to probe an alleged forged by the Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, seeking the investigation of the Minister of the Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

Nwaoboshi, in a letter to Onochie through his lawyer, gave her a 48 hour ultimatum to retract all disparaging comments allegedly made against him as regards contracts from NDDC or face imminent litigation.

The solicitors who are Bwala and Co of the Crystal Chambers and Daniel Hassan Bwala of Lincoln’s Inn London, in the letter dated 9th June, 2020 and addressed to Mrs. Onochie, listed all her alleged infractions against Nwaoboshi.

The letter titled: Defamatory Publication by you against the Chairman, Senate Committee on Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, reads in part: “We are Solicitors to Sen. Peter Nwaoboshi, Chairman Senate Committee on NDDC, hereinafter called “Our Client”, on whose instructions we write you on the relative above.

“Our Client informed us and we verily believe him that on the 8th day of June 2020, you posted/published a defamatory article on your Facebook page (Lauretta Onochie) against our client captioned “NDDC- THE CHICKEN COMES HOME TO ROOST” appearing on your page as follows, amongst other:

“I was at an event in his home town when he spoke in our Anioma language, declaring himself a thief. I am an Ada Anioma. I was raised in Anioma land. We do not take what belongs to others, let alone pride ourselves in being thieves.

“The question Senator Nwaoboshi has refused to answer is to tell Niger Delta citizens and Nigerians his role in the award of contracts for the provision of 4,800 plastic desks and chairs for primary/secondary schools in nine (9) states of the Niger Delta in 2016 with award of contract letters dated 22nd September, 2016.

  • Twitter disables Trump’s campaign video on George Floyd

Twitter disables Trump’s campaign video on George Floyd

U.S. President Donald Trump is currently not having the best of time with his favourite social media platform, Twitter as the platform once again disabled the president’s campaign tribute video to George Floyd.

The social media platform cited a copyright complaint, as basis for its action, reports Daily Mail.

The clip, which is a collation of photos and videos of protest marches and instances of violence in the aftermath of Floyd’s death, has Trump speaking in the background.

Floyd’s death after a fatal encounter with a police officer on May 25 has led to nationwide, and even global protests.

In widely circulated video footage, a white officer Derek Chauvin was seen kneeling on Floyd’s neck as Floyd gasped for air and repeatedly said, ‘I can’t breathe,’ before passing out.

The decision to remove the video is the latest from Twitter in an on-going feud between the social media platform and the President that begun with Twitter fact-checking his tweets.

Twitter said the video on the president’s campaign account was affected by its copyright policy.

It was not the the first time Twitter has removed a video from Trump on copyright grounds.

In 2019 it took down a meme of his because it used a clip from Nickelback’s “Photograph.,” Business Insider reported.

A spokesman for the Trump campaign accused Twitter of “making up the rules as they go along.”

In a tweet posted late Thursday , the @TeamTrump account complained: “Twitter and @Jack are censoring this uplifting and unifying message from President Trump after the #GeorgeFloyd tragedy.”

It added that the media had “refused” to cover the speech.
