  • FG not planning to regulate, monitor social media use – Lai Mohammed

The Federal Government says it does not issue out any regulation to gag the citizens by monitoring and recording their phone calls and social media posts.

In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, urged Nigerians to disregard the false information being circulated to that effect on the social media.

He described as false the information that under the purported Ministry of Interior Regulation, all phone calls and social media posts made by the citizens were to be monitored and recorded.

Mohammed reiterated that there was no old or new regulation from the Ministry of Interior or any Federal Government’s agency requiring the recording of all calls.

He also said that no monitoring of social media platforms like WhatsApp, Twitter or Facebook.

‘‘We are therefore using this medium to inform all Nigerians that what is being circulated in this regard is totally false and should be disregarded.

‘‘We thank all Nigerians who have reached out to us in an effort to confirm the authenticity or otherwise of this information, which is now being widely circulated on the social media.

‘‘This is the best way to ensure that the purveyors of false news do not dominate our media space,’’ he said.

  • Don’t put your relationship on social media- Tunde Wunmi Obe(T.W.O)

Nigerian singing couple Tunde and Wunmi Obe popularly known as T.W.O have been in the business of entertainment for close to two decades. In an industry where marriages crash every now and then, these duo have become an inspiration to other couple in entertainment.

In a recent interview with Hip TV, the award winning couple advise people not to put their relationship on social media, saying when you do that you put it under public scrutiny.

“I don’t think it’s the safe thing to do because when you do that you are putting it on the public scrutiny. You are basing your relationship on validation from people you don’t know and you have not seen before. Once you put it out there, people begin to criticize or commend. When you start having issues, you begin to cover up and start to live a lie. At the end of the day you say people should not meddle into your private affair, but you were the one that brought your private affair into their faces.”

The unrelenting couple also said people go into marriage with false expectations and this affects them when they go into marriage.

“People sometimes go into marriage with the wrong expectation. It’s a 50-50 thing; nobody is in a marriage to satisfy the other person, you are both there to satisfy each other. You should not go into a marriage looking for a woman who is going to be all things to you; she is not your father.”

  • Information from social media will tear up Nigeria if…Lai Mohammed

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, says the country is under siege of disinformation and fake news that can bring the country on her knees if not checked.

The minister stated this on Friday in Abuja when he paid a working visit to the headquarters of DAAR Communication Plc, owners of African Independent Television (AIT) and Raypower FM.

Mohammed said that the dangerous trend of disinformation and fake news championed by social media and which the traditional media are “unfortunately feeding on, could tear the fabric of society, if not checked.

“There was a time when the spoken and the written words were not challenged or questioned, but today it is not so.

“About 50 per cent of what we read in the social media is not true but unfortunately even when it is not credible, it goes viral and people believe the fake stories.

“My greatest problem and worry is with the traditional media, which are latching on the same fake news and disinformation.

“I am worried because it affects the credibility of the media itself and once the media is no longer believed by the people, then it has serious consequences on the society,’’ he said.

The minister recalled the recent disinformation on President Muhammadu Buhari who is on vacation but fabricated news on his death and health went viral.

“What happened last week is quite worrisome as Mr President left for vacation.

“Within 12 hours of leaving the country, news that he has died went viral, later it changed to that he was critically ill.

“This actually heated the polity and even the rebuttal of the spokespersons to the President and myself, did little to dampen the rumour,’’ he said.

He appealed to traditional media not to join force with the purveyors of fake news but ensure that the unity and security of the country become paramount consideration when weighing what news to send out.

The Executive Chairman of DAAR Communication, Raymond Dokpesi Jnr. said the issue raised by the minister was very pertinent to media and journalism generally.

“The emergence of fake news driven primarily by social media is indeed a global phenomenon,

“It behoves on us the traditional media to reaffirm our commitment to the highest ethic and standard of journalism, to investigate and fact-check stories before we go to press.”

He said AIT and Raypower, over the years have been absolutely committed to the highest standard of journalism.

Dokpesi said they had been looking forward to the minister’s visit.

“You are our own minister. After the whole cycle of electioneering, there must be the need to build bridges and move from political mood to governance mood,’’ he said..

  • Big Brother Nigeria: Nigerians angry over show holding in South Africa

The first episode of Big Brother Nigeria aired yesterday on MNet’s Africa Magic and the show was a trending issue on social media yesterday. One would expect that a show of this magnitude will be hosted and shot in Nigeria, amazingly it is being shot in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The only thing Nigerian about the show appears to be the housemates and the host, Ebuka Obi Uchendu. Just like The Voice Nigeria, the Big Brother Nigeria housemates were selected in Nigeria and then shipped away to South Africa for a reality TV show expected to last for close to 10 weeks. It looks like the housemates are merely being given an all expense paid trip to South Africa. A show of this caliber ought to be ‘Nigeriacentric’ from the beginning to the end.

However, the organizers have stated that Nigeria’s dire economic situation is one of the reasons the show is being staged in South Africa. In addition to that, they also revealed that the structure used for The Voice Naija is on ground. It will be a waste to host the show somewhere else when the facility is still available in South Africa.

Nigerians are angry over the fact that the show is being held in South Africa saying its not a truly Nigerian show. Can a Nigerian show be filmed in another country?

  • Facebook hires former CNN anchor for news role

ImageFile: Facebook hires former CNN anchor for news role
    Campbell Brown.

Former CNN reporter, anchor and host, Campbell Brown, is joining Facebook Inc to lead its news partnerships team, an appointment aimed at repairing the online social media company’s troubled relationship with the traditional media.

Brown announced the move in a post on her Facebook page on Friday.

Facebook has come under scrutiny for its role in disseminating what became known as ‘fake news’ during last year’s US presidential election, which had a negative effect on the businesses of more legitimate media companies.

In her new job, Brown will lead Facebook’s news partnerships unit, which works with media outlets which publish content on Facebook.

The company faced criticism following the election of US Republican Donald Trump for not doing enough to stop misinformation and baseless news reports being circulated by users.

With a growing number of readers getting information from social media rather than traditional media companies’ own web pages, Facebook is getting more attention for what it puts in users’ feeds.

In recent months, Facebook has taken steps to combat misinformation, working with the Associated Press, PolitiFact and website Snopes to fact-check articles that appear in users’ news feeds.

Campbell, with 15 years of experience at Time Warner Inc’s CNN and Comcast Corp’s NBC News unit, will be tasked with helping news organizations and reporters work more closely and more effectively with Facebook.

Brown founded nonprofit, education-focused news site The 74 in 2015. She said she will step back from her editorial role there but remain on the board in a note on the company’s site on Friday.

Facebook executives told the New York Times on Friday that Brown’s role would not be a de facto editor-in-chief, as she will not be involved in any content decisions – but more of a liaison to media companies. When asked to elaborate, a Facebook spokeswoman referred to Campbell’s post.

“I will be working directly with our partners to help them understand how Facebook can expand the reach of their journalism, and contribute value to their businesses,” wrote Campbell.

    Donald Trump, US President-elect.

US President-elect Donald Trump believes the only way to guarantee that a message is safe from prying eyes in the computer age is to write on paper and deliver by courier, stressing that no computer is safe.

“It’s very important. If you have something really important, write it out and have it delivered by courier, the old-fashioned way. Because I’ll tell you what, no computer is safe. I don’t care what they say – no computer is safe,” the Twitter-loving president-elect told reporters over the holiday weekend.

The comments came after the president-elect whose inauguration is later this month was asked about charges by President Barrack Obama administration and the US intelligence community that Russia was behind the cyberattacks on the Democratic National Committee (DNC).

Trump dismissed the notion that the Kremlin meddled in the presidential election to help him win.

Trump also touted the computer skills of his son Barron.

“I have a boy who’s 10 years old. He can do anything with a computer,” Trump said, accentuating that “You want something to really go without detection, write it out and have it sent by courier”.

Meanwhile, incoming White House spokesman, Sean Spicer, has said Trump will continue to tweet directly to the public as president, bypassing much of the media.

“I think it freaks the mainstream media out that he has this following of over 45-plus million people that follow him on social media, that he can have a direct conversation. He doesn’t have to have it funnelled through the media,” Spicer said.

“Business as usual is over, as I’ve said before. There’s a new sheriff in town, and he’s going to do things first and foremost for the American people,” he added.

But he also promised that the media would have access to President Trump.

“Absolutely, we understand the importance” of press briefings, he said, adding that “We’ll use every tool possible. And absolutely, we’ll sit down and make sure that on a daily basis the press is informed”.

Spicer also said the Obama administration may have gone too far in sanctions on Russia.

“One of the questions that we have is why the magnitude of this? I mean, you look at 35 people being expelled, two sites being closed down, the question is: Is that response in proportion to the actions taken? Maybe it was, maybe it wasn’t, but you have to think about that,” Spicer said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week”.

  • Facebook Year in Review: Bug sees old photos, posts reappearing

Facebook Year in Review: Bug sees old photos, posts reappearing

If you have seen your old photos on Facebook re-appearing, you are not alone as many users have complained that the photos they had posted months ago are resurfacing on their pages.

According to a report in Boston Globe on Friday the complaints came after Facebook told users on Thursday that it had compiled videos for them that showed their “year in review”, essentially a video slideshow of individuals’ photos from 2016 that they can share with their friends.

The report quoted Stephanie Milot, a reporter for PC Magazine, who wrote that four of her photos were re-posted Friday.

The new photos did not merely re-appear on timeline but the posts were marked with new dates and timestamps – confusing the users as if they had been posted anew.

However, Facebook has said that it was aware of the issue and currently investigating.

Facebook’s help forum has received many queries regarding the issue. Many users, after Friday’s Facebook glitch, were led to believe that their accounts were hacked.

“Tonight I have seen two posts on my page as new posts, but both are from 6 months ago, and are old posts. Why is this happening? Have I been hacked?” the report cited one user writing.

Earlier this year, Facebook had mistakenly said that some of its 1.79 billion users were dead.

  • I once asked God to kill me – Pastor Adeboye

I once asked God to kill me – Pastor Adeboye

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, popularly known as Daddy G. O., has said there was a time he asked God to kill him, if God will not empower him with enough anointing for his pastoral work.

The popular man of God made this statement in a message on the Thursday night being the fourth day of the 2016 Holy Ghost Congress held at the Redemption Camp Ground of the RCCG, Ogun state, Nigeria.

Pastor Adeboye who is alive and kicking, while talking on the message “Before the Call,” said he told God sometime in the past that if God would not answer him, He should take his life.

“It is either you answer me or you call me home now,” Pastor Adeboye recounted he told God.

Pastor Adeboye, who said there is a difference between reading the Bible to write WAEC or NECO examinations, and reading the Bible as someone who knows God, said the more he studied the Bible, the more he understood God answers prayers.

In his message, the Bishop of The Redeem Evangelical Mission (TREM), Bishop Mike Okonkwo said the youths of the nation Nigeria are very strategic to make things happen in Nigeria and indeed the world.

Lamenting how the value system of the country has been eroded, Bishop Okonkwo called on the young adults to channel their youthful energy positively.

He said instead of youths to be distracted by the social media, he urged them to utilize the platform for positive engagements, and take over the world for Christ.

Pastor Adeboye rounded off his message with prophetic prayers for his congregants.

The Holy Ghost Congress which started on Monday will end on Saturday, 10 December 2016.
