    Sharia law affects only Muslims, Sultan tells Corps members

    The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar has assured corps members serving in Sokoto State that Shari’a Law affects only Muslims and not binding on non – Muslims.

    He gave the assurances on Thursday when the NYSC management team in the state led by the state coordinator, Muhammad Nakamba and some selected 2022 Batch ‘B’ Stream II corps members paid him a courtesy visit at his palace in Sokoto.

    The Sultan assured them that their safety was guaranteed despite some security challenges facing the country.

    He further assured them that they would be allowed to practice the religion of their choice.

    Sultan Sa’ad noted that Sharia law is not binding on non-Muslims, stressing that nobody would be coerced to join Muslims against his or her wish.

    “In Sokoto, Sharia law is only binding on Muslims, nobody will force you to wear hijab or force you to obey Islamic laws if you are not a Muslim he stated.

    The Nigerian Islamic leader enjoined the corps members to spread joy and embrace religious tolerance. He also urged them to continue to be law-abiding and serve as role models to the younger generations.

    He implored them to perform their duties with diligence and guided by the provisions of the NYSC Act and Bye-laws as well as workplace rules and regulations.

    “If you are posted to school, impact in the lives of the students, make them better than you met them,” he added.

    The monarch urged them to respect the cultures and customs of their host communities.

    “If you have a problem at the place of your primary assignment or where you are posted to, contact the district head over there they are your guardians in the community,” he said.

    He maintained that injustice is responsible for most problems in society urging them to study and understand the lifestyle of the people of their host communities.

    Speaking, the NYSC State Coordinator, Muhammad Nakamba, said this batch of corps members are exceptional in terms of discipline and obedience to camp rules and regulations.

    Tambuwal’s Commissioner for Careers and Security Matters defects to APC

    The Sokoto State Commissioner for Careers and Security Matters, retired Col. Garba Moyi, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

    This is contained in a statement signed by Malam Bashar Abubakar, Special Assistant, New Media, to Sen. Aliyu Wamakko ( APC- Sokoto North) on Sunday in Abuja.

    Newsmen reports that this is coming barely 24 hours after the defection of Tangaza Local Government Council Chairman, Alhaji Salihu Kalanjeni from the PDP to the APC.

    Kalanjeni defected alongside eight serving councillors and two ex-councillors.

    He said Moyi was received into the fold of the APC by its leader in the state, Wamakko.

    Abubakar said that the commissioner also announced his resignation from the ruling PDP and the state executive council.

    Receiving Moyi, Wamakko charged him to work hard in ensuring the victory of APC in Sokoto East Senatorial District and the state at large during the forthcoming 2023 General Elections.

    2023: Sokoto APC governorship candidate announces running mate

    Alhaji Ahmad Aliyu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Sokoto state governorship candidate has selected Alhaji Idris Gobir, as his running mate for the 2023 polls.

    Alhaji Isa Sadiq-Achida, the state APC chairman said this at a  news conference on Tuesday in Sokoto.

    Sadiq-Achida said that Gobir was selected after wide consultations among party stakeholders.

    He said that Gobir was selected based on his vast experience and political background.

    “He is an accomplished administrator, our deputy governorship candidate, he began his service career as a school teacher, before venturing into other public service sector.

    “This includes maritime and petroleum industries, where he served with the Nigeria Ports Authority and the Department of Petroleum Resources.

    “However, in politics, Gobir was a one-time Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning and also served as Sole Administrator of Sabon Birni local government council of the state,” he said.

    The chairman said that Gobir was one of the upcoming politicians who was committed to the development of the state.

    “This is in furtherance of his dedication in defending the interest of the people of Sokoto state, especially in the fight against insecurity in the eastern zone of our state,” he said.

    In his acceptance speech Gobir, appreciated Sen. Aliyu Wamakko, the APC governorship candidate and all other stakeholders for finding him worthy for the position.

    He assured of his commitment  to ensure the victory of the party in the 2023 general elections.

  • 2023 Elections: Speaker, three others decamp to PDP in Sokoto

    Alhaji Aminu Achida, the Speaker of Sokoto State House of Assembly and three gubernatorial aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC), have decamped to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

    The four decampees were received by the Delta state Governor and  PDP’s vice presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa at the party secretariat in Sokoto state.

    The gubernatorial aspirants who decamped to the PDP are former Minister of Sports Yusuf Suleiman, Alhaji Abubakar Gumbi and serving Rep. Balarabe Salame.

    Some of the personalities who defected alongside included Rep. Yusuf Kurdula, Sen. Bello Gada, state Assemblyman Murtala Maigona, serving National Commissioner in the Public Complaints Commission and Sen. Jibril Gada.

    Speaking after receiving the decampees , Okowa said that the PDP Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has the quality and knowledge to solve the country’s numerous challenges.

    “Our party is working judiciously to salvage the country from its current challenges of insecurity and other numerous challenges.

    “Atiku is the man to take Nigeria out of its present stage, as such our country of tomorrow needs every one in the struggle by PDP,” he said.

    Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State expressed happiness over the acceptance of the defectors to join the PDP in the state.

    “Today you are all retuning home. I am happy that all of you are satisfied and convinced with the PDP leadership in Sokoto and Nigeria,” he said.

    Meanwhile, Sokoto state Governor, Tambuwal further described Atiku and Okowa as true nationalists with passion for Nigeria’s prosperity, saying their combination will yield the right leadership needed for the country.

    Earlier, the PDP National Chairman, Mr Iyorchia Ayu, said the party was witnessing favourable signal ahead of its victory in the 2023 general elections.

    Ayu, represented by Amb. Umar Damagum, said that PDP has come to be in Sokoto and Nigeria

    “This development is an indication that we are true democrats with vision. Our unity, resilience and strength demonstrates the party’s capacity to deliver to Nigerians what their yearnings are,” he said. (NAN)

  • FG committed to ending monkey pox – Minister

    The Federal Government on Sunday says it has put in place all mechanism to monitor and curb the outbreak of monkey pox causing anxiety around the world.

    The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, said this at the inauguartion of projects executed by Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto.

    Ehanire said the government is monitoring the outbreak and making effort to enlighten the public on the disease and how to prevent its spread.

    He said the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration was committed to improve the quality of healthcare delivery in the country.

    “This is a commitment to meet the highest standard found elsewhere in the world, as not everyone has the desire or means to travel abroad for treatment.

    “As such, I call on doctors, nurses and care providers to bear this in mind and commit to the stated objective of excellence in service delivery to our people.

    “Government has provided you the tools we today bear witness to,” he said.

    The minister added that this administration has since inception in 2015, made a point of investing in the health sector through budgetary provision and special intervention projects.

    “The Brachytherapy Centre constructed at this facility as an additional treatment centre for cancer, is one such projects to be commissioned today.

    “In 2021, the Federal Executive Council also granted approval for the construction, procurement and installation of a linear accelerator and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine for this hospital.

    “These modern medical equipment will improve diagnostics and management of cancer, neurosurgery and orthopaedics cases,” he added.

    Ehanire disclosed that the government was in the process of providing oxygen plants across the nation, to improve management of critically ill patients requiring oxygen therapy.

    He called on every Nigerian yet to be vaccinated for COVID-19 to avail themselves of the vaccination to support the 70 per cent ratio needed for herd immunity and healthier society.

    While assuring the commitment of the government to resolve grievances of health sector, the minister urged health professionals to support the growth of health system by putting aside acrimony.

    He congratulated the management of Usmanu Danfodio University Teaching Hospital for achieving so much in their tenure, while commending Sokoto State government for their support to the hospital.

    Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State lauded the federal government for its commitment toward addressing brain-drain in the health sector of the country.

    Tambuwal, represented by Dr Ali Inname, the state Commissioner for Health, said the brain-drain in the health sector was making the state to lose many of its health personnel.

    Earlier, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Anas Sabir, highlighted some of the hospital’s challenges, including inadequate manpower, electricity and aging facilities.

    Projects inaugurated by the minister included the newly established Nuclear medicine department, Brachytherapy Centre, Cardiothoracic Centre and upgraded Intensive Care Unit.

    Also inaugurated was the Multipurpose Centre, female students hostel, female medical ward, molecular laboratory, renovated Trauma Centre, and Accident and Emergency Department, among others.

  • PDP: Sokoto state Governor Tambuwal wins senatorial ticket

    Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has won the Sokoto South senatorial district PDP primary election in the state.

    Tambuwal aspires  to represent about seven Local Government Areas in the Red Chamber come 2023.

    The LGAs are Bodinga, Dange/Shuni, Kebbe, Shagari, Tambuwal, Tureta, and Yabo.

    Recall that the governor, last week, stepped down for former vice president Atiku Abubakar at the presidential primary of the party held at the Eagle Square Abuja.

    Governor Tambuwal had previously represented Tambuwal/Kebbe Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, where he rose to become the Speaker of the House in his third term.
    Tambuwal will contest the position  at the general election in 2023 against  the incumbent Senator Danbaba Dambuwa, who defected from PDP to APC.

    Ex- Deputy Gov. Aliyu wins APC governorship ticket in Sokoto State

    Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu, ex- Sokoto State Deputy Governor and immediate past Secretary of Police Trust Fund, has won the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election in Sokoto State.

    Aliyu polled 1,080 votes out of 1,182 votes cast at the primary election, contested by six aspirants.

    The Election Committee Chairman, Alhaji Aliyu Kyari, said Sen. Ibrahim Gobir scored 36 votes, Amb. Faruk Malami-Yabo 27 votes, and former Minister of Transport, Alhaji Yusuf Suleiman, 16 votes and 23 invalid votes.

    Kyari listed other aspirants as Abubakar Abdullahi 1 vote and Sen. Umar Gada, 0 vote.

    The exercise started about 4 p.m. on Thursday and ended about 11.40 a.m. on Friday.

    Apostle Chibuzor Gift Chinyere, the General Overseer of Omega Power Ministry (OPM) has fulfilled his promise to the parents of Deborah Samuel, who was brutally murdered in Sokoto State.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Apostle Chibuzor fulfilled the promise, donating a mini estate of 14 blocks of flats to Deborah’s parents as they arrived in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Tuesday.

    The OPM GO also donated a Toyota Corolla car for Uber business to the family of Deborah.

    According to the Apostle, the donations were fully sponsored through tithes and offerings in the OPM church.

    Deborah’s parents were seen signing the deeds of their 14 flats mini estate donated to them by Apostle Chibuzor in photos shared on social media.
