During his visit, Oluyede is expected to meet with the Sultan of Sokoto and engage with other key stakeholders within the division’s jurisdiction.

As part of the visit, the Army Chief will address troops participating in Operation Fasan Yamma, the ongoing military operation combating terrorist activities in the northwest region.

Oluyede’s arrival in Sokoto comes just three days after the Defence Headquarters confirmed the emergence of a new terror group known as ‘Lakurawa,’ which has been causing unrest in Sokoto and Kebbi states.

Five local government areas in Sokoto State have been identified as areas affected by the activities of this group.

Defence Media Operations Director, Major General Edward Buba, stated that while the Lakurawa group is contributing to the rising insecurity in the North-West, the Armed Forces of Nigeria are actively working to contain their threat and ensure stability in the region.

“Troops are confronted with a new terrorist sect in the North-West. This sect is known as Lakuwaras, the Lakuwaras are affiliated to terrorists in the Sahel particularly from Mali and Niger Republic.

“They began incursion into Northern part of Nigeria, mainly Sokoto and Kebbi states, and like I mentioned, they came in from Niger and Mali axis,” General Buba said.

He added that the new terror group emerged from Mali and the Republic of Niger after the coup that led to the breakdown of military cooperation between Nigeria and Niger.

The military also declared nine terrorists wanted for their roles in the security challenges bedevilling the nation.

How Bandits appoint, depose village heads – Sokoto LG chair

The Chairman of Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State, Alhaji Sharifu Kamarawa, has told Minister of State for Defence, Alhaji Bello Matawalle, that some communities in the council are still under the control of bandits.

Receiving the minister at the local government secretariat on Thursday, he said the bandits led by Kachalla Bello Turji, appointed and deposed village heads in those areas.

“Here in Isa town, we are living peacefully. The problem is in the eastern part of Isa. There are places that are still under the control of bandits. They appoint and depose village heads there.

“We are appealing for a military camp in Kagara to take care of those areas. We used to have a camp there before it was relocated. Then there was a relative peace in those places. So we want the camp back,” he appealed.

The chairman however admitted that since the death of Halilu Sububu, the bandits’ kingpin killed about a month ago, there had been a significant reduction in attacks on their communities.

According to him, they can now ply some roads which were formerly deserted.
In his remarks, the minister said President Bola Tinubu was seriously concerned about insecurity in the North, a reason he appointed northerners Ministers of Defence and heads of security operatives.

“The President also directed me to ensure militarisation of all the danger areas in the state. So we are going to creat a military base at Gundumi which will be patrolling Gundumi-Marnona road which remained closed for years,” he added.
Matawalle further assured residents of Isa of deployment of more security operatives to the area.

“So we need your support because the issue of security is everyone’s business. We need to know about the bandits movement.”

‘The money was given to the workers in the state and some unsculous staff diverted the funds and they have been directed to return it immediately or face serious consequences.

“I wonder how somebody would deny our workers the stipends we gave them in order to make them financially stable during the Sallah festive season.

“Those who diverted those funds must return them immediately or else we will take serious  punitive measures against them.

” We will ensure that the culprits reap what they sowed to serve as a deterrent to others, ”  he warned.

No plan to dethrone Sultan – Sokoto Govt debunks reports

The Sokoto State Government has debunked speculations that the current administration of Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State is no planing to depose the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III.

In a statement on Tuesday, a spokesman for the state government, Abubakar Bawa, condemned campaigns “to smear the cordial relationship existing between the state government and the Sultanate Council”.

A religious organisation, the Muslims Rights Concern (MURIC), had alleged a plot by the state government to dethrone the Sultan.

Subsequently, Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday said the throne of the Sultan is an institution that must be jealously guarded and protected.

Specifically addressing the Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, Idris Gobir, at the North-West Peace and Security Summit in Katsina State on Monday, the Vice President said, “In all developmental issues in this country, His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, I want to use him as a point of reference to recognise and appreciate all our royal fathers present here.

“And to the deputy governor of Sokoto, I have a simple message for you. Yes, the Sultan is the Sultan of Sokoto, but he is much more than that; he represents an idea, he is an institution, that all of us in this country need to jealousy guard, protect, promote, preserve and project for the growth of our nation.”

In its statement, the Sokoto State Government described as baseless and false, the accusations of MURIC, assuring the Muslim community that there is no plot to dethrone the Sultan, who also doubles as the President General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA).

Bawa said the present administration just like the previous administrations in the state “cherishes and respects the Sultanate Council long before MURIC was established”.

“The Sultanate Council, which has a long standing historical importance is so reverred to all the people of Sokoto State, therefore we still hold the institution in very high regards and esteem.

“To put the records straight, we would like to tell the world that the relationship between the Ahmed Aliyu-led administration and the Sultanate Council under the leadership of our most respected monarch, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar has been very cordial,” the statement read.

Bawa said the “present administration always consulted with His Eminence, the Sultan on issues affecting the state, and his invaluable contributions and inputs are always respected and included in policy implementation”.

“On the issue of sacking and transfer of some District Heads in Sokoto State, MURIC should know that the affected District Heads were accused of some unbecoming behaviours, such as land racketeering, aiding insecurity as well as insurbodination to the constituted authority.

“In order to give them fair hearing the committee summoned all the affected District Heads, after which it came up with a whitepaper report, advising the government on what to do. And it was based on that and also in the public interest that the state government acted in conformity with the recommendations made by the whitepaper committee,” the statement added.

Sultan: Northern Group lashes VP Shettima, warn him to steer clear of Sokoto internal matters

The Arewa Cultural Heritage Network has advised the federal government to respect the autonomy of Sokoto State in handling its internal matters, particularly those related to traditional leadership and governance.

The group made this statement while addressing the recent comments made by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the North West Peace & Security Summit regarding the status of His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto.

The Vice president spoke following an alarm raised by the Muslim Rights Council, MURIC.

MURIC’s Executive Director, Prof. Isiaq Akintola, had alleged a plot to depose the Sultan of Sokoto.

But reacting to Shettima’s comment, the group said Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto has been exercising his constitutional responsibilities diligently, adding that the recent actions taken by the state government, including the deposition of certain traditional rulers, are based on grounds of negligence, disloyalty, and disrespect towards the government.

    According a statement signed by
    Yunusa Abdullahi,
the Sultan of Sokoto, despite his esteemed position, has been found guilty of neglecting his palace duties, showing disloyalty, and demonstrating a lack of respect towards the current administration.

“His evident support for the PDP candidate during the last election, despite the electorate’s mandate for Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, has further strained relations. The Sultan’s continued efforts to undermine the government’s initiatives have made it challenging to foster mutual cooperation.

“We strongly urge the Vice President and other federal officials to refrain from interfering in state governance matters. The Governor of Sokoto State is well within his rights to make decisions that align with the constitutional framework and the welfare of the state.

“Furthermore, we call upon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR to ensure that the Vice President respects the boundaries of state governance and allows the Sokoto State Government to function without undue interference.

“The proposed amendment to section 76 of the local government and chieftaincy law is intended to align legal frameworks with customary procedures in Sokoto.

“It aims to clarify the roles and responsibilities within the state, ensuring a smooth and effective governance process.

” The authority to appoint district and village heads, while still involving recommendations from the Sultanate Council, will ultimately lie with the Governor, reflecting both traditional and contemporary practices.

“We believe that this alignment will promote greater stability and progress within Sokoto State. It is crucial for all parties involved to work together harmoniously for the betterment of our community.”

  • FG begins distribution of 42,000 metric tonnes of grains to citizens

FG begins distribution of 42,000 metric tonnes of grains to citizens

As part of comprehensive intervention programme to cushion hardship in the country, and revamp the Nigerian economy for sustainable development and prosperity for all citizens, the federal Government of Nigeria has begun the implementation of distribution of grains.

This was made known by the Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris at the Government House, Sokoto, Sokoto state on Sunday.

Idris spoke during the flag-off of the release of 42,000 metric tonnes (MT) of Assorted Food Commodities from the National Strategic Food Reserve (NSFR) across the country to Vulnerable Nigerians to cushion the effect of the rising cost of food commodities.

The Minister said President Bola Tinubu is concerned about rising food prices and is determined to make essential food available and affordable for Nigerians, which is why he approved the distribution of 42,000 metric tonnes of assorted grains, including sorghum, millet, and maize, and 60,000 metric tonnes of rice through millers.

“The government calls for continued patience and understanding from Nigerians as we push through these difficult times into a season of abundant benefits and truly renewed Hope. As the President never fails to emphasize, these headwinds we face are only temporary, and we will surely overcome them.” He said.

He listed the marked reduction of petrol importation to 50 percent monthly, “the stabilized foreign exchange with our Naira waxing stronger daily, and the recent launch of the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund (RHIDF), which aims to raise about N20 trillion for investment in critical sectors of the economy as early wins.

“A few days ago, the Federal Government unveiled a progressive policy in the power sector, aiming to boost electricity supply sufficiency for all Nigerians.

“The most important aspect of the policy is that the Tinubu administration is sustaining electricity subsidies for 85% of Nigerian consumers, which justifies its credential as a pro-people democratic government while increasing electricity tariffs for only 15% of the electricity consumer population.

“I urge you to continue supporting the Tinubu Administration as it implements policies to overhaul the nation’s economy.”

Speaking at the event, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Senator Abubakar Kyari said the President is desirous of cushioning the effect of the rising cost of food commodities by ensuring a sustained buffer stock, as provided by the Nigeria
    Food Storage Policy.

He explained that the National Strategic Food Reserve is expected to keep only 5 per cent of total annual food production, while 10 per cent is expected to be kept by State Governments as a buffer stock to complement the National Reserve.

However, he noted that the buffer stock program has remained non-existent in most states of the Federation and had continued to exert avoidable pressure on the Federal Government National Strategic Food Reserve stock, especially at times like this.

“Therefore, I want to encourage all the state governments to begin activating the buffer stock in their various states so that in cases of emergency and future food interventions like this, they will have stocks that complement the federal government’s efforts,” He said.

The 42,000MT of assorted food commodities, comprised of maize (23,600MT), sorghum (12,860 M), millet (3,700MT), and Garri (1,840MT), are to be distributed to vulnerable Nigerians.

The allocation for Sokoto State comprises Maize 506.00MT, Sorghum (589.00MT), and Millet (216.20MT) (44.01 trucks or 26,406 50kg bags). It has since been delivered to the state.
