    Mob lynches soldier for killing five civilians in Borno

    There was pandemonium on Saturday in Borno after a soldier allegedly killed five civilians at Barka da Zuwa, a well known hideout for criminals along Baga road in Maiduguri.

    According to reports, the killing angered residents who gathered in their numbers to lynch the soldier.

    An eyewitness, who identified himself as Musa, said the incident happened around 8.30pm on Saturday, adding that the soldier opened fire and ordered people to leave the place.

    “I saw the soldier walk in straight to where his girlfriend was seated and immediately opened fire in between her legs. He said we should leave the place. He fired three rounds of shot simultaneously.

    “Those shots he fired killed two persons instantly. He fired more and killed two other persons. As he made way to escape, he fired into the air, but the boys around followed and stabbed him in the back before disarming and slaying him with knife,” Musa, a bakery worker, said.

    Killings, according to available information, have become recurrent at the notorious criminal black spot located along Maimalari Army Barrack that hosts Operation Lafiya Dole and 7 Division of the Nigerian army.

    “They kill people here every time. These soldiers come here with their arms and ammunition fully loaded. When they come and meet you with their girlfriends, who are all commercial sex workers, they will shoot you and run away,” another source said.

    According to the eyewitnesses, the dead bodies were evacuated by relations of the victims while many others sustained injuries during the shooting.

    “The military police came and evacuated the body of the slain soldier; the Igbo people evacuated the body of the Igbo boy killed by the stray bullet. He was in his shop selling when the bullet hit him; his name is Azuka. The other bodies were also evacuated by their relatives.

    “But the injured ones are many; nobody can tell you how many got injured because while the police from Ibrahim Taiwo came for arrests, many people ran for safety. There was pandemonium everywhere,” Luka, a shop owner at Barka da Zuwa stated.

    Meanwhile, the Borno State Police Command is yet confirm or issue a statement on the incident.

    An Army Corporal, Charles Thomson who ran away from the theatre of operation in the North-eastern part of the country, has confessed to killing his own mother.

    Corporal Thomson was among the 82 suspects paraded by the Kaduna State Police Command for various criminal acts in Kaduna on Thursday.

    The 30-year-old suspect, who confessed to the alleged culpable homicide of his mother, told journalists that he stabbed his mother to death because she was a witch, adding that, his mother use to turn to a serpent at night.

    According to him, “I was arrested for culpable homicide, because my died in my hands while fighting with her. We were fighting as a result of spiritual dispute; I saw her turning to a serpent severally at night, so, it angered me.

    “She was even appearing and disappearing. And when I went into her room, I saw her with a 10 year-old boy running around her. That was what led to the fight,” he said.

    Asked about his father, the young Thompson said, his father abandoned him and his only brother with their mother about 20 years ago.

    “I am presently on sick leave, because am incapacitated, I was injured, I fell during an attack in Maiduguri. I am not a dismissed soldier, I am still serving.”

    Thompson also blamed the incident on lack of love between him and late mother, saying that his mother use to speak ill of him in the midst of people.

    “We had always had problems, there was no love. She didn’t have love for her children. So, I want to advise parents to always give assistance to their children and speak well about them in the public,” the suspect said.

    Meanwhile, the police said their investigation has revealed that, Thompson is on AWOL, that is Absence Without Leave, contrary to his claim that, he is on sick leave from the Army.

    Jihadist fighters linked to the Islamic State group on Friday killed several security personnel in an ambush on the convoy of the Borno State governor.

    According to reports eight policemen, three soldiers, and four members of a government-backed militia were killed in the attack on vehicles carrying Borno state governor, Babagana Umara Zulum near the town of Baga on the shores of Lake Chad.

    The insurgents opened fire with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades as the convoy was passing through a village close to the headquarters of the Multinational Joint Task Force, a military coalition of troops from Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon.

    “The governor escaped unhurt but 15 security men on the convoy were killed in a fierce battle with the terrorists”, one source said.

    Zulum was on an assessment tour of Baga in preparation for the return of thousands of residents displaced from the town by the jihadists in 2014, the sources said.

    The governor flew on a helicopter into the garrison town of Monguno, 60 kilometres (40 miles) away, and headed to Baga in a convoy under tight security, one of the sources said.

    All three sources were talking on condition of anonyonimity.

    The IS-affiliated Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) group maintains most of its camps on islands in Lake Chad and the region is known as a bastion for the jihadists.

    The militant group has recently intensified attacks on military and civilian targets in the region.

    In July Zulum’s convoy came under gun attack from ISWAP outside Baga, forcing him to cancel his trip to the town.

    The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a serving military personnel, Lance Corporal Ajayi Kayode and 26 others.

    They were nabbed for alleged internet fraud in the Lekki axis of Lagos State.

    Dele Oyewale, EFCC spokesman, made the announcement in a statement on Monday.

    Kayode, with service number NAF18/34732, was arrested in his military attire during an early morning raid at 6B, Fatai Idowu Arobike, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

    EFCC said the intelligence was received from concerned members of the public about his alleged involvement in criminal activities.

    In custody are Kalu Emmanuel, Hassan Sunday, Odinaka David Okem, Victor Ochiabuito, Christopher Prince, Victor Ologhu, Alex Aka, Miracle Onyekwere, Habeeb Ayomide, Olakunle Ajeigbu, Rasheed Olanrewaju and Salam Hakeem.

    Adeniran Nurudeen, Opeyemi Ojo Chris, Derrick Moris, Shehu Oluoti, Fuad Akinbayo, Babatunde Idowu, Uzo Igwe Nathaniel, Debowale Adedoyin, Segun Emmanuel, Godswill Maduchem, Samson Kazeem, Oluwatobi Oluwatoba, Olaitan Ajao and Oyindamola Kareem.

    Kayode was quoted as saying the “big shot yahoo yahoo boys” in whose company he was arrested, were his friends.

    He revealed that they had been teaching him how to make money through cybercrime.

    They are members of Organised Cyber Criminal Syndicate Network (OCCSN).

    EFCC said the ladies arrested with them confirmed the involvement of their “boyfriends” in internet fraud.

    Diamond jewelry, exotic cars and phones were recovered from them.

    The statement added that the suspects will be charged to court soon.

    A soldier suspected to be suffering from depression on Wednesday night opened fire on a Senior Army Officer, killing him on the spot.

    It was gathered that the soldier reportedly killed his superior for denying him a pass to enable him visit his family on an urgent issue.

    The incident happened in Borno but the identity of the deceased was not disclosed by the Military.

    The suspect, whose identity was not also disclosed, is a trooper of the Nigerian Army serving in 202 Battalion of 21 Special Armoured Brigade Bama, Borno.

    A statement by Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Sagir Musa, reads: ” A trooper of the Nigerian Army serving in 202 Battalion of 21 Special Armoured Brigade Bama, Borno State, went beserk at about 1030 hours on the 29th of July 2020 and fired at an officer (a Subaltern) which led to his death.

    “The incident happened when the soldier approached the officer who was standing in front of the Unit’s Headquarters making a phone call. The soldier has been arrested, is in custody undergoing investigation. General situation in the unit is calm.

    “The remains of the deceased officer have been evacuated to 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital.

    “Investigation into the case has since been instituted to determine the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident.

    “The family of the deceased has already been contacted. The Nigerian Army sympathises and condoles with the family at this trying moment, and pray to the Almighty God to repose the soul of the departed and grant his family and other loved ones the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. May his gentle soul rest in peace.”

    There was pandemonium in Benin City, Edo State on Saturday, when a combined team of police and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps operatives, allegedly beat up a soldier, for not wearing face mask.

    The incident occurred Saturday afternoon, at Lagos street, barely 24-hours after the state government shut down the street to all business activities over alleged refusal of traders and residents of the street to comply with the directives to participate in the ongoing screening and testing exercise for Coronavirus, as part of efforts to contain the pandemic.

    It was gathered that trouble started when an unidentified military operative who was on the street was asked to put on his face mask.

    An eyewitness who declined to mention his name said the soldier who was on military khaki short had an handkerchief on his neck and that his wife did not properly put on her face mask.

    “On entering Lagos Street, the soldier and his wife were asked to wear their face mask by the policemen on duty. The soldier brought his ID card to identify himself but the police officer dismissed the ID card as fake.

    “The soldier got infuriated when one of the police officer pushed his wife with a gun in a bid to force her to wear the face mask.

    “Following the argument that ensued, the policemen descended on the soldier and injured him on the head with the butt of their gun,” he said.

    Traders and passers-by were forced to run in different directions, as men of the Nigerian Army who later stormed the area, allegedly shot repeatedly into the air to scare the police and NSCDC officers.

    Quick intervention by officers of the Nigerian Army and the State police command, quelled the situation.

    The feuding parties were later driven to the nearby Oba Market Police division to resolve the issue.

    The State Police Command’s spokesman, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, could not be reached on his mobile for for comment.

    The Delta State Police Command said an investigation has commenced in the alleged killing of a soldier in the Bomadi Local Government Area of the state.

    The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Hafiz Inuwa, made the disclosure while addressing newsmen on Thursday in Warri.

    “Investigation is going on to unravel the true cause of the killing. Leaders of the sister security agencies have intervened in the matter.

    “Both the Nigeria Police and the Nigerian Army are Nigerian security forces. Government will investigate and carry out punishment on the guilty party,” Inuwa said.

    Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Bomadi Local Government Council, Mr Williams Angadi, has appealed to security agencies to exercise restraint and allow government to resolve the matter.

    A Corporal of Nigerian Army serving at the Theatre Command Operation LAFIYA DOLE, Army Super Camp 15, located at Malam Fatori, Borno State, has opened fire on colleagues killing four and injuring two others before killing himself.

    The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sagir Musa, in a statement, said the sad incident took place on Wednesday morning.

    Musa said that the wounded personnel in the incident were currently in stable condition at the Nigerian Army hospital in Maiduguri.

    According to him, efforts are ongoing to contact the families of the gallant colleagues who paid the supreme price in the line of duty.

    “May their gentle souls Rest In Peace.

    “Meanwhile, investigation into the case has since been instituted to determine the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident,” he said.

    A soldier who went on a deadly rampage in Thailand, killing more than 20 people and injuring dozens of others, has been shot dead by security forces, police confirmed.

    “It’s over now,” Police Chief Chakthip Chaijinda told reporters in Nakhon Ratchasima, north-east of the capital Bangkok early Sunday.

    The shooter was shot dead in a mall where he had holed up, police spokesman Krissana Pattanacharoen also confirmed in a statement.

    The shooter was identified as 32-year-old Sergeant Jakrapanth Thomma.

    He reportedly shot dead his commanding officer before stealing heavy weapons and a military Humvee from a military base and going on a killing frenzy.

    He shot and killed dozens of people in his path as he fled, including at a Buddhist temple.

    He then went on a rampage at a shopping mall in Nakhon Ratchasima, north-east of the capital Bangkok.

    The shooter, who had posted parts of his spree on social media, reportedly had a dispute with his commanding officer over money, dpa/NAN reported.

    A Thai soldier has gone on a shooting spree in Korat city, Nakhon Ratchasima, north eastern Thailand, killing no fewer than 20 people.

    Police were searching for the soldier, who was reportedly armed with an assault rifle and is holed up inside the Terminal 21 shopping centre.

    Reports identified the soldier as Sgt. Jakkrapanth Thomma.

    Police said that he stole a Humvee vehicle from his army base and then went on a shooting rampage around the city. Jakkrapan later went inside the Terminal 21 shopping mall and started shooting shoppers.

    The dead included a motorcycle taxi rider, students, a taxi driver and, according to unverified reports, police and children. Other video show the gunman firing his rifle into the crowd and busy traffic driving past the mall.

    Jakkrapanth has also posted several photos and videos of his attack on social media and has been updating with more photos and descriptions.
