  • Again, soldiers ransack Nnamdi Kanu’s home

Nigerian army, yesterday ransacked the home of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, saying they were searching for “technical items.”

The latest incursion was made known by the younger brother of the IPOB leader, Emmanuel Kanu, who lamented to journalists on phone that the raid was carried out even when the military was yet to account for the whereabouts of his brother and leader of IPOB.

He alleged that household items were carted away by “the invaders,” including television sets, generators, clothes, among other belongings of the royal family of Afaraukwu Ibeku.

According to him, the palace was “looted” following the raid.

He therefore called on the international community to prevail on the Nigerian Army to stop further raiding of his father’s palace and to also account for the whereabouts of the IPOB leader.

However, the desk officer of Operation Python Dance in charge of Abia State, who had always refused to reveal his identity when contacted on phone, confirmed the raid, saying it was a joint operation with the state police command.

He denied that household items were removed from the home of the Kanus, insisting that “the things removed may be technical items” and that “somebody was arrested with weapon in the compound.”

The Operation Python Dance desk officer said the joint operation at the home of IPOB leader was based on intelligence report at the disposal of the security agencies which, according to him, indicated that arms were hidden in the compound.

The Abia State Police Command which was named as a party in the joint operation did not confirm its participation as phone calls put through to both the state police commissioner, Mr. Anthony Ogbizi and the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Geoffrey Ogbonna, did not yield positive results. Both men did not pick the calls and neither called back while the PPRO did not respond to text messages sent to him

Meanwhile, IPOB has said boycotting the Anambra State governorship election is the only card left for its members living in the state to demonstrate their resolve to leave Nigeria through the conduct of a referendum.

A statement by the group’s Publicity Secretary, Mr. Emma Powerful, stated that IPOB members in Biafraland would boycott the Anambra gubernatorial election on November 18, 2017, describing it as the day of destiny for all lovers of freedom.

The statement read: “Every genuine Biafran desiring of freedom for Biafra from this Islamic bondage of Hausa Fulani caliphate called Nigeria must not only stay at home on that day, but must also make sure those around them do not vote. November 18, 2017 is a date with history.

“If we Biafrans succeed in demonstrating before international observers that we are serious about our freedom by locking down Anambra State on that day, the world will be in no doubt that Biafra is unstoppable. Our destiny is firmly in our hands.

“We must teach corrupt Igbo politicians that money cannot buy IPOB because we are special breed untainted by the corrupt tendencies of Nigerian politics. Locking down Anambra State will pave the way for IPOB to announce a date for substantive referendum later next year with or without the approval of Nigeria.”

The group said events in Catalonia and Kurdistan have pointed the way forward for it because it was clearly demonstrated by both nations that IPOB can call for and conduct its own referendum with or without the cooperation of Nigeria. It said that election boycott is the only legitimate tool left in the hands of oppressed people to register their displeasure with the ongoing genocide, arbitrary arrests and torture across Biafraland.

The statement further added that the whole world was watching to see how serious the group was towards the realisation of Biafra, and that the successful boycott of the election come November 18 will prove to the entire world how determined they were towards having their own nation.

“We are therefore asking every Biafran and IPOB member who believe in the supremacy of the restoration of Biafra over deceitful game of Nigerian politics to sit at home and not venture outdoor on the 18th November 2017 no matter the amount of threat.

“IPOB under the supreme command and leadership of Nnamdi Kanu is determined to show the world how serious we are towards the restoration of Biafra. Come the 18th of November, the world will know that Biafrans cannot participate in a fraudulent election organised by those that came to our land, killed us and when we complained, they tagged us terrorists.

“We must remain strong and resolute before our enemies as our leader taught us. He have come too far to allow propaganda and blackmail to derail us. As the blessed children of the Most High, it is our duty to let the world know that terrorists don’t vote.”

  • How JTF rescued two soldiers, 4 civilians in Rivers kidnappers den

Troops of the Joint Military Task Force in the Niger Delta, codenamed Operation Delta Safe, say they have rescued two abducted soldiers and four civilians from a kidnappers’ den.

The OPDS, with headquarters in Igbogene, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, also said the troops found human skulls and bones during the raid on the kidnappers’ camp in Rivers State.

The Coordinator, Joint Media Campaign Centre, OPDS, Major Ibrahim Abdullahi, said in a statement on Thursday that the operation followed a report of the kidnap of two soldiers who were in transit for banking services in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers.

He said after the report, the OPDS immediately swung into action by mobilising troops for the rescue operation.

The outfit’s spokesman said when the suspected militants sighted the troops approaching their den, they engaged the troops in a gun battle.

He, however, said during the gun duel, the troops overpowered the kidnappers with superior firepower, leading to casualties on the side of the militants, while others escaped with gunshot injuries into the forest.

Abdullahi said, “On September 18, 2017, at about 7.30am, OPDS headquarters received a report of the kidnap of two soldiers while in transit for banking services in ONELGA, Rivers State.

“Troops were immediately mobilised into action. They discovered a militant camp with several shrines in a forest at Obiozimini community in Rivers State.

“On approaching the forest, the suspected kidnappers opened fire on the troops, who subsequently engaged them with superior firepower, leading to casualties on the side of the suspected kidnappers, while others escaped with varying degrees of gunshot injuries into an adjoining forest.

“The operation successfully rescued the two abducted personnel. Further search of the campsite led to the rescue of four more civilians who were earlier kidnapped, including a lady.’’

He said items found in the camp and shrines were three pump action guns, eight empty cartridges, human skulls and some bones.

Abdullahi said the camp and shrines were subsequently destroyed, while the rescued victims were taken to one of the military’s medical facilities in the area.

He said troops were trailing suspected perpetrators of the crime, who fled into the forest.

He urged members of the public to provide any useful information to identify the criminals and their whereabouts in order to face justice.

He explained, “The Commander 32 Artillery Brigade, Brigadier-General James Ataguba, has personally led the brigade troop for a special operation to comb the kidnappers spots within the Akoko area of Ondo State.

  • Operations Python Dance: Soldiers will leave Aba, Umuahia tomorrow — Ikpeazu

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State said on Thursday that soldiers would be withdrawn from the streets of Umuahia, the state capital, and Aba, its commercial nerve centre, by Friday.

Ikpeazu made this known at Government House, Umuahia, while reacting to the security situation in the state.

He said the situation in the past few days, which led to the deployment of soldiers ahead of `Operation Python Dance II’, a military exercise by the Nigerian Army, had generated great concerns to both the government and the people.

“I will also be meeting the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari, to discuss possible ways of relaxing Operation Python Dance II in the state for now.”

He added that the withdrawal would not affect pre-existing military checkpoints at various locations in the state and warned mischief makers to stay away from Abia, warning that agitations and protests would not be tolerated.

“Mischief makers who want to use Abia as their base, let me announce to you that henceforth, Abia will be too hot for you to carry out your wicked acts.

“The state government will work with security agents to ensure the protection of lives and property without fear or favour. There will be no hiding place for you.”

He also urged residents of Aba to fully observe the current curfew in the city and ensure that they cooperate with security agents to maintain peace and order.

Ikpeazu said it was in the interest of the people of Abia for peace and security to be restored, as meaningful progress could not be achieved in an atmosphere of violence and anarchy.

He further advised members of the public to stop spreading rumours capable of throwing the state into disorder, warning that anyone caught perpetrating such acts would be dealt with according to the law.

“I swore to protect lives and properties of all Abians and residents and that I must do.

“I, therefore, call on all to support our efforts at making sure that lasting peace prevails in our dear state,” Ikpeazu added.

  • Call off soldiers from Nnamdi Kanu’s home, Falana tells Buhari

Call off soldiers from Nnamdi Kanu’s home, Falana tells Buhari

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) on Wednesday told President Muhammadu Buhari to call off soldiers from the country home of the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu to avert further crisis.

I wish to submit, without any fear of contradiction, that the deployment of armed troops in Abia state and the house arrest of Mr. Kanu are illegal and unconstitutional,” Falana said in a statement.

Falana said although the President was empowered by Section 217(2) of the Constitution to deploy the armed forces for the “suppression of insurrection and acting in aid of civil authorities to restore law order” he cannot exercise the power until there is an insurrection or civil disturbance that cannot be contained by the police.

To him, there was no insurrection in Abia State which the police could not contain.

The deployment of armed troops by the President and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces cannot be justified in law,” he said.

According to Falana, if the Federal Government has evidence of other criminal offences committed by Kanu, the Police should have been directed to arrest and charge him.

He said neither the Constitution nor the Armed Forces Act empowers the army to arrest any citizen who is not subject to service law.

In view of the foregoing, the President should direct the armed troops who have invaded Aba in Abia State to withdraw and return to their barracks forthwith.

At the same time, the Commissioner of Police in Abia state should be allowed to take over the case of Mr. Kanu in line with the provisions of the Constitution and the Police Act.

If he is indicted in the investigation that is expected to be conducted by the Police he should be charged to court as he is not above the law.

But on no account the army should the army be involved in the arrest, investigation and possible prosecution of Mr. Kanu or any other civilian in the country,” Falana said.

The Deputy Director Army Public Relations, Col. Kingsley Samuel, when contacted on the matter, said it was not within the purview of the 7 Division where he is the spokesman.

He asked that: “You have to get in contact with Abuja on this, as I have no available information. It is under the 8 division.”

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, ‎Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, on Thursday said he cannot confirm if any of the oil workers kidnapped by Boko Haram has been rescued.
