INSECURITY: Soldiers ambush, kill six terrorists in Kaduna

Troops of the Nigerian Army at the weekend killed no fewer than six terrorists during separate operations in Kaduna state.

The troops also recovered arms and other logistics during the operations.

This came after the military high command on Friday stated that troops deployed in the state for counter-terrorism operations arrested over 253 terrorists.

TheNewsGuru.com reports this was contained in a statement posted on Saturday on X by the Nigerian Army, the service stated that the troops ambushed some terrorists following intelligence reports on their movements in the Giwa and Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna.

The service noted that the terrorists fled after a gun battle.

The post read, “The troops, acting on credible intelligence on the movement of terrorist elements in Giwa and Birnin Gwari Local Government Areas, swiftly mobilized to intercept the threat. The ambush operation was staged at Kidandan Junction in Giwa LGA, where the troops lay in wait and made contact with the terrorists. Following a fierce firefight, the terrorists fled, abandoning one pistol.”

The Army also said two villages in the LGAs were cleared by troops, adding that the terrorists were trailed to another village where a terrorist scout was killed.

“Continuing their mission, the troops moved on to clear Basurfe and Yuna villages. During this phase, they recovered one motorbike left behind by the escaping terrorists, who had crossed a nearby river valley.

“The troops in their determination, trailed the terrorists to Katoge village, a known terrorist enclave and crossing point, where they sighted the terrorists’ scout, who was immediately eliminated, resulting in the recovery of one semi-automatic pump-action rifle, ” the post added.

During a separate operation in Saulawa village in Birnin Gwari LGA, the service said troops sighted terrorists on motorcycles and engaged them in a gun duel.

The Army said five of the terrorists were killed during the shootout, and some weapons were recovered from them.

The Army said, “The operation culminated in Saulawa village in Birnin Gwari LGA, where the troops encountered several terrorists on motorbikes, leading to a ferocious exchange of fire.

The gallant troops overwhelmed the terrorists with superior firepower, neutralising five more terrorists. The engagement also led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle, one G3 rifle, and 9 motorbikes.”

Soldiers’ deployment in Kano illegal, Atiku tells FG

Former Vice-president Atiku Abubakar has described the deployment of soldiers in Kano State in the tussle over the throne of the ancient city as an upset to the peace and security of the state.

Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, also described the soldiers’ deployment by the federal government as a breach of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

He added that Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf adhered to the law and constitution to repeal the Emirates Council Law which annulled the five Emirates created by his predecessor, Abdullahi Ganduje, in 2019.

Speaking via a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, on Saturday, May 25, 2024, Atiku said: “The situations happened within the confines of the law and in compliance with the powers conferred on the Governor as provided by Section 5(2) of the 1999 Constitution as amended; and also in consultation with the Kingmakers of Kano, reappointed Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the 16th Emir of Kano State and accordingly handed him a letter of appointment.

“It is surprising that in the early hours of today, exactly at about 5:30 a.m. the former Emir of Kano, His Majesty Aminu Ado Bayero backed by Federal might made their way into the Nasarawa Palace of the Kano Emirate while the reappointed Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II was at the Gidan Dabo, which is the main residence of the Emir of Kano.

“In this wise, the former Emir could not have made his way into the Nasarawa Palace without the support of the Federal Government having done so with the support of the Army and other security personnel in his company.

“The deployment of soldiers in extra-constitutional matters such as this undermines the integrity of the Nigerian military.

“We need to remind the Tinubu administration that Kano State is known for peace and harmony spanning thousands of years and any attempt to destablise the peace of the Land of Commerce shall be resisted. Recall that Muhammadu Sanusi II was dethroned on 9th March 2020 dethroned, Kano forged on in peace without any fracas.

We need to remind the Tinubu administration that Kano State is known for peace and harmony spanning thousands of years and any attempt to destablise the peace of the Land of Commerce shall be resisted. Recall that Muhammadu Sanusi II was dethroned on 9th March 2020 dethroned, Kano forged on in peace without any fracas.

“We wish to state unequivocally that if for any reason, law and order breaks down in Kano State, particularly Kano Municipal, the Federal Government should be held responsible as the act of providing security cover to the former Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero to come back to Kano is an invitation to anarchy.

“The Federal Government does not have the jurisdiction to interfere in the internal affairs of any State in Nigeria in the spirit of true federalism as enshrined in Section 2(1) and (3) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended and the dichotomy provided by the Exclusive and Residual List therein respectively.”

The Kano State Government had, on Thursday, repealed the Emirates Council Law which annulled the five Emirates created by Ganduje in 2019.

The state government, thereafter, merged the five Emirates into one and reinstated Sanusi as the new Emir of Kano.

Sanusi was removed in March 2020 by Ganduje who cited insubordination for his action.

The Director of Sports and Chairman, Organising Committee of the visit, AVM Abidemi Marquis, made this known while briefing newsmen on Thursday in Abuja.

While providing details of the visit, Marquis said that Prince Harry, who founded the Invictus Game, would along with his wife, visit wounded soldiers at Army Reference Hospital Kaduna on Saturday.

He said the Duke of Sussex would also interact with wounded soldiers and their families in Abuja as well as witness a novelty volleyball match during the visit.

He added that the couple would visit Lagos on Sunday where they are supporting an NGO, before departing Nigeria on Monday.

According to him, the visit scheduled from May 10 to 13, will help wounded soldiers in their recovery efforts.

“We realised that 80 per cent of our soldiers have been involved in this recovery programme and they are getting better.

“Their outlook to life is positive because when you experience a permanent disability, it affects your mental health and also your outlook to life.

“The recovery programme has given them an opportunity to improve their personal self-esteem, mental health, and emotional intelligence.

“So this engagement with Invictus is giving  opportunity of recovery for our soldiers,’’ he said.

Marquis said Nigeria would build a state-of-the-art structure for the management of post-traumatic stress syndrome for wounded and injured soldiers involved in counter-insurgency operations.

“They will be proceeding to Kaduna to visit Nigerian Army Reference Hospital where our wounded and injured soldiers are kept for their medical recovery.

Army detains 2 soldiers over alleged theft in Dangote Refinery

The Nigerian Army (NA) says its has detained two soldiers allegedly involved in a reported case of theft at the Dangote Refinery in Lagos.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, in a statement on Wednesday, said the Nigerian army was deeply concerned over its personnel’s involvement in criminality.

Nwachukwu said that act of criminality, which was prevented by the proactive intervention of vigilant troops and private security operatives on duty at the refinery, was totally unacceptable and highly regrettable.

He said that such act does not represent the ethics and values of the Nigerian army, adding that the two suspects had been identified and currently under custody.

According to him, preliminary investigation revealed that the two suspects were hired by a civilian contractor simply identified as Mr Smart, who claimed he wanted to recover some Armoured cables he had left behind on the refinery’s premises.

“Unknown to the soldiers, the said contractor, sensing trouble as they approached the security post, excused himself from the vehicle and bolted, leaving them behind.

“Further investigations are ongoing to fully ascertain the depth of culpability of the apprehended soldiers.

“Additionally, the stolen cables have been recovered and are in safe custody,” he said.

Nwachukwu said the army was working closely with the management of  Dangote Refinery to ensure  thorough investigation into the unfortunate incident.

He reassured the public that appropriate disciplinary measures would be meted out to the culprits, adding that no act of criminality would be condoned amongst its personnel.

“The Nigerian army remains steadfast in ensuring that the key values of discipline and integrity are adequately entrenched amongst its personnel.

“We shall also continue to cultivate and promote dedication and a culture of accountability and ethical behaviours within our ranks,” he added.

  • Army dismisses allegation of bias in trial of soldiers

Army dismisses allegation of bias in trial of soldiers

The Nigerian Army has dismissed allegation of ethnic bias in the trial of soldiers recently arraigned before a Court Martial in 82 Division, Enugu.

This is contained in a statement in Abuja on Saturday, by Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, Director, Army Public Relations.

Nwachukwu said that the Nigerian army was a composite national institution and not an ethnic militia.

He was reacting to a media report that there was a deliberate effort to convict soldiers of Southern extraction, while those from Northern Nigeria were allowed to go free.

He said the report alleged that some allegedly aggrieved soldiers who were arraigned before the court martial expressed the concern.

He noted that the misleading report was being circulated to cause disharmony within the army and by extension the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

According to him, the report is entirely bereft of any strand of truth and ultimately aimed at disparaging the current leadership of the army in particular and the armed forces in general, using the instrumentality of ethnic and religious bigotry.

Nwachukwu explained that the composition of the said court martial was not based on regional representation but was diverse, with personnel drawn from various regions of the country.

He revealed that the President of the Court was of Northern extraction, while the Judge Advocate was from the South.

He added that 60 per cent of the court martial members were of Southern extraction.

According to him, this demonstrates a fair and balanced representation, even though religion and ethnicity are not major focal criteria in the decision making process of the army.

“The decision of a court martial is collective and based on evidence presented during the trial.

“The said court martial tried the personnel, irrespective of their ethnic and religious affiliations and the outcome was determined strictly based on the evidence presented.

“In espousing the position of the Nigerian Army in the cases mentioned in the report, taking that of Pte. Usman Shonva for instance, wherein evidence revealed that there were other soldiers at the scene of the incident, who also fired their weapons.

“Hence, the court, based on this finding among others, reached the conclusion that the shot that killed the dead soldier could have been fired by any of the soldiers at the scene, thus, leading to his discharge and acquittal.

“It must be emphasised that the Nigerian Army does not task its personnel (including for court martial membership) on a regional basis in order to achieve national spread”.

“The Nigerian Army is a composite national institution and not an ethnic militia. It will therefore not bite the odious bait being dangled to induce splintering along sectional, ethnic and religious fissures.

The Army spokesman said the court martial proceedings were conducted in a fair and unbiased manner.

He urged the publisher of the report to refrain from peddling misinformation capable of engendering disaffection and disharmony among army personnel, other services and security personnel.

“We urge the public to note the true picture and discountenance the false report published by the online media platform.

“Continued spread of the misinformation will only serve the ulterior motive of the author, which is to cause disharmony in the Nigerian army.

“The army is committed to upholding justice, equity and discipline within its ranks, and will continue to ensure that all personnel are treated fairly and in accordance with the law,” he added.

  • My abductors told me they are dismissed soldiers – NAN reporter

My abductors told me they are dismissed soldiers – NAN reporter

Not long ago, one of the correspondents of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), was abducted by gunmen in Abuja.

The correspondent had boarded their vehicle at the Federal Secretariat on the way home after an assignment on the fateful day.

The fear-stricken Reporter, who is yet to recover from the trauma and has become generally afraid of everyone around her, tells the story:

On the said day, I covered an assignment at the Presidential Villa.

After the assignment, I filed my story and decided to go home. One of the Directors in the Villa offered to give the cameraman and I a ride to the Federal Secretariat where we could board commercial vehicles.

I live in the suburbs and had to get to the Finance junction to board a vehicle to Dantata bridge and thereon to my place.

    Time was 4.45 p.m.

I was careful not to join the wrong vehicle in view of the many stories about the activities of kidnappers and “one chance” operators in Abuja.

So, I refused to board the first vehicle that stopped because it was totally new and its owner couldn’t have been so poor to begin to use it as a cab. I didn’t trust it.

I boarded the second that came because the driver looked like a regular civil servant forced by the economic situation to pick passengers to augment his income. The passenger beside him looked like a banker that had just closed from work because he was well dressed, looked calm and wore an expensive perfume.

I told them I was going to Dantata bridge along Lugbe route.

There was only one person at the back. He wore a black vest atop a military camouflage. He was just playing with his phone.

When we moved from the Finance junction, we stopped at the Bolingo junction, near NAN headquarters, where there were many others waiting for vehicles to go to Lugbe.

A lady peeped and said she was going to Lugbe. The driver told her to pay N400, she offered to pay N200. But when they were discussing, the man seated beside me shouted on the driver and threatened to leave if the vehicle did not move. He ordered the lady to close the door. The driver quickly moved and started speeding.

At this point, I was uncomfortable. I became afraid and told them I wanted to go down; I told them I had forgotten something and wanted to go back to pick it.

That was when they swung into action.

The front seat passenger quickly adjusted his seat and pressed it down to block me from attempting to go out while the man beside me brought out his gun, pinned it on my forehead and ordered me to close my eyes. He pressed me down to his laps and ordered me to cooperate with them otherwise they would kill me. They blindfolded me and said they would waste me if I didn’t behave well. They asked me where I live and I told them. They warned me against lying to them.

At that time, I just started praying inside me. My body was shaking. I was dazed and confused. I started begging them not to harm me.

They ransacked my bag and took everything. They took N375,000 a colleague gave me to help buy a gadget. They took my wristwatch and GTB ATM card.

They also took my laptop, phones, 200 dollars, headphones, power bank, the Villa tag, NAN Identity Card, some other monies and valuables.

They said they had been trailing me from the Villa and were aware that I was from the particular assignment.

I told them I am just one of the reporters deployed by NAN to cover the Villa. They said I should call my family to bring N13 million while I should bring N5 million.

I was so confused. So scared. I told them I am just a poor reporter and had nothing and no one. They scrolled through my phones and said I should call my contacts to bring money. I told them I only visit those people to pray for them.

They asked if I am ready to change my faith. I told them I would not. They said even at gun point? I said yes.

They asked me what bloody civilians knew about security to even organise any seminar about it.

They told me they were not “one chance” operators. They said they were soldiers with the two in front already dismissed from the service while the one beside me was still in service and currently in Abuja.

Those dismissed said they were kicked out in Sokoto and had come to Abuja for the Army General that sacked them, but did not meet him in his house.

At that point, the journalist in me was curious to know why they were dismissed, but I couldn’t have asked them that ‘crazy’ question.

They said they were forced into criminality because of the situation in the country and that Nigeria had turned them into criminals.

They tied my legs and said they would take me to Sokoto; they were discussing among themselves whether to throw me out of the speeding vehicle.

They said they picked me because they thought I had money. And added that they wouldn’t have picked me if they knew I had nothing.

I told them there was no money where I work.

They showed me an Indian ring they could press on me and I would lose my memory.

Inside, I kept praying, while begging them not to harm me.

They collected the PIN of the GTB ATM card and withdrew everything. They took money that evening and continued in the morning of the next day as I was too traumatised to get GTB to block the account.

They took a total of N505,000 from the account.

I was just sweating. And sucked up. I was just praying. One said they should waste me, one said I should be allowed to go. They kept moving round and round. Deep down in me, I believed that by God’s grace, they would not kill me.

After going to the ATM where they took the money, they said they would not kill me because of two reasons – my confidence in God and the fact that I did not betray or deny Him even at gunpoint, and the fact that I pray for people.

They kept moving and eventually dropped me somewhere. I think it was past 8.50 p.m. or so. I  still don’t know which part of Abuja that is.

After I left the vehicle, the driver, who appeared to be their commander, called me and gave me my Villa tag. And the Techno phone. I tried to use it to call my boss in the office, but the phone was not working. I don’t know what they did to it. It appeared to have been deactivated.

It was after I was able to get some people to reset it that I was able to put calls through.

    EPILOGUE

I still feel so scared. I still feel so afraid of everyone and everything. But I thank God that they did not kill me.

I find it difficult to trust anything and anyone around me. Sometimes, I feel like taking to my heels to nowhere in particular. It was a traumatic experience. I try not to bring back the hard memories but they keep returning.

It was a bad experience, really. But, I thank God that they did not kill me.

Soldiers rescue woman from committing suicide in Lagos

The 81 Division, Nigerian Army (NA) soldiers have prevented a suicide attempt by one Mrs Francesca Spark who plunged into the Lagos Lagoon around 81 Division Officers’ Mess, Marina Lagos.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Division’s spokesperson, Lt.-Col. Olabisi Ayeni, on Monday.

Ayeni said Spark attempted to take her own life; but troops of 65 Battalion NA deployed at the Officers’ Mess sighted her and quickly used their military ingenuity to her rescue.

“She was given first aid treatment and stabilised by the battalion medical team.

“After stabilisation, we contacted the family and she was handed over to her husband, one Mr Ovie Spark, residing at Awoyaya Lagos,” he said.

Ayeni said the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division NA, Maj.-Gen. Muhammed Usman, commended the soldiers for being observant and for their ingenuity, courage and gallantry.

“The GOC said he was pleased that soldiers brought their training in disaster management to bear in such a critical situation that might have claimed the life of a fellow citizen.

Usman said such an operation is a military operation other than war, conducted during emergencies or natural disasters, which affirms that troops have been trained to support leading agencies during emergencies.

“The GOC assured residents of the NA’s commitment to protect them and their property even during emergencies,” Ayeni said.

  • Nigerian Army injects new set of battle-ready soldiers into operations

Nigerian Army injects new set of battle-ready soldiers into operations

The Nigerian Army has graduated a new set of battle-ready troops to confront insecurity in the country, after months of rigorous training at the Nigerian Army Training Centre, Kachia in Kaduna state.

This is contained in a statement by the Director, Army Public Relations, Brig-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, on Friday in Abuja.

Nwachukwu said the graduation event featured practical demonstration of military drills, showcasing the soldiers’ newly acquired competencies in tactical manoeuvre, physical proficiency, advance shooting drills, Warrior ethos, unarmed combat, among other vital skills.

He said the training package, code-named, “Exercise Restore Hope V”, was to adapt personnel who recently passed out of Depot Nigerian Army to the challenges posed by the ever-changing nature of threats within Nigeria’s security environment.

Addressing the graduating troops, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, said the objective of the exercise was an effort by the Nigerian army to close observed gaps in its operations through focused, adaptive, and effective training.

Lagbaja said the training was conducted with a view to producing highly skilled and competent manpower for operational engagements in all theatres.

He added that the training perfectly resonates with his Command Philosophy, which is to “transform the Nigerian Army into a well-trained, equipped and highly motivated force, towards achieving its constitutional responsibilities within a joint environment.”

The COAS said that ‘Exercise Restore Hope’ would offer a unique post-depot training model, designed to enhance the professionalism and battle readiness of young soldiers.

He emphasized that training was a key investment needed to achieve operational successes, adding that a nation that places high premium on funding troops training will spend less in prosecuting her wars.

He expressed satisfaction with the quality of training and performance of the troops in the demonstration drills and implored them to apply the skills and knowledge gained from the exercise in the field, to create a safe and secure environment for socio-economic development.

The COAS appreciated President Bola Tinubu for his untiring support to the Nigerian army as well as the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru and the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa for their efforts in the capacity development of the army to deliver on its constitutional mandate.

During a tour of facility at the Nigerian Army School of Artillery, located in the same Kachia, Lagbaje urged troops to shun all social vices and remain professional and loyal to the Constitution and Government of Nigeria.

He reiterated his commitment to guaranteeing their welfare as topmost on his agenda for the Nigerian army.

He used the opportunity to inaugurate the school Bakery to meet the confectionary needs of both personnel and students in the school.

At the graduation, the Chief of Training (Army), Maj.-Gen. Sani Mohammed, said that the 16 weeks rigorous training had imbued the troops with requisite military bearing to adapt to the highly dynamic security situation in the country.

Dignitaries who witnessed the ceremony are Principal Staff Officers from the Army Headquarters, General Officer Commanding 1 Division, Commandants of Nigerian Army Schools and Heads of Security Agencies in Kaduna.

Also at the event are the Agom Kachia of Kachia Chiefdom, His Royal Highness, Zamani Dogonyaro and representatives from Kachia Local Government.
