5 former soldiers handed life sentences

A court in Ankara on Wednesday sentenced five former senior soldiers to life in prison over their links to the failed 2016 coup by a military faction.

The five were convicted of violating the constitution, among other charges, according to state broadcaster TRT.

Two of them were separately convicted of attempted assassination of the president.

The trial against a total of 497 defendants, including former soldiers from the presidential guard regiment, had been under way since October 2017.

In total, 488 of them have been convicted of violating the constitution, TRT said.

The exact sentences against the remaining defendants were not immediately clear.

Prosecutors had accused the suspects of occupying the TRT headquarters in Ankara on the night of the coup, July 15, 2016, and forcing the news anchorwoman to read out the putschists’ statement.

Ankara blames the U.S. based Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen for orchestrating the abortive putsch and has designated his movement as a terrorist group.

The cleric, an ally turned foe of President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, denies the charges.

Out of a total of 289 trials over the coup attempt, 14 are still ongoing, according to Anadolu.

Bandits kill five soldiers, one NSCDC officer in fresh attacks on Niger communities

Seven persons including five military officers and one Civil Defence Officer have been feared killed in a bandit attack on five communities in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

According to a report by Channels Television, ten other persons were kidnapped with seven motorcycles stolen and military vehicles burnt down in the attack carried out from Wednesday night into the early hours of Thursday morning.

The communities include Allawa, Manta, Gurmana, Bassa and Kokki all in Shiroro council.

Locals said the bandits as early as 2:00am on Thursday stormed the camp of the Joint Security Task Force comprised of the Army, Police, Civil Defence and vigilantes at Allawa and opened fire on them unaware, killing five soldiers and one Civil Defence Officer.

Many villagers were injured in the attack and are reported to be receiving treatment at various health centers.

Confirming the incident, Chairman, Shiroro Youth Movement, Mohammed Idris said the bandits armed with AK-47 numbering about 100 attacked each community for about five hours unchallenged.

“During the invasion, they killed one Alhaji Sale in Madalla community under Bassa ward and kidnapped four people and went away with two motorcycles.

“Also in Kokki Boddo a community under Gurmana ward, they abducted six people and took away five motorcycles; five people were also kidnapped in Manta ward,” Idris said.

Idris then appealed to both the Federal and State government to increase their effort in securing the lives of people at the various communities.

The Co-convener, Concerned Shiroro Youths, Abubakar Yusuf Kokki also confirmed that five soldiers and one Civil Defence Officer were killed in Allawa by bandits, who attacked their camp early on Thursday morning.

According to him, “the criminals took the personnel of the Joint Security Task Force unaware and opened fire on them. In the process, they burnt down the camp to ashes including the operational vehicles and also killed about six personnel (five Army Officers and one Civil Defence Officer) while many others sustained various degrees of gunshot injuries.”

He explained that Allawa before the attack was one of the few towns standing in Lakpma axis of Shiroro local government that have not been invaded in the recent past.

Lamenting the rate of attacks by bandits in the area, Kokki said, “We, the affected victims view this phenomenon from the angle of ethnic cleansing as we have been abandoned to our fate. As a result of sheer negligence from the authorities constitutionally saddled with the responsibility of providing adequate security to the citizenry, there is deliberate efforts by criminals through crude means to depopulate us which from all indications.”

Several soldiers arrested after an attempted coup in Niger

An attempted coup in Niger on Wednesday has been aborted, with many soldiers arrested, according to sources.

The putsch staged by a military unit comes just two days before the country’s first ever peaceful transition of power.

President-elect Mohamed Bazoum is due to be sworn in on Friday — taking over from President Mahamadou Issoufou.

Residents of Niamey, the capital said there was “intense shooting, with heavy and light weapons,” from 3 a.m. local time.

The shooting around the presidential palace lasted about 30 minutes.

In videos posted on social media, the sound of short bursts of gunfire could be heard in the darkness.

Anonymous security sources told both Reuters that the situation was under control after assailants attempted to seize the palace.

The United States Embassy in Niamey issued a security alert saying it would not open its doors on Wednesday “due to gunshots heard near our neighbourhood.”

President-elect Bazoum defeated a former president Mahamane Ousmane, in the election run-off in February. But Ousmane alleged fraud.

Ousmane served as president for three years until a military coup toppled him in 1996. He has since tried to regain power, most recently through the February election.

Niger has had four coups since its independence from France in 1960.

The spread of deadly extremist violence has long plagued the West African country, with jihadi insurgencies spilled over from Mali and Nigeria.

Insurgency: Few days after aggrieved soldiers protest, COAS orders purchase of spare parts, repair of faulty equipment

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru has ordered the immediate purchase of spare parts and repairs of damaged equipment to better the fight against insurgency in the country.

The Army chief also admitted that the the military is facing logistics constraints affecting its operations across the country.

He stated this on Monday in his opening remarks at the combined COAS First Quarter Conference and Nigerian Army Operations Retreat 2021 held at Army Headquarters Command Officers’ Mess in Abuja.

Attahiru, however, noted that the President has pledged to continue to support the Nigerian Army, adding that they would soon receive combat enablers to enhance and boost their operations.

According to him, a concerted effort is being made to eliminate the threat of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) that has been a major impediment to troops and their operations in Operation Lafiya Dole.

“Again, in order to increase our operational capabilities, I have approved the purchase of spare parts and directed that all damaged and unserviceable equipment in the theatre be backloaded for immediate repairs.

“I want to assure you that I am determined in rebuilding the fighting skills, capacity, confidence, and morale of our troops across the various theatres of operations,” the army chief said.

He added, “In order to achieve this, my top priorities for the second and third quarters of the year would be training – I will ensure that through functional training, officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army are equipped with the right competencies and skills to effectively undertake daring missions in addition to developing special operations forces.”

Attahiru explained that this would be closely followed by procurement that would ensure appropriate kitting and provision of protective gear, weapons, equipment, and platforms.

He highlighted administration as a key principle of war, saying the welfare of troops would also be given paramount attention.

The army chief, however, asked the senior officers at the event to ensure the sustenance and maintenance of all equipment and put measures in place for sound administration of troops and their families.

He said, “I want to state that the Nigerian Army under my watch will remain resolute in decisively dealing with any threat confronting the country.

“Hence, I have directed that serious attention must be given to sustaining and improving the tempo in all ongoing Nigerian Army operations across the country.”

“Commanders must, therefore, glean from my command philosophy to ensure that operational and administrative proficiencies of Nigerian Army formations and units are sustained and improved upon,” Attahiru added.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that soldiers of an unidentified battalion in Operation Lafiya Dole last week protested their posting to a location in the Theatre of Operation.

The aggrieved soldiers, according to sources at the Maimalari barracks besieged the headquarters of the Theatre Command in Borno State, shooting sporadically into the air on Thursday night following their deployment.

They cited non-payment of allowances and poor equipment as reasons for their rebellion.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army dismissed the reports saying it was unsubstantiated and did not represent the true situation of the incidents.

Army speaks on soldiers who protested unpaid allowance, poor equipment in Borno

The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports that its troops of an unidentified battalion under Operation Lafiya Dole protested over alleged unpaid operational allowances as well as obsolete equipment in Maiduguri.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Yerima, in a statement on Friday, said the media reports were unsubstantiated and did not represent the true situation of the incidents.

Yerima said that what some media reports described as protest was a mild complaints by few soldiers of Mobile Strike Team (MST), deployed for Exercise Tura Takaibango in the frontline of operations.

According to him, at about 3 p.m. on March 25, some of the troops of Mobile Strike Team 10 and 11, who were primed to conduct phase 2 of Exercise TURA TAKAIBANGO in Bama after the first phase of the exercise, raised some concerns.

“The concerns were quickly addressed before they were relaunched to the second phase of the operations.

“On the issue of ‘obsolete weapons’ as reported in some media, the position of Army Headquarters is that soldiers have right to demand for proper weapons to prosecute the operations.

“However, the Federal Government was making concerted efforts toward deploying new fighting equipment to augment the existing ones in the theater of operation.

“The Army wishes to also deny report that any soldier was owned any operational allowances. No soldier was owned any allowance in the theatre,” he said.

Army spokesperson gave assurance that Nigerian army would continue to remain focused and determined to perform its constitutional roles and responsibilities professionally in the protection of the sovereignty of Nigeria.

He added that the army was also committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property while clearing the terrorists, their cohorts and collaborators in the country.

Soldiers of an unidentified battalion in Operation Lafiya Dole have protested their posting to a location in the Theatre of Operation.

The aggrieved soldiers, according to sources at the Maimalari barracks besieged the headquarters of the Theatre Command in Borno State, shooting sporadically into the air on Thursday night following their deployment.

They cited non-payment of allowances and poor equipment as reasons for their rebellion.

Some of the soldiers who spoke under anonymity recall how a whole unit that went for reinforcement when Marte was captured last month, perished under superior firepower of the enemy forces.

This protest is coming on the heels of arms procurements mystery recently exposed by the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, where both the outgoing and incoming service chiefs said they are in the dark on the whereabouts of the funds or equipment.

No less than ₦1 billion was released for the procurement according to Monguno, a retired Major General.

Meanwhile, the Media Coordinator for Operation Lafiya Dole Colonel Ado Isa as well as the Director Army Public Relations Brigadier General Mohammed Yerima are yet to react to the latest development.

  • Gumi replies CAN, says message on profiling of soldiers manipulated, misunderstood

Gumi replies CAN, says message on profiling of soldiers manipulated, misunderstood

Islamic Scholar, Sheik Ahmad Gumi, has said he was misunderstood by Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), stressing that the video that went viral about his discussion with the bandits was distorted and the actual message was manipulated.

He also said bandits must be forgiven if Nigeria is serious about ending the wave of violence across the country.

Sheikh Gumi, who has been on peace-seeking mission to the strongholds of bandits, said the government pardoned those who instigated the civil war that led to the deaths of millions of people, wondering why bandits cannot be pardoned.

“I see no reason why we can not accept their (bandits) repentance and give them amnesty. You ask why do we give them amnesty but they told us specifically that they are ready to drop their arms and they don’t want to be pursued with legal actions after they repented.

“If the country could pardon coup plotters who committed treasonable offences in the era of military administration, the bandits can as well enjoy similar forgiveness even better under democratic rule.”

He made this known while expressing his reservation over the statement made against him by Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

The Islamic scholar said he was misunderstood by CAN because the video that went viral about his discussion with the bandits was distorted and the actual message was manipulated.

“These people in the bush who have taken arms, they are criminals. I wonder who is not a criminal. Since Nigeria forgave coup plotters, forgave those that killed. Even those that instigated civil war; civil war that millions of people died, I see no reason why we can not accept their repentance.

“Since that is the bottle-neck and it is only the federal government that can give them that leverage. And strangely we found out that they are victims too. They were victims of profiling. So many of them were arrested and punished just for looking like herdsmen.

“Nigerians should embrace each other and live in peace. We should not try to do anything that will cause havoc. I will also call on the press to desist from sensational reporting because this nation is already in flames.

“You should be very careful in what you report. What you see. Continue reporting responsibly and you should not stir the Christian brethren who are known to be peaceful and law-abiding. We have been together for long and nobody can separate us, we should learn to live together in peace.”

  • CAN tackles Gumi over religious profiling of soldiers, condemns presidency’s silence

CAN tackles Gumi over religious profiling of soldiers, condemns presidency’s silence

“We recalled how Apostle Johnson Suleiman, Dr Obadiah Mailafia, Prophet Isa El-Buba and of recent, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Dr Matthew Hassan Kukah’s statements were handled by security operatives and equally reacted to by the government. Do we truly have sacred cows in the country now?

The leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has accused an Islamic leader, Sheik Gumi for trying to cause religious crisis in the country after saying that soldiers that are involved in most of the criminalities are not Muslims.

CAN described the statement as shocking and disappointing, calling on Gumi to as a matter of urgency withdraw: “the unpatriotic and divisive utterances credited to him in the interest of peace and unity of this country.”

Gumi spoke recently while addressing some bandits in Tegina forest, a border town between Niger and Kaduna States, during the abduction of school children.

He was quoted as saying: “What I want you people to understand is, soldiers that are involved in most of the criminalities are not Muslims. You know, soldiers have Muslims and non-Muslims. The non-Muslims are the ones causing confusion just to ignite crisis.”

The religious body faulted President Muhammadu Buhari’s prolonged silence, adding that: “is tantamount to an endorsement of Gumi’s dangerous statement. If anyone said it was the Christian soldiers who are attacking armed bandits, that person does not wish this country well and he doesn’t want the war against terrorism and banditry to end in victory. Gumi’s so-called audio evidence cannot be taken seriously because audio evidence can be deliberately arranged to make a point.

“Secondly, how can we ascertain the credibility of the person alleging that it was the Christian soldiers that were attacking communities and bandits? This unreasonable outburst is not only demoralizing and a plot to divide the Nigerian military into two along religious lines, it equally derogatively portrays the non-Christian soldiers as being not committed to fighting criminality.”

The statement issued on Wednesday by CAN General Secretary, Barrister Joseph Daramola said: “The leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed shocks, pains and disappointment in one Islamic leader, Sheik Ahmad Gumi over his alleged profiling of military operatives recently while addressing some bandits.

“We still want to believe that Sheik Gumi was quoted out of context. But if it was true, then, the unity and peace of the country are being threatened by the sentimental statement of this cleric. We have not heard the Presidency react to this dangerous statement as they are supposed to do, cautioning this cleric who has thrown caution to the wind. Such a grave allegation is evil, divisive, unpatriotic, ill-wind and reprehensible.

“We ask again, is Sheik Gumi trying to polarise the military along the religious divides? Is he inciting the bandits against Christians? Is Gumi saying that the Muslim soldiers are on vacation in the ongoing war against terrorists, murderous herdsmen and bandits? What good will this statement do to the insecurity in the country? We are of the opinion that the government of Nigeria should seriously caution Gumi for his reckless and inflammatory statement.”

If what Gumi reportedly said was attributed to a Christian leader, CAN said the security operatives would have invited him or declared him wanted and the Presidency would have publicly condemned that Christian leader.

Daramola said: “We recalled how Apostle Johnson Suleiman, Dr Obadiah Mailafia, Prophet Isa El-Buba and of recent, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Dr Matthew Hassan Kukah’s statements were handled by security operatives and equally reacted to by the government. Do we truly have sacred cows in the country now? We are curious to know how Gumi was able to locate the whereabouts of the bandits when our security agencies are giving us the impression that they are invincible. If the terrorists can be located, what hinders the police and the military from arresting them and bringing them to book? Is anyone in government conniving with the terrorists so that this insecurity might continue?

“Now that bandits are being pampered, money is being made available to them and highly respected politicians and religious leaders are speaking for them, criminals are being emboldened to commit their unlawful actions with impunity. Who truly offended these terrorists? What sin did the people they are attacking and kidnapping commit against them? Why should anybody be speaking in favour of the terrorists? Will pampering the terrorists not truly going to be around with us in the next 20 years as foretold by the immediate Chief of Army Staff?”

Nigeria’s unity, according to CAN is on trial and if those: “running the country are playing the ostrich, there may be no hope of redemption. May God save our nation. The country belongs to Muslims, Christians and the unbelievers and any attempt to divide us against one another by any cleric or through the over-zealous divisive actions of those in government may spell doom for all of us.”

The religious body called for caution and restraint from all Nigerians.
