Solskjaer must know he needs a trophy – Sheringham

Manchester United Treble winner Teddy Sheringham says manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs a trophy to keep his job.

United are left fighting on the three fronts of the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League after they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by West Ham last week.

“Without a doubt there is pressure on him this year to win something. If he doesn’t win something, he knows the writing is on the wall,” Sheringham told the Daily Mail.

“They have made the big signings in Varane and Sancho. That would be enough but then Ronaldo becomes available, United acquire him and they need to see results now.

“Ole is still a young manager and he is gaining experience while on the job. At the top level he only knows United and that is a hard job to leave. I think he is progressing but he needs to take it to the next level.

“I think everybody is willing him to do well, they want him to do well because he is a Manchester United legend.

“That gives him some scope but you have to emphasise, he needs to win something. It’s not rocket science.”

At the heart of those plans looks set to be an attempted clear-out of players who are unlikely to play a large role in his plans.

The Sun reports as many as seven players are at risk of being moved on when the winter window gets underway.

Donny van de Beek, Jesse Lingard, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly, Anthony Martial, Diogo Dalot and Alex Telles are named as the group who Solskjaer is happy to part with.

They were replaced with Nemanja Matic and Jesse Lingard.

I don’t pay attention to Pogba assists – Solskjaer

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has claimed that he is uninterested in how many assists Paul Pogba has delivered for the Red Devils this season.

TheNewsGuru reports that, Pogba already have seven assists in his first four games, and is already a third of the way to the all-time Premier League season record of 20 held by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry.

“Paul has come back in good shape,” Solskjaer told a pre-match press briefing ahead of his side’s trip to Young Boys. “He’s worked really hard over the summer. He’s come back lean and fit.

“What does an assist consist of? A square pass to Bruno [Fernandes] and he puts it in the top corner? Or a great ball for Mason [Greenwood]?

“Paul has always been a great passer and he’s not got assists from his best passes this season. I don’t pay attention to assists, it’s a social media thing. But Paul has played well for sure.”

When Solskjaer was asked if it is impossible to leave Ronaldo out, he replied: “The thing with Cristiano is that he looks after himself so much so I know he will recover quickly and he has had a pre-season.

“Of course it’s important that we get everyone up and running and to get him up and running and to give him 90 minutes.

“Of course there is a game on Tuesday (against Young Boys). We will see what we do. But no, it’s not impossible to leave him out. He is 36, Mason [Greenwood] is 19, so it’s the same, I have to manage his minutes, and I have to manage a 36-year-old’s minutes as well.”

Everything about Varane is what you want – Solskjaer

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Raphael Varane is ready to play.

United go to Southampton on Sunday.

Solskjaer said: “It’s no secret that we were close when he left to go to Real Madrid 10 years ago. Sir Alex was there speaking to them and we were close. We have had feelings for him for many years. Everything about him is class. He’s quick, strong, good in the air. He can play with both feet. The short answer is everything about him is what you want.”

On Edinson Cavani’s return, Solskjaer also said: “Edinson has always looked after himself. He’s lacking in team training but you can see he has been looking after himself. • With Varane, we have different ways of playing – Solskjaer

With Varane, we have different ways of playing – Solskjaer

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskajer says Raphael Varane will help them play in different ways.

Solskjaer believes Varane and £72.9m arrival Jadon Sancho will make a ‘huge difference’.

“Sir Alex was very close to signing him. This time around, we’ve got him at the other end of his career. He’s proved over his old career, what a good person he is, professional and he’s won what there is to win.

“I’m very happy getting both our players in. The club shows ambition with one of the most exciting young forwards in world football and one of the most respected centre-backs in the world and one of the most winning centre-backs in the world.

“With him in, we’ve got different ways of playing as well. I can see different ways of playing with Raphael, I can’t wait to get him in, hopefully we can get him in as soon as.

“From what I know, the club is working on the quickest possible solution to get everything sorted [for the medical]. I don’t know the timescale yet, there’s a visa coming into England now with Brexit and quarantining, everything has to be done as quickly as possible and by the book.

“As I’ve said before, every manager would be happy the sooner and the earlier the deals are done. This year we’ve managed to get it sorted, the two we’ve got in will make a huge difference for us, both this season, short-term, but also long-term.”
