Impending political war as Soludo reportedly seals APGA office

Impending political war as the Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo, has allegedly deployed heavily armed security operatives including soldiers, mobile policemen and state government agents to seal off the head office of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) led by Edozie Njoku in Awka.

Addressing a gathering of journalists amidst party faithfuls at the gate of the sealed office, the Vice National Chairman (South East), Engr Tony Uche Ezekwelu expressed shock that state governor could lock out officers and members of the party that produced him.

Ezekwelu lamented that change of party leaders and control is not in anyway a death sentence but a rejigging of party structure for effective performance and political alertness.

He described the act of sealing the party office as politically motivated, especially when other adjoining/adjacent offices including the Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, the office of the governor’s wife was affected.

According to the party chief, the state government agents, the soldiers and policemen stormed the APGA state headquarters located on Road One of Udoka Housing Estate to carry out the action in the early hours of Tuesday, August 27,2024.

Reacting vide a telephone interview from his Abuja national office, Chief Edozie Njoku, confirmed having received information and reports about the sealing of the party’s head office by Anambra state government officials.

He said he would consult immediately with the National Secretariat of the party on the matter and would take appropriate necessary action immediately.

Hear him, “It is true, I got the information this morning (Tuesday) that the party office was sealed by a government agency.

“So, I am consulting with the National Secretariat. It is after the consultation that we will decide on the action we take.

” I need to know the true facts on the ground, and my Secretaries are making calls; once we have the true picture, we can have a proper and accurate reaction.”

This sealing of the office antic was a sequel to the manipulation of the state independent electoral commission (ANSIEC) which drove away the new leadership of the new Edozie Njoku-led APGA from a top level all-party/Stakeholders interactive meeting in Awka about a week ago.

These scheming and manipulations made political watchers assume that the governor do not have genuine intention for the planned September 28,2024 Council poll in the state.

However, Mr. Christian Aburime, Press Secretary to the Governor when contacted, claimed to be oblivious of the incidence.

He referred journalists to the Special Adviser (SA) on Political Matters, Dr. Alex Obiogbolu.

  • Tension mounts along Ideani, Abatete border over illegal invasion as community sends SOS to Soludo

Tension mounts along Ideani, Abatete border over illegal invasion as community sends SOS to Soludo

Palpable fears have seized the local folks of Oko village in Ideani, Idemili North Council of Anambra State over what they described as “subterranean and covert moves by some unscrupulous land speculators/grabbers(names withheld) visibly aided by top officials of the Anambra State Boundary Commission, masking under various guises to cajole, intimidate, manipulate and harass the villagers into giving up ancestral lands inherited from forebears out of fears.”

In a strongly worded petition to the Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, the security agencies, the Anambra State Assembly, and the traditional ruler of Abatete in concert with the palace of the Eze Ide in-Council of Ideani, the villagers alleged that “the intimidation of our
uninformed villagers was inarguably to prevent them from speaking out or raising the alarm against the land speculators so as to enable them complete their sinister mission of removing the ancient landmarks, beacons and the mutually agreed/set boundary between the neighbouring Abatete and Ideani Communities along the Ogbu(Abatete) and Oko(Ideani)villages, both in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State”.

The petition signed by the Secretary of the Igwe-In-Council -Chief Theo Ikenwa noted that, “our preliminary investigation revealed that these mindless land speculators were said to have been going round with a team of heavily armed police officers and thugs, together with some high ranking officers of the Anambra State Boundary Commission in order to give their criminal enterprise an official imprimatur.

Therefore, “the Ideani Royal Palace hereby issue a note of warning, and caution to the general public against dealing with anyone over any portion of land along the Ogbu Abatete/Oko Ideani borders would be doing so at his/her own risk.

It went further to assert that “those selling or the unsuspecting buyers of any plot of land in the quoted areas are clearly dealing with criminals who have no legal authority or mandate whatsoever to do so. As the Oko village has not enough land for her indigenes, hence none to sell to anyone.

It added that “Ideani Community has not delegated any person/s to discuss, negotiate or deal with anyone on her behalf on this referred land or any other land in the community whatsoever. So, anyone doing so under whatever guise is a criminal and should be treated as such.”

A visit to the referred Abatete/Ideani border region, the troubled area by a team of journalists met a silence of the graveyard where the fear-strcken villagers maintained sealed lips. They apparently see any strange face with deep suspicion, therefore adopted a studied caution when approached for comments.

However, one aged man in his 70s who gave his name simply as Samuel admitted that the villagers saw some known ”notorious land grabbers” on a couple of times in the past one year or thereabout parading the border area with some other persons and heavily armed policemen alleged to be from the Anambra State Boundary Commission demolishing old beacons and planting new ones far into the Ideani side of the boundary.

He also disclosed that unconfirmed information revealed that about five hundred(500) plots of land were so far stolen/seized from the villagers and were already sold off instantly.

Mr Samuel disclosed that amongst the buyers were known troubleshooters from both Abatete and Ideani communities. And that the syndicate were discovered to included active connivance from both communities and officials of Anambra State Boundary Commission.

Ikenwa in the memo counselled anyone who has given out money over lands in the affected area to go for immediate refund, as any documents being circulated in consequence were mere fabrications by the criminal syndicate, and amounted to nothing but only good for the dustbin.

He emphasized that “there is a subsisting/binding agreement between the two neighboring Communities sealed by their traditional rulers years ago.

“Any new marks, boundary or beacons for whatever reason being set by anyone or group of persons under whatever guise on the referred Ogbu/Oko border without recourse to this agreement dated September 22, 1999 is null and void!

Efforts to obtain the reaction of the Anambra Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezi who is the chairman of the state’s Boundary Commission remained unsuccessful as he was said to be on field work for past seven weeks! Even several visits to his office, text messages and phone calls have yielded no positive attention.

However, a top aide in the Boundary Commission confirmed their being aware of the ruffled feathers in the stated border area. “But we are already tackling it”, he disclosed simplistically.

An inquiry at the Abatete Royal Palace, just like that of Ideani revealed they were oblivious of any visit or actions from the Boundary Commission. They told journalists that it was not true that the Government was doing something as no one has contacted either palaces or the town Union leaderships of both communities.

The Eze-In-council of Ideani disclosed that the Save Our Soul letter to the governor and
other agencies was given rise to by the daily complaints and apprehensive concerns of the villagers to the palace.

More so that repeated visits, phone calls and messages efforts to the Deputy Governor had all met a brickwall. So, in consequence they decided to come open in public.

According to some youths in the area, “the pent up anger would burst open any moment as we rarely sleep with two eyes closed these days. We have resolved to meet with anyone coming around to lay claim to any part of the land”, he sarcastically dropped while puffing away his cigarette oozing some strange choking smell.

Onitsha Building collapse probe: Anglican Church asks Soludo to remove 2 members over alleged prejudice

The Niger Diocese of the Anglican Church, owners of the collapsed Centenary Building at the Dennis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha which collapsed in the early hours of June 12,2024 has called on Gov Chukwuma Soludo to drop two prominent professionals from the panel he set up to investigate the reason why the building crashed.

The two members, Prof Akaolisa Ezeagu who chairs the Panel and Engr. Victor Meju, a key member of the panel were reported to have made prejudiced comments publicly and publications following the collapse of the building.

This was contained in a press statement from the Church late last night, the Governor on behalf of the DMGS Old Boys Association and the Diocese, a team of legal practitioners led by Barrister Nnamdi Ibegbu, Senior Advocate of Nigeria SAN, who is their legal advisers expressed open worry that the public and the Diocese may not get a fair hearing with these persons who have clearly demonstrated manifest bias and unprofessionalism on the matter being members of the Panel.

The Legal Team cited the Sun Newspaper publication of June 16, 2024, under the column, Voice of the Nation- with heading “No Approval Given For The Collapsed Onitsha School Building-NBRRI” where Prof Akaolisa Ezeagu made comments and came to the conclusion publicly that there was no authorization from any quarters before the gigantic structure was erected.

Akaolisa, according to them had also in the same publication even before the commencement of investigations attributed the collapse of the building to a poor foundation, which he claimed was as a result of disconnect between the building team and the Technical Engineer.

Prof Akaolisa also in the same publication stated that “preliminary investigation points to foundation problem”.

The Legal Team further cited the Punch Newspaper of 14th June 2024 with headline ” Three More Victims Rescued from Anambra Collapsed Building As Probe Begins” Engr. Sir Victor Meju, a Mechanical Engineer, and Chairman Council of Registered Engineers of Nigeria(COREN), Anambra State Chapter, in the Newspaper stated that “the collapse could be traced to a faulty Foundation and substandard materials used for construction.” He went further to state that the approval was given for a two- storey building, but that the builders decided to add more floors to it.

The Legal Team therefore pointed out to the Governor that Prof Akaolisa and Engr. Meju having acted unprofessionally it was doubtful that they will give unbiased decision in the panel’s work.

Consequently, the Legal Team pleaded with the Governor to most respectfully withdraw the two persons from the panel or in the alternative the two persons be allowed to honorable recuse themselves from the panel, so that Natural Justice, Equity, Good Conscience and Fairness shall prevail in the deliberation and report of the panel.

They however commended the Governor for setting up the Panel of Enquiry to investigate the immediate and remote causes of building collapses in parts of the state.

The Diocese, according to the legal team believes that this laudable initiative by the Governor will help ensure utmost professionalism in the construction sector in the state.

  • Arewa youths back Soludo on N62,000 minimum wage for elected officials

Arewa youths back Soludo on N62,000 minimum wage for elected officials

The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum says it supports the statement by  Gov. Charles Soludo of Anambra that governors and other elected officials should earn only the minimum wage given  the country’s current economic realities .

The National President of the forum, Alhaji Shettima Yerima, said this in an interview with NAN on Monday  in Lagos.

Soludo had, while reacting to the rejection of the proposed N62,000 minimum wage by the Nigeria Governor’s Forum, said governors and other elected officials too should earn  minimum wage to have a  feel what workers are going through in the face of economic challenges.

” Let’s come clean and straight with Nigerians. Nigeria is very poor and broke, but the lifestyle of government and government officials does not show it, especially with the obscene flamboyance in public display,

“The poor are hungry and impatient, let us not annoy them more with our insensitivity. In this case, I agree with Reverend Father Mbaka, who said elected governors should also earn minimum wage. I agree that we should be paid that so that we can feel that as well.”,Soludo had said .

Yerima told NAN that in a country where the disparity between the earnings of political leaders and the average citizen is staggering, such a stance is not only refreshing but also necessary in fostering a more equitable society.

He said: “The statement made by Gov. Charles Soludo of Anambra, regarding the need for governors and other elected officials to earn only the minimum wage in order to reflect the current economic reality of Nigeria is both bold and commendable.

“For too long, Nigeria has been plagued by corruption and a lack of accountability among its political class. Elected officials often receive exorbitant salaries and allowances while the majority of the population struggles to make ends meet.

“This imbalance not only breeds resentment among the populace but also perpetuates a culture of entitlement among those in power.

“By advocating for governors and other elected officials to earn only the minimum wage, the governor is sending a strong message that public service should not be about personal enrichment but  about working towards the common good.”he said.

Yerima said that Soludo’s statement  should be lauded and supported by all Nigerians, who ,he said ,were tired of the excesses and opulence of their leaders while the country continues to face  challenges.

The forum ‘s president said it was improper for leaders not to identify with the people  in the face of  widespread poverty, inadequate infrastructure and a struggling healthcare system.

According to him, elected officials should be  willing to make sacrifices and tighten their belts in solidarity with the people they serve .

“There is the nerd  for elected officials to be in touch with the realities faced by the average Nigerian, as it is only through shared experiences and empathy that true change can be achieved.

“The call is a step in the right direction towards creating a more just and equitable society.

“His bold stance should be supportjed and emulated by leaders at all levels of government, as it signifies a commitment to serving the people rather than exploiting their positions for personal gain.

“As Nigerians, we must demand accountability and integrity from our political leaders,” he said.

  • No resident will get up to N2,500 if we share Anambra’s revenue – Soludo

No resident will get up to N2,500 if we share Anambra’s revenue – Soludo

Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo has said that no resident will receive up to N2,500 if the state’s monthly revenues are to be shared.

Soludo said this while speaking at The Platform, a programme by Lagos-based church, Covenant Nation, to mark the 2024 Democracy Day on Wednesday, June 12.

He emphasised that he shares the pains of Nigerians in these difficult times.

He said: “As a person, for example, I deeply feel the pains of Nigerians at these challenging times especially the over 100 million Nigerians who are multidimensionally poor. Times are hard.”

“Sometimes, I just wish that I can give every resident of Anambra maybe a million naira each to ameliorate the hardship that we have, but the reality is that if we get our entire revenue in a month, both from FAAC and from our IGR and put it on the table, call all our estimated 8.5 million residents and share it, nobody will get up to N2,500.”

Soludo lamented that it is from the same money that can’t go around for N2,500 each that he will still have to pay salaries, gratuities, build roads, and invest in health and education among others.

  • May Day: Anambra workers express sadness over Soludo’s absence at rally ground

May Day: Anambra workers express sadness over Soludo’s absence at rally ground

The absence of Anambra state governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo at the worker’s day rally has angered the entirety of workers in the state.

It was gathered that Soludo was represented at the Alex Ekwueme Square by Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, the state Deputy Governor.

According to the  workers, Soludo stayed away from the function because he was afraid of addressing the long list of needs presented by the NLC and TUC. They insisted he was not a worker friendly governor.

Continuing, the workers said the governor’s absence was deliberate and initially refused to file out for the usual parade which has become synonymous with the rally.

They repeatedly shouted “No” to appeals for them to file out for the parade, insisting that Soludo has never attended workers’ function since he became governor. They eventually grudgingly undertook the parade.

The Deputy Governor who later addressed the protesting workers after several efforts to calm them, assured that their grievances would soon be addressed.

He said: “Governor Soludo as a worker-friendly governor is aware of your plights. You will definitely hear from him soon.”

Earlier, workers in the state had presented a long list of demands. They called on Soludo to suspend the deduction of the contributory pension from their salaries to ensure industrial harmony in the state.

The state Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Humphrey Nwafor, said the workers are worried over what he called improper introduction and implementation of the contributory pension scheme.

He said, “From the beginning of the scheme, monies deducted were rarely remitted to the Pension Fund Administrators (PFA).

“Before the present administration came on board, the state were deducting only the workers part of the contribution even without remitting same to the various PFA’s and refused to pay the government part.

“The organized labour is dissatisfied with the continued deduction even after the reoccurring May Day prayers by organized labour requesting for the suspension
    of the scheme.

“We call on the governor, who we believe is not only worker friendly but hate injustice with passion, as a matter of urgency, to suspend the deduction of the contributory pension from the workers’ salary so as to ensure industrial harmony in the state.”

Just In : Gov Soludo reinstates suspended monarch, reconciles with Obi of Onitsha

Anambra Governor Chukwuma Soludo has reconciled with the Obi of Onitsha Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe after a slight misunderstanding over traditional rulers.

The Governor reinstated the suspended traditional ruler of Neni in Anaocha local government area, Igwe Damian Ezeani.

The monarch, among others, were alleged to have conferred unauthorised chieftaincy titles on some persons, especially Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ubah is believed to be preparing to challenge Soludo for the governorship seat in 2025

Following the suspension and other issues, Igwe Achebe wrote a long letter, condemning Soludo, accusing him of having no regard for traditional institution in the State.

But in a statement in Awka on wednesday, the Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Christian Aburime, said Soludo reinstated the suspended Neni monarch and forgave two others for their alleged infractions.

He said the Governor forgave the traditional rulers’ trespasses in a meeting attended by no fewer than 94 monarchs.

The meeting, according to Aburime, held at the Governor’s Lodge in Amawbia, Awka South Local Government Area.

Aburime said while Igwe Ezeani was reinstated, the monarchs of Ojoto and Aguluezechukwu were forgiven after apologies .
