Soludo offers amnesty to IPOB members, says drop your arms

Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, on Monday offered amnesty to members of IPOB pleading that they should their arms and embrace a meaningful life in society.

The professor of Economics pleaded with them to come out of the different forests in the State and lay down their arms to forge meaningful lives.

Soludo said following the unanimous agreement of the leaders across board and the endorsement of the entire body of Christ, he had decided to end Monday sit-at-home.

He said: “I am pleased to inform our people that today, Monday, April 4, 2022 marks the official end to the “Monday sit-at-home” in Anambra State.

“Shortly, I will be announcing the membership of the Peace and Reconciliation Committee that will look into addressing all areas of sincere challenge, including interfacing with the Federal Government on behalf of all Prisoners of conscience.

“I have also offered Amnesty to all our brothers in the various forests around us. Give us your guns, and trust us to help you forge a meaningful living.”

The Governor stated these on his official Facebook page on Monday.

“We have prayed to God, admonished our people and made commitment to ensuring that everyone concerned gets expeditious justice.

“The task of taking back our dear State and reclaiming the dignity of our collective existence is at the heart of our drive towards a Liveable and Prosperous Homeland.

“This task is a MUST. I call for your support and prayers, as we have resolved to fiercely go after criminal elements who are out to threaten our peace and distort our development,” Soludo said.

Meanwhile, Christians across the Southeast offered prayers to God at 11 am today for peace to return to Igboland in particular and Nigeria in general.

In a statement issued by the representatives of Igbo Archbishops and Bishops on peace and Conflict Resolution, the clergy listed eight prayer points that today’s spiritual exercise was meant to accomplish.

They said the Prayer should focus on the following prayer points:

“That God deliver Nigeria from the violence and evil machinations of those who are hell-bent on destroying the country, especially, as we approach the 2023 elections.

“That God bring about a total deliverance from all manifestations of insecurity in Igboland and restore peace and socio-economic dynamism and vitality in the Igbo homesteads of Nigeria.

“That our son, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and all political agitators in Nigeria, be shown consideration, receive justice and be allowed to defend themselves, in cases of criminal accusations, properly, without drama, prejudice and preconceptions, legally like any other citizens of Nigeria.

“That God cause change of heart in murderers, hoodlums and hooligans and make them recognise the sacredness of human life.

“That God protect our security agents, and give them the courage and determination to apprehend unrepentant agents of violence, death and destruction and bring them to justice, wherever they may be.

“That God restore in our youth, belief in His Commandments, a sense of love and the spirit of charity, so that they can use their energy, knowledge, talents, time and opportunity to build a future for all to His glory alone.

“That by the grace of God, justice, equity, fainess and progress will reign in Nigeria.

“That God give the Federal Government of Nigeria and of our own political leaders, the wisdom, courage and the honesty to constructively and transparently address the challenges facing the Igbo homesteads of Nigeria which are at the root of youth restiveness and violence in our States.”

The day of prayer in Alaigbo was themed: “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn away from their wicked ways, I will forgive their sins and will heal their land (2 Chronicles 7:14).”

In a statement on Sunday, the Bishops said, “We are horrified by the wide-spread insecurity, the continuing and widening destruction of lives and property, and the socio-economic disruption this has caused in our country and, particularly in ala Igbo, in recent times.

“We may be tempted to think that there is nothing we can do to make a difference. But as Christians, we believe that prayers made with sincere faith can move mountains and calm every storm. Our enemy, the devil, would rather have us do any other thing but pray in this critical season of our lives as a people.

“Today, almost all the Igbo homesteads in Nigeria seem to be falling under the control of perpetrators of violence and death. We witness daily the relentless attacks and mindless killings of innocent people either by unknown gunmen, kidnappers, security agents or some unscrupulous and criminal elements. We, your servants in the brotherhood of Christ, share in the deep sorrow and pain of our brethren.”

“Accepting that ‘unless the Lord watches over the city, in vain do watchmen keep vigil’ (Ps 1 27:1 ) we, Igbo Archbishops and Bishops, invite all Christian faithful in ala Igbo and other men and women of goodwill across Nigeria and the world to unleash the force of prayer and call down divine favours from God for a radical change in our society. Nothing compares with the power of God.

“We therefore call on all Igbo sons and daughters, irrespective of their religious affiliations, and all men and women of goodwill to en-masse, cry out to God, our Loving Father, who has the power to put an end to this pain and misery. This prayer campaign will be led by the Archbishops, Bishops and the clergy of all Christian denominations in ala Igbo on Monday, 4. April, 2022.

“It will take place within the premises of the Cathedrals, Churches and prayer houses across ala Igbo by 11:00am and we enjoin the faithful wherever you maybe across Nigeria, or abroad to pause and join in fellowship as we seek the face of our Father.

“Like Nehemiah of old, we your servants invite all, our dear Igbo sons and daughters, to come together especially in this Lenten season, a period of prayer and sober reflection, to rebuild our society through prayer, repentance, hard work and determination.

“We can and must rebuild our lives together in faith because ‘with God all things are possible’ (Mt.19:26). This is a clarion call for Ndigbo to arise and shine for our light has come (Isaiah 60:1). May the blessings of God the Almighty Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be on you all, on our nation and more especially on Igboland. Amen.”

The statement was signed by Most Rev Dr. Anthony J. V. Obinna, Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Owerri; Most Rev. Dr. Emmanuel O. Chukwuma, Bishop of Enugu; Most Rev. Dr. Chibuzor R. Opoko, Methodist Archbishop of Umuahia; Most Rev. Dr. Valerian M. Okeke, Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha; Most Rev Dr. Uma A. Onwunta, Past Principal Clerk, Presbyterian Church Nigeria; Bishop Obi Onubogu, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria; and Rev. Dr. Abraham Nwali, Chairman CAN Southeast Zone.

Soludo submits list of 20 commissioner-nominees to Anambra assembly

Gov. Charles Soludo of Anambra has submitted a list of 20 Commissioner-nominees to the state House of Assembly for approval.

The Speaker of the House, Mr Uche Okafor, announced this at Tuesday’s plenary while reading a letter from Soludo, dated March 28.

Okafor said the governor also sent another letter requesting the confirmation of 15 Special Adviser nominees.

The Speaker, however, asked the House Committee on Screening to screen the commissioner-nominees.

The majority leader moved a motion for the confirmation of the 15 special advisers and they were approved after a voice vote.

Some of the commissioner nominees were Mr Ifeatu Chinedu, Prof. Ofonze Amucheazi, Mr Ifeanyi Okoma, Ms Chiamaka Nnake, Dr Afam Obidike, Mr Patrick Aghamba, Mrs Ifeyinwa Obinabo, Dr Obinna Ugonnadi, Mr Julius Chukwuemeka and Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh.

Others included Mr Paul Nwosu, Dr Foster Ihejiofor, Mrs Patricia Igwebuike, Mr Felix Odimegwu, Mr Chikodi Anara, Prof. Chika Ifemeje, Mr Collins Nwabunwanne, Mr Donatus Onyeji, Mr Anthony Ifeanya and Mr Paulinus Onyeaka.

Also at plenary, the house read a resolution urging Soludo to appeal to the Commissioner of Police in the state to return checkpoints and patrol teams across the state.

The house resolution followed a motion raised by Mr Onyebuchi Offor, representing Ekwusigo Constituency, (PDP).

According to Offor, absence of the checkpoints in the state has increased insecurity which is causing serious threats to lives and property in the state.

BREAKING: Obiano left N300m cash and over N100bn debts – Soludo

Newly sworn-in Governor of Anambra State, Prof Charles Soludo has revealed his predecessor, Willie Obiano left N300 million cash and a debt of over N100 billion as of December 2021.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Soludo made this revelation on a national television programme on Tuesday.

According to Soludo, other financial details from January to date are still unavailable.

He, however, said he expects those documents to be made available as soon as possible, stressing they are public documents.

“In terms of debt I inherited, it runs into hundreds of billions of Naira. In that of cash, we met about 300 million Naira. In fact, let’s not talk about it. Our treasury is funny.

“But I hope we shall make money henceforth to help us fulfill our promises for infrastructure and development of the state. But in terms of what I met in our coffers, my brother, it’s pathetic. Please let us not go there. God will help us.

“The audited account of Anambra State is open source where anyone can see the assets and liabilities. We are still going to do the reconciliation and we intend to have a very transparent public financial management,” Soludo stated.

Meanwhile, Soludo also praised the former Governor saying, “Willie Obiano is an honourable man and he kept his word. He did his best to his utmost and he laid some good foundations and make amendments and continue the trajectory.”

AFFRAY: Nigeria has 2 laws, if Obiano’s wife, Bianca Ojukwu are not arrested – Falana

Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), on Friday, stressed that Nigeria operates two sets of laws, one for the rich and one for the poor, if the wife of Anambra’s ex-Governor- Willie Obiano, Ebelechukwu; and a former Ambassador to Spain, Bianca Ojukwu, are not arrested for the offence of affray.

In his words: “The fact that the two VIPs were not arrested has once again confirmed that Nigeria operates two sets of laws, one for the rich and one for the poor.”

Falana, in a statement, asserted that the offence of affray was committed.

“The offence of affray occurs when two or more people engage in a fight in public. It is punishable under Section 83 of the Criminal Code,” he said.

Recall that both women, at the inauguration of Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo, on Thursday, engaged in a public fight.

The senior advocate argued that the police would have immediately arrested the two of them, if they were not dignitaries.

He added, “No doubt, Governor Soludo has apologised for the embarrassment to which the guests were subjected. But that is not the end of the case as the offence of affray was committed.

“If two workers had committed affray in that ceremony, they would have been arrested, detained, and charged for disrupting the new governor’s inauguration.”

  • UPDATED: Court dismisses false information claims against Soludo, affirms his election as Anambra gov-elect

UPDATED: Court dismisses false information claims against Soludo, affirms his election as Anambra gov-elect

A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a suit to invalidate the election of Professor Charles Soludo in the just concluded Anambra State governorship poll.

The suit seeks to nullify the victory of the governor-elect and the deputy governor-elect, Onyeka Ibezim, on allegations that Soludo provided false information to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Justice Taiwo Taiwo dismissed the suit on Wednesday on grounds that it lacked merit and that it was a waste of the court’s time. He urged the plaintiffs not to use the court as a tool to stagnate democracy.

He also awarded N2 million to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Soludo, and Ibezim who were the second, third, and fourth respondents in the suit. INEC was the first defendant.

The plaintiffs, Adindu Valentine and Egwudike Chukwuebuka, through their lawyer Kelvin Okoko, claimed that Soludo provided false information in the affidavit he submitted to the electoral umpire.

They also alleged that Soludo indicated in the affidavit that he was contesting the Aguata II Constituency seat when, in fact, he was contesting the governorship seat.

Okoko told the court that an affidavit by Ibezim, also submitted to INEC, contained false particulars considering that he stated that he was vying for Awka II Constituency seat.

He argued that having indicated the wrong seat on the form, Soludo violated extant legal provisions and ought to be disqualified.

But counsel for APGA and Soludo, Onyechi Ikpeazu, queried the jurisdiction of the court to entertain the matter which he maintained was statue barred.

He stressed that error in an affidavit could not be a basis to disqualify a candidate from an election.

Ikpeazu stated that the false information claimed by the plaintiffs was not among the grounds stated in the 1999 Constitution for the disqualification of a candidate.

Delivering his judgment, Justice Taiwo dismissed the preliminary objection challenging the competence of the suit and jurisdiction of the court to hear it.

He, however, held that the plaintiffs failed to establish that they had a reasonable cause of action and could not convince the court on how the alleged false information both Soludo and Ibezim supplied to INEC misled them.

The judge held that since the allegation by the plaintiffs were also criminal in nature, it ought to be proved beyond reasonable doubt.

NO, this is not a joke. I am not a comedian. And it is not necessarily to alarm anybody. It’s just to refocus us to possibilities and realities.
I have watched with keen interest, the noisy celebration and jubilation that has been going on in Anambra State in the last three weeks. And I am forced to ask no one in particular,: why is the EFCC-watch-listed, outgoing Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano; the Independent National Electoral Commission and the media leading a Hossana Party? Why are they seemingly glorifying and back-slapping themselves for what they describe as the clear victory of Professor Charles Soludo, the APGA governorship candidate, in the just almost concluded elections? Who has bewitched them?

Why are they trying to fool themselves and the people? Has the election been truly concluded? Who told them so? Are they so unlearned, so forgetful about our ways and politics? I shake my head in pity and have resolved that I will not join them. I refuse to celebrate with people who forget their history so contemptuously. If this were an election in the North of Nigeria where losers take their loss with religious equanimity, I probably will be encouraged to join them. Not Anambra. Gubernatorial cases in the North usually never get taken to the Supreme Court except the Zamfara aberration where the entire candidates of the APC, who swept to victory at the polls, were thrown out by the Supreme Court, not on technicalities but for impunity and clear breach of the law.

Not that I am from Anambra State, not that I am a member of any of the parties that wrestled themselves in the political mud in the state. True, if Nigeria were not as e be, I should consider myself a Lagosian from Lagos State; but I worry because Anambra adjoins my father’s home state and the rascalities there could spill over. You may be right if you think I am just a busy body Nigerian who thinks he has been wizened by the peculiarity of our politics. You may also wish to slam me, think me mad or something, but I refuse and I will not be fooled into believing that Professor Charles Soludo, who some now describe as the acclaimed and overwhelming winner of the elections in Anambra State, will be sworn in as Governor of Anambra State come the end of the tenure of Willie Obiano. None of those jubilating now can say that even if he is sworn in, that he will remain in office as the Governor of Anambra State. Only a fool would think that just because the people of Anambra State overwhelmingly voted for Soludo, giving him indisputable support in 20 of the 21 local government areas in the state, that it is a deal done and dusted. It is not. The last and most important voter has yet to vote.

In the past, I was one of those simplistic people. Not any more. I have been fooled enough. And until the Supreme Court has ruled, casting the deciding vote, based on some known and unknown technicalities, I will not join the Hallelujah choir. And based on the logistics of the times, I refuse to even wait with baited breath for the result of the deciding vote. Anambra will get whoever the Supreme Court decides will be Governor; not the people.

This is even more so since the All Progressive Congress candidate, Emmanuel Nnamdi “Andy” Uba has vowed to pursue the case up to the Supreme Court. Wipe that smug, that smile from your face; stop saying he came a very poor third in the race and his vote count too minuscule to matter. Those who think he is a joker might end up the joke! For truly there is a precedence. There is a governor sitting pretty in Imo who everyone knew had no chance in hell of emerging Governor of that state, left to the voters. But he did eventually. A conclave of seven Supreme Court Justices is all that was needed to cancel the votes and will of the people of Imo State, to catapult an abysmal failure to the pinnacle, to be robed in distinct allure: A testament to the almightiness of the Supreme Court. They showed Nigerians clearly that they can do and undo!

I hear Andy Uba has wisely engaged as mentor and consultant the very wily and cunningly astute political juggernaut, the Supreme Court Governor of Imo State, His Excellency, the Distinguished Chief Hope Uzodinma. As everyone knows, Uzodinma is a veteran Supreme Court litigant and has two important Supreme Court victories to his name. This combination is deadly, Andy himself being a victory snatcher of sorts too. Remember his purported election in 2007 as Governor of Anambra State even when the then incumbent, Peter Obi, still had three years outstanding to run as sitting governor of the state? Remember his road to the Senate? A rabble rouser, with eyes firmly fixed on the Governor’s mansion in Anambra since 2007, plotting his way to the Supreme Court might just surprise the unwise celebrants of Anambra.

A week after I wrote the above, news suddenly came that the APC under whose flag Andy Uba contested the governorship election had decided not only to go to court to contest the results of the election, but indeed to pursue it up to the Supreme Court. They have some technical issues to hang their claim to the governorship of Anambra on: Professor Chukwuma Soludo, as if in a trance when filling the documents for the governorship poll, filled in Aguata II instead of for governor of Anambra State. The Andy Uba camp is bubbling with confidence that the Supreme Court, which has used similar technicalities to knock out assumed winners of elections in other jurisdictions, will live up to its recent election reputation: Andy Uba who spectacularly failed to impress Anambra voters, coming a miserable third, unless by the intervention of God, will be catapulted and sworn in, March 2022, as Governor.

DR OKEZIE IKPEAZU MY GOVERNOR OF THE DECADE AND BEYOND

There is something in the ebullient and chubby governor of Abia State, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, that should draw national and international attention to Abia State. He is such a caring governor! For this man’s goodness of heart, a lot of family are holding thanksgiving services in churches and shrines for their great fortune in having Dr Ikpeazu as their governor. Take his latest act of generosity, for example. Every woman who delivers in any of the state’s primary health care centres hits the good fortune of winning a huge lottery from Governor Ikpeazu’s government. They get a N500 reward, yes, an eye popping N500! Every single one of them. I assume, any fortunate lady who gives birth to twins, or triplets or quadruplets will get the governor going into a spasm of heartfelt adulation and he will waste no time in awarding each child a whopping N500. The mothers and indeed the families so fortunate will be beside themselves in excitement and monumental gratitude.

Yet this is one of the under reported achievements of this great governor. If Okezie Ikpeazu had not come out on national television to celebrate this huge dividend of democracy, no one would. And we must all congratulate him and urge all governors everywhere in the world to emulate this outstanding achievement of this much beloved governor. Just imagine every governor in the world giving an equivalent of one American Dollar, $1, to each mother. The fear, however, will be that all the family planning programmes will meet their waterloo. The rush for Ikpeazu’s generosity will lead to a remarkable spike in the number of children delivered worldwide.

One dollar or N500 can indeed do a lot for some of the downtrodden people of the world, especially in Abia State. It can fund an Okada ride back home for mother and child for instance. Or fund one sumptuous breakfast, the type they eat in Abia State government house for mother and child. It can also help supplement a mother’s baby milk if the N500 is used to buy pap, Ogi, akamu, but without milk for the baby. This and more are part of the reasons it is praiseworthy. In the final analysis, for the poor mothers of Abia State, Ikpeazu’s N500 jackpot is the difference between winning the lottery and remaining poor. Good judgment will always favour Ikpeazu and his novel generosity.

I don’t want to talk about the many roads in the state and their condition and the impact or not of the Ikpeazu government on them. I will also not look at all the other indices of development. Suffice it to say that Ikpeazu is one governor who can be said to have been fair to all the senatorial zones in the state. Unlike Orji Uzor Kalu and Theodore Orji who, some say, massively developed their zones to the neglect of all others, Ikpeazu cannot be so accused. The state of the roads in Aba and around the second biggest market in the South east, Ariara market, and in all the Ngwa area of the state cannot be said to have benefited much more than in the other zones. Ikpeazu didn’t construct or refurbish them so any accusation from the other zones can only be bad belly.

In fact, someone recently said that, that like President Buhari, Okezie Ikpeazu is trying his best; that the problem of the state is the continuation of the series of bad governance which have bedevilled the state since this our new attempt at democratic rule. His, it can be argued, is not peculiar.

That is why for this singular achievement with maternal mothers, I know the world would soon celebrate this wonderful governor of Abia and his novel empowerment of mothers with N500 stuck in a maternity package pack. Forgive me, if you disagree but Ikpeazu is my governor of the decade even if for all the wrong reasons. He is a true representative of the level of leadership Nigeria is at now. And as they say, the people truly deserve the government they elect.
