Photo: Court sentences mother, son to 12 years for duping American of $82,570

The Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday sentenced Mrs Damilola Ahmed Adeyeri and her son, Alaba Kareem Adeyeri, to 12 years’ imprisonment each for duping an American of $82,570.

Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke convicted the duo following their plea of guilty to four counts of “fraudulent trick business email compromise” during their arraignment on Tuesday.

He sentenced each defendant to three years’ imprisonment on each of the four counts filed against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The judge said the sentences would run concurrently.

This means Mrs Adeyeri and her son will spend a maximum of only three years in correctional services custody.

EFCC counsel Bilikisu Buhari told the court that mother and son conspired with one Kareem Russell, still at large, to defraud the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of American Cranes Manufacturing Company.

She said they committed the offence in June 2017 and were arrested on September 6, 2019.

The prosecutor said Mrs Adeyeri and her son carried out the fraud by “dishonestly representing yourselves as the CEO of American Cranes Manufacturing Company and thereafter you sent an email from personal@managements-securemail-office-portal.online with intent to gain advantage to yourselves.”

She the convicts acted contrary to Sections 27(1)(a) and 23(3) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act, 2015 and were liable to be punished under Section 22(1) of the same Act.

The offences were also said to have been contrary to sections 421 and 422 of the Criminal Code Act Cap C38.

Buhari also called an EFCC investigator, Idi Musa as witness.

Musa testified that sometime in April 2019, the commission received a petition from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of America, stating that the official email address of American Cranes Manufacturing Company was hacked and the sum of $82, 570. 00 was lost to the fraudsters.

He told the court that the FBI reported that there was a syndicate of fraudsters who defraud companies through business e-mail compromise and obtain millions of dollars from American citizens.

Idi said Damilola was arrested on September 6, 2019, after which his mother was apprehended when she went to withdraw money from the bank upon hearing that EFCC was investigating her son.

She purchased properties in the name of her son with the money made from the fraud.

The court heard that the monies stolen by the convicts were used to acquire properties in choice areas of Lagos, and some cash was also found in their bank accounts.

Before sentencing, the prosecutor pushed for the judge to apply the maximum sentence possible on the convicts to serve as a deterrent.

Responding, Justice Aneke agreed that although the convicts immediately admitted guilt and showed remorse, he had a duty to apply punishment in accordance with the law to serve as a deterrent to others.

But he said he would temper justice with mercy because the convicts, by pleading guilty immediately, had saved the court’s time.

“Consequently, I hereby sentence each of the convicts to three years on counts one, two, three and four. The sentences are to run concurrently,” Justice Aneke held.

The judge further ordered that all the properties and monies recovered from the convicts be forfeited to the Federal Government and upon applications by the victims, be restituted to them.

The bigwigs in Nigeria’s politics, top brass in government and captains of industry converged on the ancient city of Kano on Friday for the Wedding Fatiah of the first son of Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, the President of the Senate and his bride Amani.

Amani is the daughter of a business man, Alhaji Bala Umar, a Kano indigene.

The marriage ceremony began on Wednesday with the bridal shower or Kamu in Hausa, followed by a dinner on Thursday. Both events held at Meena Event Centre in Kano.

The climax of the event was the Wedding Fatiah which held on Friday at the popular Al Furquan Mosque, GRA, Kano.

It was like a parade of who is who in Nigeria’s politics at the wedding Fatiah which was conducted by the Chief Imam of the mosque, Dr Bashir Aliyu Omar Sadaki.

Minister of Communications, Dr Isa Ali Pantami, at the ceremony, gave out in marriage Amani while the Yobe State Governor, Mai Bala Buni received the bride.

  • Maina, son to remain in Kuje prison till January 20

Maina, son to remain in Kuje prison till January 20

Abdulrasheed Maina, former Chairman, defunct Pension Reform Task Team (PRTM), and his son, Faisal, are to remain in Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja, till January 2020.

Justice Okon Abang, who gave the order yesterday, adjourned hearing on Abdulrasheed’s bail variation application till January 13, 2020, while Faisal’s trial continuation was adjourned till January 20, 2020.

Earlier yesterday, Justice Abang had noted that though it would not be convenient for the court to take trial, bail variation arguments would be taken.

EFCC’s lawyer Mohammed Abubakar said he was ready for trial continuation and that the next witness was in court.

Abdulrasheed’s lawyer Mohammed Monguno reminded the court of the pending application filed on December 6, 2019, for bail variation.

Abubakar urged the court to adjourn hearing on the bail variation application because the defence had just served on him its further affidavit the same day.

“We apply that the hearing be adjourned to enable us react to their further affidavit,” he said.

Monguno, who described the motion as “simple application,” said the call for the adjournment was to delay proceeding.

“We were the ones who filed further affidavit in response to their counter-affidavit. We urge your lordship not to grant their prayer because it is an attempt to delay this matter,” he said.

Deborah Apete, counsel to Maina’s company, Common Input Investment Limited, adopted the submission of Monguno, saying: “The motion is ripe for hearing.”

Abubakar, in his argument, said that Maina’s application was brought relevant to provision of ACJA and 1999 constitution.

He said there was no provision in ACJA or the constitution that precludes ones from filing further counter-affidavit in reaction to further affidavit filed by the applicant.

“What the first defendant filed was a further and better affidavit.

“Section 36 of 1999 Constitution affords us the right to file further counter-affidavit,” he said.

Abubakar said Maina’s application was filed on December 17 but they deliberately served him December 18 in order to deny EFCC the right to fair hearing by way of responding to the further and better affidavit.

Anunobi made this known during an interview on TV Contential.

She said: “I have to be happy, because God tells me that, in all things, we should give Him thanks. • Trump confirms killing of Osama Bin Laden’s son

Trump confirms killing of Osama Bin Laden’s son

Hamza bin Laden, the son of Osama bin Laden has been killed in a US Operation, President Donald Trump confirmed today.

Trump said in a statement released by the White House that bin Laden was killed in a counter-terrorism operation near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, though did not provide an exact date for the death.

Hamza last made a public statement in 2018.

In February, there was a report suggesting his death.

Then Defense Secretary Mark Esper in late August spoke about Hamza’s possible death in an interview with Fox News.

“I don’t have the details on that. And if I did, I’m not sure how much I could share with you,” he added when asked if the U.S. had any role in his death.

“The loss of Hamza bin Ladin not only deprives al-Qa’ida of important leadership skills and the symbolic connection to his father, but undermines important operational activities of the group. Hamza bin Ladin was responsible for planning and dealing with various terrorist groups,” Trump said in the statement.

Bin Laden, buoyed by the fame of his father, was given a prominent role in the terrorist group that masterminded the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The State Department earlier this year offered a $1 million reward for information leading to his capture and labeled him an “emerging” leader in al-Qaeda.

Hamza bin Laden had married the daughter of a senior leader in al-Qaeda who was charged by a federal grand jury for his role in the 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa, and intelligence seized from Osama bin Laden’s hiding place in Pakistan after the raid that killed him suggested his son was being groomed to eventually head the terrorist group.

Bin Laden included threats to Saudi Arabia and a call to revolution in his last public statement made in a video in 2018, according to the United Nations.

He was believed to have been in his early 30s.
