Pandemonium as landlord kills tenant’s four-year-old son with pestle

The Ogun State Police Command says it has arrested a landlord in Onipanu, Ota, in the Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area of the state, Sunday Omosule, for alleged killing a son of one of his tenants with a pestle.

The deceased was four-year-old Joseph Akpan.

According to a report by The Punch, the landlord had allegedly gone berserk and started chasing his tenants with the pestle until he caught up victim’s mother.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said as he caught with the mother who was carrying the boy, he hit the mother in the hand and hit the baby on the head with the pestle.

He said, “The landlord was arrested following a distress call to the police at Onipanu division.”

Oyeyemi said the Divisional Police Officer, Onipanu division, Sangobiyi Johnson, led his men to the scene where the suspect was arrested.

On interrogation, he said the suspect claimed to be under spiritual attacks.

Oyeyemi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said, “The mother of the deceased, who sustained injury in the attack, has been taken to a hospital where she is responding to treatment.

The remains of the victim have been deposited in a mortuary.”

  • Court orders Atiku’s son, estranged wife to agree on children’s upkeep allowance

A Lagos High Court sitting in Igbosere on Friday ordered Aminu Atiku and his ex-wife, Unmi Bolori, to agree on the monthly upkeep allowance he would be paying for the two children of the severed union.

Justice Kazeem Alogba described the dispute by the estranged couple’s over the N250,000 per month as ordered by a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, to be paid by Atiku as a waste of time.

Aminu, son of a former Vice-President, Abubakar Atiku, had approached the court to suspend the N250,000 child allowance, describing it as “onerous.”

He argued that he was already satisfying all his children’s needs, a view which was disputed by Bolori.

In his ruling, Justice Kazeem Alogba upheld Aminu’s application, noting that Atiku had presented evidence to show that he had been “substantially meeting” the educational, medical, feeding and other needs of the ex-couple’s daughter, Ameera, 11, and the son, Aamir, 7.

Alogba held: “I am satisfied that the applicant has very substantially complied with the lower court’s order. I grant the stay of execution pending the determination of the appeal.”

The judge, further, urged counsel in the case, Messers M.O Enitan for Atiku and N. E. Okoh for Bolori, to advise their clients to put heads together to arrive at a reasonable sum in the children’s “interest instead of wasting time on litigating the appeal”.

He adjourned hearing of the substantive suit until June 14.

The ruling followed an appeal filed by Atiku’s son seeking to upturn, among others, the Jan. 10 decision of Chief Magistrate Kikelomo Ayeye of the Tinubu Magistrates’ Court which granted Bolori full custody of both children.

Bolori, daughter of a Maiduguri businessman, Alhaji Bukar Bolori, had married Aminu in Ghana in 2007, and by 2011, the couple had separated.

On Oct.18, 2017, Chief Magistrate Ayeye temporarily remanded Aminu in a transit cell within the court’s premises after citing him for alleged contempt.

Atiku had allegedly kept Aamir from his mother, contrary to an Oct. 11, 2017 order of the court.

There was further a drama at the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court on Jan.10 following Chief Magistrate Ayeye’s judgment.

The boy’s mother claimed that Aminu snatched Aamir and drove off with him.

The issue was, however, resolved the following day when Amir was handed over to Bolori at the domestic wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja.

  • Father, son in court for allegedly stealing N2.4m

A 61-year-old father, Femi Adelegan, and his son, Daniel Adelegan, were on Thursday arraigned at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing N2.4 million belonging to their employer.

The father, who resides at Mowe Ibafo area of Ogun, and Daniel, 30, who lives at Ori Oke, Magodo, Lagos State, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Raphael Donny, told the court that the accused committed the offences between August 2015 and October 2017.

Donny said that the accused, who were loan officers at Deva Access and Empowerment International Ltd., located at No. 30, Iju Road, Agege, Lagos, defrauded the company of N2.4 million.

“When the company audited the company’s account, they noticed that the sum of N2.4 million was missing.

“The company reported the matter to the Police; the accused were arrested and confessed that they had converted the money to their own use,’’ he said.

The offences contravened Sections 411 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate, Mrs A. O. Adebayo, admitted each of the accused to N500,000 bail with two sureties each in like sum.

She adjourned the case until May 22, for hearing.

  • We’re committed to carrying out reforms in ICT sector – Minister

Mr Adebayo Shittu, the Minister of Communications, says the ICT Roadmap, if well implemented, will facilitate the development of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry.

The Minister expressed the Federal Government’s commitment to the reform of ICT sector in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said the implementation of the ICT Roadmap of 2017 to 2020, would also help to increase the sector’s contribution to the nation’s Gross Domestic Products (GDP) through improved and better service delivery.

He said that the roadmap came about as a result of views, proposals and recommendations of various stakeholders in the industry as to where the industry should be heading to.

According to him, the roadmap defines the different roles that the different agencies of the ministry should undertake in order to use ICT to develop Nigeria.

“The time NIPOST is reformed and became fully commercialised, it would have not less than five new companies.

“One of them is NIPOST Banking and Insurance Company, NIPOST Property and Development Company, NIPOST Transport and Logistics Company, NIPOST e-Commerce Services and NIPOST e-Government Services,” he said.

Shittu said the document also recommended two additional satellites for NIGCOMSAT in order to expand the infrastructure of the agency which currently has one satellite in orbit.

He said by the time the agency’s infrastructure was consolidated, it would stop Nigerian entities from patronising foreign satellite companies, thereby reducing capital flight from the country.

He, however, noted that having complied with the objectives of the roadmap, the supervisory, mentoring and regulatory roles of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had improved substantially with regards to the telecom operations.

‘’With regards to the internet operations, NITDA as a supervisor and regulator has also improved tremendously having regards to the ideas that are contained in the roadmap,” he added.

On what the ministry is doing on issue of importation of fake and sub-standard phones into Nigeria, the minister said plans were underway to bring-up a legal framework against such practice.

“For now, the thinking is still on as to how to bring a legislation which will enforce the customisation of phones that are coming in,” he said.

He however acknowledged that the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the Nigerian Customs Service had a lot to do in ensuring that the right products were brought into the country.

“And you will agree with me that it is not really the business of this ministry.

“It is the business of the SON and of the Customs to ensure that only the right things are brought in and the appropriate customs duties are paid on them,” he said.

Shittu said he would love to be remembered as a minister who was the most acceptable by the stakeholders in the ICT industry and a minister who was ready to welcome every new idea by everybody.

“I want to be remembered as a minister who came here, who was the most accessible minister by members of the general public; the minister who saw himself not as a boss but as a servant of the public.

“And a minister, who was the most acceptable by the stakeholders in the ICT industry.

“I am happy to say I have already achieved that because initially when I was appointed, stakeholders protested because I was not an ICT person but barely one and half years thereafter, I was given an award of fellow of the Nigerian Computer Society.

“So a minister in whose time, NIPOST became repositioned, became reformed and became commercialised to such an extent that new companies never heard of in the history of any postal service, became established for Nigeria.

“So, these are some of the things I hope before I leave office I would have achieved and much more,” he said.

  • Atiku’s son drags ex-wife to court over children’s custody

    …Rejects N250,000:00 monthly upkeep

Aminu Atiku, son of former Vice President Abubakar Atiku, on Thursday asked a Lagos High Court in Igbosere to upturn a Magistrates’ Court decision awarding custody of his two children to his ex-wife, Unmi Fatima Bolori.

Aminu told Justice Kazeem Alogba that the lower court disregarded his right to fair hearing before granting judgment in Bolori’s favour.

Neither he nor Bolori was in court.

On January 10, Chief Magistrate Kikelomo Ayeye, of the Tinubu Magistrates’ Court, granted Bolori full custody of the ex-couple’s daughter, Ameera (11) and son, Aamir (7).

The court held that Aminu failed to file a response to Bolori’s application for child custody.

But Aminu, through his counsel, Oyinkan Badejo, filed two applications – one seeking leave to appeal the lower court’s judgment and the other for a stay of further execution of its terms.

The first application, a motion on notice of January 31, was pursuant to Section 70 of the Magistrates’ Court Law 2009, and supported by a 16-paragraph application.

Badejo said: “In response to whether the applicant has shown sufficient ground for the grant of the application, there is not more sufficient ground than the party’s right to fair hearing.

We arrived at the Magistrates’ Court at 12.30 pm, believing the matter was for mention at 1pm.”

She contended that the lower court erred by hearing and granting Bolori’s application for custody on a date the suit was fixed for mention.

In the February 20 application, Badejo urged the court to vary conditions attached to the custody order.

According to the lower court’s order, Aminu is to pay Bolori N250,000 monthly for the upkeep of the children, beginning January 2018.

Chief Magistrate Ayeye also ordered Aminu to carry out medical insurance on each child, among others.

But Badejo said: “We are not seeking a stay of the execution of the judgment. But some of the terms were onerous. We were asked to pay N250,000 for the upkeep of two young children, medical allowances, etc. We find that rather onerous.”

Bolori’s counsel, O. N. Olabisi and Ethel Okoh opposed her, citing, among others, the interest of the children.

But in Justice Alogba granted Aminu leave to appeal.

The judge adjourned further hearing till May 17 and June 14.

    The incident happened in Kano.

Some of them followed him into the compound, shot him and abducted one of his sons.”

The second son was said to have ran to the shop to inform their neighbours.

  • Ease of Doing Business: NPA orders NAFDAC, SON to vacate seaports in 24 hours

Ease of Doing Business: NPA orders NAFDAC, SON to vacate seaports in 24 hours

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has given a 24-hour ultimatum to officials of unauthorised government agencies to vacate the seaports or risk being arrested.

The directive is in line with a new order issued to NPA by the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC).

PEBEC directed NPA to ensure strict compliance to the October 26, 2011, presidential directive on agencies permitted to operate in the ports.

The NPA, therefore, reiterated that only eight federal government agencies were allowed to operate and have physical representation at all port locations in the country.

General Manager, Corporate and Strategic Communications of NPA, Abdullahi Goje, in a statement, said the agencies allowed representation at the ports were: Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA); Nigerian Customs Service (NCS); Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA); Nigeria Police; Department of State Security (DSS); Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Port Health and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) should remain at the ports.

The directive stated that other agencies not mentioned in the list should remain outside the ports premises as the Nigerian Customs Service, which is the lead agency for inspection of cargoes, had developed standard operating procedures to facilitate their seamless operation.

The NPA remains committed to the determination of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to enhance the ease of doing business in the country and the improvement of conditions under which business is carried out in all ports across the country.

The NPA solicits for the kind support of all agencies and stakeholders in the Nigerian maritime sector towards actualising the noble goal of making Nigeria a destination of choice for all legitimate businesses,” Goje said.

The affected agencies include National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON), among others.

  • Atiku’s son runs away with own child after court awards ex-wife custody of kids

Aminu, the son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, on Wednesday runs away with his son, Aamir, 7, after a ruling awards the custody of the children of his failed marriage to his ex-wife, Fatima Bolori.

Bolori alleged that Aminu snatched Aamir from her and drove off with him.

The incident was said to have occurred at the Tinubu Magistrate Court in Lagos, about 1:59pm, minutes after Aminu lost custody of his daughter, Ameera, 9, and Aamir to Bolori.

The Chief Magistrate, Kikelomo Ayeye, had granted Bolori full custody of the children after Aminu failed to file a response to her application for child custody.

The court ordered Aminu to pay Bolori N250,000 monthly for the upkeep of the children, beginning from this month.

It also ordered Aminu to, among others, carry out medical insurance on the children.

Bolori had in November 2017 filed an application for child custody.

Chief Magistrate Ayeye ruled: “The respondent failed to file a response.

“In view of the deliberate absence of the respondent and his legal team, I am constrained to make these following orders in default of respondent’s presence and in the best interest of the children to wit:
“Unmi Fatima Bolori is hereby granted full custody of Aamir Abubakar Sadiq Aminu Atiku (seven years) and Ameera Amina Atiku (nine years).
“The applicant is allowed to reside with the children at her residence at Katampe Extension, Abuja.
“The applicant is ordered to put the children in schools suited for their educational needs in Abuja.
“Access is granted to the respondent to visit his children in Abuja and request for the children to spend holidays with him.
“The respondent is ordered to pay monthly upkeep for the children in the amount of N250,000 monthly beginning January 2018.
“The Respondent is ordered to effect medical insurance on each of the children.”

  • I will enroll my six-year-old son in public school – El-Rufai

…says other senior government officials in the state must follow suit

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has said his administration will ensure that senior officials of government enrol their children in government owned schools across the state in 2018 to further improve the quality of education in the state.

The governor explained that he will lead by example by ensuring that his six-year-old son is enrolled in a government school when the school reopens later in January.

El-Rufai revealed his plan in a state broadcast on Thursday to explain reforms being undertaken by the state government.

Speaking on his plans, Mr. El-Rufai said, “As we make progress, we will require our senior officials to enrol their children in public schools. And I will by personal example ensure that my son that will be six years of age in 2019 will be enrolled in a public school in Kaduna State, by God’s grace.

He said one of his goals is to have only graduates as primary school teachers, arguing that the educational attainments of a country like Finland shows that this is the way to go.

We do not agree that we should restore Grade 2 teacher training. But we must improve the intellectual capacity of teachers that the NCE should give way ultimately to first and second degrees as minimum teaching qualifications. Kaduna ranks first among the northern states, and 12th in the country overall in WAEC scores. We can be the best if we do not relent in reforming our schools,” Mr. El-Rufai said.

He said public schools in Nigeria lack facilities and good teachers.

We said many schools did not have roofs, doors, windows, water and toilets, and we promised to fix it. As soon as we took office, we also sadly learnt that at least 50 per cent of school pupils sat on floors due to the absence of desks and chairs. Therefore, under no circumstance would we subjugate the future of the two million pupils in public primary schools, and those coming after them, to the interests of unqualified teachers,” he said.

He said the attitude of indifference to public education resulted in the recruitment of teachers at local government level without adherence to standards.

We found that unqualified teachers entered the system because the recruitment of teachers was politicised. The local government council chairmen and other senior politicians and bureaucrats saw teaching as a dumping ground for their thugs, supporters and other unsuitable persons. In many instances, no examinations or interviews were conducted to assess the quality of recruits. Political patronage, nepotism and corruption became the yardstick, thus giving unqualified persons a way in,” he said.

Mr. El-Rufai said the current government has spent more than N625 million on training since 2015 noting that thousands of teachers were trained in literacy, numeracy, reading skills and in other subjects of the teaching profession.

The competency test results clearly showed that the training programmes had recorded, at best, only limited impact. The results of the competency test profoundly disappointed us. It showed that much of the monies spent on training teachers since 2011 had been wasted,” he said.

He said the competency test revealed that many of the teachers do not have the basic knowledge, and are incapable of imparting what they do not have.

The honest truth is that many of these teachers should themselves be adult education students, being taught basic literacy and numeracy. The government came to the conclusion that it is not further training that teachers who cannot score 75 per cent in a Primary Four exam require. In these circumstances, the government took the difficult, but necessary decision, to disengage all the teachers who did not meet the 75 per cent threshold. This has been done in accordance with the terms of their employment, and their entitlements will be payed, as appropriate,” he said.

He said that in place of the 22,000 teachers disengaged by government due to failure in the competency test, 25,000 qualified teachers are to be recruited.

This week, SUBEB conducted tests for the over 43,000 applicants that have indicated interest in the teaching positions. The ongoing recruitment process will sieve these applicants to ensure that only bonafide teachers are recruited.

Education is a leveller, it gives the children of the poor a chance to rise above the condition of their birth. And a nation of well-educated people offers immense opportunities for social mobility, enabling the poor to move out of poverty by the sheer force of talent and hard work,” he concluded.
