  • ‘Buhari is my son, I can bear his sickness’ – Oluwo of Iwo

    …Says

President must complete eight years tenure

    #ResumeorResign protesters are not sane

The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Adbulrahsheed Akanbi, on Thursday said he was willing to bear President Muhammadu Buhari’s sickness for him because he (Buhari) is his (Oluwo) son.

The Oluwo said this when he presided over a special prayer session organised for the president by Muslims, Christians and traditionalists at his palace in the town.

While addressing worshipers at the prayer session, the monarch said it was necessary for citizens to pray for their leaders.

He prayed that the president would recover and be sound so he could govern the country for eight years.

As I have prayed for Buhari today, new life has come for him,” he prayed. “He must spend eight years in power despite all obstacles from opposition.”

He also said he was willing to bear any sickness that is ailing the president, saying that those who love the country must love the leaders as well.

It is painful that those who launched that campaign of ‘Resume or Resign’ are not patriotic as they claimed,” he said.

They politicised the campaign which shouldn’t be. Buhari is my son and I won’t be happy when people are wishing him dead.

If any civil servant or police officer falls sick, will you advise them to resign? Those who are clamouring for Buhari’s resignation are not sane.

Nigerians don’t love those that love them but they are passionate about those that hate them.

All those who are wishing him dead and those who are clamouring for his resignation shall fall sick.”

The president of Christian Association of Nigeria, Iwo, Caleb Ayoola, led the Christian prayer; the Iwo Chief Imam, Abdulfatai Olododo, led the Muslim prayers and Ojetunde Ajibowu, led traditionalists in prayers.

The Oluwo and other traditional rulers later rose on their feet to dance as the Christians began a thanksgiving praise for the president.

Mr. Olododo, the Imam, in his remarks, emphasised the need for religious tolerance among all religious groups.

The CAN Chairman, read from 2Chronicles 7:14 noted that God is the utmost healer urging people in positions of authority to always show obedience to God’s directive and pray for peace and harmony in the land.

Conducting the traditional prayers, Ojetunde Ajibowu, offered prayers for the president, Governor Rauf Aregbesola and the Oluwo of Iwo.

The wife of the president, Aisha Buhari, who was represented by the Wife of the Secretary to the State Government of Oyo State, Halimot Alli, appreciated the Oluwo and Nigerians for their relentless prayers for her husband.

She also urged them to continue their support for the present administration.

  • Kwara 2019: My son won’t contest as governor – Saraki

Kwara 2019: My son won’t contest as governor – Saraki

The President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, has ruled out the possibility of his son participating in the governorship race in Kwara in 2019.

He said, at a Forum in Abuja that it was untrue that his son was being groomed as the next governor of the state.

According to Saraki, “the boy is not interested in politics. That is not in the offing at all; I am sure he doesn’t even want to hear politics at all”.

“You know it is not easy for children who are born to politicians, especially at this time, to embrace politics.

“When I was much younger, we were insulated from some of the political issues, and because we didn’t read the newspapers, we didn’t know what was happening.

“I reluctantly went into politics, you can go and check. Once or twice, I was given the form to run for House of Representatives, and I remember I just travelled and disappeared for months.

“After seeing what my father had been through I thought to myself that this is not for me,” he said.

Saraki, however, said that the most important thing for him in the state was the legacy which had been left and the continuity and good relationship between former and the serving governor.

He said that his successor had also done a good job in transforming the state by creating an environment for entrepreneurship.

“In the agricultural sector, we have done a lot of things that drive commercial activities which are not in the blueprint of the country.

“Even in the universal health coverage which we are now talking about at the national level, I started that when I was governor, and now my governor has continued and built on that.

“This shows the importance of continuity and stability and today, we thank God that we are one of those states where there is a very good relationship between former governor and current governor.” he said.

He denied insinuation that pensioners in the state were still being owed arrears dating back to when he was governor.

“Majority of the amounts still being owed are at the local government level, most of the state level pensions are not outstanding.

“There might be issues with pensions here and there but I don’t know the details. I know that the arrears and liability are at local government level, not at state government level,” Saraki stated.

  • We are committed to ridding Nigeria of used, expired tyres – SON

The Coordinator of Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) in Kwara, Mr Sunday Yashim has said the organization is determined to rid Nigeria of imported fairly used and expired tyres.

Yashim made the commitment on Friday in Ilorin while speaking with newsmen after a raid on tyre shops where over 1, 000 tyres were confiscated.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the raid was led by the SON coordinator and was accompanied by men and officers of the Nigeria Police, Civil Defence and Federal Road Safety.

The operation was carried out in Sabo Oke, Maraba, Ajase Ipo Road and Offa Garage areas of Ilorin where three shops were sealed.

Yashim said SON embarked on the raid to rid the state of imported fairly used tyres.

“We want to ensure that “tokunbo tyres’’ are no longer used by any commercial vehicle or any vehicle at all; by so doing our tyre industry will be revived,” he said.

According to him, majority of accidents on Nigerian roads are caused by expired tyres brought into the country illegally.

Yashim said that the risks associated with using expired tyres were many of which the common one was the loss of lives as a result of burst tyres on speed.

He said the tyres were not made for Nigerian weather, adding that in Europe where the tyres came from, there were three to four seasons and each season had specified tyres for it.

“In Europe, tyres are produced based on the seasons, for example winter tyres will be used only for winter season after which they will be removed from the vehicle.

“Nigeria is in tropical region, tyres meant for winter in Europe cannot be used in tropical region like Nigeria.

“It will not last long and it is dangerous as our temperature will increase its pressure and burst,” he said.

Yashim said that it was due to the influx of fairly used tyres that the two major tyre manufacturers in Nigeria, Dunlop and Michelin, relocated to Ghana.

“You can imagine the number of people that have lost their jobs as a result of the influx of used and expired tyres in the country,” he said.

The SON coordinator said that Nigeria had lost billions of naira to Ghana in taxes which these two companies were paying.

  • Russian mails: Trump defends son, says he is ‘open, transparent and innocent’

President Trump on Wednesday stepped up his defense of his eldest son days after revelations surfaced regarding Donald Trump Jr.’s arrangement of a 2016 meeting with a Russian lawyer said to have damaging information on Democrat Hillary Clinton.

Taking to Twitter early in the morning, the president praised Trump Jr.’s performance Tuesday night during a Fox News interview in which he sought to play down the significance of an email exchange before the meeting in which he welcomed the assistance of a “Russian government attorney.”

“My son Donald did a good job last night,” the president wrote of his son’s appearance with Fox News host Sean Hannity. “He was open, transparent and innocent. This is the greatest Witch Hunt in political history. Sad!”

Earlier, Trump, who’s remained out of public view since Saturday — retweeted the assessment of another Fox News host, Jesse Watters, who wrote that Trump Jr. was “the victim” in the episode.

Trump remained silent over the weekend as news initially broke about the encounter with the lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, who on Tuesday said she had not sought the meeting on behalf of the Kremlin and was interested in a different subject altogether: Russian adoptions.

Earlier Tuesday, as the New York Times was preparing to publish another story on the episode, Trump Jr. made public an email exchange in which he was told by an intermediary that the “high level” information he would be offered about Clinton was “part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump” and would be “highly useful for your father.”

The younger Trump appeared to relish the opportunity. “If it’s what you say I love it especially later in the summer,” he wrote back.

Trump on Tuesday offered only a brief defense of his son, with deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders reading a statement from the president in which he said Trump Jr. “is a high-quality person and I applaud his transparency.”

Later Tuesday, Trump tweeted to his 33.7 million Twitter followers that they should watch his son’s interview on “Hannity.”

During the interview, Trump Jr. said that the meeting came when “things are going a million miles per hour” in the campaign and that nothing concrete resulted.

“In retrospect I probably would have done things a little differently,” Trump Jr. said, adding: “For me, this was opposition research. They had something, you know, maybe concrete evidence to all the stories I’d been hearing about, probably underreported for years, not just during the campaign, so I think I wanted to hear it out.”

Trump Jr. said there was no more to the meeting than a “wasted” 20 minutes.

“There isn’t anything else,” he said, promising his team had scoured his emails and no other similar documents will emerge.

The president also tweeted a warning Tuesday morning about the media.

“Remember, when you hear the words ‘sources say’ from the Fake Media, often times those sources are made up and do not exist,” Trump wrote.
