Son, Maddison score as Tottenham return top of EPL

Tottenham Hotspur returned to the top of the Premier League as goals from Son Heung-min and James Maddison comfortably saw off Fulham.

Spurs had only dropped points this season in London derbies – against Arsenal and Brentford – but they were always in control against a limited Fulham side.

Captain Son curled in an excellent goal in the 36th minute after Calvin Bassey’s poor pass was cut out by Micky van de Ven.

Maddison doubled the lead in the second half with an almost identical goal, as another Bassey pass was cut out and the England playmaker was teed up by Son to slot home confidently.

Fulham went closest when Joao Palhinha forced Guglielmo Vicario into an impressive stop with a header from a corner.

Tottenham have made an impressive start to life under Ange Postecoglou and they began the game with the air of a team full of confidence.

Richarlison curled a shot wide when he should have done better after he was set up by Dejan Kulusevski, but Son soon curled in the opener for his seventh goal of the season.

Tottenham could have made it 2-0 before half-time but Kulusevski’s effort was blocked from close range after some excellent play involving Maddison, Son and Destiny Udogie.

Fulham caused Tottenham problems on the counter attack at times but could not make Spurs pay before Maddison’s goal secured the win to move Spurs two points clear of Manchester City at the top of the league.

SON destroys substandard goods worth N7m in Bauchi

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) on Monday said it had destroyed expired and substandard goods worth N7 million in Bauchi State.

The SON Zonal Director, Northeast Zone, Mr Adamu Abba, said during the exercise in Bauchi that destroying the expired and substandard goods was to ensure that only quality goods were sold to citizens.

He said the exercise was in collaboration with the Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency to ensure that all the food and non-food items seized were destroyed in a most environmentally friendly way.

“This is to protect the lives and property of citizens as well as to save the environment.

“The products destroyed include: beverages, cosmetics, mayonnaise, peak milk, agrochemicals, among others,” he said.

The Zonal Director reiterated that the fight against substandard products was a collective responsibility of all.

He appealed to members of the public to report any suspicious substandard product in the market to the office of SON.

Abba commended traders and artisans’ associations for their cooperation as they voluntarily reported most of the expired products to the organisation for proper action.

Also speaking, the State Coordinator of the organisation, Mr Murtala Sa’ad, noted that the feat was achieved as a result of commitment and expertise exhibited by his personnel through their weekly market survey.

“This resulted in the seizure of the expired, substandard and unbranded products from various shops in Bauchi,” he said.

He warned traders to desist from sharp practices, saying the organisation would not relent in hunting defaulters and ensuring that they faced full wrath of the law.

Sa’ad advised members of the public to always check for expiry dates of products before using them with a view to safeguarding their health.

  • Son of drug lord ‘El Chapo’ extradited to U.S.

Son of drug lord ‘El Chapo’ extradited to U.S.

A son of Mexican drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, who was arrested after a bloody firefight with Mexican authorities earlier this year, has been extradited to Chicago.

He is expected to face sweeping narcotics trafficking charges.

Ovidio Guzman Lopez, 32, is reputed to have taken over the powerful Sinaloa cartel after his father’s arrest seven years ago.

He is one of four El Chapo sons, nicknamed the “Chapitos,” charged in an indictment unsealed in Chicago earlier this year.

Of the sons, Guzman Lopez, who is known as “El Raton,” or “The Mouse,” was the only one in custody.

He was captured in Culiacán, Mexico in January after an intense battle that left 10 soldiers and 19 suspects dead, according to news reports.

Guzman Lopez, who was being held in Mexico pending extradition proceedings, was flown to Chicago on Friday afternoon, according to a law enforcement source.

He could make an initial appearance at the Dirksen US Courthouse as soon as Monday.

A lawyer for Guzman Lopez was not listed on the court docket as of Friday.

Guzman Lopez was among 28 reputed members of the notorious Sinaloa cartel charged as part of a multi-jurisdictional fentanyl-trafficking investigation unveiled in April.

Attorney General Merrick Garland; U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration chief Anne Milgram; and other top federal prosecutors, including acting Chicago U.S. Attorney Morris Pasqual launched the investigation.

In outlining the charges, Garland described the violence of the Sinaloa cartel and how its members have tortured perceived enemies, including Mexican law enforcement officials.

In some cases, cartel members also have fed victims, some still alive, to tigers owned by Guzmán’s sons, Garland said.

The Chicago indictment, which was filed under seal in January, alleged Guzman Lopez assumed day-to-day control of the cartel after his father’s arrest in 2016.

The indictment accuses the sons of orchestrating the shipment of thousands of pounds of cocaine, marijuana, and other drugs into the U.S. by boat, plane, and other means.

Guzman’s other sons charged in ChicagoJesus Alfredo Guzman SalazarIvan Archivaldo Guzman Salazar, and Joaquin Guzman Lopez, remained at large as of Friday.

The indictment was filed as part of the same case originally filed in Chicago in 2009 against El Chapo himself as well as many of his top henchmen, which is widely considered the largest narcotics case ever brought in Chicago.

Those charges alleged the Sinaloa cartel used jumbo jets, submarines, and tunnels to smuggle massive amounts of drugs into the U.S., much of which was later distributed in wholesale quantities in Chicago.

The cartel members then laundered billions of dollars in proceeds back to Mexico.

Among the cartel’s top distributors were Pedro and Margarito Flores, twin brothers who rose from the obscurity of the Little Village neighborhood on the West Side to working directly for El Chapo before cutting a secret cooperation deal with the government.

The twins’ decision to cooperate with federal authorities in 2008 culminated with Pedro Flores testifying against El Chapo at his trial in New York in December 2018.

El Chapo was convicted in New York in 2019 and is serving a life sentence at a maximum security federal prison in Colorado.

The indictments announced in April, meanwhile, differed significantly from previous investigations by including allegations that the cartel is now trafficking fentanyl, a synthetic narcotic 50 times more potent than heroin.

Nearly 107,000 Americans died of drug overdoses in the U.S. in 2021.

The Drug Enforcement Administration says most of the fentanyl trafficked in the United States comes from the Sinaloa cartel.

In addition to cartel leaders, the indictments also charged Chinese and Guatemalan citizens accused of supplying precursor chemicals required to make fentanyl.

Others charged in the cases include those accused of running drug labs and providing security and weapons for the drug trafficking operation, prosecutors said.

In announcing the cases, Garland said the charges “describe in detail how the Sinaloa Cartel operates — without respect for human rights, for human life, or the rule of law.”

Two of the defendants were accused of testing the potency of the cartel’s fentanyl on victims while they were tied down, Garland said.

In another instance, cartel members “experimented on a woman they had been ordered to shoot,” injecting her instead with fentanyl until she overdosed and died, he said.

In another allegation contained in the charges, after an addict died testing a batch of the cartel’s fentanyl, one of the defendants sent the batch to the United States anyway, Garland said.

Hundeyin said that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Ikoyi, got information about the incident on Tuesday at about 12.40 p.m. from Falomo Police Barracks.

He said that the DPO was informed that on Tuesday about 9.00 p.m., fire gutted Room 24, Block 1 of ASP Godspower David, attached to Bar Beach Police Division, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The image maker said that based on the report, emergency responders were mobilised to the scene for rescue operation.

  • Son back to scoring form as Spurs beat West Ham

Son back to scoring form as Spurs beat West Ham

Son Heung-min returned to scoring form to help Tottenham claim a 2-0 victory over West Ham on Sunday, propelling them into the English Premier League’s top four.

With Antonio Conte back in Italy recovering from emergency gallbladder surgery earlier this month, stand-in head coach Cristian Stellini was again charged with leading Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Stellini made it two wins from two games in temporary charge as substitute Son sealed the points with his first league goal since Jan. 4.

This was after Emerson nosed Spurs ahead in the 56th minute.

West Ham’s defeat leaves them in the bottom three.

Spurs, who lost heavily to Leicester City last week and then went down to AC Milan in the UEFA Champions League, leapfrogged Newcastle United into fourth place.

There were warning signs for Spurs when Jarrod Bowen blasted wide in the opening minute, though a refereeing decision was the main talking point from a sluggish first half.

Eight days on from Tomas Soucek getting away with a similar incident against Chelsea, team-mate Thilo Kehrer was perhaps fortunate not to concede a penalty kick.

This was when Richarlison’s pass struck his outstretched arm.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Richarlison were denied by Lukasz Fabianski before Cristian Romero headed over, with Spurs keeping up the pressure after the restart when Harry Kane went close.

That pressure told before the hour —- Emerson coolly slotting into the bottom left corner after combining with fellow wing-back Ben Davies.

Bowen almost found an immediate response for West Ham but Fraser Forster was equal to his snapshot.

And West Ham’s hopes of a comeback were all but dashed when Son, who had lost his place in the starting team to Richarlison, finished calmly after linking up with Kane.

  • Police recover corpse of murdered couple’s son from Ogun river

Police recover corpse of murdered couple’s son from Ogun river

The corpse of Oreoluwa Fatinoye, son of the couple who were allegedly killed by assassins in Abeokuta on new year’s day, has been recovered from Ogun river.

The deceased was reportedly thrown into a river on Adigbe-Obada road in Abeokuta after being kidnapped by the assailants who had murdered his parents.

The decomposing body of Oreoluwa was discovered floating on the river by fishermen on Tuesday morning.

Oreoluwa’s parents, Mr. Kehinde and Mrs. Bukola Fatinoye were killed by yet-to-be-identified persons in the early hours of Sunday, Jan. 1.

The couple reportedly died during the incident that occurred at their residence, located within Ibara Government Reservation Area (GRA), Abeokuta.

It was gathered that the incident happened shortly after the couple had returned from a Cross Over Service to usher in the new year.

It was also gathered that the couple were employees of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) respectively.

The building belonging to the couple was said to have been set on fire, while one of the children of the victims and their maid were reportedly kidnapped by the assailants.

The remains of the couple, who were burnt beyond recognition, were, on Monday, buried amidst tears by symphatisers, family members, and friends.

When NAN sighted Oreoluwa’s corpse, it was observed that both hands were tied with rope to the back.

The fisherman, Idowu Taiwo, said that he discovered the body floating on the river while he was preparing for the day’s work.

“On Monday, we heard that someone was thrown into this river but this morning, while we were preparing for work, the police approached us and pleaded with us to inform them any time we discover the body.

“But, this morning, around 7.30, we discovered the body while we were checking our equipment in the river.

“I called someone to help us get the number of the PPRO (Police Public Relations Officer) to tell him that we have discovered the body.

“Not long after, the police came and we showed them the body after we had brought it to the river bank,” Idowu said.

The police later took the corpse away in the presence of some family members of the Fatinoyes.

Meanwhile, the PPRO, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed that the corpse of the boy had been recovered.

Oyeyemi explained that the police would continue with their investigation to unravel the mystery behind the death of the Fatinoyes.
