PAROLE: S.Africa’s Pistorius closes up on gaining freedom in girlfriend’s murder

South African Paralympic champion, Oscar Pistorius, might be released from prison this week, following a parole, a decade after he killed his girlfriend in a crime that gripped the world.

A parole board is to decide whether Pistorius should be let out early, after a hearing in Pretoria on Friday.

“The board must determine whether the purpose of imprisonment has been served,” said Department of Correctional Services’ spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo.

Pistorius, who is now 36, shot dead Reeva Steenkamp, a model, in the early hours of Valentine’s Day in 2013, when he fired four times through the bathroom door of his ultra-secure Pretoria house.

He pleaded not guilty and denied that he killed Steenkamp in a rage, saying he mistook her for a burglar.

Known worldwide as the “Blade Runner” because of his carbon-fiber prosthetics, he was sentenced to 13 years behind bars.

Offenders in South Africa are automatically eligible for parole consideration after serving half of their sentence.

Pistorius has served more than half, having started his prison term in 2014.

PAROLE: S.Africa's Pistorius closes up on gaining freedom in girlfriend's murder

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that as part of his rehabilitation, Pistorius met Steenkamp’s parents June and Barry last year.

According to authorities, the aim is to ensure inmates “acknowledge the harm they have caused to their victims and the society at large”.

Reeva’s mother June will attend the hearing to “make representations to the parole board” which will include both parents’ victim impact statements, said Tania Koen, a lawyer representing the Steenkamps.

June’s husband Barry is unable to travel due to ill health, Koen added.

Koen said she was not at liberty to discuss the Steenkamps’ position on a possible release of their daughter’s killer.

“They are going to make their submissions. And then obviously, the law will take its course,” she said.

The board, normally made up of correctional services and community members, will consider whether an inmate has been rehabilitated or still poses a danger to society, said Kelly Phelps, a law professor at the University of Cape Town.

This will take into account the seriousness of the offence as well as Pistorius’ behaviour behind bars, including whether he attended educational and life skills programs.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that release on parole usually comes with some conditions, such as monitoring from authorities and duty to report to a community correction centre.

“It’s very common to have things like alcohol restrictions, restrictions on your ability to own firearms… and to require participation in counseling,” said Phelps.

Day parole, where the inmate returns to prison at night, and community service are also on the cards, said Nxumalo of the correctional services.

A year before killing Steenkamp, Pistorius became the first double amputee to race at the Olympics at the London 2012 games.

He then was a sporting icon admired worldwide and courted by sponsors.

But his achievements came crashing down after the killing, with his character and past closely scrutinised in a trial that made headlines around the world.

He was initially sentenced to six years in jail but the term was later lengthened to 13 after the state appealed that it was unduly lenient.

Parole decisions are usually known the same day of the hearing or a day later, but Nxumalo hinted that in Pistorius’s case “the decision may not be taken on the same”.

If denied, the offender has the right to approach the courts for review.

    S. Africa: Hundreds hold ralllies to demand Ramaphosa’s resignation (PHOTOS)

In a bid to force out South Africa’s President, Cyril Ramaphosa, over his handling of the country’s economy and energy crisis, hundreds have marched to the presidential residence to demand his resignation

South Africa‘s opposition, on Monday, held rallies under tight security.

But turnout was low and calls for strikes went unheeded as the government mobilised thousands of police, backed by troops, to stifle any unrest.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), the country’s third-largest party, had called for a “national shutdown,” sparking fears of a repeat of bloody clashes and looting just under two years ago.

Under close escort and with a police helicopter overhead, several thousand protesters marched in the capital Pretoria to Ramaphosa’s official residence, passing the seat of government, the Union Buildings.

“Our demands are simple, we want Ramaphosa to leave this house, to leave this house with immediate effect,” EFF’s firebrand leader Julius Malema told protesters.

“We are here to demand the end of load shedding (electricity outages), to demand Ramaphosa to step down and if he doesn’t… we will force him to step down,” he said.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that in other parts of the country, protesters gathered in groups varying in size from dozens to hundreds.

The protest call rekindled memories of clashes in July 2021 that saw the worst violence since the end of apartheid and advent of democracy in 1994.

At least 350 people were killed when protests sparked by the jailing of ex-president Jacob Zuma spiralled into riots and looting.

As the protests loomed, the authorities mobilised nearly 3,500 troops to assist police and warned they would deal firmly with any unrest.

“The mayhem and anarchy that was threatened did not materialise due to the strong presence and visibility of law enforcement authorities,” Ramaphosa’s spokesman, Vincent Magwenya, stated in a text message.

“Citizens who were not party to any demonstration were able to carry on with their normal daily activities. “There was no shutdown. Some businesses closed down due to intimidation and fear of violence.” he said.

The EFF told followers their actions “must be militant and radical” but to behave peacefully and watch out for provocateurs.

Eighty-seven protesters were arrested for violence-related offences overnight, according to the police, who gave no details of the offences.

S/Africa shutdown: No Nigerian-owned business is affected – Official

The General of Nigeria Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA), on Tuesday, confirmed that no Nigerian-owned business was affected by the ongoing shutdown in the country.

Okoli made the confirmation in a telephone interview with NAN against the backdrop of the “South Africa Shutdown” situation in the country.

According to him, the opposition political party, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), carried out its plan to shut down South Africa’s business activities on Monday, March 20, 2023.

“About a month ago, the party announced plans to shut down businesses and activities in the country, arising from their assertion that President Cyril Ramaphosa must step down as President of South Africa.

“Their call for the president to step down was because of the ‘Phala Phala farm Robbery’, known as the Farm gate scandal.

“Phala Phala is a farm owned by President Ramaphosa in Bela Bela, in Limpopo Province, that was robbed of some US$ 580,000 on May 9, 2020.

“The money was stolen from a sofa in the farm by two unidentified men. It was alleged that the president concealed the robbery and did not report the matter to the police.

“The money was also allegedly not disclosed to the South Africa Revenue service; the question by EFF is why the president lied to the nation by not reporting to the police authority.”

He explained that in 2022, a parliamentary panel report had found the president guilty of serious misconduct, but the president sought a judicial review.

Okoli, however, noted that the Public Protector did not find the president guilty of any misconduct.

“The EFF continued on their demand for the president to step down, citing incompetence, crippling electricity load shedding and the alleged phala phala serious misconduct.”

Okoli disclosed that 57 persons had been arrested in connection with the shutdown in the country.

“The EFF shutdown was hugely successful, keeping business premises closed and with commuters afraid; few days ago, NICASA issued movement advisory to the Nigerian community in South Africa.

“To guide them on their business and general conduct during the day of the shut down; the High Commission and the Consulate issued similar advisories to Nigerians.”

“There has not been any report of a Nigerian victim or Nigerian-owned business affected during the shutdown. We hope it remains safe to Nigerians,” he said.

Nigerian man, Ekene Dumkele bags life sentence for South African artiste’s murder

A 37-year-old Nigerian national, Onyeghani Ekene Dumkele, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Limpopo artist, Shaun-Doughlas Chabalala in South Africa.

The Sunnyside police spokesperson, Captain Daniel Mavimbela, said 23-year-old Chabalala was robbed inside the seventh-floor residential unit, forcefully thrown out of the window and died at the scene.

Mavimbela said, “Shortly after he was convicted, a 37-year-old foreign national, who murdered a multitalented up-and-coming Limpopo artist, Shaun-Douglas Chabalala, 23, was handed a life sentence in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday afternoon.”

“Additionally, a 15-year jail term was imposed on Onyeghani Ekene Dumkele for aggravated robbery, plus a 12-month suspended sentence, on condition that he is deported to his native country after he completes his concurrent sentence for murder and aggravated robbery.”

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) gathered that Chabalala and his friend, Given Mzamane, were lured to the infamous Tambotie block of flats in Sunnyside, east of Pretoria, in May 2018, through a fake advertisement of a luxury camera. The two arrived at the populated block of flats, with the intention of purchasing the advertised camera.

Mavimbela said, “They carried a cash amount of R14 000 on them, only to be led into an ambush inside an apartment where Dumkele lived on the seventh floor. Upon entering the apartment, the victims were attacked by a group of men.”

Mzamane testified that he forced his way out of the door and manage to escape. However, it was not before he had witnessed two men, who had participated in the robbery and attack on himself and Chabalala, lift Chabalala and threw him out of the window from the same apartment.”

The artist succumbed to injuries from the attack and the fall. He was declared dead at the scene.

“Dumkele was arrested almost 15 months after the murder, by Sunnyside police detective, Captain Simon Motolla, who had decided to abandon a wedding celebration that he had attended in Mpumalanga after he was tipped-off on the whereabouts of the accused,” said Mavimbela.

Dumkele was sniffed out from the ceiling inside a house in Pretoria West by a police dog, following the enlistment of the services of a K-9 Unit.”

During his arrest, Dumkele blamed the murder on his missing co-accused and fellow countryman, Obienna Ofoegbuliwe, who has since absconded after he was granted bail of R3 000.

“That testimony was rejected by the court since he knew that, among others, the police had been searching for him, had not disclosed the identity of the killer prior to his arrest and was easily pointed out by Mzamane during the identification parade,” said Mavimbela.

Sunnyside police station commander, Brigadier Matshidiso Kgoadi has welcomed the stiff sentence.

Kgoadi saluted the dedicated team of investigators and the prosecutor who worked tirelessly to secure Dumkele’s conviction.
