    Buhari appoints 3 career ambassadors

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed three career ambassadors from Delta, Benue and Yobe states.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports Senate President Bukola Saraki made this known during plenary on Tuesday.

The Senate President read a letter from Buhari on the appointment of the three career ambassadors.

Buhari had appointed UK Deputy High Commissioner, Ambassador Kabiru Bala as new Nigerian envoy to South Africa with concurrent accreditation to Swaziland and Lesotho.

Ambassador Bala, who assumed office in the UK two years ago, received his letter of credence confirming his new appointment on Monday in Abuja.

Sarah Sanda, the official spokeswoman for foreign affairs minister Geoffrey Onyeama, said that the new appointment will take immediate effect.

A career diplomat, Ambassador Bala joined the Nigerian Foreign Service in 1999 and had at different times served in Brazil, Sudan, Gambia, the Netherlands and Thailand.

He also served in the State House office of the chief of staff to the president, as well as state house protocol.

Expected to fly out to South Africa immediately, Ambassador Bala will replace Ahmed Ibeto who resigned his appointment in July to join the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Prior to his appointment, Alhaji Ibeto had been the Deputy Governor of Niger State.

Nigeria v South Africa: NFF dismisses alleged visa denial reports

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) on Friday dismissed reports of an alleged denial of visas to some Super Eagles players by the South African Embassy in Turkey.

Dr Mohammed Sanusi, the NFF General Secretary dismissed the report during an interview with the News Agency (NAN) on Friday while leading a delegation to inspect facilities at the Pa Ngele Oruta Stadium, Abakaliki.

NAN reports that a section of the media on Thursday alleged that the South African Embassy in Turkey denied three Turkish-based Super Eagles players, visa into South Africa for Saturday’s AFCON 2019 qualifier.

According to the reports, the development made the players to process their travel documents in Nigeria which affected their early report to the team’s camp and the needed concentration in training.

Sanusi noted that the NFF never received such report as it would have been notified if such an incident occurred.

“I know that there are mechanisms to ensure that such issues are checked and they are not to be left in the hands of the South African authorities alone.

“I would have informed the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to act accordingly, so as far as the NFF is concerned, there is nothing like that,” he said.

The NFF scribe, however, tipped the Super Eagles for victory in the encounter, adding that the NFF had prepared the team adequately for the task.

“The team has the quality to deliver on match day because it is not afraid of any team but gives all teams their due respect.

“Nigerians should pray extensively for the team because it is not in all instances that techniques and tactics work in football.

“A shot can be taken during a match and it would hit the bar but prayers can make it enter into the goal post,” he said.

He dismissed the fears that the absence of some prominent members of the team would affect its chances against the South Africans, noting that such fears were unfounded.

“When a good player is discovered in Nigeria, millions of others have yet to be discovered as the players on parade have the opportunities of proving their mettle.

“The problem is when a coach pins his playing pattern on a particular player and the player gets injured, but when such injuries occur ahead of time, there is no cause for alarm,” he said.

  • AFCON qualifiers: We are not under pressure – Ahmed Musa

AFCON qualifiers: We are not under pressure – Ahmed Musa

Super Eagles Captain, Ahmed Musa, said the team was not under pressure ahead of Saturday’s AFCON 2019 qualifying match against Bafana Bafana of South Africa in Johannesburg.

Musa stated this in an interview with newsmen shortly after the team rounded off its four-day training camp at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba.

He said all the players had resolved to put their “all” into the game, match like every other game, adding that the team would face the South Africans with a winning mentality.

“With regards to our game against South Africa, I can tell you that we are well-prepared. It is not going to be a different game. We are taking it like every other game that we have played.

“We are not under any pressure, because we are confident of securing qualification for the 2019 African Cup of Nations.

“As a team, we are united and play for each other. That is the most important thing in football.

“The South Africans don’t scare us; we know them very well, just as they know us too,” Musa said.

One of the three goalkeepers in camp, Daniel Akpeyi, corroborated Musa’s position on the team’s preparation for the Bafana Bafana encounter, saying “as you can see we have just rounded up of training here in Asaba.

“I can tell you that we are prepared. We do not have any problem facing the South Africans.

“As a team, our spirit is high and we are united in the task of securing qualification for AFCON 2019 and as such, the Bafana Bafana cannot stop us. We are prepared to surprise them in Johannesburg.”

The team’s coach, Gernot Rohr, told journalists that the camping in Asaba was a huge success as it had helped the team handlers to access the fitness of the players.

He said that there was no injury in the team at the moment, adding that all the players in camp were fit and ready to do battle with the Bafana Bafana.

“We have done our homework; we will go into the game with high spirit and victory on our mind. I can tell you that we have no injury problem at the moment; all the players are fit and are in high spirit.

“The camping here in Asaba has helped us a lot to look at the boys in camp, access their fitness and see how each of them is doing,” Rohr said.

However, the last training of the team in Asaba recorded a protest by over 300 football fans, who confronted security agents after they were shut out of the stadium.

The Super Eagles had a two-hour light training in closed doors contrary to the team’s management earlier plan to make the final day of training open to fans.

The angry fans shouted for over an hour in protest against what they described as “unfair treatment by management of the team”.

One of them, Uche Ezendu, a trader, claimed that he closed his shop to come and watch the Super Eagles, but was disappointed after he and many other fans were denied entry into the stadium.

“We came here as patriotic Nigerians to watch the boys and wish them success before they depart for South Africa, but they locked us out. This is very unfair. Why the closed-door training?” he queried.

Another fan, Adebimpe Afolabi, a tailor, said he came all the way from the neighbouring Ogwashi-Uku to watch and cheer the Nigerian team in training, but was shocked that fans were not allowed in.

“We heard that today (Wednesday) would be open day training where the fans would be allowed to watch the players. But surprisingly, they changed the plan without any information. Many of us left our businesses to come here.

“This is the height of deceit by the NFF and as Nigerians who love football, we condemn this ill-treatment of fans. This is why many Nigerian football fans would rather support European football,” Afolabi said.

Super Eagles Media Officer, Toyin Ibitoye, who had a hectic time trying to appease the fans, told NAN on phone that the decision to make the final day training a closed-door affair was borne out of a late change of programme.

“I can feel for the fans, but there is nothing we can do because we had a change of programme. Tuesday’s training was supposed to be closed, but we made it open.

“So today, Wednesday, being the final day of the training, we decided to make it a closed-door affair to balance the change that had affected our earlier plan,” Ibitoye said.

  • 22 Super Eagles players in Asaba camp ahead of Bafana Bafana clash

Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa and 21 other players trained at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba on Tuesday evening ahead of Saturday’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in Johannesburg.

According to a statement by Ademola Olajire, the Director of Communications, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), there were goalkeepers Daniel Akpeyi, Theophilus Afelokhai and Ikechukwu Ezenwa at the training.

“At the training, we also had defenders Olaoluwa Aina, Adeleye Aniyikaye, Semi Ajayi, Bryan Idowu, William Ekong, Leon Balogun, Kenneth Omeruo and Jamilu Collins.

“There were also midfielders Oghenekaro Etebo, John Ogu and Mikel Agu, and forwards Kelechi Iheanacho, Moses Simon, Victor Osimhen, Henry Onyekuru, Alex Iwobi, Isaac Success and Samuel Chukwueze.

“Only France-based forward Samuel Kalu is expected on Wednesday,’’ he said.

Super Eagles of Nigeria need just one point from Saturday’s encounter inside the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg to be sure of a ticket.

On Match Day 1 of the qualifying series, South Africa won 2-0 with goals from Tokelo Rantie and Percy Tau right inside the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

However the defeat, the first-ever loss to South Africa in a competitive match, stirred the formidable spirit in the Eagles.

They went on to sweep all before them to earn a 2018 FIFA World Cup ticket with a match to spare.

Also, since the 2019 AFCON qualifiers resumed in September, Nigeria has won all three matches to stand at the door of qualification with a match to spare.

Nigeria’s delegation to Saturday’s big match will depart the country aboard a chartered flight from the Benin City Airport on Thursday evening.

  • Super Eagles goalkeeper Uzoho doubtful for AFCON qualifiers clash

Super Eagles goalkeeper Uzoho doubtful for AFCON qualifiers clash

Super Eagles goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho, is doubtful for next week’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa, after picking up an injury during Elche’s Spanish Segunda clash with Cadiz on Sunday.

Uzoho played the entire 90 minutes of the match, which they lost 5-1.

He was taken to the San Rafael Clinic for treatment of an injury and was discharged later.

Complimentary tests will be carried out on Uzoho, to further ascertain the level of the injury.

The test will go a long way in determining his availability for the fixture in Johannesburg.

Uzoho who is on loan at Elche from Deportivo La Coruna, conceded five times in the game, after keeping clean sheets in his previous two games.

  • Afcon 2019: Rohr targets qualification in South Africa

Afcon 2019: Rohr targets qualification in South Africa

Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr is confident the Super Eagles will beat South Africa to qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

The three-time African champions, who lead Group E on nine points, will take on Bafana Bafana on 17 November in Johannesburg.

The Super Eagles will earn a berth at next year’s tournament if they draw with South Africa, who are one point adrift of Nigeria; while Libya and Seychelles are tied to third and fourth spots respectively.

“We want to qualify from this group if possible in the next game away to South Africa in Johannesburg which means we will do the same thing that we did for the qualification for the 2018 World Cup held in Russia that is to be qualified for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations before our last match is played against Seychelles in Nigeria,” brila.net quoted Rohr as saying.

“If we have a point in South Africa we have qualified even if Libya win in Seychelles and also win at home against South Africa, Libya will get 10 points.

”With our 10 points, we will still qualify for 2019 Afcon. But our ambition and resolve is to win in South Africa but a draw would be enough.”

  • Again, Mikel missing as Rohr invites 23 Eagles for S/Africa showdown

John Obi Mikel has, again, been left out of the Super Eagles team as Gernot Rohr called up 23 players for a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa on 17 November.
The same group of players would feature in a friendly with Uganda’s Cranes at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, three days later.
Nigeria lead Group E on nine points, and will book a place in next year’s tournament in Cameroon if they defeat the second-placed Bafana Bafana in Johannesburg.
And despite scoring for Tianjin Teda in their 4-2 defeat to Shanghai Shenhua in the Chinese Super league on Sunday, Rohr did not consider the former Chelsea midfielder for the aforementioned games.
Mikel has not featured for the Eagles since he led them to the World Cup in Russia, where the three-time African champions failed to progress beyond the group phase.
Rohr, based on the list released on Monday, retained most of the players that prosecuted the back-to-back wins against Libya this month, and recalled former U17 World Cup–winning striker Victor Osimhen.
The German also handed another U17 World Cup winning forward Samuel Chukwueze his first call.
All the invited players are expected to report in Asaba on Monday, 12 November.

Super Eagles’ head coach Gernot Rohr has called up stand-in team captain Ahmed Musa and 22 other players for preparations ahead of the senior national male football team’s two upcoming matches.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the team have ahead of them next month’s crucial 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in Johannesburg.

Nigeria lead Group E of the qualification series with nine points.

Victory in the match will automatically send the Eagles to the 2019 AFCON finals in Cameroon.
The second ticket in Group E to be down to a battle between the Bafana and the Knights.

  • Tanzanian wife of Nigerian fatally shot in South Africa

Tanzanian wife of Nigerian fatally shot in South Africa

The Nigerian Community in South Africa has expressed dismay by the fatal shooting of the wife of a member, Mrs Leyness Mangu Irumudomo.
The late Mrs Irumudomo, a.k.a. Mama Lee, 43, was a Tanzanian married to Mr Jackson Igbinosa Irumudomo, a native of Ekpoma in Edo. They had three children.
Her husband told the News Agency of Nigeria on the telephone from Pretoria, South Africa, that Mama Lee was shot on Oct. 26, in Soweto.
He said that prior to her death, a Tanzanian who worked in the same mall with his wife had sent threat text messages to her.
“My wife and her fellow Tanzanian worked together in the same mall and because of misunderstanding in their work place, the same lady sent her threat messages.
“A docket was opened at Pretoria Central Police Station on the threat to her life by her colleague, who is also a Tanzanian,’’ he said.
Irumudomo said that the death was painful and that he and their children would miss his wife sorely.
Mr Adetola Olubajo, President of the Nigerian Union in South Africa, said that the body was saddened by the death of Mama Lee.
“She was an amiable business woman and a blessing to friends and family. She will be greatly missed because of the vacuum her absence has created,’’ he said.
Olubajo, however, said that the union was worried that killing was now fashionable within the Nigerian community.
“The quietness of our government officials is of great concern to us. A Nigerian was shot dead in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, last week, nothing has been done to bring the perpetrators to book.
“People are now bold to kill one another just by the slightest disagreement because the killers of Nigerians and their family members are not brought to book,’’ he said.
Olubajo also said that “we need investigation and prosecution of the murder cases involving Nigerians directly or indirectly.’’
