Four lions escape from South Africa’s Kruger park

Four lions have escaped from South Africa’s Kruger National Park on Sunday night.

The parks authorities said in a statement that rangers are searching for the lions who were last spotted at Matsulu village in the Mpumalanga province, Reuters reported.

This is the second time lions have escaped from the main tourist attraction site.

Five lions escaped in May and then captured days after near the border with Swaziland.

The lions broke free from the park which is close to Komatipoort, a community of about 5,000 people.

In 2015, a lion named Sylvester crawled under an electric fence at another park and went on a three-week sheep-killing spree before he was found by rangers taking a nap.

The cat was earlier this year released back into wild from a 200-hectare holding enclosure.

The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency has been called on residents around the park to be vigilant.

  • Biafra: Igbos in South Africa back Ohaneze, say no election boycott in Anambra

Founder of Ohaneze Ndigbo, a socio-cultural group in South Africa, Chief Jonas Udeji, has affirmed that the stance of its national body not to boycott the Anambra governorship election is in order.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Kanu had recently warned that the governorship election in Anambra scheduled for November this year may not hold if the Federal Government fails to recognise the Republic of Biafra.

However, in a counter motive, the Apex Igbo cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndi-Igbo on Wednesday said Kanu should not generalise the demand for a Biafra nation as some Igbos still believe in a restructured Nigeria.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the group also cautioned Kanu not to arrogate himself as the supreme leader of Igbo land.

Udeji told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Saturday that Kanu was not qualified to give such a directive on behalf of Igbos.

“ Ohaneze Ndigbo remains the apex body of Igbos in Nigeria and world-wide.

“ No single individual will give any order on behalf of Igbos if that person is not the elected President of Ohaneze.

“ We understand Nnamdi Kanu`s emotions about the plight of Igbos in Nigeria. But, he should realise that we have a leader and that is Nwodo.

“ He is the one to speak on behalf of Igbos,” he said.

Udeji urged Anambra people and other South East states to ignore such directive from IPOB and elect their leaders when the opportunity comes.

According to him, Igbos should collectively decide on such sensitive issues under the leadership of Ohaneze, their apex body, and not based on an individual’s directive.

He said that Anambra people had the right to elect their governor and other representatives at the local government, state and national levels.

Udeji said that Ohaneze under Nwodo`s leadership had been focused and remained determined to achieve set goals and objectives.

  • South African Church bars blacks from attending service

…Says church is only for whites

A South African Church has barred blacks from attending service.

The church on Sunday disallowed two black journalists from entering.

The Afrikaanse Protestante Kerk church in Orania, told the journalists “the church is only for whites”.

Orania is an Afrikaans-only South African town located along the banks of the Orange River, in the arid Karoo region of the Northern Cape Province.

The journalists were on an assignment and decided to attend a Sunday service before returning to Pretoria but they were intercepted by a church leader, identified as Mr. Theunis Oukamp, at the door.

According to Africa Review, Oukamp said allowing black people into an all-white church would be violating the “rights of Afrikaans people”.

I am now in a difficult situation. You know that Orania, is only for white people, this is why we are here.

You must understand I know you want to serve God and everything but I have to protect the rights of Afrikaans people. So I cannot let you in, you guys can go to any other church, but this one is only for white people,” Mr. Oukamp told the journalists.

Mr. Langton Ndlovu, a Christian, described the move as ‘diabolical’.

This is demonic, in this day and age, I never thought this was real. That’s unacceptable. I wonder how they read the scripture that says “there is neither Greek nor Jew” but we’re one in Christ,” said Mr. Ndlovu.

The president of the South Africa Union Council of Independent Churches, Archbishop Modiri Patrick Shole, expressed shock that there was still segregation in the body of Christ, 23 years after apartheid ended.

We don’t discriminate in church because before God we are one – whether white or black. I find it weird that we still have discrimination in the church,” he said.

  • South Africa top court okays secret ballots in Zuma vote, opposition celebrates

The Constitutional Court in South Africa has ruled that the Speaker of Parliament could decide if a no confidence vote against embattled leader, Jacob Zuma, could be held through secret ballots.

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng ruled that Speaker Baleka Mbete had the ‘necessary latitude to call for such a vote.’

Mbete – a leading member of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) – had repeatedly refused requests by opposition parties for previous no-confidence votes to be held via secret ballots. Her position prompted the case being taken to the top court.

The opposition parties especially the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have held that ANC members would vote against the president once the vote was anonymously carried out.

The ruling African National Congress (ANC) party, which has a majority in parliament, has said it will vote against the motion as it always has, but factions within the party are battling for control before a party conference in December where they must choose a successor to 75-year old leader.

Zuma, who will be in parliament later in the day for a question and answer session, has survived four previous no-confidence votes. The ball is now in the court of the Speaker to decide which way to go when the next vote is called.

Opposition parties have hailed the court ruling as the first step in removing Zuma who has been dogged by repeated corruption scandals and a damning report by the country’s anti-corruption ombudsman.

A leader of one opposition party, UDM, described the ruling as a “victory for democracy.”

  • S/Africans boycott high data costs protest as #SocialMediaBlackout trend

South Africans have boycotted a call to skip social media use for a day to protest against high data costs, which has ironically seen #SocialMediaBlackout trend on twitter.

Musician and activist Ntsiki Mazwai had urged South Africans to log off and not buy data to pressure mobile providers, according to a BBC report.

“Data costs are obscene and are not affordable for people on the ground. We want to bring attention to this issue; we want to engage government and cellular network companies,” BBC quotes Mazwai to have said.

Discontent over internet service charges in the country last year led to the #DataMustFall campaign.

But it appears that many users could not help but check their social media accounts despite the boycott plea by activist Mazwai.

However, Internet analyst Arthur Goldstuck told Fin24 that although the campaign had fallen short, “in one respect the trend has highlighted the consumers’ frustration in dealing with the high cost of data”.

Amid public anger over the issue, South African President Jacob Zuma at this year’s State of the Union address said “lowering of the cost of data is uppermost in our policies and plans”.

Globally, the report states, South Africa is mid-ranking when it comes to data prices: expensive compared with many European countries but cheap compared with the rest of Africa, compared to especially Nigeria.

In its annual report, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) ranks South Africa as 85th out of 178 countries for mobile broadband prices, based on 500 MB of pre-paid mobile data.

The ITU puts the monthly cost of mobile broadband prices at $7.76 in South Africa. Nigeria occupies 130th position with the monthly cost of mobile broadband prices at $10.91.

  • 2019 AFCON Qualifier: Why South Africa defeated Nigeria – Rohr

…says team will perform better against Cameroon

Technical adviser of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr has admitted his side lacked the killer instinct and experience, after they were defeated 2-0 by South Africa in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Saturday.

Two second half goals courtesy of Tokelo Rantie and Percy Tau, saw Stuart Baxter’s side claim a famous away victory.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Saturday’s game was Bafana Bafana’s first ever win over Nigeria in a competitive match.

Nobody is happy with the result but in some negative result there are some positives,” Rohr said during his post-match interview.

And we have to search for them. The first goal we conceded was a counterattack from the right flank and the second goal was a gift.

My young team played a very good first half. They played well but they didn’t score and in the second half we knew that the experienced team of South Africa could be dangerous and counter us and that was what happened.

We had difficulties to finish the game they made so many efforts. Some of our players were tired to we tried to put in some attacking players to bring in some power in the attack but it was not enough.

We knew they were unbeaten in the last 17 games now 18. I believe that this game we made progress with my young team of an average age of 24 years. The youngest team in Africa. This game they will learn and not repeat the same mistakes.

We controlled the game until the goal they conceded.

You know with a young team where all is good it’s wonderful, when it’s difficult they become nervous and that was the case today.

But I trust in these players because theg played well in the first half.

I don’t want give excuses for the missing players. It’s right we missed some big players to score the goals.

The game against Cameroon will be much better.”

Libya tops Group E with three points, following their 5-1 win over Seychelles. Baxter’s men are in second place on goals difference, while Nigeria is third with no points.
