Ex-President Zuma barred from South African election

South Africa’s highest Court on Monday ruled that former President Jacob Zuma cannot stand as a candidate in next week’s general election.

The Constitutional Court ruled that Zuma’s sentence of more than 12 months in prison has disqualified him and made him ineligible to stand.

His former party, the ruling African National Congress (ANC), suspended Zuma, 82, in January.

He has since founded a new party, ‘Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK)’ and intended to stand as chairman of the party in the May 29 elections.

The constitutional court ruling reverses an earlier ruling by a lower court allowing Zuma to stand in the elections.

The elections are seen as the most significant since freedom fighter and later president Nelson Mandela led the country to democracy in 1994.

Polls indicate that the ANC could for the first time lose its absolute majority and be forced to seek a coalition partner.

Under the constitution, the president is appointed by parliament and not directly elected.

President from 2009 to 2018, Zuma was forced from office on grounds of corruption.

In 2021, he was handed a 15-month prison term after refusing to give evidence to a committee investigating nepotism and corruption during his period in office.

His arrest provoked riots in which some 350 people were killed and hundreds of businesses were looted and firebombed.

Zuma served less than eight weeks in prison before being released on grounds of poor health.

NICASA, NiDCOM condemn alleged killing of Nigerian in S/Africa

The Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa (NICASA) and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) have condemned the alleged murder of a compatriot, Mr Ebuka Nwoko, by South African police officials.

The President-General of NICASA, Dr Frank Onyekwelu condemned the alleged murder of the Nigerian in an interview with NAN on Sunday.

According to Onyekwelu, Ebuka, 43, well known as Jeff, was allegedly murdered while in the custody of South African security officials in Danielskuil, northern Cape, South Africa.

“NICASA condemns in the strongest terms, the killing of Jeff., whose tragic death in the hands of the South African Police officials is deeply distressing and unacceptable.

“This death could have been avoided.

“We express profound disappointment in this avoidable action by men of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and demand thorough investigation into this gruesome murder.

“South Africa is a democratic state. it is imperative that regardless of nationality, color or creed, people here should be treated with dignity and afforded full protection of the law, especially by law enforcement officers,”  Onyekwelu said.

Citing Section 11 of the South African Constitution, The NICASA president foreigners living in the country has the right to life.

He reaffirmed the association’s readiness to work closely with South African authorities to promote peace and law and order within the Nigerian community in South Africa.

“We acknowledge that the police in South Africa have a duty to enforce the law, but we vehemently oppose any action that will result in the loss of innocent lives.

“We urge all Nigerians living in South Africa to remain peaceful and law-abiding, even in the face of this tragic act, while we await the outcome of a full investigation into the incident.

Onyekwelu called for a quick investigation and the early arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators of what he described as a heinous act.

“Justice must be served and those accountable must be held to account for their actions,” he said.

He prayed God to grant Jeff’s family the fortitude to bear the loss and the strength to pass through the difficult time of his passing.

“No family should be compelled to endure such a senseless loss.

“The national leadership of NICASA stands in solidarity with the Nigerian community and will continue to advocate improved welfare and protection of Nigerian lives in South Africa,” he added.

Reacting, Mr Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Head of Media, Public Relations, and Protocol, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), confirmed the incident and said the commission condemned the alleged murder of Nwoko.

According to the NIDCOM spokesman, the alleged murder of the Nigerians is a sad event.

“We are getting different report saying that it was an extrajudicial killing.

“So we are now calling on the government of South Africa and other relevant authorities to constitute an investigative panel to probe the circumstances surrounding the death of Jeff.

“This is so that we can have an understanding of the cause of that and then, whoever is found guilty of it should face the law.

“We are equally calling on Nigerians living in South Africa and other related unions to remain calm, pending the response we will get from the South African government.

“We are happy they have equally set up a committee to quickly look into the matter.

“We are waiting for the outcome of that committee’s work.

“So that is what we have for now,” Balogun said.

2026 WC qualifier: Nigeria vs South Africa match official revealed

Chadian official, Alhadi Mahamat will be in the centre when the Super Eagles host South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo in June.

Mahamat, 38, has officiated in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup competitions

He was also a referee at the 34th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Cote d’Ivoire earlier in the year.

Mahamat will work with Sudanese official Mohammed Abdallah (assistant referee 1), Abelmiro Dos Reis Monte Negro from Sao Tome & Principe (assistant referee 2), and compatriot Pousri Alfred (fourth official).

The  encounter will commence at 8pm Nigeria time on June 7.

Ahmed Abou Elela from Egypt will serve as the referee assessor, while Ghanaian Munkaila Adam will be the commissioner for the clash.

CAF also appointed Ethiopian official Bamlak Weyesa, 43, as the referee for the encounter between the Super Eagles and the Cheetahs of Benin Republic at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny, Abidjan.

  • 2026 World Cup Qualifiers: South Africa tremble ahead of treble with Nigeria

2026 World Cup Qualifiers: South Africa tremble ahead of treble with Nigeria

Exactly four months after they were bumped and relegated to the third-place match of the Africa Cup of Nations by the Super Eagles, South Africa’s Bafana Bafana are in jitters as they will come up against the three-time African champions again, in a crucial 2026 World Cup qualifying match in Uyo.

Only three days ago, the Super Falcons pushed Banyana Banyana, reigning African champions, off the bus to this year’s Women’s Olympic Football Tournament, instead grabbing the ticket to make sure of a first appearance at the glamour tournament for the first time in 16 years.

The assured manner of Nigeria’s victories in the two fixtures have left the hierarchy of South African football flummoxed, and there is no adequate time to recover or rejig strategies before the Bafana Bafana come up against the Super Eagles in a Day 3 encounter of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying series at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo on Friday, 7th June.

With two points from their previous two matches, but aware of the hold they have over Bafana Bafana, the African vice champions are confident of the three points on the day, which could see them fly to the top of the pool.

It was on 7th February at the Stade de la Paix, Bouake that the Super Eagles kicked the Bafana to the third-place match of the 34th Africa Cup of Nations. Despite achieving parity late in the game, the Bafana were cut to size during the penalty shootout with Nigeria’s South Africa-based goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali saving two of the kicks by the Bafana.

South Africans’ boasts of bouncing the Super Falcons in the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament fixture in revenge, ended belly-up with the Banyana failing to score a goal in 180 minutes of action, with the two teams separated by Rasheedat Ajibade’s goal from the penalty spot in Abuja on Friday, 5th April.

Despite being a point ahead of the Super Eagles in their World Cup qualifying group, the Bafana will fall behind once they submit to the superior strength, skill and savvy of the Super Eagles on another Friday in June.

It can be recalled that when the two teams also met at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019, at the quarter-final stage, Nigeria triumphed 2-1 in Cairo.

Players of the Super Eagles are already getting in the mood to deliver the big punches to Bafana in Uyo in a few weeks’ time. Only on Thursday night, top striker Victor Boniface returned from the injury that kept him out of the AFCON, by coming off the bench to score in Bayer Leverkusen’s Europa League quarter-final duel with West Ham of England.

African Player of the Year Victor Osimhen has also been unable to stop scoring for his Italian Serie A side, SC Napoli.

Goalkeeper Nwabali remains in awesome shape, and midfielder Alex Iwobi and Ademola Lookman shone brightly in the defeat of Ghana in a friendly in Morocco last month.

  • South Africa Polls: Jacob Zuma cleared to participate in May elections

South Africa Polls: Jacob Zuma cleared to participate in May elections

Jacob Zuma an ex -president of South Africa, has been cleared to contest the upcoming election by the country’s electoral court.

Zuma was barred from participating in the forthcoming elections by South Africa’s Independent Electoral Commission, SAIEC, last month, barring Zuma from contesting elections.

However, In a judgement delivered on Tuesday, the court upturned the decision made by SAIEC.

SAIEC had barred Zuma from contesting the forthcoming elections due to his criminal record.

The probe was centred on corruption allegations in government and state-owned companies during Zuma’s presidential term from 2009 to 2018.

However, in a brief court order, the electoral court said an appeal by Zuma and his party was successful, noting that the objection against his candidature had been dismissed.

“The decision of the Electoral Commission is set aside,” the court wrote.

Following the clearance, Zuma is expected to run for the presidency on behalf of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party, which he founded last year after leaving the African National Congress, ANC.

The election, which is set to take place on May 29, is expected to be the country’s most competitive vote since democracy began in 1994.

Banking on Zuma’s popularity, analysts believe the MK party may cut well into the vote share of the already embattled ruling ANC.

  • Paris 2024: Why I didn’t feature Asisat Oshoala against South Africa – Randy Waldrum

Paris 2024: Why I didn’t feature Asisat Oshoala against South Africa – Randy Waldrum

Super Falcons coach, Randy Waldrum has opened up on reasons why female African footballer of the year and Bay FC of United States striker, Asissat Oshoala did not feature in yesterday’s Olympic qualifier against the Banyana Banyana of South Africa.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Super Falcons secured a slim victory over the South Africans courtesy of Rasheedat Ajibade’s 43rd minute penalty goal.

Ajibade’s goal managed to be the only goal of the encounter as both goalkeeper made saves to deny opponents from scoring.

Speaking during the post match conference, Waldrum said he didn’t feature Oshoala because she got to camp late and was suffering from jet lag.

He added that he will assess her fitness level to be able to decide if the Bay FC striker would feature in the reverse feature coming up next week in Pretoria, South Africa.

“Asisat just arrived camp and obviously and visibly she looks tired from the long travels she had, this explains why I didn’t feature her in the game.

“I will access her fitness level to be able to decide if she will feature in the reverse fixture taking place next week in South Africa,” Waldrum said.

The Super Falcons coach during the post-match media briefing at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, went further to say the team lost several scoring chances in spite of the lone goal victory over Banyana Banyana of South Africa on Friday in Abuja.

Waldrum also said that it was unfortunate that the Super Falcons failed to score more than a goal in the match they dominated defensively.

A well-taken 42nd minute penalty by Captain Rasheedat Ajibade separated both sides in the game. Nigeria, however, heads to the return leg in South Africa on Tuesday, hoping to pick a ticket to the Paris 2024 Olympics after 16 years of absence.

“I thought we were a bit unfortunate not to have at least two or three goals victory tonight but I think the team played well. I thought we were good defensively considering we had some new players at the back as we missed players like Ashleigh Plumptre and Tosin Demehim.

“I think the back four stood very strong. I can only remember two good opportunities that they (South Africa) had. Overall I thought we could have controlled the game well, try to finish up with the opportunities we had.

“But the bottom line is, we have one game left and we have to get the result,” Waldrum said.

Tuesday’s return leg at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria is still so much to play for with the Falcons only a goal up in the fixture.

The Banyana Banyana will fly back to Johannesburg on Saturday morning while the Super Falcons will fly out of Lagos on Sunday night.

Paris 2024 qualifiers: We were ‘robbed’ PK against Super Falcons – Banyana Banyana Coach reacts

Coach of the Banyana Banyana of South Africa, Desiree Ellis has said her side could have equalised and maybe awarded a penalty in Friday’s Paris 2024 CAF women Olympic qualifiers against the Super Falcons of Nigeria.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Ellis said this during the post-match press briefing shortly after the Super Falcons thrashed the Banyana Banyana of South Africa by a lone goal at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja, Nigeria.

The Super Falcons defeated South Africa by a lone goal after Rasheedat Ajibade converted a penalty kick in the 43rd minute of the match.

Chinwendu Ihezuo was through on goal but was brought down by Noko Matlou inside the area and the centre referee, Algerian Ghada Mehat blew her whistle and pointed straight to the spot in favour of Nigeria.

Outstanding goalkeeper Kaylin Swart had to work overtime to deny the hosts from extending their lead. Despite creating numerous chances for an equaliser, the game ended 1-0 in favour of the Super Falcons.

However, Ellis, speaking during the post-match press briefing, felt South Africa could have been awarded a penalty kick when Nigerian goalie, Chiamaka Nnadozie bumped into Jermaine Seoposenwe in the dying minutes of the game.

“Penalty decided the match. We could have equalised and maybe we could have gotten a penalty when Jermaine was fouled,” the Banyana Banyana gaffer said.

Ellis, nevertheless, praised her players for their efforts in the game and insisted that the game was not over.

“We are still in the game. Look, we said it was going to be a tight game but we are hopeful of overturning this result in the second leg.

“In the first half, we played too far from each other but we despite played what we wanted to play. In the second half, we started creating good chances.

“The game is not over. I am very proud of my team and we will take it back to Pretoria,” Ellis said.

Banyana Banyana will have to give it all in the second leg of the CAF Women’s Olympic qualifier against the Super Falcons of Nigeria.

The two African giants will lock horns for the second leg on 9 April 2024 at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria where Coach Ellis’ charges will be hoping to overturn the deficit.

  • Super Falcons vs South Africa: Coach Waldrum picks Ihezuo as MOTM

Super Falcons vs South Africa: Coach Waldrum picks Ihezuo as MOTM

Nigerian Super Falcons coach, Randy Waldrum has picked Chinwendu Ihezuo as man of the match of Friday’s Paris 2024 CAF women Olympic qualifiers against the Banyana Banyana of South Africa.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Super Falcons thrashed Banyana Banyana by a lone goal after Rasheedat Ajibade converted a penalty kick in the first half of the game.

Ihezuo was through on goal but was brought down by Noko Matlou inside the area and the centre referee, Algerian Ghada Mehat blew her whistle and pointed straight to the spot in favour of Nigeria.

Speaking during the post-match press briefing at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja, Waldrum described Ihezuo’s performance as brilliant and fantastic.

“For me, Chinwendu is the man of the match. She was fantastic up front. Her hold of play was brilliant. She tracked every ball down whether she had the chance to get it or not.

“For every ball, she put the defenders under unrest and that is what you want from a striker. For a player who put that kind of work in, she is outstanding.

“We knew she would do well. I have been following her up in Mexico. She is doing very well this season. She was great,” Waldrum said.

TNG reports after Ajibade’s penalty goal, all efforts to score in the match proved abortive for both sides as both goalkeepers made dashing saves at the two ends.

The result means that the Super Falcons will be travelling to South Africa with a slim win for the reverse fixture holding next week.

The overall winner of the two legged encounter will grab a slot to be one of Africa’s representatives at the 2024 Olympic games slated to be held in Paris, France.

  • South Africa Poll: Ex-president, Zuma files appeal against exclusion from May election

South Africa Poll: Ex-president, Zuma files appeal against exclusion from May election

Jacob Zuma ex South Africa’s  president  on Tuesday filed an appeal against a decision by electoral officials barring him from running in elections as tensions mount ahead of the May polls.

TheNewsGuru reports that South Africa electoral commission last week excluded the 81-year-old politician, who is campaigning for a new opposition party, over a 2021 contempt of court conviction.

However, court papers sighted by AFP, lawyers for Zuma and the party argued that the sentence did not disqualify him for it followed civil rather than criminal proceedings.

The commision “had no valid reasons to violate the political rights of President Zuma,” the papers said.

“(Zuma) was not an accused, he was not charged with an offence by a criminal court, he was not involved in any criminal trial proceedings”.

The General election has been scheduled to hold on May 29 in what is expected to be the most competitive vote since the advent of democracy in 1994.

The ruling African National Congress (ANC) is struggling in the polls and risks losing its parliamentary majority for the first time since the end of apartheid, amid a weak economy and allegations of corruption and mismanagement.

Among the groups that seek to capitalise on the ANC’s weakness is Zuma’s new uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party.

Named after the ANC’s former armed wing during the anti-apartheid struggle, it looks poised to win a large share of the vote in the battleground region of KwaZulu-Natal — Zuma’s home province — with some polls even putting it at 13 per cent nationwide.
