South Africa: Uncertainty over Zulu King’s health as spokesman denies reports

Uncertainty reigned on Sunday over the health of South Africa’s Zulu king, the head of the country’s most influential traditional monarchy, with his spokesman denying reports he had been hospitalised.

Misuzulu Zulu, 48, ascended the throne last year after the death of his father, Goodwill Zwelithini, amid a bitter feud over the royal succession.

Overnight on Saturday, the influential Zulu prime minister, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, said in a press release that the monarch had been hospitalised in the neighbouring country of Eswatini after falling ill.

The king believe he was being poisoned, after the sudden and unexpected death of one of his close advisers on Saturday, he said.

Although the title of king of the Zulu nation does not bestow executive power, the monarchs wield great moral influence over more than 11 million Zulus, who make up nearly a fifth of South Africa’s population of 60 million people.

King Zwelithini, who died after more than 50 years in charge, left six wives and at least 28 children.

Misuzulu is the first son of Zwelithini’s third wife, who he designated as regent in his will.

The queen however died suddenly a month after Zwelithini, leaving a will naming Misuzulu as the next king, a development that did not go down well with other family members.

However, a statement released by Misuzulu’s newly appointed spokesperson, Prince Africa Zulu, said the monarch was in a “perfect condition” and was not in hospital.

Prince Africa dimmed the reports as defamatory and baseless. He however confirmed Xaba’s death.

Buthelezi said in the statement: “It is with great concern that I have received news from honourable Prince Vumile, brother to his Majesty King Mswati III, that his Majesty King Misuzulu kaZwelithini is being treated in a hospital in eSwatini, having taken ill earlier today.

“When his majesty began to feel unwell, he suspected that he too may have been poisoned. He immediately sought out medical treatment in eSwatini. I am informed that His Majesty felt uncomfortable seeking treatment in SA, as his parents had both received treatment in SA and subsequently died,” said Buthelezi.

BBtitans: Nigerian food, eating pattern shocks me – Thabang

South African Big Brother Titans ex-housemate, Thabang Mazibuko, has expressed surprise in what and how Nigerians eat their food.

Thabang said  he was shocked to find out that Nigerians eat “weird” foods.

The 21-year-old said the cultural similarities and differences between South Africans and Nigerians came to him as a shock as he got to understand the Nigerian culture better after spending 65 days with Nigerians in the Big Brother Titans’ house.

The 21-year old South African made this revelation during an interview with Hip TV.

He said, “I learned about how rich in culture Nigeria is. I thought South Africa is place that is rich in culture and great history but Nigeria has so many different cultures, so many different traditions; they have a really rich history and that is something that I learned that I don’t know [before].

“I learned about the different foods, food ethics and the way they eat food. I found out that in Nigeria they eat popcorn with sugar and peanuts [laughs]. That’s weird but okay, cool.

“The biggest takeaway is that there are a lot of similarities between us and they things that we eat. But custard I think it is the same thing but we eat it as a dessert but they [Nigerians] eat it as breakfast. That was also pretty shocking.”

Algeria 2023: Golden Eaglets overpower South Africa 3-2 to reach quarter-finals

Five-time world champions Nigeria, who pipped Zambia 1-0 in their opening match but then lost by the same margin to Morocco in their second game, fell behind as early as the 6th minute when Amajimbo drew the first blood by converting from their very first corner kick.

The Eaglets had the ball in the net four minutes later but it was ruled off-side. They continued to knock as Tockukwu Ogbadibo’s shot proved too weak to trouble the opposing goalkeeper and Light Eke’s header missed target.

Charles Agada, who also had been knocking on the door, brought Nigeria level in the 33rd minute when he nodded into the net from a corner kick with South Africa’s goalkeeper in no man’s land.

South Africa shot ahead once more but Light Eke restored Nigeria into the game two minutes after the restart.

Abubakar Abdullahi shot Nigeria into the lead for the first time in the match in the 63rd minute, and it remained that way as the Eaglets finished with six points and in second place in Group B, behind Morocco who also ended with six points but with superior goals difference.

Winner of first BBTitans, Khosi yet to come to terms with her victory

Winner of the first Big Brother Titans (BBTitans) Makhosazane Twala, simply known as Khosi, has said that she is yet to come to terms with the reality of winning the show.

She was declared the winner of the show on Sunday, April 2, 2023. With her win, she became $100,000 richer.

She however stated that she was yet to come to terms with her new status.

Speaking during a press conference, Khosi, who is a South African journalist and model, said, “The reality of winning the show has not dawned on me.

“Just this morning at my hotel, some people were trying to take pictures with me, and it caught me by surprise. It’s not something I’m used to.”

When asked if she would share the prize money with fellow contestants, she jokingly said she would. Her response was greeted with cheers by the former housemates present at the media parley.

Khosi also stated that her relationship with a fellow South African housemate, Thabang, was genuine.

The relationship between the duo was one of the major talking points of the show.

She said, “I did not play Kanaga (Jnr). Our relationship was genuine. I don’t know of the viewers saw it, but we had some really deep conversations.”

She also stated that she liked another Nigerian housemate, Yemi Cregx.

She said, “I really liked him even though it was not the perfect situation. He always lifted me up whenever I was down. The day he left the show, I felt really bad. I felt like I would be stuck in the house with people who didn’t like me, because he was the one person I trusted to give me good advice sometimes.

“However, I had to remind myself that I am a strong and independent woman.”

The journalist also stated that the show taught her many things about herself.

Asked what her major strengths and weaknesses were, she said, “Some of my greatest weaknesses were being impatient and having a lot of self-doubt. When I was the ‘head of house’, I felt like I was not worthy of it.

However, I have learnt to constantly keep going. While in the house, there were always obstacles. And, that’s the same thing that happens in real life. Things might not always go ones way, but one has to pull oneself up and face the challenges.

“As for my strength, I always know how to put in a strong face. It was really hard for me, but every morning, I would get up and have a big smile on my face. But deep inside, I was struggling.”

On how she would explore her strength outside the house, she said, “I need to know that I’m worthy of whatever opportunity I get. I have been crowned by Africa.”

South African former professional sprinter and convicted murderer, Oscar Pistorius, has been denied parole and will continue to serve his sentence.

Pistorius, who was denied parole on Friday (Mar. 31) would have to wait until a new parole hearing next year.

He had been sentenced in 2017 to 13 years in prison for the 2013 murder of his partner Reeva Steenkamp.

Some South Africans in Pretoria backed the decision by the prison board.

“Reeva will never come back. Her parents will never have peace, never and I also think, if it was my kid on that situation, I would want that person dead or be in jail,” Lebohang Mokoena shared.

“I still feel he needs to sit more in prison and serve more in prison so that the rest could learn. Because now if they are releasing people like this on a faster note, it wouldn’t be fair enough for for for South Africans,” Leonard Tshweo reckoned.

“I feel like he should serve more time because he is not ready to face the world,” Precious Matumba said.

“You know, now, most most of the people are dying. Most women are been killed everyday. So the justice system is failing us every time.”

The 36-year-old has always claimed he shot his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day in error after mistaking her for a dangerous intruder.

Steenkamp’s parents still believe he is lying and opposed Pistorius’ application for parole.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that on 14 February 2013, Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend, paralegal and model (Reeva Steenkamp), in his Pretoria home.

He claimed he had mistaken Steenkamp for an intruder hiding in the bathroom. He was arrested and charged with murder. At his trial the following year, Pistorius was found not guilty of murder, but guilty of culpable homicide.

He received a five-year prison sentence for culpable homicide and a concurrent three-year suspended sentence for a separate reckless endangerment conviction.

Pistorius was temporarily released on house arrest in 2015 while the case was presented on appeal to a panel at the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa, which overturned the culpable homicide verdict and convicted him of murder.

In July 2016, Judge Thokozile Masipa extended Pistorius’s sentence to six years.[17] On appeal by the state for a longer prison sentence, the Supreme Court of Appeal increased the prison term to a total of 15 years.
