South East will produce president, but not in 2027 – Umahi

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has said the South East will produce the President of Nigeria but not in the coming election in 2027 and also claimed the region is not being marginalized in the current administration.

He reacted to a publication by one Linus Anagboso (known as D-Big Pen) which claimed that the South East was neglected in road infrastructure development.

This is contained in a statement by Mohammed Ahmed, Director, Press and Public, in the Ministry and made available to newsmen on Monday.

Umahi said that the publication titled “The Politics of Asphalt: Why is the South East Missing from the Map?” was mischievous and deceptive.

He demanded that Anagboso retract the statement immediately.

According to the minister, President Bola Tinubu has been fair to all regions of the country, including the South East.

He noted that Tinubu had revived 90 per cent of abandoned road projects, some dating back to 2013, and still executing new ones without discrimination.

He also said that four Legacy Projects were approved to cover all six geo-political zones.

According to him, one of them, which runs from Cross River through Ebonyi, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa to Abuja, includes a significant portion in the South East; about 231.64 kilometres and is already awarded at a cost of N445.8 billion.

The minister further said that the last Federal Executive Council meeting approved the review of the corridor length to 231.64 km at the same contract sum.

He added that Anagboso deliberately misrepresented this as an Oyo-Benue road to mislead the public.

He listed major projects ongoing in the South East to include the Second Niger Bridge Access Roads; Section 2A in Delta (N146 billion) and Section 2B in Anambra (N176 billion).

Other major ongoing projects the minister said were the Enugu-Onitsha Road (208 km), with MTN Tax Credit funding of N202 billion and CBC handling the remaining sections for N150 billion.

”There is also the Enugu–Port Harcourt Road in four sections; Enugu-Abakaliki, Afikpo-Abia-Imo, Onitsha-Owerri-Aba, Aba-Ikot Ekpene, and Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene,” he said..

Umahi urged the people of the South East to support Tinubu, noting that his administration had shown fairness and love to the region.

He also commended the South East governors for supporting the Federal Government and urged citizens to stand by them as they work for their second term in office.

According to him, One day, the South East will produce the President of Nigeria, but not in 2027.

He reaffirmed his commitment to correcting any false claims meant to deceive the people.

Nigerian army speaks on planned attack against South-East

The Nigerian Army has reacted to a misleading video alleging that the Federal Government and South-East and Northern governors have planned to transport weapons to attack South-East residents.

The Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Ayeni, in a statement warned residents to avoid digitally manipulated voice and video content circulating on social media platforms.

Ayeni further described the claims as “entirely deceptive” and “a calculated attempt to incite disaffection among ethnic groups in the country.

Ayeni urged the public to remain vigilant and rely only on accurate and verified information.

He said, “The public is therefore urged to remain vigilant and rely only on accurate and verified information from credible sources, especially in this era of artificial intelligence and digitally manipulated content.

“Ordinarily, the Division/Operation Udo Ka will not dignify such baseless allegations with a response.

“However, in line with our overarching mission to ensure peace and security for socio-economic development in the region, we find it necessary to strongly condemn the misinformation.

“The deliberate misinformation is designed to instil fear and cause public anxiety. Furthermore, all security agencies operating in the South-East region have significantly fostered peaceful coexistence through the effective neutralisation of threats to physical security.”

Ayeni noted that any attempt by anyone or groups of persons to undermine the security architecture in the region would be futile.

South-East bloc threatens to dump PDP

The South-East bloc of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has threatened to reconsider its relationship with the party if the zone was denied the position of the party’s National Secretary.

This is contained in a communiqué issued at the end of South-East PDP Zonal Executive Committee (ZEC) meeting held on Wednesday in Enugu.

The document was signed by Chief Ali Odefa, Chairman, PDP, South-East Zone.

He said the ZEC unanimously recommended Mr Sunday Udeh-Okoye for the office of national secretary of the party.

“Therefore, we hope that this time around, the position of the South-East PDP regarding the Office of the National Secretary is accorded the honour and immediacy it deserves.

“However, in the event that our position is not promptly implemented by the party, the South- East PDP, as a family, will be compelled to reconsider our relationship with the PDP going forward,” he said.

Odefa urged PDP National Working Committee (NWC) to uphold its decision at its 600th meeting on April 29 which allowed the party’s Deputy National Secretary to function as Acting National Secretary.

This, he said, would be pending the time a substantive national secretary would be confirmed.

“The South-East ZEC further noted that the zone had to go through this process for the umpteenth time, unlike what obtains in the filling of vacant national offices by other zones.

“It is recalled that the South East ZEC met in October 2023 and nominated Udeh-Okoye to serve out the remaining term of the National Secretary.

“This position was reaffirmed during the Feb. 20, 2024 meeting of the PDP South-East ZEC. We also reiterated this during the meeting of ZEC in Enug today,” Odefa said.

The zonal chairman said that South-East had consistently served as PDP stronghold from the inception of the party.

He said that while the party had been losing key members following post-2023 general election, the South-East PDP was at the vanguard of strengthening the party by rallying major opposition figures into its fold.

“In Enugu State, the governorship candidate of the Labour Party is back to the PDP; two members of the House of Representatives are equally back from Labour Party.

“Furthermore, PDP seats in the Enugu State House of Assembly have grown from 10 at the inception of the Assembly to 20 today,’’ he said.

He recalled that on March 21 the Supreme Court brought to a close the protracted legal tussle over the position of the National Secretary of the PDP.

According to him, the apex court, in its ruling, held that the issue of the leadership of a political party was the internal affairs of the affected party.

“The PDP Governors’ Forum, at its April 14, 2025 meeting held in Ibadan recommended that the South-East PDP should nominate a candidate.

“This followed the consideration of the report of the panel it set up to review the Supreme Court judgment.

“Their position is that the candidate would serve out the remaining tenure of the National Secretary of the Party zoned to the region,’’ Odefa said.

South-East’s interests best secured under APC – Uzodimma

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC) offers the best platform to protect and advance the interests of the Southeast region. Speaking at a meeting of Southeast APC leaders held in Enugu, Uzodimma urged party stakeholders to intensify grassroots mobilization by highlighting the benefits of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The gathering, aimed at strengthening the party’s influence in the region ahead of the 2027 general elections, included prominent Southeast figures such as Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, and Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology Uche Nnaji, among others.

Uzodimma, who also chairs the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF), told reporters after the meeting that regional integration into the ruling party would position the Southeast closer to national power structures. He emphasized that embracing the APC would increase the region’s access to political influence and developmental benefits.

Citing the presence of top government officials from the Southeast within the APC—such as governors, legislators, and ministers—Uzodimma said the region is already making significant inroads. He stressed the importance of unity among Southeast APC leaders, calling for tolerance and cooperation to build a stronger political front.

“We have resolved to treat the Southeast as one political family, overlook our differences, and work together towards common goals,” he said.

  • FG review SDGs implementation in South-East

FG review SDGs implementation in South-East

The Federal Government has undertaken a comprehensive review of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the South-East region, utilizing the 2025 Voluntary National Review (VNR) framework, with the express purpose of achieving the established targets by 2030.

Dr. Babatunde Ipaye, the Lead Consultant responsible for the Development of Nigeria’s VNR, made this announcement during a review event held under the theme of “Regional Stakeholders Consultation” in Enugu on Wednesday.

The event in Enugu, centered on the VNR (a national progress reporting process for the 2030 Agenda), provided a platform for stakeholders from four South-East states to assess SDGs implementation.

Dr. Ipaye underscored the importance of collaborative idea exchange and strategy development among stakeholders to achieve SDG goals.

He said the Southeast Consultation Forum was aimed at discussing ways to tackle critical challenges facing the region.

In her keynote address, Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, said the 2030 Agenda provided a holistic development framework for addressing economic, social and environmental challenges.

Orelope-Adefulire explained that out of the 366 VNRs conducted and presented by 191 countries, Nigeria has presented two VNRs in 2017 and 2020 with the hope to present its third VNR this year.

“Conceptually, the VNRs are more useful when conducted through an inclusive, broad-based and participatory process.

“This is exactly why we are here to consult widely with key stakeholders across the key segments of the Nigerian society.

“This is our idea of the ‘whole of government and society’ approach to the implementation of the SDGs in Nigeria.”

“Incidentally, this year’s VNR is coming at a time the world leaders adopted the “Pact for the Future” during the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) last September,” she said.

She added that through the pact, “our leaders have collectively reaffirmed their commitment to take bold, ambitious, accelerated, just and transformative actions to fast-track the achievement of the SDGs”.

Also speaking, Mr Yahaya Umar, Head VNR Secretariat, said that citizen engagement was vital to the successful implementation of the SDGs.

In her remarks, Onyinye Okpalama, SDGs Focal Person in Enugu State, commended the state’s efforts, rating it high on SGDs implementation plan.

Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, Enugu’s Secretary to the State Government, said the event was for celebrating successes and addressing gaps, noting inclusivity for rural areas and youth via technology.

He urged innovative solutions, partnerships, and amplifying marginalized voices for SDG achievement.

Onyia emphasized the SDGs as a call to action, stating the South-East’s vital role in Nigeria’s progress.
Success was attributed to state socioeconomic policies.

“While progress has been made in the South-East region in areas such as access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, we must ask ourselves: Are these advancements reaching those who need them the most?

“Are rural communities benefiting from these interventions to the degree that we leave no one behind,” he asked.
According to him, let us not only be bold in identifying challenges but also innovative in proposing solutions. Let us strengthen collaborations and partnerships that will drive meaningful change.

“Most importantly, let us ensure that the voices of the people, especially those at the grassroots who we as various stakeholders represent, are heard, respected, and integrated into the overall national report,” he said.

  • Why ritual killing is on the rise in South-East – Stakeholders

Why ritual killing is on the rise in South-East – Stakeholders

Some stakeholders including Police Commands in Anambra, Ebonyi and Enugu States have attributed the recent rise in ritual killings to the “get-rich-quick syndrome” among the youth in the South East.

Recall ritual killings among the youth and other crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping and cultism have ravaged the zone recently.

These prompted some state governments to establish private security outfits to complement efforts of security agencies in tackling insecurity in the country.

In Anambra, Gov Charles Soludo inaugurated the “Homeland Security Law,” and joint security force such as operations “Udogachi and Agunechemba” to tackle the security challenges in the state.

The police and other security agencies and citizens are also collaborating to reclaim the states back from suspected criminals.

SP Tochukwu Ikenga the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state and some residents of Awka spoke to NAN in Awka, in a survey on the rise of ritual killings in some states of the country.

Ikenga described ritual killings as making human sacrifice (killing of person(s)) for religious, spiritual and superstitious beliefs.

“It is a very disturbing crime, unlike others, because it involves human sacrifice either dead or alive.

“Why ritual killing is high among the youth between the ages of 18 and 40 is because of the current high rate of get-rich-quick syndrome ravaging the society,”.

He said that people engaged in such crime for the purpose of fortification, wealth creation among others.

“It is more like an ideology among persons involved,” Ikenga said.

The PPRO said that the state government and citizens had joined the police and other security agencies in tackling the menace.

According to him, here in Anambra, the state government has established the “Homeland Security Law,” profiling of native doctors in order to monitor their operations.

“The government also established security outfits such as operations Udogachi and Agunechemba to tackle insecurity while the citizens divulge vital information to the police to enable us go after suspected criminals”.

The spokesperson said that many of the suspected criminals lived among the people, therefore the public must know many of them.

“This is why the people must divulge information to the police and other security agencies to act.

“Recently, such information led to the clampdown on some native doctors in the state, who are being investigated.

“If such ritual killing is established against a suspect, it is treated as a murder case,” he said.

Ikenga disclosed that the command was making efforts to put up a chart for ritual killings in the state.

He added that the victims of ritual killings were not limited to youth alone, but also adults, depending on the purpose of the ritual.

The PPRO said that the command was also reaching out to parents and guardians, religious bodies, youth organisations and traditional institutions among others to create forums to guide the youth against vices.

Similarly, Mrs Rachel Yohanna of Davina Care Foundation, Awka, said it was unfortunate that many individuals, especially the youth engaged  in money rituals driven by a quest for quick wealth.

Yohanna identified poverty, unemployment, lack of parental care and peer pressure as some of the reasons driving ritual killings in the society.

She said that young women and children were the major victims of ritual killings because of their perceived vulnerability.

“Get-rich-quick syndrome is prevalent among our youth, who often perceive wealth as a measure of success and status. Some of them want to become rich at all cost because they are from poor background or unemployed.

“Some parents did not also instill value in their children; they grow up and behave anyhow. This phenomenon has led to an increase in ritual killings as individuals seek shortcuts to financial prosperity,” she said.

She urged parents to prioritise their children’s upbringing by teaching them morals, hardwork, societal values and respect for human life, so that when they grow they would never depart from it.

Also speaking, Dr Helen Obi, a lawyer, blamed flashy lifestyle  on social media and the society, especially religious leaders who idolise the wealthy, even when the source of wealth was illegitimate.

“The display of wealth on social media, societal glorification of wealth usually exacerbate these practices, creating a cycle of desperation and moral erosion within communities,” Obi said.

In response to the increasing rate of ritual killings, the state government, under Gov. Chukwuma Soludo, enacted the Anambra State Homeland Security Law 2025, on Jan. 17, to combat criminal activities associated with ritual killings and fraudulent spiritual practices.

According to the governor, the law would address the root causes of crime and restore the state’s reputation for moral integrity.

Sections 20 and 18 (1) (2), of the Homeland Security Law 2025 addressed the issues of ritual killings.

For instance, Section 20 states that “Any person who performs or requires of any person the performance of any rituals involving human parts, commits an offence and is liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term of 25 years without an option of fine.”

Community leaders have also taken proactive measures by holding security summits and calling for collaboration with security agencies to curb ritual killings.

These concerted efforts by the government and community leaders reflect a strong commitment to addressing and eradicating the menace of ritual killings in Anambra State.

In Ebonyi, SP Joshua Ukandu, Spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Ebonyi Command, expressed worry over the spate of ritual killings across the country, adding that the menace was of a great concern to the nation.

Ukandu however, noted that there had been no record or report of ritual killings in the state.

He said that the command had been proactive in checkmating other crimes in the state.

“The command have not gotten any report of such crime and have not arrested any one in connection with ritual killings.  We hear about the incident, but not in Ebonyi state,” he said.

On the increasing rate of ritual killings across some states, Ukandu blamed it on the eroding moral fabric of the society and the quest to get quick wealth.

According to him, yes, there are laws to deter people from using human being for ritual; you know murder is a capital offence in Nigeria, with sentences ranging from life imprisonment to execution of the offender.

“From the stories all over, women are more vulnerable and likely victims. It is very unfortunate, the crime is rampant among youths because of the quest to get money.

He said that there was the need to integrate traditional rulers in every state of the federation into the system to help tackle the crime.

“We must begin to teach the children good moral livings, I believe that will probably help,” he said.

Also Mr Mathew Unakwe, a legal practitioner in Ebonyi, called for nationwide campaign against such heinous crime in the efforts to build better environment.

Unakwe blamed the security agencies for increasing crime in the society, calling on Nigerians, especially the government to do everything possible to eradicate ritual killings.

“Yes, there are laws prohibiting ritual killings but we are not enforcing them. Well, I must tell you, the major cause of the act is the get quick rich syndrome among people,” he stated.

Mr Christopher Okorie, Coordinator, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Ebonyi, commended the development in Anambra state on the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators of such crime, urging other states to support the initiative.

Mr Ignatius Nwankwor, political analyst, said that ritual killings for money making was never new among persons in the country.

Nwankwo called for collaborative efforts among the security agencies, traditional rulers, schools and faith based institutions in checkmating such crime.

The Spokesman for the Police Command in Enugu State, SP Daniel Ndukwe, also said that “there are no ritual killings in Enugu State known to the police.

“We don’t have incidences of ritual killings in Enugu state. I cannot confirm or react to what does not exist in the state.

“It is difficult for me to respond to something that we do not have a record or reported case on.”

Some residents of Nsukka in Nsukka Local Government of Enugu State have also blamed the rise in ritual killings to get-rich-quick due to much recognitions and respect accorded to rich people.

Dr George Akubue, a Lecturer at the Institute of African Studies, University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), said that until stakeholders in every community started screening sources of wealth of people especially youths, ritual killings for money making would continue to escalate.

“It’s unfortunate that money has become everything in the society, people no longer ask for somebody’s source of wealth before associating with him or her.

“Some youths are given chieftaincy titles in communities by traditional rulers during festivities simply because they came home with fleet of flash Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) and much money in their pockets, nobody will ask sources of their wealth.

“Everybody knows that all these ritual killings and cutting of human body into parts by the so called Yahoo Yahoo boys are for money making,” he said.

The Don warned that if nothing serious was done to stop the ugly trend, the security challenges in the country would take a new dimension as more youths would join the bandwagon of get-rich-quick syndrome.

Akubue commended Gov. Charles Solido of Anambra State for rising up to the challenge to crack-down on all fake native doctors and pastors in the state and urged other governors in the country to do same in their states before the situation got out of hand.

Also speaking, Mr Samuel Ike, a  Lawyer and Right Activist, expressed concern why these bad boys target young girls for the ritual killings and  urged security agencies to brace up to their responsibilities.

“If nothing urgent is done, time will come when parents would be locking up their daughters in the house for fear of being used for rituals.

“Yes security agencies may be doing their best but their best is not enough; I feel bad when i hear some of these criminals arrested escaped while being detained.

“Security agencies should ensure that all suspects of ritual killingsl face the full weight of the law so as to serve as deterrent to others planning to commit same crime in future.

“Security agencies should from time to time raid beer joints, eateries, recreational parks and hotels to arrest these criminals before they carry out their evil acts.

The activist urged Federal Government to consider as a matter of urgency, to establish a Special Court that would handle all cases of ritual killings.

“If this court is established, it will help to fast track the process of judicial proceeding in the trial of ritual killing suspects.

“It will not fast track judicial process on those standing trial on ritual killings but will also ensure that justice is served on time without much delay,” he said.

Tinubu gave the assurance at an interactive session with South East leaders in Enugu during his visit to the state on Saturday, Mr Bayo Onanuga, his spokesman, said in a statement.

The President also pledged that his administration would support the development of the Anambra Basin as a significant energy reserve.

The basin is estimated to hold up to 1 billion barrels of oil and 30 billion cubic feet of gas.

“On the support of the gas infrastructure. Sure, gas is an alternative to petrol. There is no wasting of time than to invest more in it. We will do it together, and I am lucky I have good governors,” he said.

President Tinubu praised Gov. Peter Mbah for his development model and philosophy after inaugurating several projects executed by the state government.

He pledged that the federal government would continue to support Enugu and other states in their development efforts.

Among the projects inaugurated by the President are the GTC Smart Green School; New Haven/Bisalla Road, the International Conference Center, the Command-and-Control Center, and 150 patrol vehicles equipped with surveillance cameras.

The President also performed the virtual commissioning of other notable projects from the Enugu State Government House.

At the inauguration of the Command-and-Control Center, the President said investment in security would bring rapid development.

“This is a profound demonstration of what we can do together. It reassures me that more revenue going to the sub-nationals and local government is not a waste. It is for development.

“We have committed leaders like Peter Mbah taking Enugu on the path of 21st-century development, taking Enugu to greater heights, and building our tomorrow today,” he said.

President Tinubu further lauded the governor, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for demonstrating an irrevocable commitment to human development.

“I don’t care which party you come from; you are my friend. Alex Otti of Abia State is also doing very well. It is not about the differences in languages and place of birth.

“No one of us has control of the mother tongue. God created us, and you can find yourself in Enugu, Onitsha or Lagos.

“We are all members of one huge family called Nigeria, but we live in different rooms in the same house. We must build this house to satisfy our immediate and future needs,” he said.

Mbah commended the Tinubu administration for establishing the South East Development Commission and liberalising the electricity sector through the Electricity Act (Amendment).

“Your Excellency, your credential as a true federalist stands out brightly, and the legacies thereof will long earn you resounding accolades.

“In signing the Electricity Act (Amendment) Bill, you liberalised electricity generation, transmission, and distribution. That singular act will consistently rank as an enduring legacy.

“It is noteworthy that Enugu State was the first sub-national to which the NERC ceded regulatory oversight of the local electricity market. That reflects how swiftly we are pursuing our goals,” he said.

  • Army debunks alleged mass killing in South East

Army debunks alleged mass killing in South East

The Nigerian Army (NA) has denied  allegation of mass killing in the South Eastern Nigeria, as alleged by Simon Ekpa, a self acclaimed leader of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).

This is contained in a statement by the Director, Army Public Relations, Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, on Wednesday in Abuja.

Nwachukwu said that Ekpa, one of the  leaders of the IPOB terrorists had been carrying out  mischievous and systematic campaign of calumny against the  army.

He said that Ekpa had through spurious and unfounded claims, raised alarm in a viral video alleging that troops of Nigerian army were carrying out mass killing of innocent Igbos and dumping them in the river.

According to him, the report also contained some unimaginable and not well couched falsehood targeted at whipping-up negative sentiments against troops and inciting anarchy in the South East region.

“Contrary to the falsehood being spread from the devious propaganda machinery of the desperate and self-serving terrorists’ leader, the army wishes to state that it has conducted a comprehensive investigation on the allegations made by the devious infamous leader and his associates.

“Accordingly,  we wish to  categorically refute these baseless claims by throwing more light on the occurrence.

“In the first  instance, the troops in the video footage are not personnel of the Nigerian Army as the  insignia visible on their berets clearly identifies them as personnel of the Nigerian Navy, who were engaged in a routine test firing of a weapon system mounted on a vehicle.

“In order to ensure safety of other road users and commuters, the troops took precautionary measures by halting vehicular movement along the road, until the test firing was safely concluded.

“Observers were also kept at a safe distance, maintaining transparency and prioritizing the safety of all involved,” he explained.

Nwachukwu said that preliminary findings also indicated that the occurrence took place in the South West region of the country and not the South East as advertently portrayed by the alarmist propagandists.

He added that there was no evidence to support the assertion that individuals were being shot at in the river, nor had there been any report from local communities regarding the discovery of corpses in the area.

“Consequently,  the army wishes to enjoin the public to disregard the unfounded claims and irredeemable falsehood  being propagated by Simon Ekpa and his associates, whose apparent objective is to disseminate misinformation and incite unrest,” he added.

Nwachukwu said the army and indeed,  sister services and other security agencies  remained steadfast in their commitment to maintaining peace and order, ensuring safety and security of all citizens in the country.

According to him, the Nigerian army is vigilant and prepared to counter any attempt to destabilize the southeast region.

“We reaffirm our dedication to protecting the lives and livelihoods of all Nigerians and will continue to work tirelessly to uphold peace and order.

“We encourage the public to seek verified information and not be misled by those who aim to incite violence and disorder.

“We salute the courage and patriotism of well-meaning and law-abiding ndigbo, domiciled in the South East and across the nation.

“Despite the brazen atrocities and threats being perpetrated by Ekpa and his terrorists group, these patriotic Igbos have  continued to build bridges of peace and harmony across the country and promoting our national ideal of a united Nigeria.

“The Nigerian army remains a pillar of stability and security, committed to the well-being of the nation and her people,” he said.
