2023: Edwin Clark receives Anyim Pius Anyim, says South-East must produce next president

Elder statesman and leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Chief Edwin Clark, has insisted that the South-East geopolitical zone must produce the next president of Nigeria.

He said this when a presidential aspirant, Sen. Anyim Pius Anyim, visited him on Friday.

Clark encouraged Anyim to work hard with other leaders across the country to build consensus for equity and unity in Nigeria, according to a statement after the visitation.

Chief Clark reaffirmed his passionate “belief that the presidency of Nigeria in 2023 must go to the Southern part of Nigeria and indeed to South-East zone”.

“I encourage you and others to continue the task of persuading and reassuring other Nigerians to share that vision”, Clark added.

Anyim told the elder statesman and First Republic Minister of Information that he was running for the Presidency of Nigeria because he understood the challenges facing Nigeria and had what it takes to fix them.

The former Senate President who is contesting the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party took the opportunity to consult with Clark on the state of the nation and his plan for the future.

“I thank God that Chief Edwin Clark will soon be 95 years old and yet he is blessed with phenomenal memory, lucid and curious mind, a benevolent heart, and boundless goodwill for all men. I thank God for your health and will forever cherish your counsel.

“I will dedicate myself with full enthusiasm and conviction to advance the vision of equity in Nigeria, the unity of our nation, the peace and prosperity of all citizens,” he said.

2023: Zone presidency to South East to stop IPOB’s agitation for secession, Northern groups tell political parties

A coalition of northern groups under the umbrella of Arewa Concerned Civil Society Organisations of Nigeria has declared support for the zoning of the 2023 presidency to the South-East in the interest of equity, fairness and justice.

The group said that zoning the presidency to the South-East will automatically stop the agitations for secession by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and also promote national unity and cohesion.

Addressing a news conference in Kaduna on Monday, the spokesman of the group, Abdulsalam Kazeem, urged all political parties to consider zoning their presidential tickets to the region, noting that the zone has been largely marginalised in the political equation of the country.

“The people of the South-East no longer feel as if they are respected in the Nigerian project. Their people are out causing mayhem, asking people to sit down at home at the detriment of the Federal Government and state governments which has a direct effect on the IGR of those states,” he said.

“This is how the crisis of the North-East started. Today, the Nigerian government is the highest importer of ammunition despite the enormous resources we have allocated to the fight against insurgency, we have nothing to show for it.

“They should zone the presidency of Nigeria to the South-East in the interest of fairness, peace and tranquility. If for nothing, for the purpose of the masses they promised to govern.

“We hereby urge all political parties to zone their presidency tickets to the South-East for justice, equity and fairness.”

The Northern group canvassed support for former President of the Senate and a one-time Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim.

While describing Anyim as a bridgebuilder and a detribalised Nigerian who will ensure that all interests are protected across the board, Kazeem noted that only the South-East and the North-East out of the six geopolitical zones of the country have not occupied either President or Vice-President seat since 1999 till date.

According to the group’s spokesman, such discrimination is against any democratic standard.

  • 2023: How Southeast can clinch presidency – Anyim, Ezeife

2023: How Southeast can clinch presidency – Anyim, Ezeife

Chukwuemeka Ezeife, a former governor of Anambra, and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, as well as others have advised the Southeast region to persuade other regions to support them to clinch the presidency in 2023.

They said this on Saturday at the United For Better Nigeria Initiative (UBNI) National Convention in Abuja.

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, said that it is neither a right nor was it legal for the southeast to demand presidency.

Anyim said that they had to persuade other regions to support their dream if they would produce a president in 2023.

“Is it right for the Southeast to produce the next president?, my answer is legally no, and the reason is that the constitution is clear, the constitution says every Nigerian of 40 years is entitled to aspire for that office.

“On the other side, morally is it right? is it an entitlement? I will say yes because the federal character principle enshrined in the constitution encourages rotation.

“The reason I have to make this clarification is that when the right you have is not legal, the only approach and the instrument you have is persuasion.

“So the approach, the language will be to persuade others to see reason with you that morally they should support you to take a turn since it rotates.”

Anyim therefore encouraged the Southeast that as they go ahead with the movement of advocating for a president, it should be with an altitude persuasion.

According to Ezeife, the kind of Nigeria God wanted when He created Nigeria was for her to develop into a super power among nations, and raise respect and dignity for all blacks on earth.

He said that one of the ways to achieve the feats the nation wanted was to carry everybody along without discrimination.

“So I found Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo and other groups in this place talking about the need for federal character. If you do it that way, there will be unity, if there is fairness, equity, justice, you will have unity and progress.

“In the absence of those, you see where we are now. It is not a matter of give us president, we don’t give, you have to work for it, the Igbo does not prostrate.

“The Igbo man does not keel down but this time, we are prepared to kneel down to every part of Nigeria, every group, every ethnic group in Nigeria, we are prepared to even prostrate because we believe in this country.”

Ezeife said that Igbo people had contributed greatly to the development of Nigeria in terms of infrastructure, intellect and business.

He therefore said that it was time to give Igbo people the chance to build Nigeria to the standard God wanted it.

Mrs Nkolika Mkparu ,Coordinator-General, UBNI, said that there was a feeling of political marginalisation after over a century (by 2023) the Southeast region is yet to produce a president.

Mkparu said that UBNI, a non-partisan political advocacy group, which had been involved in enlightenment for a united Nigeria deemed it fit to beam searchlight on the issue.

She said that in achieving this political balance, the support from the Southeast region alone would not suffice, therefore there is the need to appeal to other regions to support it.

“The truth of the matter is that our strongest strengths are from the north, our great leaders are from the north, so we are working with the whole nation with the understanding that inclusiveness is what will lead Nigeria to a better future.

“Inclusiveness that will bring us together in one union is what will bring our country together.

“Nigeria is huge enough for everybody, Nigeria has the capacity to hold everybody, Nigeria has the intellectuals, Nigeria has all it takes to lift the county, all we are asking for is to give the southeast also a chance to lead.

“All the other parts have tried, south south has tried, north has tried, west has tried since over 50 years now, so we are hoping that we should be allowed to try.”

The Guest Speaker, Prof. Mutiullahi Olasupo, who is the Director of Institute for Peace Leadership and Development Studies, University of Abuja, said that it was right for the southeast to produce the next president in the interest of peace and natural law of justice.

He said it was imperative for all Nigerians to exclusively resolve that the presidency in 2023 should go to the southeast.

He said that the same mechanism that produced former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999, should also repeat itself by 2023, to produce a president from the south east.

“Out of all the six geo-political zones in this country, it is only the southeast that has not produced the president in this country.

“Does that mean that the south east is not being recognized as a geopolitical zone in Nigeria?” he asked.

Killings: Respect my age – Elder statesman Amechi begs Igbo youths

An Elder Statesman, Chief Mbazulike Amechi, 92, has urged Igbo youths to respect his age and stop the wanton killings and destruction of property in the South East Zone.

Amechi made the appeal on Wednesday in Abakaliki while briefing newsmen after a closed door meeting with Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi.

The elder statesman said that he was in the state to brief the governor as the Chairman of the South East Governors Forum on his efforts to stop the incessant violence in the zone especially by youths.

“I led a delegation of Igbo leaders to President Muhammadu Buhari on the growing trend of violence in the country especially in the southeast zone.

“He was happy with the visit and we are expecting positive results because peace and reconciliation cannot be achieved with violence,” he said.

The First Republic Minister regretted the reported killing of policemen and civilians in Ebonyi and other parts of the country and called for an end to such carnages.

“I plead with all agitating groups both known and unknown to give peace a chance for full restoration of security to the zone and the entire country.

“I am the only surviving minister of the first republic and plead that my age should be respected.

“I should be assisted to make peace in the zone and country before I join my maker.

“Youths are presently witnessing a period when the naira has no value, passengers disembark from their vehicles to cross security check points among other issues,” he said.

Amechi recalled the events of the 1979 and 1999 general elections in the country and noted that Igbos missed the opportunities of clinching the presidential positions on both occasions.

“I believe the Igbos have qualified and respected individuals who can clinch and acquaint themselves creditably as the country’s president.

“I advise aspirants for the position from the zone to work towards ensuring that their respective political parties nominate an Igbo man for the position.

“”When Igbos emerge as the candidates of the respective parties, we would support whoever wins,” the nonagenarian said.

IPOB sends messages to members in South East, Abuja as Nnamdi Kanu appears in court today

There will be no lockdown in the Southeast today over the court appearance of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu, the group said in a statement on Wednesday

In a statement by its Media and Publicity, Emma Powerful, IPOB urged members and friends in Abuja and its environs to show solidarity.

It asked security operatives to refrain from infringing on the rights of those who would be in court.

The statement reads in part: “We wish to inform Biafrans, friends of Biafra and lovers of freedom that our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will be in court tomorrow (today) in Abuja.

“We, therefore, urge Biafrans living in Abuja and its environs to come out en masse to solidarise with our leader.

“Meanwhile, there will be no lockdown tomorrow (today) in any part of Biafra land as a result of the court appearance.

“Biafrans resident in Biafraland, as well as visitors to Biafraland, are free to go about their lawful businesses without fear of molestation or intimidation.

“We have not asked or authorised anybody to monitor or enforce any lockdown. Again, there will be no lockdown in Biafraland for tomorrow’s (today’s) court appearance of our leader.

“Only Biafrans and friends of Biafra in Abuja and its environs are encouraged to be at the court premises.

“As a non-violent movement, we urge everyone to remain peaceful and law-abiding in all their conduct.

“Security operatives should also refrain from infringing on the fundamental rights of people who come to cheer our leader.

“We all know that our leader is not being persecuted because of any crime other than his fight for our collective freedom.

“Therefore, we owe him a duty to stand by him until this darkness is over. We are all together in it.

“We commend the legal team of our leader for their untiring efforts to defend our leader who is innocent of the charges preferred against him.

“We urge all Biafrans to keep praying for our leader, and the full restoration of Biafra Republic.”

Kanu is on trial on terrorism and treasonable felony charges before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

He has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since he was brought back to Nigeria.

How Nnamdi Kanu that can’t win governorship contest in any S’East state is slowing down region’s interest in 2023 presidential poll – Tanko Yakasai

A founding member of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Tanko Yakasai has said that the South East needs to do more if the region is serious about winning the 2023 presidential election.

Speaking on Monday on a monitored Channels Television programme, the elder statesman was of the opinion that there is something lacking in the way the Southeastern region is treating the quest for the presidency in the next general election.

According to Yakasai, the missing ingredient in the South East’s drive to lead the country in 2023, is the dearth of constructive engagement with other regions.

“I am a strong supporter of a president from the South after Buhari and also if he can come from the South East no problem; I will support it.

“The quarrel is that this is not something that you just stay at home and think that people will come to your house to dash it to you.

“You have to show interest, you have to be serious, you have to try to convince people that you are really up to the task.

“This is what in my opinion is missing in the South East,” the politician asserted.

In his viewpoint, there is a desire shown by the region as regards getting the presidency but the people are not exerting their position to manifest their desire and to convince other people.

The rights activist also opined that there is a certain uncertainty in Nigeria about the position of the South East especially because of the region’s handling of Nnamdi Kanu and his ideas.

“There is doubt because this Nnamdi Kanu whom ordinarily would not be a good candidate for the governorship of any of the southeastern states is now claiming the attention and support of prominent people in the South East,” Mr. Yakasai stressed.

According to him, the attention given to Kanu within the region is stirring doubt and causing people to wonder if truly the South East is ready to produce a credible candidate that would serve Nigeria with all his/her heart.

The elder statesman advised that though the card lays now on the desk of the South Easterners, the region must try to reach out to garner support for its goal to be achieved when the polls come around.

  • Setback for Uba as APC members decamps en masse in Aguata LGA to PDP, endorses Ozigbo

Setback for Uba as APC members decamps en masse in Aguata LGA to PDP, endorses Ozigbo

A few days to the governorship election in Anambra State, Valentine Ozigbo, the flag-bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gains momentum as the entire executives of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in his hometown dump the ruling party and join the PDP.

In a power-packed ceremony held at Grand East Hotel in Awka on Monday, November 1, 2021, the 37 APC executives led by the chairman, Mr Paul Chuks Umenduka threw their weight behind Mr Ozigbo declaring him as “the right leader to take Anambra to the promised land”.

According to Umenduka, the party is abandoning its candidate, Senator Andy Uba, because they feel he is “the worst option for Anambra” and their conscience would not allow them to “support evil in their state”.

Aguata LGA is the home of Senator Andy Uba the flag-bearer of the APC and Professor Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). So this move is a significant boost for Ozigbo ahead of the November 6 election.

This is a more significant blow to Uba because the APC chairman in his ward Uga Ward II, Christian Anaeto and other leaders like Ndubuisi Daniel are also among the thirty-seven leader who dumped the party and joined PDP, effectively leaving Uba without a structure in his own locality.

“We see in Valentine Ozigbo, a leader who will rescue Anambra from the terrible state we are in. We see in him a humble leader who will carry everybody along, who will listen to everyone,” Umenduka said.

“We see in Valentine Ozigbo the new generation leader that will take Anambra to the promised land.

“So, we the entire executives of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Aguata LGA hereby decamp from our party and join the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“We hereby collapse our structures into PDP and throw our support behind Valentine Ozigbo. Come November 6, we are urging all Ndi Anambra to come out in their numbers and vote for PDP, the Umbrella party which is big and accomodating to all.”

Some of the APC leaders who were at the decamping ceremony were Ezenwata Obimma (Deputy LG Chairman), Bibiana Mbamalu (Woman Leader), Vitua Ajugo (Youth Leader, Edith Michael (Exco), Theophilis Onyekwe (Exco), Chigbo Agazie (Umuchi 1), Ifeanyi Eenwamma (Auditor), Chibuike Okpalauchaegbu (Achinna 1), Ndubueze Ezebekwe, Emeka Ilo, Theresa Obiajunwa, Edwin Okeke, Edith Michael, Okoye Okechukwu.

In his response, Valentine Ozigbo thanked the new PDP members for their courage and urged them to be steadfast, affirming that the PDP would win the Saturday election.

The Anambra governorship election of November 6 promises to be tension-soaked as the contest comes down to three major political parties, Mr Valentine Ozigbo of the PDP, Professor Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and Senator Andy Ubah of the APC.

BREAKING: IPOB cancels one week sit-at-home directive in South East, asks Anambra residents to vote on Saturday

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has cancelled its one week sit-at-home order across the South-East.

IPOB said the order was called off following consultations with elders, traditional, and religious leaders from the Southeast.

Spokesman of IPOB, Emma Powerful, disclosed this in a statement he issued on Thursday evening.

According to Powerful: “Following the genuine intervention of our elders, esteemed traditional Institutions /Rulers and Religious Leaders, and after a due consideration of the positive impacts of their engagement, and sequel to the fact that Our elders have spoken in our terms , the Leadership of IPOB ably lead by MAZI NNAMDI Kanu hereby and immediately CALL OFF THE ONE WEEK SIT AT HOME earlier declared to commence tomorrow, November 5 to November 10, 2021.

“We have equally considered several appeals by our mothers who earn their living based on their daily economic activities which will obviously be affected if Biafra land is locked down for one whole week. It’s never our intention to add to the pains of our people, hence our decision to suspend the sit-at-home.

“IPOB leadership is only interested in Our referendum and peaceful agitation for self determination, and can not by under any guise be seen to be interfering with any electoral process.”

The separatist group urged people of the Anambra State to come out en masse and vote for candidates of their choice on Saturday.

“The people of Anambra State should go out enmasse and peacefully exercise their franchise come 6th November 20121 and accordingly, chose a leader of their Choice and should not be intimidated by anybody, group of persons or security agents.

“Credible intelligence available to us confirmed that the Nigeria DSS has concluded arrangement to deploy a branch of their trained terrorist group to Anambra state come 6th Day 2021, to unleash mayhem on our people and attribute the killing to peaceful IPOB members.

“Anambrarians should vote and standby to protect their votes. No rigging of any kind will be tolerated on the Anambra State governorship election. It must be transparent, free and fair to all.

“We wish to thank Biafrans, IPOB members worldwide, friends of Biafra and lovers of freedom for their continued support for our dogged struggle for independence,” IPOB said.

Last week, we took a look at the return of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, his quest to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari and the hurdles ahead of him.

In passing, we mentioned two other possible contestants for the position, in the persons of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Transportation Minster, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi.

We also mentioned that, among the possible contestants in the All Progressive Congress (APC), it appears it might be a two-horse race between the two contending factions in the party: the Bola Tinubu supporters and the tendencies that support Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi.

And oh, there is also the mafia around the presidential villa! But then, both Bola Tinubu and Rotimi Amaechi may decide or could be persuaded not to contest as the race unravels.

Nevertheless, for now, it is a given that each bloc will present contestants for the position and fight tooth and nail to enthrone their man/woman as the party’s candidate for the 2023 elections.

The projection for now, if the party zones the Presidency to the South, is that we may, for instance, see a Bola Tinubu contesting against a Rotimi Amaechi; or an empowered Vice President Yemi Osinbajo against a Rotimi Amaechi, or a contestant from that bloc.

Pundits agree, however, that it is still too early to concretely predict what the contest will eventually throw up. But that, however, has not precluded them from building possible scenarios.

One of such scenarios is that the Transportation Minister, who has been in the room of political power since 1999, will vie to be considered as the candidate of the APC for the 2023 presidential elections.

Recall that the young Rotimi Amaechi at about 33 years emerged the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, a position he held for eight years. On that platform, he became the Speakers’ Speaker as chairman of the group of Speakers of the 36 states. As a two-term governor of Rivers State, he also became the Chairman of the powerful Governors Forum.

In the past six years of the Buhari administration, which he helped midwife, twice as DG of the Buhari Campaign Organisation, he has held sway at the significant Transport Ministry.

His national political reach can, therefore, be said to be extensive, cultivated and well-grounded.

The younger elements in the North are said to be very comfortable with, and favourably disposed towards him; and indeed would love to have him succeed President Buhari.

Apart from the politicians of the Governor Ganduje tendency, who support Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s aspiration, it appears a huge number of the political elite, especially those who came together to ensure the enthronement of President Buhari in 2015, think Amaechi is the kind of young, vibrant leader the nation deserves at these trying times.

Also, for his role in helping Buhari defeat his fellow South South President, Goodluck Jonathan, they are willing to go the whole six miles with him.

His Northern support base is further cemented by the fact that the North can present a strong vice presidential candidate which would protect the interest of the Northern elite while assuaging the fears in the South about the vaunted Islamization agenda of some elements of the Buhari regime.

According to those who speak about drafting him into the race, Amaechi can also stand as a bridge to unite those who want an Igbo man to be the next President of Nigeria and those who think the South, by the unwritten principle of rotation of the Presidency between the North and South, should present the candidate to succeed President Buhari.

Amaechi is an Igbo man from Ikwerre in Rivers State – although when convenient, some Ikwerres claim they are not Igbos but “a distinct people of South South geopolitical zone”.

Standing against him, should he jump into the fray, might be politicians of core Igbo states and some elite who say Amaechi does not approximate their dream President of Igbo origin because, by Nigeria’s peculiar geographical bastardisation, he is from the South South and not any of the South Eastern states.

It will be interesting to see the stand of Ohaneze and IPOB in these arguments. They have always claimed the original geography of South East, predating the horrendous Civil War, as the home of the Igbos.

Particularly, the Ikwerres and Aniomas of Delta State have always been regarded by them as core Igbos. But then, this is Nigeria brand of politics. Observers are already betting that the closest the Igbos will get to the Presidency of Nigeria in 2023 is in an Amaechi vying. To this school of thought, he will be more acceptable to the North and to the rest of the country as a hybrid South East and South South candidate.

This group of Igbos, who might oppose him, are apparently not going to be the only obstacle. There are also some elements of the Ijaw ethnic group and some South South leaders who still begrudge him for standing with Buhari against President Goodluck Jonathan. And then, there is the trouble within the APC in Rivers state!

Observers are agreed, however, that Amaechi’s fight with Governor Wike is of no significance in him emerging as the candidate of the APC and even in a General Election. They forecast that there is no way Wike can stand in the way of Amaechi emerging in APC and succeed. They acknowledge he will try several tactics to throw spanners in the works in a bid to frustrate Amaechi’s emergence.

Nevertheless, Amaechi is believed to have a decent record as a Governor with many of his admirers pointing to some major infrastructure projects he built across the state, including the model schools and hospitals.

Some opine that Wike’s also bullish infrastructure drive is a positive effort to” match Amaechi”, according to the latter’s admirers. Even the unfinished projects like the tram lines, still resonate in the minds of some.

He is credited with efforts to establish rotation principle in Rivers State governance, without which, his native Ikwerre people would continue to dominate the politics of the state.

It is believed that despite seeming appearances his Ikwerre people, who are the dominant ethnic/linguistic group in Rivers State, are behind him and that when the chips are down they would queue behind their son. They predict that Amaechi will not be the Obasanjo of 2023, without a home base, as some speculate.

Of course, he has to find a way to douse the rancour among the South South leaders in Buhari’s government. There is currently no love lost between them.

From Godswill Akpabio, to the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege. From Chief Timipre Sylva, to Festus Keyamo; from Adams Oshiomhole, to Amaechi himself – there is seemingly an undeclared war of attrition fueled by a quest to be the only fish, or indeed the main fish, in the South South ocean branch of Nigerian politics.

This is something I had earlier called the “curse of the South South leadership” – everyone wants to be the leader and none wants to be a follower. Amaechi has to find a way to build a solid coalition which will propel his victory in the Niger Delta states. He already has a lot of allies in the mould of ex-Speakers, Governors, and so on.

And to another critical issue of Nigerian politics! Many are worried that he may not have the financial engine room to canvass for the position. As many suspect, and as Amaechi himself claims, he is relatively a “poor man” when compared to some of the people who may be interested in the same position.

We hear he has only one house to his name and a poultry farm in Rivers State as his only known investment. So, many wonder how he will be able to finance the primaries, running against financial power houses like Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in the race.

As he has often postulated in the media space, he “does not like money!” But like money or not, he needs a lot of it to be able to make any impact on the campaign trail should he venture into it. Which perhaps explains his alleged reluctance.

Most observers, however, are of the view that it is just a matter of time before Rotimi Amaechi throws his hat into the ring.

The same groups who want him, it is claimed, are already dropping subtle words in his favour around Aso Rock. They are said to be, however, waiting patiently for the man they want and are ready to campaign for, at a convenient time, which they hope is soon, to signify his interest in vying for the office.

This, however, has not stopped political jobbers from springing up from every corner of the country. The drums are starting to beat loudly across the nation but will, or should, Rotimi Amaechi enter the presidential arena to test his strength and luck?

  • Igbo lawyers apply to join Northern elders’ suit seeking exit of South-East from Nigeria

Igbo lawyers apply to join Northern elders’ suit seeking exit of South-East from Nigeria

Association of Igbo lawyers has approached the Federal High Court in Abuja with an application to be joined as a party in a suit some Northern elders filed for exit of the South East region from Nigeria.

The legal practitioners led by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria SAN, Chief Chuks Muoma, Ukpai Ukairo, Ebere Uzoatu and Hon Obi Emuka are asking for order of the court to allow them join in the suit as representatives of the people of the south-east.

In their application for joinder filed by Victor Onweremadu in Abuja, the applicants claimed that the case of the northern elders seeking the exit of south east from Nigeria has the capability to shape the life of generations of Igbo people.

The motion on notice for the joinder request was brought pursuant to order 9 rule 5 and order 26 rule 2 of the federal high court civil procedure rule 2019.

The northern elders had in June this year filed the contentious suit asking the court to compel the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives to hasten the exit of the South-eastern region out of Nigeria before concluding on-going amendment to the country’s Constitution.

The request for court order to compel hastening of south-east exit from Nigeria was one of the three prayers sought in a suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/538/2021 instituted by a group of elders and politicians from North led by Nastura Ashir Shariff, Balarabe Rufa’I, Abdul-Aziz Sulaiman and Aminu Adam.

In their suit, they averred in a supporting affidavit that their action was informed by the need to stem the tide of violence and destruction, occasioned by the agitation for secession championed by the Nnamdi Kanu-led IPOB.

Plaintiffs claimed that they do not want a repeat of the 1967 to 1970 civil war in Nigeria that cost the nation many innocent lives and properties worth billions of Naira.

Listed as defendants in the suit are the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), the Senate President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the National Asembly.

However, although the Igbos are not joined in the suit, the Igbo Lawyers claimed that they have interest to protect in the suit, hence, their request to be made a set of defendants in the case.

In the 12-paragraph affidavit in support of their application, the lawyers noted that the northern elders in their suit did not think it necessary to join the people of south-east or their representatives to enable the court hear from them.

The affidavit deposed to by one Ekenna Felix Jonathan read in part “That this suit is so crucial and a sensitive matter which concerns the Indigenous Igbo speaking tribe in Nigeria and has the capability to shape the life of the future generation of the people of the south east of Nigeria and other Indigenous Igbo speaking tribe in Nigeria.

“That the Igbo Lawyers Association represented by the applicants are an Indigenous association of lawyers from the south east of Nigeria and other Indigenous Igbo speaking tribe in Nigeria.

“That the Igbo Lawyers Association and its objective is to represent the interest of the Igbo people which said people are Indigenous in the south east of Nigeria. Thus, the association is interested and is a necessary party to be joined.

“That It will serve the interest of justice if the Honourable court grants the application and join the applicants as defendants in the suit and that the plaintiffs will not be prejudiced if the application is granted”.

Meanwhile, Justice Inyang Eden Ekwo has fixed November 1 for hearing of the suit.

In the main suit, the northern elders prayed the court for the following reliefs:

*A declaration that, by the combined effect of the provisions of Section 4 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), and Articles 1, 2, and 20(1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act 2004, the 4th defendant (the National Assembly) is empowered to set in motion a framework for a referendum to allow the South-eastern region of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to decide on their bid for self-determination.

*An order directing the 2nd, 3rd and 4th defendants to provide a framework that will pave way for the self-determination of the South-eastern states so as to leave the geographical entity called Nigeria before any further step is taken to further amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria can be further amended at any time after the question of self-determination must have been resolved by Nigerians.”
