Southampton knock Arsenal out of FA Cup, Arteta reacts

English FA Cup holders Arsenal exited the 2020/2021 competition on Saturday after a 1-0 fourth-round defeat at Southampton.

Brazilian defender Gabriel conceded an own goal in the 24th minute after a shot from Southampton defender Kyle Walker-Peters deflected into the net from his boot.

Southampton have now advanced to the fifth round, where they will travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers who on Friday knocked out sixth-tier side Chorley 1-0.

Speaking after the game Arsenal Manager Arteta said he has no complaints but disappointed that the dream to retain the FA Cup came to an end today.

He said: “No. I’m disappointed because we wanted to continue in the competition. We had a dream to do it again – like we did it last year – step-by-step, but that dream today is over.”

Arteta also stated that he was disappointed with the way his team conceded.

He said: “We know we shouldn’t be doing that and giving the lead to the opponent. At the same time, I cannot fault the effort of the players, how they tried, how they improved throughout the game, and tried to go for the goal in the second half with the way we did it. But it wasn’t enough and we conceded a goal that we shouldn’t. We created the chances but we didn’t hit the target.

Leicester go second in EPL after beating Southampton

Leicester City beat Southampton 2-0 on Saturday to go second in the ongoing 2020/2021 English Premier League (EPL).

James Maddison and Harvey Barnes scored the goals to lift Leicester City to within one point of Manchester United, who play at third-placed Liverpool on Sunday.

Brighton and West Brom both picked up vital wins in their fight for survival Saturday while Chelsea and West Ham moved up the table with wins in the day’s other matches.

Maddison fired Leicester City ahead eight minutes before half-time and Barnes added a second deep into time added on to put Brendan Rodgers’ side above champions Liverpool.

Liverpool can regain the top spot, though, if they beat leaders Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.

Fulham’s hopes of getting anything from their west London derby at home to Chelsea ended when Antonee Robinson was sent off for a nasty challenge on Cesar Azpilicueta.

Mount scored the only goal 12 minutes from the end to secure Chelsea a 1-0 win, lifting them to seventh, but only seven points behind the leaders.

Premier League leader Liverpool suffers shock defeat

Liverpool’s Premier League title defence suffered a setback as they fell to their second loss of the season at Southampton.

Danny Ings’ superb second-minute lob over Reds goalkeeper Alisson, from a James Ward-Prowse free-kick, settled the contest against his former club.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side remain top of the table on goal difference but have taken only two points from the past nine available.

Both Manchester United and Manchester City will leapfrog the reigning champions if they win their games in hand.

Southampton’s first win in five Premier League games sees them rise to sixth.

  • Arsenal boss Arteta proud of Southampton draw

Arsenal boss Arteta proud of Southampton draw

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was proud of his players despite only managing a 1-1 draw against Southampton.

The Gunners were listless in the first half and were 0-1 down at the break.

They equalised through Pierre-Emerick Aubaymeyang, but then defender Gabriel got a red card after two yellows.

It meant they had to hold on at the end to maintain the result.

“Considering that we played again with 10 men for 35 minutes, after playing another 40/45 minutes three days before [with 10 men], you have to take the point,” Arteta told reporters.

“We needed a win. We play to win, we’re really disappointed with the way that we conceded the first goal but then the team reacted. Instead of getting down, the team reacted, we kept trying with more efficiency.

“We created some really good situations in the first half but we didn’t finish the action well enough. We came back really strong in the second half, we scored a really good goal and we kept going. When we had a [good] moment again, we shot ourselves in the foot and made things really complicated for ourselves.

“[At half time I told them] there is no time to feel sorry for ourselves. It is what it is. We have to stand up. We have to play with courage. We have to win the game and to do that we have to be brave and the players did that straight away.”

EPL: Southampton end Everton’s unbeaten record

The last remaining unbeaten record of the Premier League season was ended as leaders Everton crashed to defeat against an impressive Southampton at St Mary’s.

James Ward-Prowse beat Jordan Pickford with a ferocious finish before Che Adams doubled the lead with the help of a deflection, Danny Ings involved in both goals.

Stand-in skipper Gylfi Sigurdsson struck the bar from 20 yards when the game was goalless, but the visitors struggled to seriously test keeper Alex McCarthy and finished the game with 10 men.

Full-back Lucas Digne was shown a straight red card after a nasty challenge on Kyle Walker-Peters, the second successive game in which Everton have had a player sent off after Richarlison’s dismissal in last week’s Merseyside derby.

EPL: Southampton earn late point at Chelsea

Jannik Vestergaard headed in a dramatic injury-time equaliser as Southampton pegged back Chelsea to claim a point in a Premier League thriller at Stamford Bridge.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side looked to be heading for defeat but Danish defender Vestergaard was in the right place to flick home a Theo Walcott shot from the edge of the area.

Chelsea were in control at 2-0 up through two superb Timo Werner goals – the first courtesy of a sublime dummy which bamboozled Jan Bednarek before drilling in, and the second as he lobbed the ball over goalkeeper Alex McCarthy and nodded home.

When it looked like the hosts were cruising, Southampton hit back as Danny Ings went round keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to finish and Che Adams punished dire Chelsea defending to smash home an equaliser.

The Blues responded just 121 seconds later with Werner sliding the ball across the box for compatriot Kai Havertz to convert an easy finish which seemed to be the winner, but Vestergaard’s late effort sealed a draw.

FA Cup: Mourinho admits Tottenham lucky to edge out Southampton

Jose Mourinho admitted Tottenham got lucky after Son Heung-min’s late penalty secured a dramatic 3-2 win against Southampton in Wednesday’s FA Cup fourth-round replay.

Mourinho’s side were 12 miMourinho’s side were 12 minutes away from being knocked out after squandering the first-half lead given to them by Jack Stephens’ own goal.

Shane Long and Danny Ings scored as Southampton hit back to take the lead at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

But Lucas Moura equalised before Son won and converted the decisive penalty with just two minutes left.

“I have to be honest and say I think the best team lost on the pitch but my team were the ones with more heart and went to their limit,” Mourinho said.

“We suffered but we deserved to win because we were in our limits. Southampton were fresher than us but we played with our souls and heart and gave absolutely everything.”

Tottenham, who last won the FA Cup in 1991, will host struggling Norwich in the fifth round in the first week of March.

Aiming for the first trophy of his reign, Mourinho, who replaced Mauricio Pochettino earlier this season, will be relieved Tottenham avoided a surprise exit from a competition he has not won since 2007 with Chelsea.

Taking credit for the win in classic Mourinho self-promoting style, he said: “I think I did very well because I had to manage a team with so many difficulties.

“The priority is to survive. We have lots of difficulties. I’m not speaking just about Harry Kane, I’m speaking about injuries to Giovani lo Celso and Erik Lamela.

“Today was a team completely unbalanced, really hard to organise it.”

Tottenham are without a major trophy of any kind since the 2008 League Cup and Mourinho would dearly love to end that drought, but his team will have to improve significantly on this erratic display.

Mourinho will also have to get Jan Vertonghen back onside after the defender’s dejected trudge off the pitch following his substitution.

“I understand his sadness, it is normal. He is always respectful and always professional. It doesn’t make me happy to make a substitution. I did it for the team, Jan is happy for the team,” Mourinho said.

Tottenham had won eight of their last nine home games against Southampton, including a 2-1 success in the Premier League earlier this season, and they were in front after 12 minutes.

Unstoppable Liverpool put four goals past Southampton

Liverpool have demolished Southampton 4-0 at Anfield to remain unbeaten in 25 games and opened 22 points lead at the top.

With the incredible result, Liverpool have equalled Manchester City’s record of 20 consecutive wins at home in the Premier League.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored the opener just after half time – his second goal in as many league matches – when he drilled the ball low into the bottom corner.

Reds’ skipper Jordan Henderson made it 2-0 on the hour mark with a calm finish after being set up by Roberto Firmino.

Henderson then played in Mohamed Salah for Liverpool’s third and the Egypt forward added a fourth from close range in the last minute.

Danny Ings went close for the visitors in the first half while Shane Long was also denied by Liverpool keeper Alisson.

BBC reports that the victory extends Liverpool’s unbeaten run in the league to 42 games and they sit 22 points clear at the top of the table, with second-placed Manchester City not playing until Sunday.

It was Southampton’s first away defeat in five games and they fall to 11th place.

The statement read: “Welcome to Arsenal, Cedric Soares.

“Portuguese defender Cedric Soares is to join us on loan until the end of the season.

“The 28-year-old moves to north London from Southampton, where he has made more than 100 appearances since joining the south coast club in 2015.

“Cedric started his career at Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon, developing through the youth ranks before making his first-team debut in the Portuguese Primeira League at the age of 19.”

Technical Director, Edu added: “Cedric is a defender with good experience of the Premier League, and of course at international level. He is another strong addition to our defensive unit who will provide our squad with quality.

EPL: Mourinho sees defeat on New Year day

A brilliant goal from Danny Ings gave Southampton a narrow but deserved win over Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham.

The Saints striker flicked the ball superbly over Toby Alderweireld before shooting past Paulo Gazzaniga for his ninth goal in his past 10 games.

Spurs were unimpressive, with Jan Vertonghen missing their best chance from close range in the first half.

Mourinho, who was booked late on, sees his team stay sixth in the table, while Southampton rise to 12th.

Spurs striker Harry Kane was forced off with a leg injury just seconds after having a goal disallowed for offside in the second half.

Shane Long went close with a header with five minutes left, but Southampton are now unbeaten in their last four outings.
