  • Lampard under pressure after home defeat to Saints

Chelsea lost consecutive home league games for the first time since 2011 as Southampton earned a key 2-0 win in their fight against relegation at Stamford Bridge.

The home side never got going during the opening 45 minutes and Michael Obafemi’s superbly taken strike from 18 yards gave Saints a deserved lead.

The introduction of Mason Mount for defender Kurt Zouma at the break threatened to inject energy into Frank Lampard’s side but only a vital Fikayo Tomori intervention prevented the away side a second.

And with 20 minutes remaining, a superb team move saw the ball break for Nathan Redmond and his simple finish from 10 yards wrapped up six points for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side from festive away games at Aston Villa and the Blues.

EPL: Bournemouth win at Southampton for first time

Bournemouth survived a second-half fightback to secure a first ever victory at Southampton and move into third place in the Premier League before the weekend’s games.

Eddie Howe’s side produced a superb first-half display to establish a two-goal lead as Nathan Ake headed in Diego Rico’s corner in the 10th minute and Harry Wilson’s sweeping finish from Phillip Billing’s pass crowned a superb move.

The Cherries also had a goal from Joshua King ruled out for offside by the video assistant referee as they were in complete control for the first 45 minutes.

Southampton snatched at a lifeline when James Ward-Prowse scored from the spot eight minutes after the break following Steve Cook’s clumsy challenge on Che Adams.

Bournemouth felt they had a credible penalty claim ignored by VAR when Cedric Soares tangled with King but they came through in relative comfort and wrapped up the win with virtually the last kick of the game when a misunderstanding between Southampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn and Jan Bednarek left Callum Wilson with an open goal.

  • Southampton sign striker Adams from Birmingham

Southampton have signed forward Che Adams from Birmingham City on a five-year deal, the Premier League club said on Monday.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed but British media reported Southampton paid Birmingham 15 million pounds ($18.95 million) for the 22-year-old forward, who was short-listed for the Championship player of the year last season.
Adams registered 22 goals and six assists in 48 appearances for Birmingham last season.
“Che fits the profile of player we want to bring to Southampton and is very driven to show what he can do at the highest level,” Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl told the club’s website here
“We have been monitoring his progress for some time now. He has shown a desire to join us above all other clubs, which shows the positive reputation Southampton has built for developing young players.”
Adams is Southampton’s second major signing ahead of the 2019-20 season, following the arrival of Malian winger Moussa Djenepo.
“They are both young, dynamic players with the level of enthusiasm and hunger we are looking for that can help us improve as a team,” Hasenhuttl said.

  • EPL: Southampton stun Tottenham with comeback win

EPL: Southampton stun Tottenham with comeback win

Two late goals in five minutes earned Southampton an incredible victory against Tottenham to remain clear of the Premier League bottom three.

James Ward-Prowse earned the win with a sensational free-kick from 25 yards to keep the Saints two points ahead of Cardiff, who won at home to West Ham.

The midfielder’s strike came after calamitous defending allowed Southampton to draw level via Yan Valery, who pounced on Danny Rose’s mistake.

Victory seemed unlikely after a poor first half dominated by Spurs who took the lead when Harry Kane scored his 200th career goal.

But the incredible turnaround earned Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team a second consecutive home win – the first time Southampton have achieved that since December 2016.

Tottenham, whose manager Mauricio Pochettino was in the stands as part of his two-match touchline ban, remain third after losing a third league game in four.

Manchester United, who were 13 points behind Spurs when Jose Mourinho was sacked as manager on 16 December, can move level on points with Spurs should they beat Arsenal on Sunday.

  • EPL: Sarri wants a new striker after draw with Southampton

EPL: Sarri wants a new striker after draw with Southampton

Chelsea head coach Maurizio Sarri hinted at the need for a new striker after his side failed to break down a resolute Southampton team at Stamford Bridge.

The hosts had 72% of possession but could not find their way through a well-organised and disciplined Saints side as it ended goalless.

“I think we played a very good match for 80 metres of the pitch, then we were in trouble in the last 20 metres,” said Sarri, who has Alvaro Morata as his only recognised striker with Olivier Giroud out with an ankle injury.

“We have to try to solve the problem of the last 15, 20 metres. The club knows very well my opinion. I think we need something different for characteristics.

“I’m not in charge of the market. I have to try to improve my players, my team, my offensive phase, or better my offensive phase in the last 20 metres.

“The club knows my position, my opinion. It’s up to the board.”

Man City defeat Southampton to reduce Liverpool’s lead

Manchester City survived a brief scare to beat Southampton and shorten the gap on league leaders Liverpool to seven points.

Southampton responded to David Silva’s early opener when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg took the ball off Oleksandr Zinchenko and fired it into the top corner.

City had luck on their side when Raheem Sterling’s shot deflected off James Ward-Prowse to make it 2-1.

Sergio Aguero’s back-post header completed the scoring before half-time.

Southampton goalscorer Hojbjerg – who had only just returned from suspension – was shown a straight red card for a lunging tackle on Fernandinho with just over five minutes to go.

City had a number of decent chances as Silva, Aguero and Riyad Mahrez all went close in the first half and Aguero smacked the crossbar after the break.

Southampton threatened too and Charlie Austin was twice denied by City keeper Ederson in the first half before Hojbjerg’s equaliser.

But the Saints were ultimately undone by Pep Guardiola’s free-flowing side, who move up to second place in the table.

  • Anderson double earns West Ham victory over Southampton

Anderson double earns West Ham victory over Southampton

Felipe Anderson’s double helped West Ham come from behind to beat Southampton 2-1 at St Mary’s and move into the top half of the Premier League.

After a quiet first half, the hosts took the lead in scrappy fashion through Nathan Redmond after Lukasz Fabianski had parried his initial effort.

But West Ham were only behind for three minutes before Anderson’s 20-yard low strike beat Alex McCarthy.

The third goal – all in nine minutes – came again from Anderson, who powerfully shot home after being released by Michail Antonio to put the Hammers ahead.

Southampton pushed for an equaliser, but Fabianski and the visiting defence held firm to secure West Ham their fifth win in six games.

  • Southampton beat Huddersfield as Hasenhuttl earns second straight win

Southampton beat Huddersfield as Hasenhuttl earns second straight win

Southampton won for the second consecutive week to keep Huddersfield Town in the relegation zone after a fifth straight defeat.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side were 2-0 up at the break thanks to Nathan Redmond’s cool strike and a Danny Ings penalty.

The hosts improved after the break and halved the deficit through Philip Billing’s swerving, long-range effort.

But 18-year-old substitute Michael Obafemi’s first Premier League goal sealed the win for the Saints.

On the back of Southampton’s first back-to-back wins since April 2017, the south coast side move one place up the table into 16th place.

Huddersfield, with just four goals scored at home so far this season, remain in 19th place and are without injured top scorer Aaron Mooy until February.

EPL: Southampton end Arsenal’s 22-match unbeaten run

Charlie Austin’s 85th-minute header clinched victory for Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl on his home debut and ended Arsenal’s 22-match unbeaten run.

In a see-sawing encounter, the hosts took the lead after 20 minutes as Danny Ings muscled home a header from Matt Targett’s cross.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan nodded in shortly after for Arsenal, following good work by Alex Iwobi and Nacho Monreal – but Ings struck again just before the break.

Nathan Redmond’s floated cross was precise and Ings cushioned a looping effort into the far corner.

Arsenal turned the screw in the second half and restored parity as Mkhitaryan’s shot deflected in off Jannik Vestergaard.

The Gunners had their chances with Alex McCarthy impressing in the home goal, but Southampton were dangerous on the break and Shane Long had a goal rightly ruled offside before providing a teasing cross for Austin’s winner.

The victory takes Southampton out of the relegation zone and up to 17th.

  • Southampton lose at Cardiff in first game under Hasenhuttl

Southampton lose at Cardiff in first game under Hasenhuttl

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s first game in charge of Southampton ended in defeat after Callum Paterson’s goal gave Cardiff City a precious victory over their Premier League relegation rivals.

Cardiff squandered several chances during a frenetic first half in which a vulnerable visiting defence looked there for the taking.

Southampton appeared to have weathered that storm after the break but, as the rain came driving down at a raucous Cardiff City Stadium, they fell behind in shambolic fashion.

A pass from Victor Camarasa ran harmlessly to Jannik Vestergaard but the Saints centre-back inexplicably dithered on the ball and was dispossessed by Paterson, whose low finish dribbled slowly into the corner.

That gave Cardiff a fourth win from five home matches, lifting them up to 14th place in the Premier League, four points clear of the bottom three.

For Southampton, meanwhile, a 12th league game without victory leaves them second from bottom of the table, three points adrift of safety.
