  • FRCN never denied Sowore airtime on Radio Nigeria – Official

The Management of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) has said that it never denied the African Action Congress (ACC), Presidential Candidate, Mr Omoyele Sowore, airtime on Radio Nigeria on Oct. 18.
A statement signed by Osana Omame, Head Corporate Development and Communications, FRCN, in Abuja on Saturday, said the management of FRCN was not aware that Sowore approached Radio Nigeria for an interview.
“Our attention has been drawn to an allegation on social media that a presidential candidate in the forthcoming general election was denied airtime on Radio Nigeria by the Federal Government.
“The management of FRCN was not aware that Mr Sowore approached Radio Nigeria for any interview.
“However, on inquiry, we discovered that Mr Sowore, through his aide had attempted to access our airtime through one of our reporters.
“When the reporter approached the relevant authorities, she was instructed to ask the candidate to come for pre-recording of the interview on a date to be scheduled.
“At no time did anybody in Radio Nigeria arrange with Mr Sowore or his aides to come for an interview by 4p.m on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018, besides, 4p.m is the time for our news bulletin, a 30 minute programme.’’
Omame said that the news directorate of Radio Nigeria does not have any one hour personality interview programme, therefore, no reporter in the organisation could have arranged for a one hour interview with anybody.
Omame also noted that campaigns for 2019 presidential election would commence on Nov. 18 and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had warned against untimely campaigns.
According to Omame, consequently, any interview conducted with any candidate now could only be recorded and used at the appropriate time.
“Let me place on record that the Federal Government does not interfere in the day to day operations of the FRCN.
“It is therefore preposterous and baseless for anyone to claim that President Muhammadu Buhari or any official of the government barred his arranged interview with Radio Nigeria.
“We in Radio Nigeria, are always committed to our motto, which is ‘’Uplifting the People and Uniting the Nation.’’
Omame said had Sawore tweeted: FLASH: Bigwigs at Radio Nigeria (FRCN)@frcnnews@radionigeria today cancelled my 4p.m interview at the Radio station in Abuja after they belatedly found out I was the one and that standing “orders from above” forbids me on live radio. We will #takeitback through #sowore2019”

  • 2019: Moghalu, Sowore denounce Fela Durotoye as consensus candidate

Presidential hopefuls, former Central Bank deputy governor Kingsley Moghalu and the Publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore have both rejected Fela Durotoye, as ‘their’ consensus candidate ahead of the 2019 presidential election.

Despite Fela Durotoye emerging as the consensus candidate of Presidential Aspirants Coming Together (PACT), Moghalu has said that he is ‘pressing ahead’ with his plan to run for president in 2019.

The former United Nations official said the outcome of the consensus candidate of PACT has ‘left many Nigerians expressing surprise and disappointment.’

Young presidential aspirants including Moghalu came together to form a coalition to field a sole candidate for the Presidential election in 2019.

The candidate was elected after a two-staged voting process that saw Durotoye score 4 votes and Kingsley Moghalu, 3 Votes.

However, Moghalu has claimed dissatisfaction with the election process citing the withdrawal of candidates from the process as his reason for pulling out of the PACT.

“Only seven aspirants participated in the final voting out of the original 18 aspirants, mainly because many of the aspirants had withdrawn from the process.”

He further stated that PACT did not produce a truly consensus candidate because more candidates pulled out during the voting process.

“Four candidates who were present in the meeting this morning withdrew from the process even while the voting process was ongoing.”

The list of PACT aspirants include Moghalu, Durotoye, Yele Sowore, Dr Thomas-Wilson Ikubese, Ahmed Buhari, Tope Fasua, Sina Fagbenro-Byron, Eragbe Anslem, Jaye Gaskia, Mathias Tsado, Victor Ani-Laju, Alistair Soyode, Godstime Sidney Iroabuchi, Clement Jimbo, Elishama Ideh amongst others.

The lawyer referred to a clause in the PACT Memorandum of Understanding that gives him the constitutional right to pursue his political ambition.

The Young Progressive Party (YPP) presidential aspirant emphasised the need to unite Nigeria, wage war against poverty and unemployment, and the restoration of respect for Nigeria in the society of nations as his ideals.

Moghalu concluded that he will pursue his vision in ‘deference to the overwhelming outpouring of support’ for his candidacy from all over Nigeria.

Similarly, Omoyele Sowore in a video he shared on his official Facebook account denied involvement in the final exercise that led to the emergence of Fela DuroToye.

His words “I was never part of the pact, I never participated in their activities, so there was no way I could have accepted such. I never felt that PACT represented my aspiration. in fact one of them accused my people that we were too emotional.

“And I replied that, if you have been in bondage for fifty eight years and you don’t have an emotional problem, then you have a problem; because the oppression has lasted for too long. Their disposition in the movement gave me the feeling that PACT was not where I should be. Regardless, I appreciate their decision, it is beautiful in democracy that we have varieties, I was even worried at some point that we might be setting ourselves for failure if we put all our eggs in one basket; considering that people like us may be too radical for the movement to handle.

2019: Fela Durotoye beats Moghalu, Sowore to emerge PACT consensus candidate

Motivational speaker and businessman, Fela Durotoye, has emerged as the consensus candidate for the Presidential Aspirants Coming Together (PACT), ahead of the 2019 presidential election.

Durotoye emerged as the alternative candidate at the party’s meeting on Thursday, beating the likes of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Deputy Governor Kingsley Moghalu and Omoyele Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters.

Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, confirmed the development on her Twitter feed.

“Today, a group of Presidential Aspirants under the acronym of PACT- Presidential Aspirants Coming Together held a Voting among themselves to decide their Consensus Candidate.

“They invited me to be an observer. I observed their process and reported the outcome of their Votes.

“PACT – Presidential Aspirants Coming Together used a two-staged Voting process and ended with an outcome that had Fela Durotoye score 4 votes and Kingsley Moghalu, 3 Votes.

“I wish them well,” Ezekwesili wrote.

  • [Video] Buhari will be kicked out of Aso Rock come 2019 – Sowore

Media entrepreneur and a presidential aspirant of African Action Congress (AAC), Omoleye Sowore, says the President Muhammadu Buhari led government will be kicked out of office come 2019 presidential election.

Sowore said this while answering questions on his chances of winning the 2019 presidential election during a live Channels TV programme, Politics Today, on Wednesday night, August 22.

The Sahara Reporters publisher said the APC had not done much in the areas of security and improving the living condition of Nigerians.

Sowore said rather than solve the issues, which they (APC) attacked PDP for in 2015, the ruling party was relying on propaganda to win the 2019 elections.

The Presidential aspirant said the APC had failed in all its promises, noting that what the party was parading was false confidence.

His words: “The party (APC) is in disaster, their programmes have not been implemented, they came that they want to protect the country in the areas of security but the story, you know as it is unfolding in Benue today, the Fulani herdsmen, you just have more openings.

He added that President Buhari is not new to losing; he stressed that having lost elections three times before winning in 2015, it won’t be much surprise if he [Buhari] loses the 2019 election.

“This government is going down, there is no question about it, and they know they are going down.

“They have some kind of false confidence that they could get unto the public because they have impoverished the public that they think if they distribute N5,000 in the next general election, they will be able to convince people and win the election.

“But they will be shocked. This is not confidence, it is arrogance and it is going to lead to political suicide.”
He added that young and new presidential aspirants should also be given the audience and the opportunity to challenge older aspirants through debate.

“If want you to be more serious, you should be bringing these presidential candidates to debate us. Buhari should be brought out. The media should force them out of their hiding. Let them come and debate the future of Nigeria,” he said.

He argued that contrary to claims, young people have come up with alternatives to the current leaders.

“These alternatives will kick out the old guards in 2019,” Sowore declared.

He stressed that younger presidential aspirants are the viable alternative to President Buhari and are capable of doing much more in directing affairs of the nation if elected.

“The alternative is here, that is what we should be debating. We should be talking about the fresh ideas that we are bringing on the table.

“In Nigeria, when we have people like us who have capacity, character, and integrity. We’ve got stamina, intellect, history, and pedigree.

“Young people are here to take their country to the next level of prosperity. We want to say goodbye to poverty, incompetence and lackluster kind of leadership that we’ve had in Nigeria,” he said.

Sowore claimed that President Buhari is not willing to speak at a presidential debate because he “is hiding under one finger and by the time you take him out, it will be very obvious that they are no longer capable.”

  • 2019: Atiku, Moghalu, Sowore other presidential hopefuls challenge Buhari to debate

As the 2019 election year draws near, presidential aspirants have challenged incumbent, President Muhammadu Buhari to a public debate to come highlight his achievements since 2015 and why Nigerians should return him back to the highly coveted office.

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar; a former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Kingsley Moghalu; a former presidential candidate of the KOWA Party in the 2015 election, Prof. Remi Sonaiya; Publisher, Sahara Reporters, Mr. Omoyele Sowore; Prof. Iyorwuese Hagher; and Prof. Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies are among those who have indicated their interests to participate in a debate and are also challenging President Buhari to participate.

According to the presidential aspirants, if they emerge as their parties’ candidates for the next election, they will engage in any presidential debate they are invited for and would like President Buhari to make himself available for such debates should he also emerge as the candidate of his party, the All Progressives Congress.

Recall that Buhari had in 2015 shunned the last round of a presidential debate organised by the Nigeria Elections Debate Group, which was attended by the then President, Goodluck Jonathan (Peoples Democratic Party), Sonaiya (KOWA Party), Martins Onovo (National Conscience Party), Godson Okoye (United Democratic Party) and Chekwas Okorie (United Peoples Party).

But for the next election, Atiku said he would take part in any presidential debate if he emerged as the PDP candidate.

In a message on Twitter, he gave kudos to the Independent National Electoral Commission for recognising debates as a vital part of democratic process, saying “debates are a vital part of the democratic process.

Our democracy and governance will be better enriched when voters have the opportunity to make the needed distinction in the offerings of those who apply to govern them.”

When asked if he would be ready to face other presidential candidates in a debate, including Buhari, if he emerged as the APC candidate, his media aide, Mr. Paul Ibe, said, “His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar, will make himself available for a debate.”

Former Presidential candidate of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, also said it was important for those seeking to occupy the office of President to participate in a debate.

This, he said, would go a long way in assisting the public to make informed choices about those who want their votes.

Shekarau, who is also seeking to contest for the Presidency on the platform of the PDP, spoke through his Media Adviser, Mallam Sule Ya’u Sule, on Friday, saying he was “prepared to participate in a presidential debate anytime anywhere.”

He said, “It is like attending a job interview, which will provide the prospective employer with an opportunity to assess individual candidates; Nigerians deserve to be given the opportunity to hear directly from those who seek their mandate to occupy the highest office in the land.

If you will recall, His Excellency is not a stranger to debates as a trained teacher and public servant long before he became a politician. He has been involved in explaining and executing policies and plans on how to make this country better.”

Also, Moghalu, a presidential aspirant on the platform of the Young Progressive Party, on Friday, expressed his readiness to confront Buhari in a debate ahead of the 2019 elections.

“Yes, I am fully ready to face the President in a debate. Broadly, the areas that will be of interest to Nigerians are the economy, security, the fight against corruption, health, and education, among others,” Moghalu said in an interview with The Punch.

Moghalu, who expressed worry over the rising incidence of incessant killings and unemployment in the country, said his ambition to contest for the presidency in 2019 was borne out of the realisation that past leaders had failed.

Sonaiya, who has also expressed interest in contesting in the next presidential election, said if she emerged as her party’s candidate, she would “definitely participate in a debate,” adding that Buhari “should participate too as it is a duty; it is one of our duties to strengthen democracy.”

If you talk about strengthening democracy and so on, this is one way to do so and I think that even if there is no law that compels a candidate to participate in a debate, every candidate should see it as a responsibility.

It is one of the platforms to engage with the people. I participated in the debate the last time so there is no reason for me not to participate again,” she said.

According to Sowore, he cannot wait to debate with President Buhari on issues affecting Nigerians.

He said, “I can’t wait to debate with President Buhari, I think Nigerians are anxiously waiting for such an important moment in our political history. A popular debate will afford the President an opportunity to state to the Nigerian public where he thought he performed well and also present us an opportunity to lay before the Nigerian people our programmes of action to lift Nigeria to progress and prosperity.

I decided to run against the President because I came to the conclusion that he has failed in every ramification and ought not to be re-elected to office again for another four-year term.”

Hagher, who hopes to contest for the presidency on the platform of the Social Democratic Party, said he was “ever ready” to have a presidential debate with Buhari, adding that “even if it is now, I’m ready for him. I don’t want to wait, let him come out, he is a colossal failure.”

Another presidential aspirant on the platform of the PDP, Adesanya-Davies, also said that she was ready to face President Buhari in a presidential debate should both of them emerge as candidates of their parties.

Adesanya-Davies said she would like to take the President up on issues concerning the economy, education and security, especially why the Christian girl, Leah Shuaibu, had not been released by the Boko Haram sect.

She explained that though the President did not participate in the 2015 presidential debate, Buhari should be able to be part of the 2019 presidential debate to explain certain things to Nigerians.

Certainly yes; I am ready for a debate if I emerge as the candidate of my party; the PDP. I know that before the 2015 election, President Buhari did not go for any debate. He should not dodge the debate this time if he emerges the candidate of his party.

He (Buhari) should not only be talking to me; he should be talking to the entire Nigerians. We need him to explain why he should be the President and also the Minister of Petroleum. Why did he give a person like Babatunde Fashola multiple portfolios when one portfolio is already difficult to handle?

At such a debate, I will like to discuss the economy and education. We will like to talk about security; we have yet to find the Christian girl (still with the Boko Haram sect),” Adesanya-Davies said.

The presidential aspirant also queried the age and physical ability of the President, saying, “We will talk about the incumbent’s age and his health; why is he coming back again without considering his age and health?”

  • Buhari’s minister, Shittu and presidential hopeful, Sowore attack each other on radio [VIDEO]

Buhari’s minister, Shittu and presidential hopeful, Sowore attack each other on radio [VIDEO]

The minister of communication, Adebayo Shittu and Shara reporters founder, Omoyele Sowore heavily traded words on a Radio programme on Saturday.

During an interview on Fresh FM Ibadan, Shittu and Sowore went head to head over the publisher’s ambition to become President in 2019.

    TheNewsGuru.com monitored the programme and below is the exchange that took place;

Sowore started; “Minister, it is great to see you. This is the minister of an outgoing regime; the Buhari regime will be kicked off power by 2019,”

He had barely concluded his introductory statement when Mr. Shittu fired back saying that he is a dreamer.

Shittu fired; “By your wish or by God’s wish? You are just dreaming. You are a daydreamer” he said in response to Mr. Sowore’s claim to which the presidential hopeful replied saying, “By the wish of the people of Nigeria, Sir. It is not a dream. It is the realization you’d wake up to on February 15.”

“Sowore, what’s your electoral worth? Whether in your Ife (sic), home or any part of this country.” Mr. Sowore replied: “My electoral worth brought you to power in 2015. Nobody even heard about many of you in 2014.”

    “You are inconsequential…” he said.

Sowore said; “I am consequential because you came to power on my back, on our back… on the back of young people who invested a lot of hope.”

In response, the minister described the publisher as a mere noise-maker. “What did you invest? Did you invest more than me, No? I will not sit here and allow someone make noise…You are just a noisemaker. You are just a noisemaker.”

Sowore replied; “This was the same way Jonathan people were sounding in 2014… you are gonna be shocked in 2019,” Mr. Sowore said. On accusations by the minister that he was a dreamer and that his statements were politically motivated, he said: “The Nigeria of the future is for dreamers like me.”

Shittu shot back: “You think the presidency is for people like you? Go and start from being a councilor. I have been a member of the House of Assembly, I was a commissioner twice, I was already a lawyer… you wouldn’t know, you were too small. How old are you? How old are you? This is not a platform for minions like you to come… you think the presidency is something you can just buy in a marketplace? You are a giant in university politics (and) by the grace of God you will be put to shame.”

  • Sowore attacks Buhari for refusing to sign Continental Free Trade agreement

The Take Back Nigeria Movement has condemned the Nigerian government for failing to participate at the signing of Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement in Rwanda last week.

The political group, led by Sahara Reporters’ publisher Yele Sowore, said Nigeria missed out on a major opportunity to champion the cause of progress in Africa because of President Muhammadu Buhari’s “shambolic approach to governance.”

On March 21, African leaders gathered in Kigali, the Rwandan capital, to sign the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) to create a unified market for about 1.2 billion people across the continent.

Forty-four countries signed the deal, which has been described as the largest free trade agreement since the creation of the World Trade Organisation in 1995. It was aimed at boosting trade amongst African countries with a combined gross domestic product of $3.4 trillion by eliminating borders and tariffs on goods and services within the continent.

The deal was conceived in 2012 and negotiations formally opened in 2015. Mr. Buhari abruptly canceled a trip to Kigali, citing labour and legal issues. The countries signed the deal with the intention of continuing with negotiations on other critical details throughout the year.

Buhari had since raised an economic committee to iron out all objections that Nigeria may have against the deal with the hope of signing up later.

But Sowore, in a statement sent to TheNewsGuru.com Thursday morning, said this was not enough, saying Nigeria should have taken the leadership.

“Nigeria is Africa’s most populous nation and its largest economy and should have taken a key role in shaping the negotiations and the eventual agreement so that it would be beneficial to Nigeria’s economic and security interests.

“Instead of providing leadership, the Muhammadu Buhari government has exported its shambolic approach to governance at home to the continental stage. Just days after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved Nigeria’s participation in the agreement, the Buhari government announced it would no longer be participating because “some key stakeholders were not consulted.”

“It is unconscionable that it is at this late stage in the process that the Buhari government is realising that it ought to have engaged with Stakeholders,” Sowore said.

Recall that former President Olusegun Obasanjo had also last week joined other critics to lampoon Buhari and about a dozen other African heads of state for failing to sign the deal, describing their action as criminal.

Sowore said Take Back Nigeria Movement “believes that the economy of a nation as large as Nigeria, and decisions that impact the lives of almost 200 million people should not be taken lightly or on the whims of one man.”

The group promised to champion economic growth, protection of Nigerian economy, strong national security, amongst other developmental measures.

“Their voices will not be considered at the last minute, as has become the practice of the Buhari government,” it said.

  • Sahara Reporters’ publisher, Sowore released

*Lekan Fatodu tried to kill me – Sowore

The police in Lagos have released Omoyele Sowore, the publisher of Saharareporters, who was arrested earlier today based on a petition by a London-based journalist, Lekan Fatodu.

The online portal broke the news of the release of the crusading blogger on its Twitter handle moments ago:

Fatodu, in a petition to the police had accused Sowore of blackmail and threat to life.

He claimed Sowore had published a story about him accusing him of being involved in laundering money for politicians.

Meanwhile, Sowore in a new post on his Facebook, alleged that Lekan in company of one of his friends simply identified as Andre, tried to kill him when they waylaid him at GRA Ikeja yesterday. Read what he shared after the cut ..

“I am now safely out of the labyrinth of a police conspiracy centred around one Lekan Fatodu whom, in January 2016, we reported on SaharaReporters had been involved in laundering money for Femi Fani-Kayode. On Wednesday, Lekan and a friend of his referred to as “Ándre” waylaid me at GRA Ikeja and tried to kill me.

The attempt was resisted by the public, following which he showed up later with a police van from Area “F” police with a plain cloth police team. As it turned out, Commissioner of the Lagos State Police Command, Fatai Owoseni was part of the conspiracy, as he pulled out a petition alleging “criminal defamation” against me, got upset when I questioned his position and impartiality, and threatened to deal with me.

Even in the days of General Abacha, I did not experience that brazen partiality. My attack by Fatodu was organized with the police, but as they were unable to arrest me directly, he was given the cover to carry out an attack that would give the police their needed tonic to take vengeance on me.

The situation wasn’t better when I was hurled before Lagos CP, Mr. Owoseni and later, Frank Mba, who started a winding story claiming it was a messy case. I was asked to sign for my bail on Self Recognizance, but I declined, insisting I had not been arrested by the police and were that the case, that I preferred to be booked and shown an arrest warrant.

After a short argument, I was let go without signing a bail bond, but was asked to return to the Panti Police Station on Thursday at 2p.m. I wish to thank all Nigerians and others who have reached out to me over this saga. I am grateful to Peter Claver Oparah, Temitope Gomez and Inibehe Effiong who served last night as my lawyer, as well as the construction workers at Isaac John Street who came out to defend me from what could have been a fatal attack.

I will return to Panti on Thursday as requested, to confront the police over the case. Rest assured that I’ve always prepared for things of this nature this in the course of my self-appointed duties as a conscience of the public. If you have spare time tomorrow, meet me at the SCID at Panti at 2 pm. There is no retreat and no surrender.”

The spokesperson for Police, SP Dolapo Badmos said Sowore was arrested based on the allegations.

Badmos said Sowore was picked up in his home by policemen attached to Area ‘F’ command, Ikeja.

“The publisher was arrested this evening over threat to life and blackmail. Investigation is still going on”, she said

  • Breaking: [Defamation] Police arrest Sahara Reporters’ publisher, Sowore

Popular investigative journalist and publisher of Sahara Reporters’, Omoyele Sowore has been allegedly arrested by Lagos State Police Command.

Sowore’s arrest was disclosed in a tweet by one Lekan Fatodu; “I just got Sowore Omoyele of Saharareporters arrested for criminal defamation and blackmail and threat to my life and career.”

Sowore was reportedly arrested at his house in Lagos and moved to area F at Ikeja on Wednesday after Fatodu, who lodged the complaint to police, received tip about the his appearance in the state and reported to nearby police station for his immediate arrest.

Confirming the news report surrounding his arrest, Sowore wrote on his official Twitter account…
