  • Telecoms adds N2.5 trillion to Nigeria’s GDP as NCC issues licence to Elon Musk’s SpaceX

Telecoms adds N2.5 trillion to Nigeria’s GDP as NCC issues licence to Elon Musk’s SpaceX

Telecommunications and ICT services contributed N2.508 trillion to Nigeria’s GDP in the first quarter of 2023, the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) stated on Thursday.

NCC quoted figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in a statement issued by its Director, Public Affairs, Mr Reuben Muoka.

“Telecoms contribution to GDP was calculated from 46 distinct sectors of the economy, which constitute telecoms and information services baskets.

“The Nigerian telecoms industry has continued to show a positive outlook, which is credited to the innovative and predictable telecoms regulatory environment implemented by the NCC.

“One of the key highlights of the telecoms industry performance within the period was the generation of 820.8 million dollars for the Federal Government from 5G spectrum licences fees.

“The fees were paid by three operators, MTN, MAFAB and Airtel,’’ Muoka stated.

He added that following the issuance of the licences in December 2021, MTN and MAFAB already launched 5G services, while Airtel, which received its licence in December 2022, is set to launch the service in June.

The NCC spokesman stated also that another major development in the sector was the launch of Starlinks broadband services, a satellite-based wireless broadband service with potential nationwide coverage.

He added that this followed the issuance of licence to Elon Musk-owned SpaceX by the NCC, noting that the services were now available in different parts of the country.

Muoka stressed that the growth statistics of the telecoms industry were showing impressive record of contributions to the Nigerian economy.

He stated that the number of phone subscribers in Nigeria as at April 2023 stood at 223.6 million.

Number of Internet subscribers for the same period was 157 million, while broadband subscriptions stood at 92 million, Muoka added.

  • Elon Musk Shakes Up Twitter: Linda Yaccarino Takes Charge as New CEO

Elon Musk Shakes Up Twitter: Linda Yaccarino Takes Charge as New CEO

In a surprising move, Elon Musk announced on Friday that he has appointed Linda Yaccarino as the new CEO of Twitter.

Yaccarino, who was most recently the Chairman of Advertising Sales and Client Partnerships at NBCUniversal, will take over from Jack Dorsey, who stepped down from the role earlier this year.

Musk, who is known for his interest in social media and has a massive following on Twitter, tweeted the news on Friday, saying, “Just want to say that Linda Yaccarino is going to do a great job as CEO of Twitter. She’s smart, tough, and has the experience to take the company to the next level.”

Yaccarino, who has worked at NBCUniversal for over 30 years, is widely respected in the media industry for her leadership and strategic thinking. Under her leadership, NBCUniversal became the first media company to sell more than $1 billion in digital advertising in a single year.

In a statement, Yaccarino said she was excited to take on the new role and to work with Musk to drive growth and innovation at Twitter. “Twitter is one of the most influential and important social media platforms in the world, and I am honored to have been chosen to lead it at this critical time,” she said.

The appointment of Yaccarino comes as Twitter faces growing competition from other social media platforms, including Facebook and TikTok. The company has also been under pressure to address issues such as misinformation and harassment on its platform.

Musk, who has been a vocal critic of Twitter in the past, has also been a frequent user of the platform, often using it to announce new products and make controversial statements.

Some industry analysts have raised concerns about the appointment of Yaccarino, noting that she has little experience in the technology industry. However, others have praised Musk for choosing someone with a strong track record in media and advertising.

It remains to be seen what changes Yaccarino will make at Twitter and how she will work with Musk to shape the company’s future. But one thing is clear: with these two powerful and influential figures at the helm, Twitter is sure to be in the spotlight in the coming months.

Neuralink: Elon Musk’s company develops brain chip meant to restore vision to persons born blind

The CEO and chief engineer of SpaceX, Elon Musk, whose company developed brain chip interfaces (Neuralink) that would restore vision to persons born blind and enable disabled patients to move and communicate again, has sought U.S. regulatory approval to begin clinical trials in people.

Musk said on Wednesday that the brain chip interface is one of its first targeted applications in restoring vision.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Neuralink has in recent years been conducting tests on animals.

“The first two human applications targeted by the Neuralink device will be in restoring vision and enabling movement of muscles in people who cannot do so. Even if someone has never had vision, ever, like they were born blind, we believe we can still restore vision,” Musk said.

It was gathered that The event was originally planned for October 31 but Musk postponed it just days before, without giving a reason.

“We want to be extremely careful and certain that it will work well before putting a device into a human but we’ve submitted I think most of our paperwork to the FDA and we think probably in about six months we should be able to have our first Neuralink in a human,” Musk said during a much-awaited public update on the device.

Neuralink: Elon Musk's company develops brain chip meant to restore vision to persons born blind

Neuralink’s last public presentation, more than a year ago, involved a monkey with a brain chip that played a computer game by thinking alone.

Musk, who also runs electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla , rocket firm SpaceX, and social media platform Twitter, is known for lofty goals such as colonising Mars and saving humanity. His ambitions for Neuralink, which he launched in 2016, are of the same grand scale.

He wants to develop a chip that would allow the brain to control complex electronic devices and eventually allow people with paralysis to regain motor function and treat brain diseases such as Parkinson’s, dementia and Alzheimer’s. He also noted his intention of melding the brain with artificial intelligence.

Neuralink, however, is running behind schedule. Musk said in a 2019 presentation he was aiming to receive regulatory approval by the end of 2020. He then said at a conference in late 2021 that he hoped to start human trials this year.

Neuralink has repeatedly missed internal deadlines to gain FDA approval to start human trials, current and former employees have said. Musk approached competitor Synchron earlier this year about a potential investment after he expressed frustration to Neuralink employees about their slow progress, Reuters reported in August.

Synchron crossed a major milestone in July by implanting its device in a patient in the United States for the first time. It received U.S. regulatory clearance for human trials in 2021 and has completed studies in four people in Australia.

SpaceX signs deal with Google for global high-speed Internet connectivity

Elon Musk’s SpaceX on Thursday signed a deal with Internet giant, Google to provide high-speed broadband internet connectivity around the world.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the deal is to deliver data, cloud services, and applications, leveraging Starlink’s ability to provide high-speed broadband internet.

Under the deal, SpaceX will locate Starlink ground stations within Google data center properties, providing businesses with seamless, secure access to the cloud and Internet with Google Cloud infrastructure

This will enable secure, low-latency, and reliable delivery of data from more than 1,500 Starlink satellites launched to orbit to-date to locations at the network edge via Google Cloud.

Google Cloud’s high-capacity private network will support the delivery of Starlink’s global satellite internet service, bringing businesses and consumers seamless connectivity to the cloud and Internet, and enabling the delivery of critical enterprise applications to virtually any location.

Organizations with broad footprints, like public sector agencies, businesses with presences at the network edge, or those operating in rural or remote areas, often require access to applications running in the cloud, or to cloud services like analytics, artificial intelligence, or machine learning.

Connectivity from Starlink’s constellation of low-Earth-orbit satellites provides a path for these organizations to deliver data and applications to teams distributed across countries and continents, quickly and securely.

“Applications and services running in the cloud can be transformative for organizations, whether they’re operating in a highly networked or remote environment,” said Urs Hölzle, Senior Vice President, Infrastructure at Google Cloud.

“We are delighted to partner with SpaceX to ensure that organizations with distributed footprints have seamless, secure, and fast access to the critical applications and services they need to keep their teams up and running.”

“Combining Starlink’s high-speed, low-latency broadband with Google’s infrastructure and capabilities provides global organizations with the secure and fast connection that modern organizations expect,” said SpaceX President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell.

“We are proud to work with Google to deliver this access to businesses, public sector organizations, and many other groups operating around the world.”

This new capability, delivered by Google Cloud and Starlink to enterprise customers, is expected to be available in the second half of 2021.

Recall that the American aerospace manufacturer and space transportations services company had identified Nigeria as a critical market for its business.

A delegation from the company was in the country recently, and held a meeting with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

SpaceX is in the process of launching a low-earth orbiting (LOE) constellation of satellites to provide low latency, high bandwidths Internet to all corners of the globe and has identified Nigeria as a critical market.

SpaceX has been in discussion with NCC virtually over the past several months to begin the process of pursuing all necessary licenses to bring Starlink, its satellite-based broadband services to Nigeria.

Having made substantial progress in the discussion, the Commission granted SpaceX’s request for a face-to-face discussion to gain better insights on the prospects of their proposal.

Led by SpaceX’s Starlink Market Access Director for Africa, Ryan Goodnight and supported by the company’s consultant, Levin Born, the company provided an overview of its plans, expectations, licensing requests and deployment phases during the meeting.

After the presentation by the SpaceX team, the NCC emphasised that in light of disruption in the technology world, it is keen on balancing healthy competition with entry of disruptive technologies to ensure sustainable telecoms industry growth and development in Nigeria.

The Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of NCC, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, stated this, represented by NCC’s Executive Commissioner, Technical Services, Ubale Maska.

He said NCC will work on necessary modalities to ensure that it balances the need for healthy competition vis-a-vis the entry of new technologies, in order to protect all industry stakeholders.

“As the regulator of a highly dynamic sector in Nigeria, the Commission is conscious of the need to ensure that our regulatory actions are anchored on national interest.

“We have listened to your presentation and we will review it vis-à-vis our regulatory direction of ensuring effective and a sustainable telecoms ecosystem where a licensee’s operational model does not dampen healthy competition among other licensees,” Maska told the SpaceX delegation.

Maska further stated that the Commission is interested in making necessary regulatory efforts to drive the coverage of rural, unserved and underserved areas of the country through the accomplishments of the lofty targets contained in the Nigerian National Broadband Plan (NNBP), 2020-2025.

He noted that the plan’s target of 70 per cent broadband penetration target, covering 90 per cent of the population by 2025 is also in line with government expectations in the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS), 2010-2030.
