  • Dozens of migrants found dead on Mediterranean Sea

NO fewer than 25 people are believed to have died or are missing, including a pregnant woman, when a group of migrant boats got stranded at sea and was rescued off the Spanish coast on Thursday.

Briefing reporters in Geneva on Friday, spokesperson for the UN High Commission Refugees (UNHCR), Elizabeth Throssell, said that colleagues in the field had reported that bodies had been found on two of the boats.

“You can imagine how traumatising that was for the people who were rescued,” Ms Throssell said.

According to reports, the migrants had sailed from North Africa.

On one of the six vessels found adrift in the Straits of Gibraltar, in the western Mediterranean Sea, 33 people had been rescued, but 12 had died and a further 12 were missing, UNHCR said.

On another of the boats, the UN refugee agency said 57 people had been on board, including one that had already died by the time of the rescue.

“There was a massive sea-swell that threw them into the water,” Ms Throssell said, adding that among the survivors was a mother and her two-year-old child who was evacuated by helicopter, after she was found to be suffering from hypothermia.

She added that many of the survivors were being held at detention centres at the Port of Almeria in Spain.

“Our implementing partner is there to provide the people with information and support and to help any potential protection and other needs and of course to promote access to the asylum process for those who may need it,” she said.

Delivering the latest overall statistics on the deadly Mediterranean migration route, UN migration agency (IOM) spokesperson, Joel Millman, said that as of December 19, 113,000 migrants had entered Europe by sea so far in 2018.

According to him, the figure is the lowest recorded in five years.

Recently, however, he said the death rate for migrants attempting to reach Spain, had tragically begun to tick upwards, with 769 fatalities registered on the western Mediterranean migration route.

“That’s only slightly more than half of all on the Central Mediterranean route from North Africa to Italy, but what’s remarkable is how rapidly that number has increased over the last three months,” he said.

Mr Millman said it was likely that there would be “more incidents like this” in the next 10 days.

  • Gerard Pique fined for driving with suspended license

Gerard Pique fined for driving with suspended license

A Spanish court on Monday slapped Barcelona centre-back Gerard Pique with a fine of 48,000 euros ($54,000) for driving without a valid licence.

The Barcelona defender appeared before a judge on Monday and was ordered to pay the fine for the incident that happened in August.

Pique’s license was not valid when he was stopped by police during a random check in Barcelona. It had been suspended because of an excessive number of traffic infractions.

The sentencing specifies that Pique has to pay 200 euros ($227) daily for eight months.

  • Spain: Football has been unfair to us – Luis Enrique

Spain coach Luis Enrique says football has been unfair to his side after Thursday’s defeat in Croatia left them in danger of failing to reach the UEFA Nations League finals.

The 2010 World Cup winners had to chase the game twice in the second half in a dramatic 2-3 loss.

Dani Ceballos canceled out Andrej Kramaric’s opener and captain Sergio Ramos leveled from the penalty kick spot after Tin Jedvaj had made it 2-1 to the hosts.

There were left with virtually no time to respond, though, when left back Jedvaj struck again in stoppage-time.

“We created a lot of chances, some of them where it looked impossible that the ball would not go in, we hit the crossbar, and football has been unfair to us,” Luis Enrique told a news conference.

“In their first goal we made a mistake, their second came from a set-piece and they were lucky at the end.

“In the second half we deserved a lot more, we certainly didn’t deserve defeat. But this is football and we need to accept it.”

Spain have experienced a slump since thumping Croatia 6-0 in September and beating England.

Their place in the finals of the new competition now hangs in the balance after losing 3-2 at home to England and defeat in Zagreb.

Spain still top Group 4 with six points after four games but to reach the final round they need England to draw with Croatia in the group finale on Sunday.

Luis Enrique appeared resigned to his side not making it through, turning his attention to the qualifying campaign for Euro 2020.

“I would love to qualify for the final four but our top objective is the European Championships,” he said.

“We knew we were in a group with two of the best teams in the world. But I’m not worried about my team. I can see areas we need to improve in. But I think today’s result is completely unfair.”

Croatia had taken one point from their previous two Nations League games after appearing to suffer a hangover from reaching this year’s FIFA World Cup final match.

But Jedvaj’s late winner now means victory at Wembley over England, who they beat 2-1 in the World Cup semi-finals, would put them in the final phase.

“I am sure we have it in us to beat England,” Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic said. “The best of this new-look team is yet to come.”

  • England must always take fight to opposition – Dier

England must always take fight to opposition – Dier

Eric Dier believes England should maintain their combative approach as they progress under Manager Gareth Southgate, after the side’s impressive victory, over Spain in the UEFA Nations League this week.
England stunned their hosts 3-2 in Seville on Monday after Dier had set the tone for a brilliant first-half performance from the visitors.
Dier had some feisty challenges on Sergio Busquets and Sergio Ramos in the opening 15 minutes.
Dier was shown a yellow card for his tackle on Spain captain Ramos but he said it was important to ensure Spain were knocked out of their rhythm early.
“Once we start the game, it’s every man for himself and we have to put our foot down, put a marker down,’’ Dier told British media.
“We have to be aggressive, be on the front foot and show that nothing is going to intimidate us.
“Ramos is a great example; he does everything so well but at the same time he puts his foot down and he’s not going to be bullied.
“We have to be the same way.’’
Southgate’s side are building a reputation as a possession-based outfit but Dier reckons the ability to win physical battles will be equally as important to their long-term prospects.
“It’s just a question of being smart at the right times,” Dier added.
“Obviously, it was frustrating Spain, frustrating the crowd. I think it’s just maturity, really, knowing when to win fouls, when to take your time,’’ Dier said.

  • Irregular migrants turn to Morocco – Spain route

Irregular migrants turn to Morocco – Spain route

Thousands of irregular migrants from Africa are now considering the Moroccan to Spain route in an attempt to reach Europe by land, says the Migrant Project.

The anti-irregular migration campaign group, in a press statement, said that due to the unrest and clamp down in Libya, several migrants are avoiding the Libyan route which is deemed too risky, dangerous and stressful, thereby using the borders in Morocco as the connecting point into Europe.

According to the group, over 82,000 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea between January and September 2018, with over 36,600 entering Spain, making it the leading destination for irregular migration into Europe this year.

“In July, more than 700 migrants from sub-Sahara Africa stormed the border fence of the Spanish enclave Ceuta in Morocco with dozens injured and several dead,” the group’s media officer, Tayo Elegbede said.

Elegbede further noted that the realities of irregular migration in Nigeria and Africa continues to generate concerns for stakeholders due to the inherent dangers of the journey which entraps, enslaves and renders many migrants stranded, unsafe and even dead.

“Our observation of irregular migration trends in Nigeria has revealed quite a number of realities. While the journeys are a really hard move to track, it is worrisome to note that over 1,700 people have died this year in an attempt to cross the Mediterranean sea. Similarly, thousands have their lives in attempts to use the Moroccan-Spain route into Europe, This is outside of the cases of forced labour, slave trade, human trafficking, organ harvesting and detention, and other inhuman experiences,” Elegbede said.

He, however, enjoined Nigerians to explore home-based or legal alternatives to irregular.

“Apparently, irregular migration could be really costly to individuals, families, communities, nations and the world at large. Hence, we advise people, particularly potential migrants, to know the risks and realities of irregular migration and count the cost before embarking on such journies.”

“Therefore, it is safe to explore alternatives to irregular migration such as legal and proper migration, foreign studies and scholarships, family reunification, home-grown opportunities for business development, entrepreneurship, job placement, and skills development.”

  • Morata, Koke back in Spain squad

Atletico Madrid midfielder, Koke, and Chelsea striker, Alvaro Morata, have been recalled to the Spain squad for this month’s internationals against Wales and England, though Diego Costa has been left out by coach Luis Enrique.
Costa, who withdrew from the squad last month for personal reasons, came off injured during Atletico’s 3-1 win over Club Bruges in the Champions League on Wednesday, though Atletico have yet to announce details of the injury.
Spain coach, Enrique, declined to say whether or not the striker had been in his plans before he was injured against Bruges.
“I don’t know why people are so interested in knowing this. He got injured and that is it,” Enrique told a news conference.
Spain play Wales in a Cardiff friendly next Thursday before hosting England in a UEFA Nations League tie at Real Betis’s Benito Villamarin Stadium the following Sunday.
Enrique’s team is top of the Nations League A Group 4 standings on six points after beating England 2-1 and hammering Croatia 6-0 last month.
“The friendly with Wales will allow us to try things out. The vital game is against England. There will be little room for experiments because we have to win,” Enrique said.
The coach has also handed a first call-up to Wolverhampton Wanderers defender, Jonny Castro, and the recalled Real Betis defender, Marc Bartra, and Borussia Dortmund forward, Paco Alcacer, having worked with the latter pair while at Barcelona.
Barca defender Jordi Alba, however, continues to be overlooked despite showing strong form for his club.
Real Madrid pair Isco and Dani Carvajal, along with Barca’s Sergi Roberto and Athletic Bilbao’s Inigo Martinez, were part of the last squad, but all miss out through injury.
The defenders are Cesar Azpilicueta, Raul Albiol, Nacho Fernandez, Sergio Ramos, Marc Bartra, Jonny Castro, Marcos Alonso and Jose Gaya.
The Midfielders are Sergio Busquets, Rodri, Koke, Saul Niguez, Thiago Alcantara and Dani Ceballos.
The Forwards, Marco Asensio, Iago Aspas, Alvaro Morata, Suso, Rodrigo Moreno and Paco Alcacer.

  • Spain beat France to reach FIFA Under-20 WWC final

A lone goal from Spaniard Patricia Guijarro was all Pedro Lopez ladies needed to defeat hosts France.

They thus secured a clash against Japan in the final match of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

Guijarro’s sixth goal of the tournament, in the 51st minute, was able to hand the team a first-ever chance at the finals of the World Cup.

This was however even as the team was reduced to 10-man on Monday.

Aitana Bonmati was booked for a second foul and was shown out in the 69th minute, becoming the only player to be sent off in the tournament.

The atmosphere at the Stade de la Rabine was obviously electrifying as both team struggled to show dominance but ended the first half in a stalemate.

FC Barcelona Ladies midfielder Guijarro, broke the deadlock minutes into the second half to give her team the lead as the French side struggled to utilise its chances.

France earned an opportunity to equalise via a penalty kick in the 76th minute but substitute Marie-Antoinette Katoto’s strike was saved by goalkeeper Catalina Coll.

In the end, it is Spain and Japan in the final on Friday, after the Asians defeated England 2-0 in the first semi-final match.

The third place match will also be played same day at the tournament in France.

Barcelona’s Pique confirms retirement from international football

Barcelona’s Spain defender Gerard Pique has confirmed his retirement from international football.

The 31-year-old centre-back made 102 appearances for his country between 2009 and 2018, scoring five times.

He was part of the Spain team that won their first World Cup in 2010, before adding the 2012 European Championship.

His appearances were often greeted with jeers and whistles by Spanish fans, partly because of his support for Catalonia’s independence referendum.

Catalonia, a region of 7.5 million people in north-eastern Spain, has its own language and culture and Barcelona is its capital.

Pique had declared his intention to quit international football after the 2018 World Cup following a qualifier against Albania in October 2016, when he said he was tired of criticism and wanted “to be left in peace”.

He remains a divisive figure within Spain, and has often been critical of Barca’s club rivals Real Madrid.

Pique did not immediately confirm his retirement following Spain’s exit from the World Cup, when they lost on penalties to hosts Russia in the last 16.

His expected decision comes despite former Barca boss Luis Enrique having since been appointed Spain’s manager.

“I spoke to Luis Enrique a few days ago. He called me and I told him the decision was taken a long time ago and that I had thought about it carefully,” Pique said on Saturday.

“It was a beautiful time with the national team in which I had the chance to win the World Cup and the European Championship. Now I want to focus on Barca,” he added.

“I have a few years left here and I’m going to enjoy them a lot.”

Barca, who won the Spanish double last season, play Sevilla in the Spanish Super Cup in Tangier, Morocco, on Sunday at 21:00 BST.
