Why Manchester City’s Rodri deserves to win 2024 Ballon d’Or – Spain coach, Luis de la Fuente

The coach of the Spanish senior national team, Luis de la Fuente, has backed midfielder Rodri to win the 2024 Ballon d’Or.

La Fuente is of the opinion that Rodri distinguished himself at the just concluded Euro 2024, saying he deserved the top individual award considering his heroics for both club and country.

He spoke after Spain defeated England 2-2 in the Euro 2024 final at the Olympiastadion in Berlin on Sunday night.

Nico Williams gave Spain the lead in the 47th minute before Cole Palmer equalized some minutes later.

Mikel Oyarzabal then broke English hearts with his 86th-minute winner.

In the final, Rodri had to be replaced at halftime by Martin Zubimendi.

However, the Manchester City star took home the Player of the Tournament award.

Speaking after the game, De la Fuente said (via Tribal Football):

“Also, Zubimendi replacing the best player in the world, please Rodri Ballon d’Or now.”

Rodri has now won the Euro 2024 trophy with Spain  as well as finishing first with Manchester City last season.

  • Dani Carvajal mocked Saka during Euros final

Dani Carvajal mocked Saka during Euros final

Spain defender Dani Carvajal gestured to Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka at one point in the Euro 2024 final.

The Real Madrid star was unhappy with Saka going down after a physical challenge between the two.

Carvajal made a “stop crying” gesture towards the speedy winger, who was kept quiet for much of the contest.

Carvajal did appear to have fouled Saka in the sequence of play prior to his gesture.

Fans may recall the similarities to a challenge three years ago by Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during the Euro 2020 final.

Saka and England were unable to avenge that loss, going down 2-1 to Spain on Sunday.

Euro 2024 final: Why we lost to Spain – Harry Kane reacts

Captain of the English national football team, Harry Kane has reacted after Spain thrashed the Three Lions to lift the Euro 2024 title.

Kane said after the final with teary eyes that England did really well to get back into the game but that the could not keep the ball.

“Losing in a final is as tough as it gets. We did really well to get back into the game but we didn’t quite keep the same intensity and pressure I guess.

“We couldn’t quite keep the ball and we got punished for it” said captain Kane.

Spain substitute Mikel Oyarzabal scored four minutes from time to give his side a deserved 2-1 Euro 2024 final victory over England on Sunday.

It was a record fourth European crown, as Gareth Southgate’s team lost in their second successive final.

Oyarzabal finished off a swift counter-attack for the winning goal as Spain were crowned champions, having won all seven games they played in the tournament.

“I have done my job,” said Oyarzabal, who came on for captain Alvaro Morata after 67 minutes.

“Just the fact of being … in the 26, you value it a lot. It happened to me but could have happened to anyone.”

After a cautious first half where Spain had 65% possession but England’s Phil Foden had the only shot on target.

It took two minutes after the restart for Spain to strike despite losing influential midfielder Rodri to injury at the break.

Teenager Lamine Yamal found space down the right and crossed for fellow winger Nico Williams to slot home as England fell behind for the fourth successive match.

Spain then enjoyed a purple patch with a series of sharp attacks as England’s previously watertight defence fell apart and Dani Olmo, Morata and Williams all had good chances.

Southgate reacted by sending on Ollie Watkins, the scoring substitute hero of the semi-final, for an ineffective Harry Kane after an hour.

Cole Palmer, England’s most creative player for the last month, joined Watkins 10 minutes later.

It paid off almost immediately when Jude Bellingham laid the ball back into Palmer’s path and the substitute curled home a precise low 20-metre shot in the 73rd minute.

The massed ranks of England fans, who vastly outnumbered their rivals, exploded and the whole feel of the night changed.

Spain weathered the storm and a lapse of concentration saw England undone as Marc Cucurella was left in space on the left.

Cucurella received the ball from Oyarzabal and drilled it across the box for the substitute to stretch out a toe and poke it home.

There was still time for more drama at the other end as Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon parried a Declan Rice header from a corner.

Dani Olmo also blocked Marc Guehi’s follow up on the line.

Spain survived to add a fourth title to those won in 1964, 2008 and 2012.

They also became only the third team in the last nine Euros to win the trophy without coming through a shootout at some point in the tournament following France (2000) and Greece (2004), nobody can deny they were worthy winners.

For England the “30 years of hurt” after their 1966 World Cup success, which was sung about at Euro 1996, will now run to at least double that number.

They also became the first team to lose successive Euro finals.

As the match seemed destined for extra time, Mikel Oyarzabal scored with less than five minutes remaining. Cucurella delivered the perfect pass, and Oyarzabal beat Pickford for the second time in the half.

Spain’s performance throughout the tournament was impressive, including a 2-1 victory over France in the semi-finals, where Lamine Yamal became the youngest scorer in Euros history. England, despite a tough journey, managed to defeat the Netherlands 2-1 in an inspired performance.

Spain won all seven of their matches in regulation time and became the only team to score in every game of Euro 2024.

Speaking about Yamal, Watkins, who currently plays for Aston Villa, said (as per Reshad Rahman):

“He’s an unbelievable talent; everyone has seen what he can do. A generational talent. It’s not often you are scoring against France in the semi-final of the Euros when you are 16. He’s got the world at his feet. He’s miles ahead of me when I was 16 or 17.”

  • Euro 2024 final: How we will play Spain – Southgate

Euro 2024 final: How we will play Spain – Southgate

Manager of England national football team, Gareth Southgate has given an inkling of how his side will play against Spain in the Euro 2024 final on Sunday.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports England’s last-gasp victory over the Netherlands in their semi-final on Wednesday set them up against Spain, who had earlier best France to qualify for the final.

Southgate, who noted The Three Lions showed character and resilience against the Netherlands, stressed they are now ready to take the final step and lift their first major trophy in almost 60 years.

Substitute Ollie Watkins scored in the 91st minute to send England through to their second successive European Championship final with a 2-1 win.

Their overall performance was an emphatic answer to the criticism heaped on his side for some earlier languid showings.

“We all want to be loved, right?” Southgate told a press conference.

“When you are doing something for your country and you are a proud Englishman, when all you read is criticism it is hard.

“To be able to celebrate a second final is very, very special. We have given people some amazing nights, some of the best nights in 50 years.”

Southgate, who took over in 2016, has now led them to at least the quarter-finals in the last four major tournaments, the only European side to achieve this feat.

They lost to Italy on penalties in the Euro 2020 final but now have the chance to go one better against Spain in Sunday’s showcase in Berlin.

“It shows the more modern England way but also the resilience and character of the group.

“Ollie Watkins has trained like that every day. He has trained for his moment no matter how frustrated.”

“They had each others’ back, they bonded so well and tonight it was an example of that.”

England needed penalties to overcome Switzerland in the last eight before the late winner on Wednesday.

Southgate said his team had learned from knockout matches since the 2018 World Cup in Russia where they lost in the semi-finals to Croatia.

“We are more calm going into the knockout games. In Russia we had not won a knockout game in 10 years,” Southgate said.

“To be able to take the team to the first final overseas I am immensely proud of that,” he said.

England won the 1966 World Cup on home soil while the Euro 2020 final was also held at Wembley.

They will now face the form team of the tournament Spain, who have won all their matches in Germany.

“We will have to get the ball off them first,” Southgate said of their next opponents.

“It is not as simple as us having the ball and making them run. We have to be exceptional with the ball and without it. They have been the best team.”

“We are starting to show a better version of ourselves,” he said, adding they had one less day than Spain, who beat France on Tuesday in their semi-final, to prepare.

“But we are in there with what we have shown to this point. We have as good a chance as they do.

“We have come here to win it. It is a huge task but we are still here and fighting.”

  • Euro 2024 exit: Why we lost to Spain – Deschamps

Euro 2024 exit: Why we lost to Spain – Deschamps

Inefficiency in front of goal cost France at the European Championship, team head coach Didier Deschamps said after Tuesday’s 1-2 loss to Spain saw them go out at the semi-finals stage.

France scored four goals in six matches at the tournament and Randal Kolo Muani’s early effort in Munich on Tuesday was the first they had scored from open play.

They benefitted from two own goals and a penalty kick.

Wayward shooting, notably from out-of-form team captain Kylian Mbappe, did not help their cause after they went 2-1 down and were searching for an equaliser.

“I am the one who has to take responsibility,” said Deschamps, after questions about the poor form of Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann, previously another key player for France.

“We didn’t have all the offensive weapons either, and we had to adapt for different reasons. We didn’t have the usual influence.

“The pair of them didn’t play as well as they usually do, or to 100 percent of their capacity. But they were coming off long seasons and it was difficult for them to find their efficiency,” Deschamps told a news conference.

“We came up against a very good Spanish team, who confirmed all the potential they had shown before.

“We could have done certain things better against an opponent, who had a lot of control of the game…  We fought until the end, but we had our limits too, for different reasons.

“We had complicated situations. We were playing a sixth game and so maybe we had a little less energy too.”

Deschamps explained that Mbappe’s decision to play without a mask had been cleared by the French medical team.

This was after the attacker ditched the protection he had used since returning to the side after breaking his nose in France’s opening game of the tournament against Austria.

Mbappe had previously said it had irritated him, hampering his vision and became difficult to wear with all the sweat during the game.

Euro 2024 progress to final: Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente reacts

Meanwhile, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has hailed his team’s quality and cohesion in coming from a goal down to beat France and reach the Euro 2024 final on Tuesday.

It was a feat he took no credit for and said was all about his players’ insatiable hunger for success.

De la Fuente said his team had versatility and outstanding individual qualities, which when put together created a special brand of football.

He added that the same brand of football would be on show in Sunday’s final, regardless of whether the opponent was England or Netherlands.

“Our idea of football is based on our self-assurance. This is what we want to play, we want to play to our strengths.

“I know that we are able to play football, we’ve seen it throughout the tournament.

“Individually they are fantastic but they offer the collective benefits of their individual qualities … they always work for the common good, for the collective effort.

“They are very generous in their efforts and work rate. This is just one more sign that this is an insatiable team, that they want to keep improving with the spirit of sacrifice,” he told reporters.

Spain went behind to an early goal from France’s Randal Kolo Muani before teenager Lamine Yamal levelled with a brilliant strike in the 21st minute.

Dani Olmo added a second just a few minutes after in a spectacular first half.

De la Fuente hit back at critics who had previously questioned some of his decisions and team selections, reminding them that he knew his players best after a long history with many of them.

“I want you to know that this may surprise you more than it surprises us, because we knew the possibilities we had …

“I know these footballers and I make my decisions based on how much I know them.

“It’s not out of a whim. You’ve been asking for this player or this other player, when you don’t know the history behind each and every one of them.

“We do know – me and the technical staff – and I know my players can give much more and they can improve and be even better,” he said.

De la Fuente had special praise for Yamal, whose goal he described as “a touch of genius. We all know who he is. We need to take care of him.

“I want him to work with the same humility, keep his feet on the ground in order to keep improving, learning with the same kind of attitude and that professionalism, that maturity that he shows on the pitch.

“He looks like a much more experienced player to be honest.

“But fundamentally I celebrate that he’s in our team, that he’s Spanish and that we count on him and I hope we can enjoy him for years to come.”

  • Euro 2024: Lamine Yamal reacts after ‘wonder goal’ against France

Euro 2024: Lamine Yamal reacts after ‘wonder goal’ against France

Spain teenager Lamine Yamal on Tuesday sought to play down excitement over his wonder goal against France.

Yamal, however, said reaching the European Championship final was a dream come true for him – and his mother too.

Sixteen-year-old Yamal eclipsed Brazilian great Pele to become the youngest player to score in a World Cup or Euros with a stunning 21st-minute strike.

The ball had sailed into the top corner, helping Spain come from a goal down to beat France 2-1.

He was asked how he felt about scoring what could be the goal of Euro 2024.

“I’m really happy for the victory and for getting to the final.

“I don’t know if it’s the best goal of the tournament but it’s the most special for me because getting to a final with the national team in the Euros is something super special for me,” he told reporters.

With his creativity, pace and panache, Yamal has glittered as part of a Spain side who have won all their six matches at Euro 2024. They are now within reach of a record-breaking fourth Euros title.

His coach Luis de la Fuente described Yamal’s goal as “a touch of genius.”

Yamal was asked if he was aware he had become an icon of the tournament and said it did not matter what people thought of his individual contribution.

“I try not to look at that too much. I don’t know if I’m the icon or not. That doesn’t really help anything on the pitch.

“I need to help my team, that’s what I try to do and that’s what I tried to do today.

“I was really happy after the final whistle. It’s a dream come true, reaching a final with the senior national team,” he said.

He added: “Even my mum said it was her dream too. So, I’m really happy that was my goal against France, my first goal against France, in a semi-final.”

Yamal’s goal and defeat of France was the perfect reply to an earlier remark by French midfielder Adrien Rabiot.

Rabiot had reportedly said the impressive Yamal would have to do much more against Les Bleus if he wanted to play in the final.

Yamal during the match ran to a television camera yelling “speak now, speak now.”

He was asked who he was talking to, but declined to say.

“The person I’m talking about, this person will know who this person is,” he said.

Euro 2024: Spain zoom into final, defeat France 2-1

The La Roja of Spain on Tuesday night zoomed into the final of the ongoing Euro 2024 tournament after defeating France 2-1 at the Munich Arena in Germany.

The Les Blues of France took the lead inside
8th minute through Randal Kolo Muani but Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo reacted quickly with two goals in the first half to turn the table around for Spain

16-year -old  Yamal scored a wondergoal to become the youngest scorer in men’s European Championship history.

The youngster fired a stunning strike into the top cover from outside the penalty area to equalise after Randal Kolo Muani’s early opener in the semi-final in Munich.

Teammate, Olmo then struck moments later to give Spain the lead, as his goal-bound shot deflected in off France defender Jules Kounde to go past Maignan in goal.

A tight affair in the second half saw the two teams manage few shots on target each.

All efforts to score on both ends proved abortive in the second 45 minutes of the thrilling encounter.

The result meant Spain will face either of England or Netherlands who play in the second semi -final on Wednesday.

The Euro 2024 final will be played in Munich on Sunday, July 14th.
